The Lottery Ticket
Worksheet- 1
Tutorial Link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afM5wIOc3M4&feature=youtu.be
Read the passage and answer the questions that follow. Refer to the text and
answers the questions.
Ivan Dmitritch, a middle-class man who lived with his family on an income of twelve
hundred a year and was very well satisfied with his lot, sat down on the sofa after
supper and began reading the newspaper.
“I forgot to look at the newspaper today,” his wife said to him as she cleared the
table. “Look and see whether the list of drawings is there.”
“Yes, it is,” said Ivan Dmitritch; “but hasn’t your ticket expired?”
“No, I bought it on Tuesday”
“What is the number?”
“Series 9,499, number 26.”
“All right ….. We will look ….. 9,499 and 26”
Ivan Dmitritch had no faith in lottery luck, and would not, as a rule, have consented
to look at the lists of winning numbers, but now, as he had nothing else to do and as
the newspaper was before his eyes, he passed his fingers downwards along the
columns of numbers. And immediately, as though in mockery of this skepticism.
No further than the second line from top, his eye was caught by figure 9,499! Unable
to believe his eyes, he hurriedly dropped the paper on the knees without looking to
see the number of the ticket, and, just as he thought he had drank a glass of cold
water, he felt an agreeable chill in the pit of the stomach; tingling and terrible and
sweet.
“Masha, 9’499 is there!” he said in a hollow voice.
26/84
His wife looked at his astonished and panic-stricken face, and realized that he was
not joking.
“9’499?” she asked, turning pale and dropping the folded tablecloth on the table.
“Yes, yes…..it is there!”
“And the number of ticket?”
“Oh, yes! There’s the number of the ticket too. But stay… wait! No, I say! Anyway,
the number of our series is there! Anyway, you understand…”
Looking at his wife, Ivan Dmitritch gave a broad, senseless smile, like a baby when
a bright object is shown it. His wife smiled too; it was as pleasant to her as to him
that he only mentioned the series, and did not try to find out the number of the
winning ticket. To torment and tantalize oneself with hopes of possible fortune is so
sweet, so thrilling!
“It is our series,” said Ivan Dmitritch, after a long silence.
“So there is a probability that we have won. It’s only a probability, but there it is!”
“Well, now look!”
“Wait a little. We have plenty of time to be disappointed. It’s on the second line from
the top, so the prize is seventy-five thousand. That’s not money, but power, capital!
And in a minute I shall look at the list, and there –26! Eh? I say, what if we really
won?”
The husband and wife started laughing and staring at one another in silence. The
possibility of winning bewildered them; they could not have said, could not have
dreamed, what they both needed that seventy-five thousand for, what they would
buy, where they would go. They thought only of the figures 9,499 and 75000 and
pictured them in their imagination, while somehow they could not think of the
happiness itself which was so possible.
Ivan Dmitritch, holding the paper in his hand, walked several times from corner to
corner, and only when he had recovered from the first impression began dreaming a
little.
27/84
“And if we have won,” he said—“why, it will be a new life, it will be a
transformation! The ticket is yours, but if it were mine I should, first of all, of course,
spend twenty-five thousand on real property in the shape of the estate; ten thousand
on immediate expenses, new furnishing….Travelling… paying debts, and so on…
the other forty thousand I would put in the bank and get interest on it.”
“Yes, an estate, that would be nice,” said his wife, sitting down and dropping her
hands in her lap.
“Somewhere in the Tula or Oryol provinces.. In the first we shouldn’t need a
summer villa, and besides, it would always bring in an income.”
And pictures came crowding in his imagination, each other gracious and potential
than the last. And in all these pictures he saw himself well-fed, serene, healthy, felt
warm, even hot! Here, after eating a summer soup, cold as ice, he lay on his back on
the burning sand close to a stream or in the garden under the lime-tree… it is hot…
his little boy and girl are crawling near about him, digging in the sand or catching
ladybirds in the grass. He dozes sweetly, thinking of nothing, and feeling all over
that he need not to go to the office today, tomorrow, or the day after. Or, tired of
lying still, he goes to the hay field, or to the forest for the mushrooms, or watches
the peasants catching fish with a net. When the sun sets he takes the towel and soap
and saunters to the bathing-shed, where he undresses at his leisure, slowly rubs his
bare chest with his hands, and goes into the water. And, in the water, near the opaque
soapy circles, little fish flit to and fro and green water-weeds nod their heads. After
bathing there is tea with cream and milk rolls…. In the evening a walk or vint with
the neighbor’s.

The Nightingale and the Rose
Tutorial Link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afM5wIOc3M4&feature=youtu.be
Read the short story and answer the questions that follow. Refer to the text
to check the answers.
“She said that would dance with me if I brought her red roses,” cried the young
Student; “but in all my garden there is no red rose.”
From her nest in the holm-oak tree the Nightingale heard him, and she looked out
through the leaves, and wondered.
“No red rose in all my garden!” he cried, and his beautiful eyes filled with tears.
“Ah, on what little things does happiness depend? I have read all that wise men have
written, and all the secrets of philosophy are mine, yet for want for a red rose is my
life made wretched.”
“Here at last is a true lover,” said the nightingale.
“Night after night have I sung of him, though I knew him not: night after night have
I told his story to the stars, and now I see him. His hair is dark as the hyacinth-
blossom, and his lips are red as the rose of his desire; but passion has made his face
like pale ivory, and sorrow has set her seal upon his brow.”
“The prince gives the balls tomorrow night.” Murmured the young student, “and
love will be of the company. If I bring her a red rose, I shall hold her in my arms,
and she will lean her head upon my shoulder, and her hand will be clasped in mine.
But there is no red rose in my garden, so I shall sit lonely, and she will pass by me.
She will have no heed of me, and my heart will break.”
“Here indeed is the true lover,” said the nightingale.
“What I sing off, he suffers—what a joy to me, to him is pain. Surely love is a
wonderful thing. It is more precious than emeralds, and dearer than fine opals. Pearls
and pomegranates cannot buy it, nor is it set forth in the marketplace. It is not be
purchased of the merchants, nor can it be weighted out in the balance of gold.”
32/84
“The musicians will sit in their gallery,” said the young student, “and play upon their
stringed instruments, and my love will dance to the sound of the harp and the violin.
She will dance so lightly that her feet will not touch the floor, and the courtiers in
their festive dresses will throng round her. But with me she will not dance, for I
have no red rose to give her”; and he flung himself down on the grass, and buried
his face in his hands, and wept.
“Why is he weeping?” asked a little green lizard, as he ran past him with his tail in
the air.
“Why, indeed?” said a butterfly, who was fluttering about after a sunbeam.
“Why, indeed?” whispered a Daisy to his neighbor, in a soft, low voice.
“He is weeping for the red rose,” said the nightingale.
“For a red rose?” they cried; “how very ridiculous!” and the little lizard, who was
something of a cynic, laughed outright.
But the nightingale understood the secret of the student’s sorrow, and she sat silent
in the oak-tree, and thought about the mystery of love.
Suddenly she spread her brown wings for flight, and soared into the air. She passed
through the grove like a shadow, and like a shadow she sailed across the garden.
In the center of the grass-plot was standing a beautiful rose-tree, and when she saw
it she flew over to it, and lit upon a spray.
“Give me red rose,” she cried, “and I will sing a sweetest song for you.”
But the tree shook its head.
“My roses are white,” it answered; “as white as the foam of the sea, and whiter than
the snow upon the mountain. But go to my brother who grows round the old sun-
dial, and perhaps he will give you what you want.”
So the nightingale flew over to the red-rose that was growing round the old sun-dial.
“Give me red rose,” she cried, “and I will sing a sweetest song for you.”
But the tree shook its head.
33/84
“My roses are yellow,” it answered; “as yellow as the hair of the mermaiden who
sits upon an amber throne, and yellower than the daffodil that blooms in the meadow
before the mower comes with his scythe. But go to my brother who grows beneath
the Student’s window, and perhaps he will give you what you want.”
So the nightingale flew over to the red-rose tree who growing beneath the student’s
window.

Unit 2.6: Enzymes
1. Read the following passage and answer the questions.
Enzymes are macromolecules in plant and animal cells that speed up chemical
reactions. Enzymes can build up and breakdown other molecules. The molecules
they act on are substrates. Enzymes are biological catalysts, chemicals that speed up
a chemical reaction without being used up. Most enzymes are huge protein
molecules which are highly specific, each usually work with one type of substance.
The substances at the start of the reaction are called substrates. The substances at the
end of the reaction are called products. Enzymes work on the substrate, and turn
them into products. The environment around the enzyme and the substrate can affect
the speed of the reaction (for example the temperature). In some cases the
environment can cause the enzyme to change its shape and stop working, when this
happens we say that the enzyme is “denatured”.
(1) True and False
S.N Statements True/False
1 Enzymes are macromolecules.
2 Enzymes slow down chemical reactions.
3 Enzymes can only break down molecules.
4 A catalyst is chemical reaction that speeds up reactions without being
used up.
5 Enzymes are mostly carbohydrates.
6 One type of enzymes can only work with one type of substrate.
7 The environment can affect the speed of the reaction.
8 The word “denatured” means without oxygen.

1. Use the information you learned about blood vessels to choose the best answer.
1: Which of the major blood vessels carries blood back into the heart?
• Veins
• Capillaries
• Arteries
52/84
2: Why do arteries have thick, muscular walls containing elastic fibers?
• To prevent oxygen from being lost from the blood
• To prevent the backflow of blood
• To help them carry blood at low pressure
• To allow the transport of substances to other cells
• To help them carry blood at high pressure
3: Which of the following correctly compares veins and arteries?
• Both arteries and veins have thick muscular walls to carry blood at high pressure.
• Both arteries and veins contain valves to prevent the backflow of blood.
• Veins have a muscular wall to carry blood at high pressure, and arteries have valves to prevent
the backflow of blood.
• Arteries have a muscular wall to carry blood at high pressure, and veins have valves to prevent
the backflow of blood.
4: Why is it important for capillaries to have thin, permeable walls?
• To allow them to carry blood at a high pressure
• To increase the rate of blood flow
• To allow substances to diffuse into and out of cells
• To prevent the backflow of blood in the vessels
• To provide capillaries with the flexibility to move around cells
5: What happens to the blood when it is taken to the lungs?
• It becomes oxygenated.
• It becomes deoxygenated.
• It absorbs glucose.
• It releases glucose.
6: Why do veins often contain valves?
• To keep blood moving against the concentration gradient
• To keep blood moving at a high pressure
• To ensure that blood is able to clot properly
• To prevent the backflow of blood
• To prevent blood from becoming deoxygenated
7: Which of the major blood vessels carry blood from the heart to the lungs or the body?
• Veins
• Capillaries
• Arteries
53/84
8: What type of blood vessels surround and deliver blood to body cells, tissues, and alveoli?
• Arteries
• Capillaries
• Veins
9: Complete the table to correctly compare the structure of the three major blood vessels.
Structure Vein Artery Capillary
Width of Wall Thin 1 Single layer of cells
Size of Lumen 2 Small Very small
Valves Present 3 No 4
• 1: Thick, 2: Small, 3: No, 4: No
• 1: Thin, 2: Small, 3: Yes, 4: No
• 1: Thick, 2: Large, 3: Yes, 4: No
• 1: Thick, 2: Large, 3: No, 4: Yes
• 1: Thin, 2: Large, 3: Yes, 4: Yes
