T^HE A. H. FINDLAY Golf Clubs are made

by expert workmen from the very best ma-

terial, and after models furnished by Mr. Findlay,

who personally examines every club. The

Drivers and Brassies are made socket style, which

brings the spring close to the head, thereby in-

creasing the driving distance.

q^HE Iron clubs—Cleek, Mid-Iron, Mashie,

Putter, Driving Iron and Lofter are splendidly

balanced, while a Niblick is so shaped that a ball

can be played out of any difficulty. A golfer

who plays with Findlay Clubs may feel certain

that he has the best.

words on the clubs most essential, and trust it will save you some postage stamps.

Wright & Ditson)

^^^ t^* t^^

A SHORT TALK ON GOLF CLUBSBY A. H. FINDLAY

DRIVERThe Driver is the most powerful of golf clubs, with a fine springy shaft and straight or bulged

face. With it the ball can be driven a greater distance than with any other club. Used at every tee

for the first stroke (with the exception of a hole less than 163 yards or thereabout), and used through

the fair green, also when the ball should, perchance, find a nice lie.

B R A S S I E

The Brassie comes next for long distance, the head of which is somewhat smaller than the driver.

The face is spooned or sloped back from the front of sole or horn to the top of the head, which

gives the ball "loft" in the air. The sole is shod with brass to protect the head, as many shots are

played in rough, hard places, which would play havoc with one's driver.

C L E E K

The Cleek is supposed to be the driver of the iron family, and is one of the most essential of

clubs for all players, has less loft than other irons, and the longest shaft, though not so long as the

Driver. When playing golf with a single club the Cleek should be used, as one can drive, approach

and put with rather a good degree of accuracy.

DRIVING IRONThe Driving Iron is deeper in blade, and some are made more upright than is the Cleek. A

handy club to use from the tee to holes less than a full drive. Is much similar to that of a Cleek.

MID IRONDeeper in blade than cither of above irons and has more loft, a very useful club to use when the

ball lies badly, and for short approaches and running up approaches over level land, has no equal.

No kit is complete without a Mid Iron; it drives less far than the Cleek, as it pitches the ball much

higher into the air.

22

Page 27: (1901) Catalogue of Fine Athletic Goods

ify^Si^!3^rtL^

A SHORT TALK ON GOLF CLUBSBY A. H. FINDLAY

M A S H I E

Is shorter in the blade than the iron and has more loft. It is mostly used for approaches and for

playing the ball out of ruts and rough places in general. All good golfers use it almost exclusively

for all manner of approaches. Few golfers use it for full approaches. The half and strokes less than

the half, should be practiced with the Mashie.

LO FTE RAs the name implies, is used for pitching over bunkers and out of bad lies and short approaches,

it has a much larger head than the Mashie and is really a harder club to handle, and one can play more

accurately with a Mashie. The Lofter is gradually vanishing, and will soon be a thing of the past.

DRIVING MASHIEUsed as a Cleek or Driving Iron. It has a short, upright, deep blade, and drives the same distance

as the Cleek or Driving Iron. Owing to the shortness of the blade, it enables a player to pick the ball

out of a cuppy or bad lie better than irons with a longer blade. Is used mostly for full shots.

NIBLICKIs used exclusively for bunkers and hazards. The head is not much longer than the ball. Good

Niblicks are concaved and will pitch a ball almost straight up. It generally takes lots of dirt, etc., as

mostly all Niblick shots are supposed to be hit low down beneath the ball. The Niblick stands morerough usage than all the other clubs combined.

PUTTERIs the shortest in length of all, and is used for putting or playing short strokes on the putting

green. There are all manner of putters; in the straight putter the head and shaft lie almost at right

angles to each other, but this style is now almost obsolete, the crooked or "Goosenecked " Putter

and Putting Cleeks being most used, they having many advantages over the ordinary putter.

Wooden putters are seen now and then, but they are of use only on large keen putting greens.

I would not advise anyone to use a wooden putter.

OTHER CLUBSLong Spoon, Mid Spoon. Short Spoon. Baffy, Brassy Niblicks, Driving Putters, are superseded

by the Brassy in the wood line.

There are other freak iron clubs made, too numerous to mention, and too hard to define.

KERNS^ PATENT WAIST REDUCING MACHINEKerns' Waist Reducer is a machine adapted for home or gymnasium

use and can be placed against the wall or any upright support, requiring

only 10 inches of wall space in width. The resistance, or weights, can

be adjusted so that it may be used by a child or a grown person.

The machine is simple in construction and requires no great prepa-

ration to use it. A small, clock-faced dial registers the number of feet

of rope pulled and assists the operator in determining how much workhe should do. The operator starts his work in a normal position. All

movements consist of a downward pull of the rope and are varied bytaking the different positions shown in the engravings. The work can bemade light or heavy, to suit the will of the operator, all movements havinga direct action on the stomach and vital parts of the body.

Position No. 1 PosiTio:. Nc. 1

?

It is well known to all that

a common sailor who per-

forms his duties on board ship

has a small waist and soundstomach. These are gradually

developed from the constant

reaching and pulling on ropes

and the change of position he

is obliged to assume whileperforming his duties. Thissame effect is attained byusing Kerns' Waist Reducer. These machines are beingrecommended bv leadingNew York physicians andphysical directors, who are

making a study of a properexercise in connection withtheir duties.

Position No. i.

Face to the machine, right arm ex-

tended full reach, grasping the rope,

movement downward, followed byleft arm, giving the operator a reg-

ular overhand sailor puil. Thismovement is decidedly good in re-

ducing the waist and hardening thestomach.

Position No. 2.

Face to machine, bothhands on rope, a forwardbend from hip and down-ward pull with the arms. This also reduces the waistand hardens the stomach.

Position No. 3.

Face to machine, reversehands so as to have palmsface the machine, down-ward pull and overhand, giving a beautiful wristmovement.

The above are only a few of the movements

Kerns' Waist Reducer is also

a good all-round exerciser;

every muscle of the body canbe worked to good advantage. Most of the exercisers now in

use have a tendency to makethe operator muscle-bound,while the Kerns' Waist Re-ducer stretches the musclesand makes them soft andpliable. There is no spring or

rubber to assist operator whileregaining the normal position,

for the natural vitality of the

body should be enough, as in

ordinary movements of life.

The effect of this is that it

leaves the body strong andactive in all parts.

Positions Nos. 4 and 5.

Back to machine, standing at a

proper distance from the machine, so

that with the arm extended over

head and so that rope may be pulled

on a direct line ; alternate by using

right and left arm. Have weightadjusted on machine so as to have a

fair pull without making muscles of

body lame. This move-ment brings in most of the

shoulder, neck and backmuscles, besides expand-ing the chest

Position No. 6.

arms behind back, grasp-

ing rope, with a down-ward pull hand over hand. This is a hip and waist

movement,

you can get on this machine.

QYMNA51UM Q00D5 FOR HOME USETHE LAFLIN

FRICTION ROWING MACHINECHE smallest, simplest and most practical Rowing Machine yet intro-

duced. The means used to produce a resistance is a simple friction

clutch, which takes instant hold at the commencement of the stroke

and holds the pressure till its completion, but instantly releasing it,

precisely as in a boat. It is quickly taken apart without loosening any

bolts or screws, and can be set away in a closet or put under the bed,

occupying but a small space—a most valuable feature for home u.^e.

Each machine is adjustable to any amount of friction, and has an indi-

cator so graduated that one revolution is equivalent to 100 strokes, or

one-third of a mile, based on Hanlan's time of thirty-two strokes per

minute. Handsomely built from ash and maple, iron work japanned,

and every machine guaranteed.

Kerns' Patent Single Scull and Individual Sweep Rowing Machine(PATENTED^

The ideal boat for gymnasium, home and training purposes, and is used by the leading athletic clubs, colleges

and prominent oarsmen of the world. It is pronounced by experienced oarsmen to be the most perfect machine

ever produced. The cuts herewith presented will give a general idea of the form in which the machines are built.

They are fiited with the Kerns' Patent Roller Seat and Shoes, the shoes having a three-inch adjustment, to suit r

tall or short person. By a thumb-nut a belt can be tightened to any desired degree, and more or less friction can

be thrown into the running parts, so that the resistance during the stroke is the same as that which exists when

forcing a shell-boat through the water. As the machines are intended for general use, the pull can be regulated at

will by turning one screw so that the weaker sex can use the machine with very little resistance; while on the

other hand, the resistance can be so mcreased that the strongest athlete can have the desired resistance.

Single Scull

Rowing Machine

The oars are pivoted in such a way that the operator can handle andturn them the same as he would during the return and feathering

motion. The machines are built for single scull rowing, pair oared, four, six or eight. The machines for crewrowing are rigged so as to place the men in the same position as they would be in a boat. Every machineis warranted.
