From the Director,

A few weeks ago, I was struck by a common theme running through the acceptance speeches at the Tony Awards: gratitude to teachers and mentors. Teachers instilled a love of the arts that carried these creative people through their careers. I am proud to play some small role in that sort of development. From classes, plays and exhibits to our affiliated groups, the Center for the Arts offers many ways to engage the community in the arts. Our performers can always use help back stage, or, if you are more comfortable in the audience, purchase a season ticket package and you will play a vital role in the success of the arts.

We have a great lineup of classes, workshops, special events, exhibits and productions this season. We expanded our educational programs into chorus, music, dance, visual arts and theatre. In October, our 16th Annual Carrollton Festival of the Arts will feature more than 70 artists from around the country.

During the holidays, our ballet program will again produce the stunning Nutcracker Ballet. A collaboration with the UWG opera program will present Amahl and the Night Visitors. Carroll County Community Theatre will stage a production of The Lion in Winter. The Carroll County Community Chorus will delight with a concert of traditional holiday music and the Carrollton Symphony Orchestra will perform selections from the movie, Polar Express. Holiday shoppers can purchase original artwork and locally-authored books during the Small Packages exhibit.

Being a supporter of the arts enriches the soul, but it has other advantages, too, such as discounts only available to members. Join the Center for the Arts at any of our membership levels and start reaping the benefits.

We are nothing without your support and participation, so a heart-felt thank you for making the Center for the Arts a vibrant place to be. We look forward to serving you this fall!

Sincerely,Tim Chapman, Superintendent of Arts

Thank you to the following organizations for their support throughout the year:

Melanie earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Ceramics in 1991 from what is now the University of West Georgia. She began teaching children’s art programs for the City of Carrollton in 1990. Melanie continues to share her knowledge and talents with our community through her Blue Heron Art Studio, which she opened in 1991. We love Mrs. Melanie, one of Carrollton’s Picassos. Clogging classesClogging has origins in folk dances of the British Isles, Africa and pre-Columbian America. Settlers in the American South combined elements of all of these to form a uniquely American dance style. The Center for the Arts is happy to welcome Peggy Robinson, who taught clogging for 25 years at Peggy’s School of Dance, back to the dance floor.

Luncheon with Sybil Rosen, author OF L iv ing in the Woods in a TreeAugust 29 // 12:30PM // $30

Living in the Woods in a Tree is an intimate glimpse into the life of music legend, Blaze Foley, seen through the eyes of Sybil Rosen, for whom Foley wrote his most widely known song, “If I Could Only Fly.” Rosen offers a firsthand account of their life together in a Georgia tree house during the countercultural 1970s and Foley’s transformation from reticent hippie musician to enigmatic singer/songwriter. Foley’s songs have been covered by Lyle Lovett, Willie Nelson, John Prine and Merle Haggard.
