  • Last Sunday we heard Solomon ask God for an “understanding heart” when he had the chance to ask for anything he wanted. He choose wisely. This week we see in the heart of Jesus such an understanding heart.

Trying to get away to a de-serted place by himself, to grieve at the news of the death of his cousin John the Baptist, Jesus sees the crowds that have gone ahead of him. Scripture says, “his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick.” What a heart! If I — if we — could have the heart of Christ, to be so present to

each other in our needs and in our hearts, really pre-sent, then we would experience the real presence and power of God. I believe that’s why Jesus tells the disciples who asked Jesus to send the crowds away so they could go take care of themselves and buy food, “There is no need for them to go away; give them some food your-selves.” Jesus calls for that kind of presence to others in need. When the disciples do feed the people, they experience the power and presence of God in the midst and there is more than enough food for all of them. It is the miracle of how God doubles our joy and divides our grief when we are really present to each other. I think that is something of what the “real pres-ence” means in the Eucharist, the Body and Blood of Christ. We are invited into that Presence, to share and be that Presence in the world. St. Paul gives us the assurance in the second reading today that nothing can separate us from that presence, “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God that comes to us in Christ Jesus our Lord.” I believe and am convinced of that too. United with you in the real presence of Christ,

    Dear Friends,

    dying for?”

    Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Loving God, as a mother tenderly gathers her children and as a father joyfully welcomes his own, so in the compassion of Jesus you nurture and nourish us, feed us and heal us.

Let the bread Jesus multiplied in the wilderness be broken and shared among us. May the communion we experience with each other in the holy Eucharist compel us to seek communion with everyone in loving service toward all.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen.

C.A.R.E. CORNER We are working our way through creation and we are up to the point where humans enter the picture. The Book of Genesis hints at the relation-ship between the human and the Divine by plac-ing man as the final and ultimate creation, the only visible creature able to know and love his Creator (CCC #356). Humans were made in the “image of God,” called to share in God’s own life. God declared that to be a “very” good thing, after which God took a break. So the world, in its entirety, existed before we did and became the source of life for us. It provided us with a place to live, a daily food supply, and the raw materials for clothing, heat and other comforts. It also pro-vided us with beauty to inspire awe and remind us of God’s presence. And it is from this home that we forged our relationships with each other, with all other living creatures and most importantly, with God. So, as we asked last week, what is our Earth to the Divine? Our earthly home was given as a gift, encompassing all the things we would ever need to live fully. This gift was given as a show of God’s love and devotion.

Spirit Moments “Life is more than food, the body is more than clothing.”

    — John Dear, SJ, from The Questions of Jesus

What does life and body mean for you? Can they be primarily for sharing and serving as they seem to have been for Jesus? We are not “on our own” in this calling to share and serve. Each and every day, we are empowered by the Love of God through the power of the Holy Spirit! Jesus’ compassion compelled him to share and to nourish, to offer life. The challenges in our lives help us develop compassion and refine our heart senses. Can we step back from our abundance, take a deep breath and see with our hearts’ eyes what Jesus saw? Spirit and Unity are expressions of life and body representing the Magnificent Love of God flowing through the body of Christ. Can you imagine the deep desire you have to feed and clothe your own children expanding to the children of the world?

My name is Kevin Pranaitis and I am extremely excited to be the new Youth Minister here at St. Thomas the Apostle! My wife, Stephanie, and I are parishioners here and frequent the 9:00 a.m. Mass – you might even remember seeing me singing in the back row of choir. I hope you are excited as I am for this new year, and I ask that you continue to pray for God’s amazing presence in our youths’ lives. Thank you for your support of our youth and God bless!

NEW... Youth Minister at St. Thomas!

Pro-Life Message The Church … is called to proclaim the gift of life, to serve life, and to promote a culture of life. … The proclamation of life, life in abundance, must be the heart of the new evange-lization. For true life – our salvation – can only be found in the reconciliation, freedom and love which are God’s gra-cious gift.

    —Pope Benedict XVI

August 3 Question of the Week

How has Jesus worked miracles for your family?

Junior High Faith Formation A big thank you to the following youth who repre-sented the community of St. Thomas so well on the annual summer mission; Mackenzie Dart, Ellie Pe-tersen, Brooke Eber, Brittany Reynolds, Leanne Hay, and Alexis Black. They joined youth from four other parishes in the Diocese of Joliet who spent three days and two nights working at the Fox Valley Pavilion in East Aurora, at the Sisters of the Sacred Heart Mis-sion in Hopkins Park and at Feed My Starving Chil-dren in Aurora. Their work inspired kindness and compassion from many and collegiality and unity amongst themselves. This community is proud of their participation in building the city of God here on earth! The following verse was written by the group after a day spent working at a food distribution site in Hopkins Park:

We thought we would see an impatient mob, but instead we saw a lot of good people. We thought we would see a few cars waiting in line, but instead we saw over 100 cars. We thought we would see fighting, instead we saw love. We thought we would see a dirty homeless crowd, but instead we saw homeless people who were clean. At first we felt fear, but then we felt faith. We thought we would do a little, but instead we did a lot. We thought we would hear much arguing, but instead heard much praise. We thought we were pretty open-minded, but actually, we now know that we can do a lot better at learning empathy.

The Eco Mission Lives On! As a follow up to the St. Thomas Eco Mission of early June, St. Thomas Teens with Character spon-sored a group of 23 who participated in the DuPage River Clean-up. The site for St. Thomas was located at Washington and 87th Street. After three hours of trash collection, the group gathered 24 bags of refuse, a lot of Styrofoam and plenty of electrical wire. Vol-unteers then began a campaign that asked passing motorists to honk if they loved the environment; 53 honks later they felt pretty hopeful! Thank you to the families and youth who gave so generously of their time and effort.

We help you understand your rights and options. If you are behind on your mortgage payments, or are worried about missing a payment in the future, call 630-260-2500 or visit www.dhoc.org. See the OSJ bulletin board for more information.

The Surveys Said…. We would like to thank ALL of those that com-pleted the Affordable Housing Surveys in June. 289 usable surveys were returned. 64% (185 responses) came from Naperville residents; 25% (71 responses) came from Aurora residents. Ninety percent (261respondents) owned their home. Of those, only 46% (120) felt they could afford to buy the home they live in at today’s market value. Of the total of 289 respondents, 70% (202) indicated they believed STA SHOULD be working toward the goal of increasing affordable housing opportunities in Naperville, 13% (37 respondents) felt STA SHOULD NOT, and 17% indicated “Don’t Know” or left the re-sponse blank. We believe the majority response to this last item is in solidarity with several of the Themes of Catholic Social Teaching (Call to Community/Participation, Rights of Workers, etc.). It was apparent from several responses that many wanted to know more about affordable housing, and how to foster it in Naperville, or elsewhere. To assist those interested in knowing more, there is a presenta-tion at the St. Thomas website (www.stapostle.org) fol-low this path: “Ministries”, Service Commission - Out-reach and Social Justice”, scroll down to “DuPage United” (#636), click on the title/link, then look under Ministry News and Information for “Information on the Affordable Housing Issue in Naperville” DuPage United has been working to influence the Naperville City Council to take action. Currently, the Council is awaiting the results of a study they commis-sioned on the topic. Stay tuned. Thank you again for your participation.

St. Thomas Team Celebrates in Haiti Fr. Fritz, Robert Frazier, and Anne Schultz were recently in Duchity to represent St. Thomas at the tenth anniversary celebration of the establishment of the parish of Ste. Marie Madeleine. The three hour Mass on July 24 - their feast day - was concelebrated by the Bishop and 30 Haitian Priests, with two Dea-cons in attendance. A rendition of the Psalm for the Day (Psalm63), written in Creole by Robert, was sung after the second reading. After Communion, Anne and Robert had an opportunity to speak to the people - in Creole - and here is a translation of what was said:

(Anne) “Robert, Fr. Fritz, and I are very happy to see you and to greet you in the name of Fr. Joel and the people of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish. It is a privi-lege for us to be here today on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the founding of the parish of Ste. Marie Madeleine. We say Thank You to Bishop Romulus (the bishop of the Diocese of Jeremie) be-cause he is here among us. We say Thank You to Fr. Marcel for inviting us to this grand celebration.”

(Robert) “Our Twinning Relationship has been a great blessing for all of us. To all the people of Duchity, we say: ‘Thank you very much for your faith, for your love, for your example, for your happy hearts. We will pray to God for many additional decades of bless-ings.’ The people of St. Thomas the Apostle will pray for the people of Duchity; and we know the people of Duchity will pray for the people of St. Thomas the Apostle. May God continue to bless us all. God Bless You.”

Stonebridge Food Drive Stocks Pantry Once again Carolyn Lowrie and Bud Hildebrand of our Care Pantry organized a summer food drive in the Stonebridge, Stonegate, Harris Farms, Concord Valley, and Cambridge Chase neighborhoods. With their cadre of some 70 volunteers, 763 (up from 608 last year) bags of food were gathered, sorted, and stored in the Care Pantry. Some of the food was given to Marie Wilkinson Care Pantry in Aurora. This annual event helps get our pantry through the summer months. Thanks to all that worked and contributed. It was a fun event!

Pastoral Care Health Conscious St. Thomas Parishioners: Health Ministry volunteers will be offering monthly blood pressure screenings on the FIRST SUNDAY of each month, September through May in the 2008-2009 parish calendar. This coming year they will be holding the screen-ings in the DEACONS’ OFFICE, which is to the left of the Narthex, when exiting church or otherwise known as, the “west wing”. The screenings follow the 7:30, 9:00 and the 10:45 a.m. masses. This new schedule will be less confusing and more accessible to all. There will be many informational/educational handouts and pamphlets available for you. Please help yourself to these or ask the ministry volunteers for assistance. Also, please accept a wallet card with the screen-ing data recorded and carry that card with you at all

times. If you currently have a wallet card, bring that card with you to each screening. If full, a new card will be provided. The card is for you and your personal physician. As previously written, screenings are a “moment in time” recording of your blood pressure affected by many, many issues. Your doctor will need many home monitoring readings and site screenings to make a diagnosis of hypertension or to assess your current BP medication regime. Remember, you are your best health advocate. Educate yourself on how to obtain the best home and site blood pressure screenings. See the www.americanheart.org or www.cdc.gov on line for assistance or ask your Parish Nurse for help.

The August 2008 St Thomas the Apostle Jobs Min-istry Meeting will be held on Thursday evening August 21, at 7:00 p.m. in the St. Thomas Lighthouse. The speaker will be Jim Fitzgerald. Jim’s presentation, Seven Obstacles to a Successful Job Search, which he is continuously revising, has been very well received in the past. Jim focuses on the seven things that he has seen get in the way of job seekers time and time again. Commonly attendees say, “I thought Jim was talking directly to me and my situation”. Jim’s directness and candor can be pleasantly refreshing. Mr. Fitzgerald is the president of his own Oak Brook based career transition and executive coaching firm. Jim was one of the founders of the Career Transi-tion Center of Chicago, located at Old St. Patrick’s Church in Chicago. Jim served as its Chairman of the Board for five years. Mr. Fitzgerald has written over 140 published arti-cles on the job search process. You will find his Job Ministry presentation to be very positive and informa-tive; if you are in career transition, it would be a great way to revitalize your search. Please plan to attend this very informative presenta-tion by Jim Fitzgerald as he shares his Job Transition experiences. Contact Jim Breen at [email protected] for more information.
