Aims of the course

• Learn about the history of the 19th century England against the background of literature and culture

• Develop the skills of reading 19th century English literature and speaking about it

• Develop the skills of listening and writing in English

Prerequisites

• Interest in literature, history and culture• Willingness to develop this interest• English language skills (A2 or B1)

• William Blake• Lake Poets• Jane Austen• Charles Dickens• Bronte Sisters• Robert Louis Stevenson• Oscar Wilde• Thomas Hardy

Methodology

• The course will be a combination of lecture and discussion

• Discussions will be based on the extracts from the works of 19th century writers (previous slide) studied at home

• We will also be using extracts from audio-books and watching scenes from the films based on the 19th century books
