In 2011 we celebrated some major anniversaries. Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler invented the automobile 125 years ago. The first Mercedes-Benz regular-service bus began operating between Siegen and Netphen in 1895. Exactly 100 years ago Karl Kässbohrer built his first bus. And 60 years ago the first bus with a self-supporting body was built, marking the birth of the Setra brand.

This is a tradition that must be lived up to. That’s why we have intro-duced the new Mercedes-Benz Citaro in Western Europe, our core market. The Citaro is a top-quality product that sets new standards in terms of economical operation, safety, comfort, and design.

This new city bus will help Daimler Buses to consolidate its leading position on the market. Last year, customers opted to buy about 40,000 Mercedes-Benz, Setra, and Orion brand buses. We have clearly demonstrated that we are by far the leader in our core markets.

The basis of this success is our sustainability-oriented strategy and our comprehensive range of products for all of the world’s markets. In this way, we are making a contribution to safe, effective, comfortable, and environmentally friendly public transportation and thus raising people’s quality of life.

We are systematically developing and designing sustainable solutions for public transportation, which is expected to double in size world-wide by 2025. We aim to take part in this growth. As we do so, our focus will be on complying with future guidelines for emissions, offering products with alternative drive systems, and providing holistic services and transportation solutions for large cities and growth markets.

Shaping Future TransportationDaimler Trucks and Daimler Buses are forging ahead with measures for significantly reducing the fuel consumption and CO2 and pollutant emissions of their vehicles. The world’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturer is consolidating these activities in its worldwide “Shaping Future Transportation” initiative. The initiative actively incorporates the brands Mercedes-Benz, Setra, Freightliner, Fuso, Orion, and Thomas Built Buses. Daimler’s development path extends from clean conventional fuels, such as gasoline and diesel, to natural gas and hybrid drives to hydrogen for vehicles with fuel cell drives. More than 610,000 Daimler commercial vehicles with SCR techno-logy are currently on the road around the world. At the Busworld 2011 vehicle show in Kortrijk, Belgium, Daimler presented the world’s first travel coach to comply with the Euro VI emissions standard: the Mercedes-Benz Travego Edition 1. The Euro VI standard will become obligatory in early 2014. Daimler is the global leader for “green” com-mercial vehicles: By the end of last year, the company had already delivered 22,000 vehicles that use alternative drive concepts to customers. Hybrid technology plays a key role in these vehicles, as it reduces diesel consumption by up to one third, depending on the application. The hybrid portfolio of Daimler Trucks and Daimler Buses is unmatched anywhere in the world, ranging from Fuso and Freight-liner brand vehicles and Orion hybrid buses to hybrid commercial vehicles bearing the Mercedes star.

Further expansion of activities In late 2011, Daimler Buses delivered a total of 47 Mercedes-Benz Citaro G BlueTec Hybrid articulated buses, which are used in regular service operations in places like Hamburg, Krefeld, Mülheim/Ruhr, Stuttgart, Rotterdam, and Milan. The Citaro G BlueTec Hybrid is the only hybrid bus to date that can cover extended stretches while running solely on electricity, without using the diesel engine.

The extremely economical Mercedes-Benz Citaro FuelCELL Hybrid generates zero local emissions, putting it at the forefront of sus-tainable mobility. Hamburger Hochbahn AG (HH) has acquired four Mercedes-Benz Citaro FuelCELL Hybrids for Germany’s NaBuZ demo project (German abbreviation for “Sustainable Bus System of the Future — Demonstration”). The new Citaro FuelCELL Hybrid has many new features not found in the fuel cell buses that were tested in Hamburg beginning in 2003. Among them is a hybrid system with energy recovery and storage in lithium-ion batteries, high-perfor-mance electric motors with 120 kW of constant power output in the wheel hubs, electric ancillary components, and enhanced fuel cells. These features are meant to increase service life to at least six years or 12,000 hours of operation. Thanks to improved fuel cell compo-nents and hybridization with lithium-ion batteries, the new Citaro FuelCELL Hybrid uses almost 50 percent less hydrogen than the predecessor generation. Three more of these vehicles will be added to the HH fleet this year.

Daimler Buses has already sold more than 3,200 Orion VII hybrid buses in North America; the vehicles are in use by customers in cities such as New York, Seattle, and Toronto. Daimler Buses has thus sold more hybrid buses than any other manufacturer in the world.

In September 2011, the innovative Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system received the University of Duisburg-Essen’s ÖkoGlobe award in the New Mobility Concepts category. With BRT, buses operate in sepa-rate dedicated lanes, ensuring fast and efficient transport of large numbers of passengers. In this way, BRT can inexpensively make optimum use of the available road network while substantially reducing the emissions produced per passenger and kilometer.

Daimler also sets the pace when it comes to passive safety. In 2007, for example, the company achieved a milestone in passive safety for buses with the introduction of Front Collision Guard (FCG). This system, which stands for maximum protection for drivers and passengers of travel coaches, also offers protection to occupants of other vehicles by preventing them from being forced under an FCG-equipped bus in the event of a collision. The essential elements of FCG are an integrated absorber structure and a front module which upon impact moves the entire driver’s area — including the seat, steering wheel, and pedals — toward the rear by as much as 20 centimeters. This offers an unprecedented level of safety for the driver and the front-seat passenger, while also demonstrating that buses are the safest means of passenger transport.

Buses from Mercedes-Benz and Setra are the absolute leaders inactive and passive safety worldwide. Various independent studieshave found that vehicles equipped with active safety systems are less likely to be involved in accidents than those without such systems. When combined with standard-fitted safety systems, such additional measures can both actively and passively prevent acci-dents leading to damage and personal injury. Another preventative component are safety training programs for bus drivers.

Pioneer in active and passive safety For more than 50 years, developments from Daimler have been leading the way in the field of vehicle safety. These developments can be divided into active and passive safety elements. One example of an active safety system is the multiple award-winning Active Brake Assist (ABA), whose introduction in 2006 expanded the range of highly efficient assistance systems for active accident prevention. The system goes into action whenever there is imminent danger of a collision with a slower-moving vehicle ahead and the driver fails to react to this situation. After issuing several phased warnings, the assistant automatically engages an emergency braking maneuver, thereby actively working to prevent rear-end collisions and helping to save lives. Currently unparalleled in the industry, ABA has been available in Mercedes-Benz trucks since 2006 and in Mercedes-Benz and Setra brand travel coaches since 2008. Since April 2012 the new generation of Active Brake Assist 2 is available that also can detect stationary obstacles.

Along with other active assistance systems such as the Electronic Stability Program (ESP), the Lane Assistant (SPA), the Continuous Braking Limiter (DBL), Brake Assist (BA), and the ART proximity cruise control system, “Active Brake Assist” underscores Daimler’s technology leadership in the field of active safety.

Citaro articulated buses for Geneva. Transports Publics Genevois (TPG) updates its fleet with 87 Mercedes-Benz articulated buses.

» August 2011 Fuel cell hybrid buses for Hamburg. The Hamburger Hochbahn public transport company orders its first four Mercedes-Benz Citaro FuellCELL Hybrid buses as part of the Sustainable Bus System of the Future (NaBuZ) project.

» September 2011 Private company debut. A private bus company from Germany is the first customer buying the new generation Citaro.

» October 2011 Setra for the 2012 European Cup. The orga-nizers of the 2012 European Cup, which will be held in Poland and Ukraine from June 8 to July 1, will rely on Setra brand vehicles. A total of 25 travel coaches from Ulm will be used to transport the 16 teams, as well as their coaches, officials, and guests.

Premieres of Daimler Buses models in Kortrijk. At Busworld in Kortrijk, Belgium, Daimler Buses presents its current range of travel coaches and regular-service buses, including many new products. The new Mer-cedes-Benz Travego celebrates its world premiere at the event. This vehicle is the world’s first travel coach to meet the Euro VI emissions standard. Another highlight at the show is the new Citaro urban bus, which is equip-ped with the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) for the first time.

» February 2011 American-style Setra. At the Motorcoach UMA Expo in Tampa, Florida, the Setra brand presents the Setra Com-fortClass S 407 travel coach in a new look, featuring an American design idiom.

» March 2011 Gas buses for Norway. Tide ASA, one of Nor-way’s largest transport opera-tors, orders 37 Mercedes-Benz Citaro articulated buses. The 18-meter vehicles are equipped with EEV-compliant M 447 hLAG natural gas engines, which produce far fewer emis-sions than are permitted by the currently valid Euro 5 standard.

Bus chassis with ESP. The Mercedes-Benz OC 500 bus chassis is greatly in demand worldwide as a basis for custo-mized bodies for two-axle travel coaches. Starting in April 2011, the chassis offers Daimler’s proprietary Electronic Stability Program (ESP) as standard equipment in order to enhance safety. » April 2011 300 Citaros for Singapore. In April 2011 the Southeast Asian city-state of Singapore places a major order for 300 Mercedes-Benz Citaro

low-floor city buses from the Mannheim plant. The vehicles are equipped with Mercedes-Benz Bluetec diesel technology, which meets the Euro 5 emis-sions limit.

» May 2011 Three major mile-stones in Ulm. The Daimler premium brand Setra from Ulm celebrates three milestones in May 2011: the 60th anniver-sary of Setra, the sale of its 100,000th bus, and the cente-nary of bus production in Ulm, where the first public bus (a Kässbohrer vehicle mounted on a Saurer chassis) went into operation in 1911.

World premiere in Mannheim.The all-new Mercedes-Benz Citaro is unveiled to the public at the Mannheim plant. The most suc-cessful regular-service bus of all time sets standards in terms of economy, design, comfort, and safety, featuring ESP and front impact protection.

» July 2011 Strong position in France. The Setra bus plant in Ligny-en-Barrois, France, celebrates its 30th anniversary. The facility’s 430 employees manufacture regular-service buses and travel coaches from the Mercedes-Benz brand.

Highlights 2011/2012. Setra named Green Coach 2011. The German trade maga-zines “Omnibusrevue” and “Busfahrer” present the Setra S 415 GT-HD with the Green Coach Award in recognition of its extremely high fuel efficiency compared to six other two-axle travel coaches made by other manufacturers.

» December 2011 Top-of-the-line Sprinter City 77. The first Mercedes-Benz Sprinter City 77 is delivered to a customer in the Rhine-Main region. This vehicle is the top-of-the-line city bus model from EvoBus GmbH’s minibus range.

» February 2012 Tourismo: The name says it all. After the legendary Mercedes-Benz O303, the Mercedes-Benz Tourismo (O350 series) is now the brand’s best-selling travel coach. The vehicle’s second generation, which was introduced five years ago, also builds on this success and the series’ 5,000th unit is delivered.

Articulated buses for Istanbul.The Istanbul public transport company IETT orders a total of 221 Mercedes-Benz Conecto articulated buses from Mer-cedes-Benz Türk. The 18-meter low-floor buses are manufac-tured at the Mercedes-Benz bus plant in Hoşdere near Istanbul. The final units will be delivered in September 2012.

» March 2012 Start of “GLOBE 2013“. The growth and efficiency offensive “GLOBE 2013“ aims to strengthen the Daimler Buses’ lea- ding position in the bus business.
