NEWS IN BRIEF• The Nelson Provincial Museum’s exhibition has come to a close with 15,305 people visiting it. In the last four weeks 587 adults flocked to the exhi-bition with many bringing children that were not counted. Museum chief Peter Millward earlier said he was “delighted” with the numbers.

• A competition seeking fresh ideas from the city’s young people for the design of a youth fo-cussed park at Tahunanui Reserve kicked off last week. The Nelson City Council and the Nelson Youth Council are launching the competition in a bid to ensure as many young people as possi-ble get the opportunity to see their ideas trans-formed into reality. The Tahunanui Youth Park replaces the skateboard half pipe, removed last year because of the increasing maintenance cost and limited use. Families and the wider commu-nity will also be encouraged to comment on the entries, which will be posted to the Council web-site and Facebook. They will then be assessed by the Youth Council, after the competition closes on 13 May. Contestants can also download en-try forms at www.nelsoncitycouncil.co.nz (search phrase = tahunanui youth park).

Nelson a safe place to be. We want to be good hosts and the whole community needs to buy into that,” he says. The tragic loss of life in Stoke “ticked all the boxes for all the wrong reasons” says Jenni. “We’ve got young men, a disqualified driver, alcohol and a high performance car. They were acting the fool in a sub-urban area just metres from a primary

school. We have to get these young people to realise they can’t play around in cars on public streets. They’re not bulletproof.“Right now this young man is facing a manslaughter charge. We’re certainly not going to sit on our hands and let this sort of reckless disregard for the law and pub-lic safety result in a light slap with a damp tea towel. This is a tragic waste of a life.”A male passenger of the other vehicle suf-fered head injuries and a badly broken leg and is to undergo surgery.

Wakefield Quay development nearing endThe Wakefield Quay Development project is almost finished after more than a dec-ade transforming what was once consid-ered an eyesore. Work is now underway on a timber deck-ing promenade to give public access along the shoreline from the Sunderland Pier to the Nelson Yacht Club ramp.NCC principal advisor reserves and com-munity facilities, Andrew Petheram says the project has made a huge difference to the precinct. He says the public prom-

enade outside the Nelson Yacht Club rig-ging area will have places for people to sit, relax and just enjoy the Haven. The current stage of the project involves minor land reclamation, the building of a sea wall from the Sunderland Pier to-wards the Yacht Club boat ramp, a public walkway, seating and access to the sea. The final stage, planned for next year, is a new pier to extend out to sea at right angles to Stoney Beach, near the Sealord Search and Rescue Centre.

The front page race is onWho do you think should win it?

Out of more than 100 entries, three lucky people have been randomly selected to tell us what to put on our front page. And you get to decide who wins. Two weeks ago we launched a competition to win control of our front page, with readers able to select what story they want us to report on and photograph. The competition sparked a massive response with close to 100 people writing “I want your front page” on our Facebook wall and dozens of phone calls to our office. Now it’s time to pick a winner and in the spirit of the competition, we are handing the decision over to you.

We have randomly selected three names out of the entries and asked them to briefly tell us what story they would like to see on the front page (be-low). To vote for what you would like to read, go to our Facebook page, find the entry you like and “like” it. The entry with the most “likes” wins the front page of Nelson’s only locally owned and op-erated newspaper. If you really want to vote but aren’t on Facebook, simply email [email protected] and tell us what your favourite is, we will add your vote.Voting closes April 26 with the front page to ap-pear on our May 3 issue.

Finalist number 1 Finalist number 2 Finalist number 3

Kaz HalkettKaz entered to give the show SOS - Sync or Swim, some publicity. Thirty parents and teachers of Nayland Primary School make up the group that perform lip syncing dancing shows “with lots of humour and a bit of booze”. It is a very unique fundraiser for the school and the group performs twice this year with the first show on August 27. The story is quite facinating.

To vote for Kaz go online to Fa-cebook and “like” the post with her name, or email [email protected].

Sharon TarapipipiSharon entered on behalf of Tasman Rugby League. She says she wants to use the front page to talk about the sport in the region and its most recent resurgance. Sharon says rugby league is a sport on the rise in Nelson and Tasman and the work that has gone on behind the scenes to get it onto the field last week-end would be a fantastic story for Nelson Weekly.

To vote for Sharon go online to Facebook and “like” the post with her name, or email [email protected].

Jacqui IrwinA Nelson man was left to pon-der life where doing the simple tasks with his hands was almost impossible. He has rheuma-tioid arthritis. But Jacqui wants us to tell the story of his battle to overcome it and even invent devices that improve his qual-ity of life and that of thousands of people around the world. Jacqui says patents have been filed for some of the inventions and he is an inspiration.

Off the back of a very successful start to the year for the i45 in New Zealand, its latest accolade, the stunning Hyundai i45 has been named Interna-tional Car of the Year. In a grueling American review, the family-fa-vourite midsize sedan has been singled out by a dozen of the world’s top motoring writers as the very best at fitting the lifestyle of its owner. “This is proof of what many Kiwi owners already know,” commented the Chief Operating Officer of Hyundai New Zealand, Tom Ruddenklau. “It’s an enormous accolade and an extremely dif-ficult award to win. The ICOTY Awards honour vehicles based on lifestyle compatibility and how well automakers achieve that goal. Many of the world’s leading brands would give anything to have a model honoured by the ICOTY jury,” said Mr Ruddenklau. The ICOTY Jury consists of 12 reputable writers and editors who represent respected publications such as Kelley Blue Book, Consumer Guide Au-tomotive, Yahoo! Autos, Auto Week, MSN Autos,

and Cars.com and more. Voting ballots are then sent to JD Power and As-sociates for final tabulation to ensure accuracy and credibility. Launched in 1997, the ICOTY Awards became the first automotive awards show to honour new vehicles based on the emotional connection be-tween car and consumer. “Month by month, all around the world, the accolades have continued to roll in since we launched the i45 last year,” Mr Ruddenklau said. “The awards and recognitions are simply too nu-merous to list. The i45 is setting the standard for even more advanced Hyundai vehicles in future, and New Zealand drivers are sharing the joy of this premium ownership experience right now.” The i45 has set a new industry standard for mid-size sedans, with a unique fuel-efficient four-cyl-inder engine delivering outstanding fuel econo-my, emotional design, high-tech and luxurious convenience features and a 5-star ANCAP safety rating across the entire range in New Zealand.

Spirit of NZ takes locals for a spinSEA SPIRIT: Laura Bowater, 12, and Ashley Venables, 12, from Nelson College for Girls Prep on the Spirit of New Zealand ship last Wednesday. Photo: Teresa Hattan.

Spending an afternoon on the Spirit of New Zealand was not something a group of local teenagers were going to pass up.Last Wednesday the ship was in Nelson for a public sailing and a school sailing thanks to spon-sor Hyundai. On Wednesday afternoon groups of high school children went from land to sea for three

hours and had the opportunity to see what being on a 10 day voyage would be like. Many had the chance to hoist the sails and some were even permitted to be at the helm of the widely recognised ship. However, those that were not able to experience the Spirit of New Zealand have not missed out completely; the ship will be

open to the public on April 25 on its return from a three day adult voyage around the Marl-borough Sounds. The tour, run in conjunction with Plunket, Water Safety New Zealand and the ASB Aquatic Centre, is a water safety event and will be run from 4.30pm to 6pm. For more information phone 539-5204.

Traffic plan to be tested for CrusadersRugby World Cup planners have been blessed with another Super 15 rugby game to further test their strategies ahead of the cup and this week-end the focus will be on traffic.Nelson City Council and Tasman Rugby Union will be running a larger Traffic Management Plan at the Super Rugby match on Saturday 23 April to improve safety for pedestrians and spectators.Trafalgar St will be closed to traffic from 5pm to 10pm between Grove St and Wainui St, Hatha-

way Terrace will be closed all day, from 6.30am until 10pm and cars parked on Trafalgar St must be removed by 5pm on Saturday or they will be towed away at the owner’s expense.Parking is also being opened up on the grass at Rutherford Park because parking at the Trafalgar Centre will be used by people going to the Danc-eSport Champs. Susan Coleman of NCC says the game is the perfect opportunity to further per-fect plans for the cup.

Rescue helicopter opens hangar to public

COME WITH US: Nelson Search and Rescuers Reuben McCormack, Tim Douglas-Clifford and Dave Colville on the Sum-mit Rescue Helicopter. The rescue helicopter service is opening its doors to the public during its annual appeal month in May. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

They go on more than 300 missions a year, and now it’s your chance to see them in ac-tion. Summit Rescue Helicopter is opening the doors of its hangar to the public at its fourth annual base open day.The open day on May 1 will mark the 20th an-niversary of the Nelson/Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust and will feature all emergen-cies services partnered with the Summit Res-cue Helicopter. Fire engines, surf lifesaving boats and an ambulance will all be on display alongside the chopper. The fire service will have a kitchen fire display.Marketing and communications manager Paula Muddle says the open day is a rare chance for locals to get a first hand look inside the rescue helicopter. “We don’t have the luxury of turning the ma-chine on and taking it in to town. A helicop-ter is very expensive to run, so it’s a chance for everyone to come along,” she says.At 12noon and 2pm there will be live winch displays, bouncy castle, throughout the day $50 helicopter rides will be taking passengers around Nelson and kids are encouraged to dress up as their favourite emergency hero. The top four will receive a free helicopter ride. The rescue helicopter can fly to Blenheim with-in 15 minutes and has been an increasingly vi-tal service since it first operated 40 missions in 1991, its first year. Just this year a British tourist was saved in the Kahurangi National Park thanks to the Sum-mit rescue helicopter. The Summit Rescue Helicopter Base is at McLaren Drive, Nelson Airport, next to the Aero Club. The fun starts at 11am at the end of the school holidays.

A superyacht CV-9 departed after a successful visit to Nelson, a log ship, and the Spirit of New Zealand made several short trips from the coastal berth. The Port was proud to be able to assist the Spirit of NZ with an appropriate berth for ease of public access.• I advise the Northern Cardinal marker has had its top section removed for repairs and a temporary light and fix-ture is in its place. The shortened beacon can be difficult to see during high tide so please be careful in that vicinity and keep a good look out.• The minimum size of vessels that are required to carry a pilot has been amended to 40m or more however if it is

likely to be your first visit to the port you are recommended to enlist the assistance of a pilot and glean the local informa-tion they have.• There was not a lot of small boat activity last week and those that misbehaved were soon spoken to by our staff. Many thanks to many others for their support of the work we try to do. • Recent rains have brought a lot of debris into the port again so please ensure a good lookout when out there.• Maritime Collision regulations Rule 22.5: “Every vessel must at all times maintain a proper look-out by sight and hearing as well as by all available means appropriate in the prevailing circumstances and conditions, so as to make full appraisal of the situation and risk of collision.”

Heritage Week splashes into action at RiversideInternational Heritage Day was all about water and scores of Nelsonia-ns came to celebrate by taking a dip at Riverside Pool yesterday.Heritage Day was on Monday but the festivities will go all week in Nelson with activities being held all over the city. But it was all about Riverside on Monday. Mayor Aldo Miccio re-opened the pools with a plaque telling the history of the pools outside and swimming was free for those who dressed from the era of when the pools first opened

in 1928. Manager Dave McKenzie says he was happy to see so many people come down and take advan-tage of the free swimming.“It’s been good fun and some peo-ple really got into the spirit of it and came in old-school togs that looked great. I’ve been really happy with how it has all gone.”While the plaque is permanent, the photo display will only remain at the pool for the rest of the week says Dave. “Anyone wanting to check it out should pop down.”

When New Zealand’s branding guru Brian Richards spoke at Nelsons Arts Festival he challenged local businesses to fuse lo-cal artistic talents to produce stunning images, logos and pack-aging to represent this paradise.Nelson Cycle Trails Trust executive officer Fiona Newey was listening and since has launched a brand and logo competition for the trustThe Nelson Cycle Trails Trust has funding to proceed with two trails: joint initiatives of the Nelson City Council, the Tasman District Council, the Nelson Cycle Trails Trust and The New Zealand Cycle Trail project. Now the trust is reaching to the community for ideas for a re-gional cycle brand name and logo. A total prize pool of $1000 is up for grabs, with the competition closing on May 1. Lloyd Harwood of Arts Council Nelson, Darryl Wilson of Wilsons Abel Tasman and Jane Reed of SeeReed Visual Communica-tions will judge the competition. For more information phone Fiona on 539-0266.

Hundreds of people lined up to be the first to use the brand new train at Modellers Pond on Sunday. The $35,000 miniature Kiwi Rail train was built by Dave Gillies of Auckland-based company Ikon Engi-neering and can haul up to eight passenger cars with 30 adults at one time. The train was funded by the $1 a ride trips at Modellers Pond. Older model trains can only take around ten to 15 passengers, so the new addition will handle a growing demand at the railway. The train has a 18 horsepower V-twin engine and has hydraulic drive to all eight wheels and a lot of the money used in the purchase came from the hosting of the model engineering convention in 2010.“The 2010 convention was a massive money spinner for the club. It enabled us to place the order,” says Nel-son Society of Modellers president John Campbell.John says the replica of the Kiwi Rail train was cho-sen because local people can relate to it. “If they go to

Blenheim they’ll see that go past them at the front gate on Blenheim’s main road. They’ll come here and go ‘it’s the same one’.” The train is the first brand new model that has been built specifically for the club. The train can reach a top speed of 11 kph and took six months of full time labour to be completed. The train was brought down from Auckland in Dave’s van and the train had to be made to fit the Toyota Hi-ace, so it’s not officially to scale. The extension and second railway track enables passen-gers to make more than one trip and John says that it has made a “big difference” to the Tahunanui based railway. “The people who were here over the January conven-tion last year say it’s among the best tracks in New Zealand. A lot of them are quite long but they’re just around buildings.”Miniature train rides over Easter are from 10am on Saturday and Sunday and from 1pm on ANZAC Day.Saturday will feature a night run from 6:30pm.

A free guided walk around historic Brougham St, starting at Melrose House will be just one of the highlights of Her-itage Week in Nelson.Debbie Daniel-Smith, of Nelson City Council, will lead the Dress Circle Walk where she encourages people to dress up and get in the spirit before embark-ing on a leisurely and informative walk. The walk is just one of the many activi-ties around the city this week to mark

Heritage Week. The theme this year is water and NCC has included a range of historic water stories, including an im-pressive display at Riverside Pool.Debbie says the walk will be great fun and a nice way to spend a few hours. It starts from 11am this Thursday and goes until 2pm. Book a spot on the tour at Council Customer Services. For more information about other activ-ities visit www.nelsoncitycouncil.co.nz.

Council left with extra tickets after RWC u-turnNow would be a good time to get friendly with Nelson City Council after a decision to award the council VIP tickets for the Rugby World Cup has left it with more than expected.NCC bought nine tickets, for the two origi-nal games awarded to Nelson, for its VIP’s after organisers Rugby World Cup 2011 could not guarantee it tickets. RWC 2011 has since changed its mind and has award-ed the city 20 VIP tickets. Two will go to the mayor Aldo Miccio and his wife, another six are earmarked for the Tasman Rugby Union and the rest, along with the other nine tickets, are up for grabs.Rugby World Cup organiser for Nelson,

Susan Coleman says council last week de-cided that she, along with Nelson Regional Economic Development Agency chief Bill Findlater, will nominate who will get the extra tickets. Chief among the contenders are those who could bring economic devel-opment to the region but others are likely to head towards people in the community.Susan says the decision on who gets the tickets will not be made until closer to the time and council was not upset about the dilemma but treated it as an “a nice sur-prise”. The tickets are for the Italy v Russia; Italy v United States with council having just the 20 for the Russia v Australia game.

The athletics and cricket pavilion at Saxton Field is taking big strides with framing for the $3.8 million building going up.The pavilion has been part of the long-term plans for Saxton Field and will mean national, and pos-sibly even international, events will be able to be played there. The pavilion will be finished in time for the South Island Masters Games in October and the South Island Colgate Athletics Championships early in 2012. And will bring the cricket oval up to first class standard and the football facilities, with the pitch inside the athletics track, are also to nation-al league standard. The facility is due to be opened in September this year prior to the Rugby World Cup.

50 years in RSA and counting

Workers graduate on massA lot of time and effort has paid off for 87 Nelson and Marlborough sup-port workers who have graduated with a National Certificate in com-munity support services (founda-tion skills) level two. The staff, who all work from home-based health-care company Access, received their certificates at a ceremony held in Stoke last week.

The support workers provide a range of services from personal care to household assistance, to help their clients maintain an independent lifestyle. Access regional manager Jo Kara is delighted for the staff. “They have worked so hard since last September and it I great for them to receive this recognition.

For 50 years Keith Highet has been a loyal RSA man, he has held every executive position of the Nelson branch since join-ing soon after his return from World War II in 1946.He knows the association in-side out.So when his family started to ar-rive on mass during his normal Wednesday night get together with other RSA members at the Suburban Club and then the area president Bill Hunter just happened to pop in, Keith knew something was up.“My daughter called earlier in the day to say she would come and have dinner with me at the club and then my son turned up with his family and I thought ‘christ this is going to cost me a bit’,” he jokes. “I had a bit of an inkling then that something was going on.”What was going on was a spe-cial celebration as Keith was awarded a 50 year certificate for service in the group. He says it was an honour. “I was very proud, I don’t take it lightly, it was very nice.”Keith, now 89, was awarded the Gold Star for contribution and long service in 1998.He was involved in the war in the pacific and later Egypt and Italy, although he says he didn’t see any front line fighting. He now lives in Stoke and says he is looking forward to another ANZAC Day this Monday.

In home, staying connected... at peace, at play

Without these critical relationships in their lives, children simply cannot reach their potential in thinking, creating, socializing or loving. It is as if you have the best quality seeds but nowhere to plant them.

Relationships are the foundation the sustaining soil, in which humans grow. Our first wish is to ensure that each and every child in a PORSE home is met with an authentic, ongoing and warm relationship with a single caregiver who recreates the security and enjoyment children enjoy with their own families.

When settled with PORSE for the early years of life, your child benefits from this special bond in every way, including optimal early brain development.

The difference with PORSE starts in the heart, with a relationship-based programme for children and families and educators which has been developed over 16 years. The home environment - which research repeatedly tells us is absent of the stress, inconsistency and noise of centres, offers each child the

opportunity for a combination of expected home routines, a warm and reliable environment, exciting outdoor experiences, social and musical play dates and ongoing childhood memories - all anchored by a relationship with an attuned educator.

The educator is the person who makes it all happen, the person upon whom the child can rely, the person they can trust. When the child feels safe in this way, they are then free to explore, learn and enjoy, to relax and get the most out of their day, just as they would in their own home.

PORSE is working throughout New Zealand helping children, parents, nannies, grandparents and educators enjoy the benefits of in-home childcare and early childhood training - the PORSE way!

Everyone who works with PORSE receives free workplace training, career opportunities and professional rewards recognising their work in raising and supporting with love and care the next generation of contributing New Zealand citizens.

Decades of research tells us that babies and young children need one key thing to flourish: consistent and sensitive loving relationships.

Welcome to a warm home

WARM AIR - HEALTHY HOME

With Winter nearly upon us now is a good time to be looking at how we can be more energy ef-ficient. Being energy efficient, and using as much of our abundant renewable energy resources as we can, benefits all New Zealanders. We save money by having lower power bills and have less of an impact on our environment. We also get to enjoy warmer, healthier homes and develop more profitable and competitive busi-nesses.Appliances use about a third of the average home’s electricity bill. This amount is growing as we continue to buy more appliances, and use them for more hours every day. When it’s time to replace your old appliances choos-ing more efficient models is a good way to save on your appliance electricity bill. You can also save money by using your appliances sensi-bly and switching them off when you aren’t using them.

Appliance Energy Saving Tips:Laundry• Use the sun to dry your clothes rather than a dryer. It could save you around $200 each year • Use cold water for washing your clothes. This uses 75% less electricity than hot water washes and, at four loads a week, could save you around $50 to $75 each year • Wash full loads of laundry rather than several smaller loads where possible.

Fridge/freezer• Switch off the old beer fridge - or get rid of it - and save between $100 and $300 a year • Check the temperatures with a fridge ther-mometer. Freezers should be between -15°C and -18°C, while fridge compartments should be around 2°C to 4°C • Check your fridge door seals - if the door doesn’t seal properly your fridge will be using more energy than it needs to. You can check it by

turning a torch on, putting it inside your fridge and closing the door. If you can see the torchlight, your seals need replacing • Don’t let ice build up in your fridge or freezer as this will make it very inefficient to run and may prevent it from maintaining safe temperatures for food storage • If your fridge or freezer is running continu-ously or nearly all the time, it may be faulty. A faulty fridge or freezer can pose a health risk by not keeping food cool enough - and can cost you a lot of money in wasted energy and having to re-

place food that has gone off prematurely.

General• Switch appliances off at the wall when you are not using them. Household stand-by energy costs the country over $100 million a year - which is enough to power over 55,000 homes. • Only use your heated towel rails when needed. By using it for four hours a day instead of all the time, you could save between $85 and $170 each year. • Use the power options on your computer to save electricity when you’re not using it. You can choose the amount of time after which your computer does simple tasks like turning off the

monitor and hard disks • Buy appliances that meet your needs. Appli-ances that are too big or too small generally won’t be as efficient and may cost more to buy. • Choose to buy energy-efficient appliances. Look for products displaying the energy rating label or ENERGY STAR® mark. • Use a household energy meter to monitor your electricity use. They give you a live reading of how much electricity your home is using, mak-ing it easier to see which appliances really make a difference. For more useful information and advice visit www.energywise.govt.nz.

How do I know which heating type is best for my home and then what size ap-pliance should I have? These are com-mon questions that arise when consid-ering a home heating solution. There are so many options available from wood, pellet, diesel, electric or gas, so a visit to 4 Seasons Home & Leisure, your local heating experts, is a must. They have installed hundreds of fires and are happy to share their extensive knowledge to ensure you buy the right appliance for your current and future needs. Imagine enjoying significantly reduced condensation, more efficient heating and cooling in your home, fewer UV

rays coming through your windows to damage furniture and chattels, and a quieter home. It’s all possible with Mag-icSeal, which boasts all the benefits of double glazing at a fraction of the price. MagicSeal is a discreet second layer ap-plied to existing window frames using a magnetic sealing system. The MagicSeal secondary glazing is fabricated from premium quality, UV stabilised acrylic with the frame col-our-matched to existing joinery (even timber finishes). It is fitted to the inside of the window to trap a layer of still air between it and the pane of glass. This trapped airspace reduces the rate of convective heat loss, and also acts as a baffle to reduce sound transmission. Using acrylic rather than glass, MagicSeal is able to offer a strong-er and safer product with better insula-tion properties than glass; tests show that MagicSeal’s acrylic can prevent the transfer of temperature five times better than glass providing greater living com-fort. MagicSeal was invented and devel-oped in New Zealand and since it was

launched in 1987 it has become an in-ternational market leader in secondary glazing. MagicSeal is the only BRANZ-appraised secondary glazing product available in Australia and New Zealand. For more information visit www.magic-seal.com or contact the local agent, Bar-ry Blommaart, on telephone 545 1398 or 0800 104466.

Energy rating labelsEnergy rating labels provide consumers with information on how much elec-tricity an appliance uses in a year, plus a star rating to show how energy efficient it is. The label helps the buyer compare between models and choose the most energy-efficient appliance that suits their needs. All new whiteware and heat pumps available for sale in New Zealand must display an energy rating label. Import-ers, manufacturers, retailers, and people selling new appliances have obligations to ensure that energy rating labels are fixed to or supplied with appliances for sale. This is a regulatory requirement de-tailed under minimum energy perfor-mance standards and labeling for indi-vidual products.

Proud Suppor ter and Employer of Volunteer FireFighters

Volunteer firefighters – they’re everyday people - the mechanic who fixes your car, the shopkeeper who sells you your milk - but when the siren sounds they don a dif-ferent hat, ready to offer assistance to those in need. With 8000 unpaid men and wom-en presently on call from North Cape to Bluff, volunteers really are the backbone of the NZ Fire Service (NZFS). Tim Bennion, Assistant Area Manager for NZFS in Tas-man Marlborough, says that means more than 80 percent of fire service personnel are willing to drop everything else as re-quired in order to help protect the lives and property of families, friends, neighbours and total strangers alike. Financial or ma-

terial reward isn’t a factor, so these selfless folk really are among the ranks of true Kiwi heroes. “We’re massively dependent on volunteers,” says Tim. NZ Fire Service statistics show in a normal year volun-teers attend 36,000 incidents, including fires, hazardous emergencies, medical as-sists and rescuing trapped people. Though they’re unpaid servants, volunteers carry out their work in a thoroughly profession-al manner. “Regardless of whether they are employed or volunteer staff, they consist-ently provide the standard of work that is required by the New Zealand Fire Service,” says Tim. While we acknowledge the many hours

that volunteers devote to their commu-nities, it’s also important to acknowledge their employers who allow them time off to respond to incidents. Having employ-ees absent from work can be both incon-venient and costly. Employing volunteer firefighters can, however, be a win/win situation. Not only do the fire service get the valuable use of a precious resource but employers get the benefit from the special-ist training that volunteers go through. Firefighters are trained to keep a cool head in difficult situations and their training de-velops first aid knowledge, leadership and management skills that can be useful in any work place. We have two volunteer fire brigades in our region, Stoke and Nelson. Both are manned by highly trained and dedicated members of our communities. So how can the general public help keep callouts to a minimum? NZFS takes a four-step approach: education, preven-tion, detection and action. Smoke alarms have and always will be a leading lifesaving tool, providing they are kept charged and placed in strategic areas of the home. “Smoke alarms are only activated when they detect something out of the ordinary and we applaud peo-ple who install these systems.”The ‘Keep looking while you’re cooking’ and ‘Don’t drink and fry’ campaigns as seen on TV are not exaggerated. Far too many fires

start this way with people putting a pan full of oil on a hot stove and then getting distracted. “It’s absolutely unbelievable how fast and fierce a fat fire is,” warns Tim. Residents are urged to follow the metre heater rule when drying clothes. Keep flammable articles at least a metre from heat sources and not in a position where if they fall it will be towards or onto a heater.Electric blankets should be checked at the beginning of each winter season. Chim-neys also need to be inspected and cleaned before the fire lighting season, both for structural soundness and to clear channels of soot buildup, bird nests and any other blockages which are fire hazards. When removing ashes from a fireplace always use a metal container. There have been many instances of plastic buckets and other combustible containers bursting into flames, sometimes hours later.Tim says it is also very helpful if the public refrain from phoning the local fire station and use the proper procedure of calling 111.

One of Nelson’s most promising track and field talents just completed an athletics sea-son of five-star quality.Broadgreen Intermediate School student Bailey Cotton, 12, beat the level 5 stand-ard, of the Colgate Star Awards system, in every one of the nine events he competed in throughout the summer.Bailey’s talents are even more impressive considering the versatility he has shown, excelling in a variety of different disciplines. He sprinted the 100m in just 13.7 seconds, jumped 4.52m in long jump, threw 9.68m in shot put and ran 800m in an impressive 2.29 minutes. “I was real proud. It’s the best I’ve ever done,” he says.Bailey started track and field when he was five years-old but noticed his talents after setting Richmond Athletics records, for his age, three years later. He has since won three gold medals at the South Island Colgate games in 100m, 800m and shot put, along with a silver medal in the relay. One battle Bailey had to overcome this sea-son was a false start in the 200m sprint at the Tasman Centre championship. He was disqualified from the race, although other competitors who false started in their races were allowed to remain in their lane. But the disqualification meant he was one event short on available points to become the over-all meet champion. Despite the disqualifica-tion, he still accumulated enough points to take the title. He even got some encouraging words from his idol, Nelson’s sprint champion Alex Jor-dan. “He just said ‘chin up’ and that it had happened to him before.”Bailey plans to continue athletics for as long as he can, he’s just unsure which event he will favour. His rugby ca-reer is also a big focus. He was a member of three Nelson Bays representative sides last year and has regularly being playing in rep sides one year his senior.

With the announcement that the South Island Colgate Games will be held at Saxton Oval next season, Bailey is targeting “records and gold medals” at the event on his home soil.Bailey is still weighing up whether to attend Nayland College or Waimea College for 2012.

Another horror injury during the past A-League football season means Jeremy Brockie has spent more time than he would like getting familiar with his couch. So on his “holiday” in Nelson this month he says he doesn’t mind doing a bit of work. The current All White has visited several Nelson schools over the past week and this week is coaching in a school holiday pro-gramme, organised by his childhood club, Richmond Athletic. He also has some coaching planned for Stu Jacobs’ academy in Wellington. But Jeremy says he is happy to give back to the sport in Nelson and is impressed with some of the talent coming out of his home town. “It’s great, for a small place we seem to be doing really well and hopefully in a few years we will have a few Nelson boys in the All Whites.”

Jeremy watched Nelson Suburbs play its Mainland League game against Halswell last weekend, and despite the loss, was impressed with his former team. “There are a lot of young guys there and it was only a couple of defensive lapses that cost them the game. They will only get better.”Jeremy currently plys his trade in the Hyundai A-League with the Newcastle United Jets and is back in Nelson after travelling to play China, where the All Whites drew 1-1. At just 23 he has been able to tick off the majority of his childhood goals, in-cluding being a profession-al footballer, playing for the All Whites, playing at the

Olympics and playing at the FIFA World Cup. But he says there is one more goal he

hopes to achieve before he hangs up his boots.“I really was to test myself in Europe, so one day I’d like to sign for a European team and play over there.”In the mean time Jer-emy has a rather large role to play for the All Whites. A bumper crop of young players are coming through the New Zealand system and forcing their way into Ricki Herbert’s team as they aim for quali-fication to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. He, along with other youngsters Michael McGlinchey, Marco Rojas, Kosta Barbarouses, Chris

Wood, Winston Reid and Tommy Smith, will form the nucleus of the national team leading up to the world cup and Jeremy, who made his debut as an 18 year-old, says it is an exciting time for the team.“Yeah, there are a lot of good young play-ers coming through and we are all pushing each other which is good. Team spirit is also really high and hopefully we can con-tinue to do well and qualify for Brazil.”Jeremy still has a year to run on his current contract in Newcastle and the former Nay-land College star says he is excited about the upcoming season with the addition of Socceroos star Jason Culina. “I love Newcastle, we have a really good lifestyle there and it’s a good team to be around. Hopefully I can stay injury-free and string some good performances to-gether, that’s the goal.”Jeremy is in Nelson for another couple of weeks before joining the Jets for perseason training.

Tasman Rugby League made a successful return to the sporting calendar with some high quality footy on display at Tahunanui Sports Grounds on Saturday.Defending champions Stoke Co-bras got off to a strong start with a 34-28 victory over a tough Mo-tueka Tigers outfit. While Tahunanui Tigers roared past Wakefield Wolves 48-6.Tasman Rugby League chairman Paul Lafotanoa was impressed by the high standard set in the opening round. “The quality to-day was right up there. If thats the standard set for the rest of

the season, because they can only improve, then it’s going to be a great competition,” he says.Pre-season hit-outs blew away the cobwebs and all teams re-acted strongly in their opening game, playing some enterprising and physical rugby league.Paul says a strong relationship with New Zealand Rugby League and double the amount of teams means the competition can con-tinue to be successful. To get more information regard-ing Tasman Rugby League, or to join a club, visit www.tasman-rugbyleague.co.nz.

bASkETbAll: Fico Finance Nelson Gi-ants got its NBL season off to a dissapoint-ing start last Saturday night, losing 98-85 to Waikato.

RUnning: Alpine Lodge Loop the Lake record holder Phil Costley couldn’t quite better his time from last year but he was good enough to win the 25km course around Lake Rotoiti on Saturday.Hokitika’s Tim Bolter kept him honest, thirty seconds behind at the head of the lake halfway point when they crossed the Travers but that’s where this race starts and Costley increased the gap for a comfort-able victory. Dallas Wichman had to work hard for his third placing as Nelson’s oth-er recent recruit in its trailruning ranks, Graeme Taylor, was hard on his heels only six seconds back.

EASTER CHAMPIONSHIPS AT U R D AY 2 3 & S U N D AY 24 A P R I L

With some of the biggest names in speedway coming to Nelson this weekend, punters will be in for a spectacular two days of racing. The annual Easter Championships are taking place at the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway this Saturday and

Sunday and it looks set to be the biggest meeting held at the track this season. The weekend will provide a great chance for the public to see top drivers racing, and right here in Nelson. “Especially with the NZ Super Saloon title coming next

year, it’s going to give everyone an insight into what that title is going to be like,” says club president Kris Carpenter. Most classes are almost at bursting point, with Kris saying “All the classes are just about full, we’re absolutely chocker.”Kris says this is very exciting for the club, as they haven’t had this amount of numbers for a long time.

Over both days of racing there will be plenty of action to keep everyone entertained but unfortunately the street stocks aren’t able to make it this year. “They scheduled their grand prix in Cromwell and we can’t run over the top of New Zealand titles so some people might be a little bit disappointed about that,” says Kris. The Easter Championships are run on the Saturday for all classes except midgets; who run their championship race on the Sunday because they are involved in a Barry Butterworth round on the Saturday.Gates open at 4pm on Saturday with racing starting at 5pm. On Sunday the gates open at 2pm with racing starting at 3pm. “Because it’s getting colder and the nights are coming in quite quickly we thought we’d pull it forward with Easter being so late in the year, we thought we’d help the punters out a little bit,” says Kris. The 2010/2011 season has been huge for the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway.Kris says the Easter Championships will be a good way to finish with a bang. “It will also give an indication of where we would like to be starting next season.”Unfortunately this weekend will be the second time a weekend of speedway has clashed with Crusaders games in Nelson. “It was too late [to change], we’d already released our entry forms, last time we pulled the meeting and went to just one night this time it’s a historical event, it’s a championship, so there is nothing we can do,” says Kris.In the Superstock class at the Easter Championships will see current New Zealand champion local Dale Ewers. Returning visitor from Rotorua Dave Anderson will be in the Midwest Motors Toyota powered McMurdo chassis. Also venturing across the Strait is Paul West

SIDECAR: Daniel Satherley and Tony McKenzie at the last Nelson Speedway meeting.

Blenheim’s Patrick North and Rob Flood will also be there. Murray, along with locals Steve Watson and Dave Leitch. A repeat visit is being made from Rotorua’s Peter Cradock and Huntly’s David Pilkington on their annual South Island tour. There will also be the usual Blenheim visitors David and Brett Allan and Andre Way, and rarely seen visitor Robert Lee. Greg Rooney from Christchurch is also returning. The Midgets will be fighting it out for the Barry Butterworth Series and will see Nick Marquet, who was the first Nelson car home in last year’s Easter

Championships, leading the local charge again with track mates Andrew Brown, Dudley White and Paul Quinn. Current South Island champion Dave Kerr returns with fellow Cantabs Steve McCallum and Brian Barclay and Dunedin traveler Gavin Wilkie, who never misses a Nelson Midget meet. The Easter Championships see gate prices staying at the regular rate – adults $15, child $7, family $30 and under 5s are free. Stoke JAB is are trying to put together an In-termediate 3 grade team as we have too many players in our Intermediate 2 team. Which means more children on the sideline and less playing time for each player. This grade suits 10, 11 and 12 year-olds that may or may not have played rugby before, This gives these kids a opportunity to play full games and play positions they may otherwise not get a chance to play and against an opposi-tion of equal size and talent. ‘It’s the least we can do’Mayors back drive to open accommodation for quake survivorsThe Christchurch earthquake has devastated a city so closely linked with our own and now it’s time for Nelsonians to help, say the regions two mayors.Already dozens of businesses, groups, schools and regular Nelsonians have dug deep to support the cause with donations and fundraisers, and today the city is due to come to a standstill as people ob-serve a two minute silence at 12.51pm, the time of the earthquake one week ago.Nelson has sent teams of emergency workers to

Christchurch to help find survivors and recover bodies. Nelson City Council has also opened its camping grounds to Cantabrians seeking refuge from the aftershocks and damage to the garden city. And today Nelson Weekly jumps on board to do its bit. Plenty of people are offering houses and baches on TradeMe and Facebook and a new initiative, Quake Break, aims to do it in an easy and effective way says Weekly publisher Steve Page.“Folk are hurting and we need to do what we can

to help. This is a way that will give people a chance to relax and de-stress in our beautiful region before returning to rebuild their city. “On our website, www.nelsonweekly.co.nz, is a

simple link to fill in for Nelson and Tasman people who have a house to lend, free of charge to people needing a rest from Christchurch.”Quake Break is being run in conjunction with

Radio Network, a Christchurch Newspaper, Rich-mond Mall and Nelson Weekly.Aldo and Richard say they are proud to see the way

the region has responded to the crisis and both councils will continue to help its southern neigh-bours in any way it can.

Fleeing Cantabrians have injected a shot in the arm to Nelson’s economy. The number of people travelling north from earthquake-ravished Christchurch has seen the region’s population swell and that is having a positive impact on Nelson businesses says Uniquely Nelson manager Rowena Richards.“I’m afraid it is very good for us, we don’t like to gain from somebody else’s misfor-tune but yes, there are quite a few Canta-

brians up here at the moment and a lot of them are shopping.”The boost in sales is making up for a sluggish summer for some retailers, ironically hindered by the Boxing Day quake which forced many Cantab’s to cancel holiday plans to Nelson in January. The Crusaders game in Nelson last Friday night also saw visitors travel to the region

from other parts of the South Island and international visitors who had planned a

trip to Christchurch before the quake are spending more time in the top of the south.Rowena says she expects Nel-son to remain busy for the rest of the week at least.“Town was packed on Friday

and we are expecting the same this week. A lot of people had come over from Blen-

heim and up from Murchison as well, so the game was very good for Nelson and I expect it to be the same this week.”Nicola Dolan, manager of Fashion Island, says retailers in the complex have noticed a jump in sales, particularly cafes. “Our cafes have been really busy but we have also had people that came up to Nel-son with only what they had on, so some of our stores have had people coming in to replace those clothes.”

Screaming Whangamoa House stu-dents silenced their peers at the Nelson College for Girls house athletics day last week, with a well choreographed chant-ing performance.Multiples of bright colours swept through the Saxton Field athletics track, with every one of the 1000 students dressing up in the most incredible way.Maungatapu House, whose members wear blue, were the eventual winners on the day, though Whangamoa stood out when the school congregated in the middle of the field for its chanting com-petition. Students got the day off aca-demic studies to compete in a number of athletics events and participation was at an enormous high with all students competing, even one on crutches.Costumes varied from superheroes to lions, even a Maitai hotdog made an ap-pearance. The day was also a fundraiser for the Christchurch earthquake appeal, with the sale of sausages and house-col-oured armbands raising money. Includ-ing a mufti day held earlier in the week, the total amount raised by the school for the appeal is $3000.

“I’m afraid it is very good for us.

– Rowena Richards.

Stoke seniors play sweet sounds

A group of seniors are picking and

strumming to a new tune after start-

ing their own ukulele group.

The yet-unnamed group has half a

dozen members for its weekly meeting

but is hoping to grow at the same rate

other ukulele groups have.

Tutor Ruth Ryan says the group, which

has only been running for three weeks

aims to give seniors a chance to learn

a new instrument while having a lot of

fun.“It’s good for elderly to learn some-

thing new and keep their brain active.”

The group is for people over 60 and

caters for beginners through to inter-

mediate players.

First timer Norma Miller says she is

having a blast on the ukulele. “It’s a

lot of fun and really social, we get to

have a sing-a-long and they are really

patient as well.”

The group welcomes any new peo-

ple who are keen to come and learn a

new instrument. The ukulele players

meet at the Stoke Memorial Hall each

Thursday from 11am.

the raids, including two
