1920s A decade of change in
the United States
-The time period when the 18th Amendment was
enforced
-The ban of alcohol.
Why? The Temperance Movement stressed the evils of alcohol during the Progressive Era. Carry Nation and Francis Willard were two reformers who pushed for the ban of alcohol.

The Effects….The law was difficult
to enforce!
Bootleggers broke the law and smuggled alcohol for a profit. This lead to an increase in crime and gang activity.

Some women, especially in cities, cut their hair and wore makeup and shorter skirts! They danced the Charleston and were carefree.
