19 June 2017 From the Principal’s Desk Hi Everyone, What a huge 3 weeks it has been at Lakelands Primary School. We have had an amazing Year 6 Camp, Book Fair, Mandurah History incursion, Ice Castle Construction day, WA Primary Pricipals’ Association Conference, Winter Carnival events and the ECE Garden Busy Bee supported by Coles. It is so satisfying seeing the P&C, local businesses and the community working together to help make our School a quality one. I am also excitied to know that our School Choir will be performing at the official opening of the Lakelands Shopping Centre in July, which is a great opportunity to showcase the talent in the School. With holidays less than two weeks away I am sure students and staff will be looking forward to the break, however, there are some exciting excurions and of course the ‘Good Standing Day’ to celebrate a hard working term. With LakeFest also on the horizon, Lakelands is the place to be this year. I trust your holiday break will be a special time with the family. Don’t forget you can always stay up to date with all the latest information and events via our website (soon to be updated) [email protected] , MessageU and the P&C Facebook site https://www.facebook.com/groups/1477892799091 841/. Operation: Social Safety In response to recent incidences of cyber-bullying and inappropriate usage outside the school and feedback from parents, LPS is working with the School Board, P&C, local businesses, Lakelands Heart Beat and Mandurah Shire to organise a Social Safety day. Thank you to parents who have provided suggestions and ideas since the last newsletter. We are looking to allocating a day (4 September proposed) where students, parents and community members are involved in promoting positive social behaviour, understanding social media and adopting responses to negative social behaviour. This will link strongly with our values and foster a community approach to safety and care in our community. If you have any suggestions or ideas that could help this campaign please email [email protected] and we would love to hear from you. ECE & Coles Busy Bee Thank you to Megan, the P&C, Rob (Gardener), Tabitha, Alex and Coles for the successful installation of the ECE Nature Garden. As mentioned, it is a huge benefit to us enabling students to learn with hands-on and engaging resources promoting healthy eating and lifestyle. Feel free to come and have a look at the magnificent garden when you have a chance. Winter Sport Congratulations to our Lakelands Legends Winter Sports squads with excellent results in soccer, netball, volleyball and football. More importantly, our students have played in good spirit displaying the Lakelands Legend values we are so proud of. The Winter Carnival Program culminates this Friday 23 June with a whole day Lightning carnival in various central Mandurah

Year 6 Camp Point Peron I had the opportunity to join the Year 6 Point Peron Camp for one night and I must say it was one of the major highlights in 2017 for me so far. It was so pleasing to see senior students working together on challenges, showing courage with trying new skills and leading tasks with responsibility. Above all there were smiling faces everywhere with some old fashion fun- that didn’t involve a screen. I commend Michelle Neve, Eve Clucas, Graham Edge and Cameron Hendy for a well organised camp, which I am sure, will be the highlight fixture for the senior students in years to come at Lakelands Primary School.

19 June 2017 Artist in Residents

You may have noticed the colourful new Art project commencing near the Senior Nature Play area coordinated by Kim Fitzpatrick. Students are doing a terrific job depicting the local land features with Aboriginal artistic techniques.

Toddler Time Every Thursday is ‘Toddler Time’ where Nicole Ellis reads popular books and parents are encouraged to join in. It was brilliant to hear both Mums and Dads have joined in the fun so far, which is a great way to engage young children’s interest in learning. Start time is 8:50am every Thursday in the school library.

Ripper Writers, Readers & Maths Champs The ‘Ripper Writers’ and ‘Number Champs’ continue in this issue and it is brilliant to see parents encouraging reading, writing and number skills at home. Here are some of our Lakelands Legends:

Numero Number Champs Mason & Caitlin from TB 5.8

Ripper Writers from TB 3.1 Scott, Jarvis, Isabella, Jada & Tiah

Ripper Writers Aryanna, Fynn, Ella, Jada, Bryce, Kayden,

Tyler (Abbey absent) from TB 1.5

School Health Newsletter “Flu” immunisations in Children Below the age of 5, it is recommended that all children have the immunisation. In countries and areas where this is given the rate of hospitalisation for young children with pneumonia is significantly decreased. Over the age of 5 children who are at increased risk from the flu are provided with a free vaccine from the government. These children include those on preventative treatments for asthma, or those with heart or kidney disease. Other reasons include long term aspirin use for something like juvenile arthritis, and of course illness such as diabetes. Immunisation can be had by any child where the parents would like to limit the child’s time away from school or decrease the chance of passing the flu onto other vulnerable people in their house. These immunisations are not covered by the government. The current risk of significant reactions to the influenza needles is very low but mild reactions occur in 1-10% and last 1-2 days. It is a dead virus and cannot give people the flu. It does not protect against colds and normal colds can last 1-2 weeks. The flu is much more serious and can leave people feeling below par for several months. Your general practitioner will be offering this vaccine as do many pharmacies.
