day, before offering center stage to that day's key-note speaker of this day, Alice Vadrot (University ofVienna), who spoke intriguingly about her researchon “Negoang conservaon and sustainable use ofmarine biodiversity in the high seas: insights intoscience and polics”. In the aernoon Dr. César Gir-aldo Herrera from ZMT kindly jumped in on shortnoce for Dr. Kimberley Peters, and convened aRound Table on the issue of Decolonising OceanGovernance.

All talks framed the official scienfic programmecomprising workshops and meengs of five of thesix working groups of the COST Acon OceanGov,with a focus on jointly working on their publicaonswith regard to the six core themes of this Europeannetwork: Land-Sea Interacon, Area-Based Man-agement, Seabed Resource Management, Ocean,Climate Change and Acidificaon, as well as, Fisher-ies Management. Parcipang researchers presen-ted their latest results from their research, whilepreparing for finalising their joint peer chapters tobe published within the remaining months of theAcon.

Last but not least we would like to thank our hostsValenna Turk, Alenka Malej, and Jerneja Penca forthe perfectly organised flow of events including aninformave walk around the NIB premises…. And ona final note, thanks to all those friendly beings whomade the last evening in Piran a very memorableone … To Europe!About the European COST Project “Ocean Gov-ernance for Sustainability”

For several years now, the European Union has beenincreasingly interested in quesons on sustainableocean management. Above all, an impression ofgreat conceptual fragmentaon and missing con-necons of local, regional, naonal and global ap-proaches becomes apparent. The aim of the four-year European COST project “Ocean Governance for

Sustainability” is thus to address problems of cur-rent legislaons and regulaons in a transdisciplin-ary way in order to adapt exisng strategies inresearch and policy. The integrave approach whichbrings together natural, social and human sciences,as well as, internaonal know-how is a specific fea-ture of the COST projects funded by the EuropeanUnion. The conference in Piran was the 4th networkconference of the project, which had been estab-lished in September 2016 under the European COSTfunding line with the Acon Chair Anna-KatharinaHornidge (ZMT).

With climate change inducing alteraons andeffects on the marine environment for decades tocome, ClimeMarine is taking a first step towards cli-mate-proofing ecosystem-based management ofSwedish seas. Hence, the implicaon of climate

change scenarios and associated data uncertainesare considered when developing guidelines for eco-system-based climate adaptaon and Marine Spa-al Planning. Also through connuous dialogue andco-creaon of research quesons, the project in-vesgates limitaons and opportunies for differ-ent sectors such as fisheries and aquaculture, tounderstand and integrate climate change into theirdecision-making process.

The subject of governance of oceanic systems andcoastlines is moving into the centre of Europeanstrategic and sustainability interests. Yet, it suffersfrom a high degree of fragmentaon and the lack ofa cross-scalar approach to addressing prevailingpolicy shortcomings. The COST Acon on “OceanGovernance for Sustainability - Challenges, Oponsand the Role of Science” comprises a unique, trans-disciplinary network of 28 countries with regionaland internaonal outreach. The network aims toestablish an integrave vision and a series ofapproaches that informs research and future policydirecons on crosscung sustainability-drivenissues related to the fragmented governance frame-work of oceans, seas and coastlines within regionalwaters, and the open ocean in areas beyondnaonal jurisdicon. The network differs fromthemac predecessors in two disnct ways: Whileaending to the mulple flows and connecvies
