Question 5

Reports of at least one male X in Arkansas in 2004 were investigated and subsequently published in April 2005 by a team led by the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology (Fitzpatrick et al., 2005). No definitive confirmation of those reports emerged, despite intensive searching over five years following the initial sightings.

In late September 2006, a team of ornithologists from Auburn University and the University of Windsor published reports of their own sightings of X along the Choctawhatchee River in northwest Florida, beginning in 2005 (Hill et al., 2006). These reports were accompanied by evidence that the authors themselves considered suggestive for the existence of X. Searches in this area of Florida through 2009 failed to produce definitive confirmation.

X tested a modified X-Honda 007 car which they intended to use in an attempt to set the land speed record for a car meeting FIA Formula One regulations. The team aimed for 400 km/h (249 mph), and were planning to attempt the record at Bonneville Salt Flats. The driver for this project was Alan van der Merwe. The modified chassis performed a shakedown test on the 10,000ft-long runway at Mojave Airport in California, on 5 November 2005, under the supervision of safety co-ordinator executive, Jamie Hardwick. The four published times recorded in this test were 393, 405, 410 and 413 km/h. However, these tests did not constitute the record attempt itself and waterlogging of the salt flats resulted in the attempt being postponed. The chassis was used by Honda, to set a new record the following year.

Degree 5

The title of one of the movies of the person from Degree 5 comes from a dialogue from this movie.

Although it was an A-list movie, with established stars and first-rate writers—no one involved with its production expected it to be anything out of the ordinary; it was just one of dozens of pictures being churned out by Hollywood every year. The film was a solid, if unspectacular, success in its initial run, rushed into release to take advantage of the publicity from the invasion of North Africa a few weeks earlier. Despite a changing assortment of screenwriters frantically adapting an unstaged play and barely keeping ahead of production, and the hero attempting his first romantic lead role, it won three Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

David Morrell says that in choosing the name he was inspired by "the sound of force" in the name of X apples which he encountered in Pennsylvania. Peter Gunnarsson X sailed from Sweden to New Sweden (SE Pennsylvania/Southern NJ/Northern Delaware) in the 1640s, and soon the name would flourish in New Sweden. Today, many of his descendants can still be found in this region of the US. Morrell felt that its pronunciation was similar to the surname of Arthur Rimbaud, the title of whose most famous work A Season in Hell, seemed to him "an apt metaphor for the experiences that I imagined X would have”.

X is the lead character of a book by David Morell as well as a movie franchise based on a character who had participated in the event of Degree 2.

Question 1

X is the seventh song on Bruce Dickinson's album Accident of Birth from 1997. The demo version of the song is included on the Best Of Bruce Dickinson album. On the same CD, Bruce states that X was originally written for a movie called Chemical Wedding, which existed only as a script at the time (it was finally produced and released only in May 2008). The title refers to a passage in the Bible, in the book of Isaiah 53, which describes a man who takes on the sins of all mankind. According to Catholic teaching, this figure foreshadows Jesus, who died for mankind to redeem them:

He was despised and forsaken of men,A X and acquainted with grief; And like one from whom men hide their faceHe was despised, and we did not esteem Him.Surely our griefs He Himself bore,And our sorrows He carried;Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken,Smitten of God, and afflicted

Question 2

X is a 1977 novel by Pulitzer and Nobel Prize-winning American author Toni Morrison. It follows the life of Macon "Milkman" Dead III, an African-American male living in Michigan, from birth to adulthood.

This book won the National Books Critics Award, was chosen for Oprah Winfrey's popular book club, and was cited by the Swedish Academy in awarding Morrison the 1993 Nobel Prize in literature. Barack Obama has listed it as one of his favorite books of all time.

Question 3

X is New York City's most populous borough with 2.5 million residents, and second largest in area. It is also the western most County (Borough) on Long Island.

Since 1896, X has had the same boundaries as Kings County, which is now the most populous county in New York State and the second most densely populated county in the United States, after New York County (Manhattan).

X was an independent city until its consolidation with New York City in 1898, and continues to maintain a distinct culture, independent art scene, and unique architectural heritage. Many  X neighborhoods are ethnic enclaves where particular ethnic groups and cultures predominate.

Question 4

Often, teenage couples engage in consensual sexual conduct as part of an intimate relationship. This may start to occur before either participant has reached the age of consent, or after one has but the other has not. In such cases, the older of the two participants is technically guilty of statutory rape. Most jurisdictions, as previously stated, consider the act itself to be prima facie evidence of guilt, as any consent between partners, even if freely given, does not meet the standard of law as it is given by a minor. The accused in these cases normally has no defense.

This has often been considered unjust, leading to the passage of so-called “X" laws, which serve to reduce or eliminate the penalty of the crime in cases where the couple's age difference is minor and the sexual contact is only considered rape because of the lack of legally-recognized consent.

Page 55: 18th Feb 2010 Quiz - NIT DGP

Question 5

The term X comes from the Portuguese words meaning Holy Cross. The name was that given to a church that existed on a site on the western side of the railway station, at the site presently occupied by the Sacred Heart Boys High School/Sacred Heart Church and which had been devastated by the locals during their conquest of the region from Portugal. This former parish church gave its name to the locality. The church was constructed in the early 1930s. The parish has around 14,000 parishioners with Fr. Abel as the present parish priest.

Page 56: 18th Feb 2010 Quiz - NIT DGP

Question 6

In June 1997, X began filming their movie debut with director Bob Spiers. Meant to accompany the album, the comical style and content of the movie was in the same vein as The Beatles' films in the 1960s such as A Hard Day's Night. The light-hearted comedy, intended to capture the spirit of the X featured a plethora of stars including Roger Moore, Hugh Laurie, Elton John, Jennifer Saunders, Richard E. Grant, Elvis Costello, and Meat Loaf. Despite being a commercial success, the film was widely panned by critics; the movie was nominated for seven awards at the 1999 Golden Raspberry Awards where they "won" the award for "Worst Actress".
