Monday evening of every month at 7:30PM in the

Madonna Room to recite the Rosary together (in

English & Italian) and to discuss and plan spiritual and

social church events as well as fund-raising

efforts. There is often a guest speaker and at the end of

the meeting we enjoy each other’s company over coffee

breakfast when available. Please contact us at

special guest, Father Larry! Father Larry is a Passionist

priest who has visited St Rocco’s for many years and he

will be sharing his experience on his recent pilgrimage

to Fatima. The meeting will begin at 7:00pm with the

communal praying of the Rosary (we provide rosaries

and the prayers in English and Italian) and Father Larry

will begin around 7:30pm. Current Rosarians, women

thinking about joining the society, and all others simply

interested in hearing Father Larry’s story are more than

welcome! Coffee and cake will follow. Meet us in the

Madonna Room of the parish center.

7:30pm Tue 9/26: Tuesday Bible Study: Last week,

Father Elias illuminated the genealogy of Jesus

Christ given at the start of Matthew's Gospel. What

was once a long list of names became to us a tapestry of

stories, places, and persons with their triumphs and

faults woven together to form the family Christ chose.

We learned that this account presents an historical

progression, not a strict record, with certain men and

women included for specific reasons - to affirm Jesus's

role as messiah and draw connections with the Old

Testament, establishing Christ's place in our story of

salvation. We also discovered the harmony between

the seemingly contradictory genealogy accounts in

Matthew's and Luke's gospels - if you're interested, visit

jimmyakin.com/the-genealogies-of-Christ-2 to learn

more and for a helpful chart. This Tuesday, we will be

celebrating "Christmas in September" as we read Saint

Matthew's account of the infancy narrative. Meet us in

the second to last classroom of St Rocco's Parish Center.

Next Weekend: Family Breakfast has returned!! Bring

your whole family and join your friends after Mass for a

delicious breakfast prepared by our wonderful Nonnas.

If you’ve been, you don’t need further reason to

return… if you haven’t no words can do it justice!

In the second reading from this Sunday, St. Paul says: “Christ

will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by

death” (Phil 1:20). To those who mistakenly believe that

Catholicism teaches that the body is evil or somehow less

important than the soul, this passage may seem surprising.

However, in this passage Paul succinctly sends home the

message that through physical actions of the body Christ may

be “magnified,” that is, made greater. Of course, Christ does

not need our actions to make Himself greater, as He is already

perfect. Nevertheless He privileges us with the responsibility

to manifest His glory through our works while we are here on

earth. We can give Him glory through our labor, through our

daily physical habits, through taking care of our bodies as

temples of the Holy Spirit. Our physical actions can serve to

direct our hearts toward God; the movement of our bodies can

teach our soul to move toward heaven.

The Church wisely includes physical movement (of both priest

and congregation) in the liturgy, thus drawing attention to the

significance of what occurs on the altar. Sacred music is no

exception to this. Singing the Ordinary (Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus,

Agnus Dei, etc.) and Proper (particular readings and

antiphons assigned to a particular day) of the Mass, and any

hymns which may be included, can help us appreciate the

meaning of the Scriptural texts and prayers of the Holy

Sacrifice.

Even if you are not comfortable singing, you may nonetheless

participate through active listening, perceiving how the chants

and hymns expand upon the Propers, and perhaps find new

meaning in the texts of the Ordinary which we hear every

Sunday. We do not all physically lift the Sacred Host at the

Elevation, but we can observe and spiritually partake in the

powerful moment to which the priest’s action points.

Similarly, we do not need to sing every part of the Mass, but

listening reflectively to the chants and hymns of the Mass can

deepen our participation in the mysteries of the Eucharist.

Welcome Back! This weekend we welcome back our children’s

choir to the 10:15am Mass. The St Rocco Children’s Choir

sings at this Mass on a bimonthly basis with rehearsals every

Tuesday from 4:30-5:30. New members ages 7-14 are welcome

at any time! For more information, contact me at

[email protected]. The Children’s Choir will sing the

following Sundays: Oct 15, Oct 22, Nov 5, Nov 19, Dec 13, and

Dec 24 (Christmas Eve Mass). They will also sing at the 3pm

Lessons and Carols event planned for Sunday, Dec 17th. We

look forward to their lovely voices uplifting us a Mass!

Angels Explained: Based on a Talk by Dr. Mark Miravalle

In the next few weeks, there are a couple feasts which

celebrate angels – the Archangels on Sept 29 and the Holy

Guardian Angels on Oct 2 - so I thought it would be a good

time to share some information from a recent recording I

heard. This week, I’ll introduce angels and their basic

hierarchy and next week I’ll go into detail about the particular

angels whose feasts we will soon celebrate.

Angels are spiritual persons, created without bodies by God at

the beginning of time. Scripture tells us that “for in [God], were

created all things in heaven and on earth, the visible and the

invisible” (Corinthians 1:16). The profession of faith of the

Fourth Lateran Council affirms that God "from the beginning

of time made at once out of nothing both orders of creatures,

the spiritual and the corporeal, that is, the angelic and the

earthly, and then the human creature, who as it were shares in

both orders, being composed of spirit and body." Angels bridge

divinity and humanity and they have two purposes: to glorify

God and to act as his messengers.

What we know about the angels comes from Scripture, papal

statements, and commentaries of the saints. Angels occupy

space, but are not contained or controlled by it. They can take

on the manifestation of a physical form, like appearing as a

person, but only for the sake of the angel’s mission and the

physical form is not part of an angel’s nature (as an example,

see the story of St Raphael in the book of Tobit).

There are three hierarchies of angels. A hierarchy is a sacred

order of beings that participate in divine knowledge and

activity and guide those inferior to their own sacred order.

These hierarchies create an order of harmony and obedience

through which truth and knowledge are passed down. God

created this order of angelic beings, and from it we can learn

much about the nature of God and the workings of the spiritual

realm.

The first hierarchy of angels contemplates God in His infinite

goodness and the proper end of all things. This bespeaks to us

the beauty and importance of Adoration – visiting Christ in the

Eucharist. If the highest angels were created for the only

purpose of adoring and contemplating God, then how

important it is for us to participate in that sublime activity.

From their adoration, the first hierarchy receives illumination,

knowledge, and truth which they pass on to the second

hierarchy. This middle hierarchy governs the material world,

the cosmos. They command how God’s will is to be carried out

by the lower powers and appoint what is to be done. They can

properly do so because of the knowledge passed down to them.

The lowest hierarchy receives “instructions” from the second

hierarchy and carries out God’s will, with a particular attention

on humans. This third hierarchy includes the archangels and

guardian angels which I’ll share more about next week.
