5 READING Silicon Valley’s star

Who was Steve Jobs and why do some call him the “father of the digital revolution”? Read and find out.

The next time you find yourself enjoying the well-designed look andfeel of your computer, thank Steve Jobs. The next time you’re clicking on colourful icons that brighten and simplify your computer desktop, thank Steve Jobs. The next time you’re listening to musicon your iPod or

surfing the internet on your iPhone, thank Steve Jobs. Or the next time you’re getting things done on a book-sized tablet at work, in a plane, or on your sofa, thank Steve Jobs.

Personal computers and the internet have become such a part of our daily lives that we can’t imagine life without them. Steve Jobs perhaps did more to shape this revolution in work, communication and entertainment than any other person.

He was born in San Francisco in 1955 and grew upin the area we know today as Silicon Valley. WhenJobs was in high school, he and his friend Steve Wozniak shared an interest in electronics. Wozniakhad a natural talent for engineering, and Jobs had some clever ideas, a feeling for design, and was good at selling things. Together Jobs and Wozniak started Apple Computer Company in 1976. At the time, not many people had personal computers, mostly because they were very technical. The two friends wanted to make people-friendly computers that were easy to use. After just two years the first Apple computers became a huge success.

Jobs believed strongly that computers could enrich people’s lives. His goal was to make products that people didn’t know they wanted or needed, but when they had them, they wouldn’t want to be

without them. He knew that their design had to be functional but also simple, attractive and different.

A TV ad for Apple in 1997 showed greats like Einstein, Gandhi and Picasso. A voice said: “Here’s to the crazy ones. The rebels. The troublemakers. The ones who see things differently. While some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world … are the ones who do.”

Steve Jobs was clearly one of those people. This showed in the beautifully designed products that his company made. Every new Apple product became an event. Each new Apple computer has introduced features that no other computer has. The iPod and the iTunes Store have transformed the music industry. The iPhone has changed the way people think about and use mobile phones. And the iPad has shown its users new ways to work and to play.

Steve Jobs was not an easy boss to work for. His people worked very hard, and he was often impatient and angry when people told him that something wasn’t possible. His critics thought he was cold and arrogant, but most people who knew him understood that he pushed people – including himself – because he wanted extraordinary results. And he usually got them.

Steve Jobs died in 2012 after a long fight with cancer. He was 57.
