MEC407:TURBO MACHINERY L:2 T:1 P:0 Course Objectives: To widen appreciation of the variety of phenomena covered in turbomachinary and the techniques available to handle them To give students the basics of various turbo- machines To give students the basic idea of compressors Unit I Steam Turbines : Type of Turbines, Constructional details of turbine, Application of turbines, Losses in turbines, Velocity diagram of turbine, Impulse and Reaction turbine, Degree of reaction, Output efficiency, Intro to compounding of turbines Unit II Gas Turbines : Theory and fundamental of gas turbines, Joules cycle, Assumptions of simple gas turbines, Cycle analysis, Work ratio, Concept of maximum and optimum pressure ratio, effect of operating variable on thermal efficirncy, Regeneration, inter cooling and reheating, Closed and semi closed gas turbine plant Unit III Jet Propulsion : Type of jet engine, application of jet engines, Theory of jet propulsion, energy flow through jet engines, Thrust and propulsive efficiency, Turbo jet and turbo fan engines, pulse jet and ram jet engines, thrust segmentation, Concept of rocket propulsion. Unit IV Rotary Compressors : Concept of rotary compressors, Root blower and vane type compressor, centrifugal compressor, Velocity diagram and expression for work done, Slip factor, Power input factor Unit V Hydraulic turbines : Kaplan and Francis turbines, Velocity triangles of reaction turbines, Draft tube and their types, Classification of hydro turbines, Velocity triangles, Head and various efficiencies, Impulse momentum equation, Work done by turbines, Main components and features of pelton turbine, Number of buckets Unit VI Centrifugal pump : Net positive suction head (NPSH), series and parallel arrangement, Introduction to pumps, Different types of heads and efficiencies, Velocity triangles of centrifugal pump, Cavitation in pumps Text Books: 1.
