    A FEW SUGGESTIONS WITH REGARD TOBABY'S OUTFIT^

THE BAND.The first need of a young infant is the fineflannel bandwhich should, in three or four months, be

replaced by one knit of Saxony wool. These bands are knit inwhat is called, in the knitting nomenclature, " seaming," like thetop of an enormous stocking. They should be large enough toslip up over the child's bowels, but should, when unstretched, clingclosely to the body, and give what little support is needed to theabdomen. These knitted bands should be worn both winter andsummer, as they are excellent preventatives against the boweltroubles so prevalent with young children. Indeed, many conserva-tive ladies keep them upon their children until they are three orfour years of age.

WOOLEN SHIRTS.These comfortable little garments havebecome a necessity even to the poorest baby. The home-madeknitted shirts, so popular a few years ago, are almost entirely super-seded by the machine-made Saxony or Cashmere. The latter arethe most charming productions. Soft as silk, they are daintily fin-ished with pliable silk bindings, beautifully ornamented with a finefeather-stitching. The Saxonys cling close to the body, and areeverything one could wish in that grade of goods.

FLANNEL FOR BABY.In choosing flannel for infants' wear,:select from the finer grades that which is soft and of even texture. It need not necessarily be extremely fine, but must be soft andpleasant to the touch. Only such as is made from the finer quality

2 BEST & CO., LILIPUTIAN BAZAAR, Js^EW YORK.of wool should come in contact with a baby's sensitive skin. It isoften asserted as a plea for the cheaper, coarser quality, that, nomatter how fine at first, all flannel becomes hard and leathery byconstant washing. This assertion is incorrect./ All flannel and knit goods should be washed in warm water

/comfortably warm to the handsinto which a table-spoonful of/ ammonia has been thrown. If soap is used, it should be white and

dissolved in the water. In case of spots, a little soap and a fewdrops of ammonia may be rubbed on the fabric ; but much rubbingtends to harden the goods. Souse the garments up and down in thewater, squeezing and rubbing them gently with the hands ; whenclean, rinse in clear water of the same temperature as that in whichthey were washed. Be sure and rinse out all suds, then pass themthrough a third clean water which is also of the same degree ofheat as the other two. /

If a blue tone is desired, add to this last water a few drops ofblueing.

It would probably be a source of surprise to most mothers tofind how little, if any, money is saved by buying materials andmaking them up at home ; for those who have not looked into thematter have no idea of the system attained in the manufacture ofchildren's clothing, and the wonderfully low prices resulting there-from. All materials are purchased in large quantities direct fromthe manufacturers. The goods are so cut that little or nothing iswasted ; a large number of hands are constantly employedno oneperson doing the whole work on a garment, but each a special partwhich she alone attends to. By so dividing the labor, each personbecomes very rapid, as well as expert, in her special branch. Awhole wardrobe is thus made in a very small fraction of the timerequired for its successful manufacture at home.

On the other hand, if a lady purchases her materials in thesmall quantities needed, she must necessarily pay the highest prices

BEST & CO., LILIPUTIAN BAZAAE, NEW YORK. 3for each article used, besides often buying much more than is actu-ally required. A few extra inches of fine lace or expensive em-broidery for each dress amount to quite a sum when the wholewardrobe is considered, while the extra cambric, flannel, etc., whichoften remain unutilized, would probably pay for the making ofseveral articles.

Finally, the experience acquired by making thousands of theselittle garments is offset, in the mother's case, by considerable ex-perimenting, not always followed by perfectly satisfactory results.

For an infant's first wear, ordinary little slips of fine Englishnainsook are most suitable. These are very simply made, and aretrimmed with fine dainty edgings. Six are sufficient, although eightor nine will be found very convenient in cases of emergency.

After the first few weeks of baby's life, one's more intimatecallers desire a peep at the little stranger, and the most sensiblemother cannot restrain a pardonable pride in her darling's personalappearance. The little slip, which has thus far formed baby's onlyouter garment, is partially discardedworn only at night or earlymorningand the little dress takes its place. This is alsomade of fine English goods. The tiny little yokes and sleevesare composed of hair-tucks and feather-stitching, while the wholeis edged with the daintiest embroideries. The skirts also receivetheir share of tucking and feather-stitching, and the little garmentscannot fail to please the most fastidious taste. Six of thesedresses are considered sufficient, although, as in the case of thelittle slips, a larger number is desirable.

An exquisite little dress, very suitable for christening or anyother dressy occasion, is hand-madethe yoke, sleeves, sash andskirt principally composed of tucks, delicate hem-stitching anddrawn workand the whole finished with the daintiest little edgeof embroidery.

4 BEST & CO., LILIPUTIAN BAZAAR, NEW YORK.In addition to these, a couple of those charming little

wrappers, in the various styles described, are almost indispensableif baby's advent is in any but the hottest part of the year. In fact, even then these are extremely useful as protection from draughtsor the chilly air of evening or early morning.

SHORT CLOTHES FOR BABY.The usual age for shorten-ing an infant's clothes is from four to six months. This, however,is not an arbitrary rule, as " circumstances alter cases " in thisas in many other things. The weather, the method of heatingthe house, the exposure baby is subjected to, and many other con-ditions, must be taken into consideration.

The habit of cutting off the long slips and dresses is not aneconomical or a satisfactory one. The little garments having alreadyreceived considerable wear from constant washings, will soon breakaway at both sleeves and yokes, hardly paying for the work ofshortening.

The flannels which present a respectable appearance may beadvantageously made into short skirts ; but, as the underwear inshort clothes is as conspicuous as the dress, the discolored andshrunken skirts are scarcely worth changing.

IN this Catalogue we have not attempted to give a description of allthe goods we have in stock, but have selected such as Ave think mostdesirable ; neither are the cuts designed to show the patterns of theembroidery used. We carry a very large assortment, made to suitvarious tastes, and, if customers when ordering will state their preferencesin regard to embroiderywhether a small close pattern, or somethingmore effective is wantedit will often enable us to make more satisfactoryselections than if confined strictly to the numbers described.

We have found our plan of giving special information inanswer to each individual inquiry to be much moresatisfactory than the Catalogues formerly issued, for itwas impossible in that way to give our out-of-towncustomers a fair idea of our stock of those goods.

The time necessary for its preparation obligedus to have the matter in the hands of the Engraversand Printers long before all of the styles for the seasonwere ready, so that by the time the book reached ourcustomers our stock contained very many desirable goodsnot shown in it, and many of the styles prepared earlyhad been sold out ; therefore, it never represented fullywhat we intended to have it represent, /. e., the goods
