The sudden peak in reported malaria cases in the Vhembe and Soutpansberg region is no reason for widespread panic – but rather for extra vigilance.

This was the message of not only the Limpopo Department of Health (DoH), but also a well-known farmer from the Tshipise area, Mr Howard Knott.

Knott spoke to the Zoutpansberg-er this week. He recently survived cerebral malaria.

Knott had been diagnosed with cerebral malaria on 22 March and had to spend two days in intensive care, receiving treatment. “It was a bumpy ride, and I still feel like I’m weighed down by the flu, even though I’m in the clear,” said Howard on Monday.

According to him, the whole Tshipise area is riddled with malaria. “People need to be aware and take the necessary precautions,” was Howard’s advice. He fi rst thought that he might have a cold and received treatment almost too late.

Pharmacies and doctors in the Musina area also said this week that they had received an increase in the demand for medicine for this feared disease.

When the DoH was phoned for confi rmation, several of their malaria control teams were busy in the fi eld within the Tshipise and surrounding areas to control the outbreak. Departmental spokesperson Adele van der Linde said on Tuesday that their con-trol teams were busy spraying long-term mosquito repellents as well as testing people in the area.

She confi rmed that 911 malaria cases had been reported across Limpopo for the month of January and 957 during March. The exact number of cases

for the Vhembe and Soutpansberg region had yet to be calculated at the time of our going to press.

She explained that the DoH fi rst saw a sharp in-crease in malaria cases in the eastern parts of Mopani, before this trend shifted towards the Vhembe region during the fi rst two weeks of April.

“But people should remember that the Limpopo province is a malaria-endemic province and that they should always be alert,” said Van der Linde.

This sudden, in fact out-of-season, increase can be attributed to the unexpected high rainfall in the region.

More rain means more mosquitoes, which are the carriers of the malaria parasite.

New service or business in town?The newly opened Asante House of Glamour beauty salon in Makhado (Lou-is Trichardt) will provide clients from the whole of the Vhembe region with an assortment of professional beauty treatments.

The salon, which aims to be a one-stop solution for clients, is temporarily situated in shop number 3, in the Sakkie Stry-dom shopping complex in Ris-sik Street, across from Werda Toyota. Managed by Thabelo Mulaudzi, the salon operates week days from 07:00 until 17:30. On Saturdays, the salon will be open from 08:30 until

A routine police inspection led to the arrest of two Zimbab-wean men in Musina last Thursday.

According to provincial police spokesperson Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, the men were found in possession of explosives. The 33-year-old Victor Chaikambu re

and 34-year-old Nicholas Mh-langa appeared in the Messina Magistrate’s Court the following day and were charged with the illegal possession of explosives.

“Upon searching the vehicle, police found eight capped fuse detonators and eight blasting cartridges stashed behind the

driver’s seat,” said Mulaudzi. Chikambure was driving at the time and allegedly claimed own-ership of the explosives.

Both men will remain in cus-tody until their next court ap-pearance this Thursday (17th), when they are expected to bring a formal bail application.

Outbreak no reason to panic, but be vigilant

the DoH already has yearly intervention measures in place. During peak malaria seasons, the DoH sends control teams to treat residential areas as part of their indoor residual spraying (IRS) programme. Even so, malaria deaths still occur, despite the fact that it is a curable disease. How-ard echoed the advice of several local doctors who were approached by the newspaper this week: “Don’t play around – if you suspect that you might have malaria, seek medical care immediately!”

“I’m happy with our government’s malaria pro grammes, but one simply does not know what happens across our borders,” said Makhado (Louis Trichardt) pharmacist Mr Louis van den Heever.

Van der Linde’s advice for residents was to seek medical care from a primary medical facility or DoH clinic. Malaria is a disease that quickly deteriorates into severe or complicated malaria if not treated within the fi rst two or three days of

its onset. Travellers and tourists who visited a high-risk area and who present flu-like symp-toms should seek imme-diate medical attention.

With World Malaria Day observed on Friday, 25 April, the Limpopo DoH will celebrate the fact that malaria inci-dence was lowered to between 1 384 and 4 735

cases since 2007, with between 20 and 49 deaths reported per season during this period. According to Van der Linde, the smallest number of malaria cas-es the past 15 years were reported during 2012/13.

Don’t take chances with this diseaseWith the recent spate of the acute febrile (feverish) malaria in the Vhembe region, these are a few warning symptoms to watch out for:

• In a non-immune individual, symptoms will appear between 10 to 15 days after an infective mosquito bite.

• The fi rst symptoms – fever, headache, chills, tiredness, cycles of sweat and vomiting – may be mild and diffi cult to recognize as malaria and could be mistaken for a cold or fl u.

• If not treated within 24 hours, P. falciparum malaria can progress to severe illness, often leading to death. A high swing in fever may develop at this

stage, marked by shivering and dramatic perspiration.• Children with severe malaria frequently develop

one or more of the following symptoms: severe anaemia, respiratory distress in relation to metabolic acidosis, or cerebral malaria.

• In adults, multi-organ involvement is also frequent.• Cerebral malaria is extremely serious, with the

victim becoming delirious or entering a coma.• In malaria-endemic areas, persons may develop

Even before the upcoming Easter weekend, local roads have already claimed the life of one motorist, while others narrowly escaped death and serious injury.

On Saturday afternoon, 12 April, a truck driver escaped death when he lost control over his heavy vehicle while coming down the Soutpansberg mountain pass. Apparently the vehicle’s brakes failed, causing the truck to accelerate and speed out of control past the Stubbs Street traffic circle on the N1 in Makhado (Louis Trichardt). The accident happened at approximately 14:00.

Witnesses of the accident recollect seeing anoth-er motorist, driving a Volkswagen Polo, waiting to cross the intersection. The driver of the Polo dodged the oncoming truck by a hair’s breadth. “We thought the person in the Polo was done for – he must have sped up very quickly when he saw the truck hurtling towards him,” recall Bonita Furstenburg, Dallien Viljoen and Luandi Smit, who witnessed the incident.

The truck driver did, however, manage not to hit the Polo, bringing the truck to a skidding halt several hundred metres from the traffic circle and sending its load of beans scattering over the N1. According to reports from local rescue workers, it took a clean-up crew several hours to clear the road again for traffic.

On Sunday, an unknown male was killed in a vehicle accident along the Waterpoort road, several kilometres from the Waterpoort/N1 intersection. More details about the accident were still forth-coming at the time of going to press.

Shortly before this accident, another truck, also travelling from Musina towards Makhado (Louis Trichardt), jack-knifed at the Waterpoort crossing. Fortunately, no one was injured and no other vehi-cles were involved.

andere in die gebruik van ‘n alarm-stelsel, ‘n sekuriteitskamera en ‘n nagwag. Die polisie is juis deur die afgaan van die alarm by die pomp-stasie attent gemaak daarop dat ‘n diefstal moontlik aan die gang was. Zikhale is gearresteer nadat hy binne-in die pomphuisie gevind is. Daar word vermoed dat daar nog verdagtes was wat gevlug het met die polisie se aankoms op die toneel.

Zikhale, wat van Zimbabwe afkom-stig is, is sedert sy arrestasie in po li sie-aanhouding, nadat hy borg geweier is. Hy sou in aanhouding bly tot sy volgende verskyning op 16 April wanneer hy na verwagting ‘n pleitooreenkoms met die Staat sou aangaan.

‘n Sekuriteitswag van ‘n plaaslike sekuriteits-firma, die 28-jarige Elvis Mashamba Rendani, het die polisie se hulp ontbied nadat sy bestuurder glo ‘n vuurwapen op hom gerig het. Nortjé is verlede Vrydag gearresteer, nadat hy en Rendani glo ‘n woordewisseling gehad het oor Rendani se lone. Die uitbarsting het in Industria-straat, naby Desai Cash & Carry, plaasgevind. Volgens wat die koerant kon vasstel, het die twee mans baklei omdat Rendani ‘n eis ingedien het by

die hof vir klein eise oor sy lone wat nie betaal is nie. Tydens die bakleiery moes Rendani na bewe ring op die vlug slaan, nadat Nortjé hom na bewering gedreig het met sy vuurwapen.

Tydens die woordewisseling het dinge glo so erg geraak dat Nortjé vir Rendani in die straat afgejaag het – steeds met sy vuurwapen in die hand. Rendani het die hulp van die polisie ontbied, nadat hy op die vlug geslaan en gaan wegkruip het. Nortjé sou glo wéér vir Rendani aan die nek gegryp het terwyl die polisie op die toneel was om die saak te ondersoek.

Nortjé is gearresteer en gewaarsku om Maandag (14de) in die Louis Trichardt Distrikshof te verskyn. Hy het wel vlugtig op ‘n klag van die nalatige rig van ‘n vuurwapen en nog ‘n klag van aanranding verskyn. Sy saak is uitgestel tot 5 Mei vir verdere ondersoek.

Geskil oor lone eindigin saak in Distrikshof

Thursday, 17 April will see South Africa sign a memoran-dum of understanding (MoU) with Mozambique, which will assist in the curbing of rhino poaching.

Minister of Water and En-vironmental Affairs Ms Edna Molewa will meet with the Mozambican Minister of Tour-ism, Carvalho Muária, at the Skukuza camp of the Kruger National Park (KNP) to sign the MoU in the field of Biodiversity, Conservation and Management.

Such an agreement is crucial, said the minister in a press

release last Wednesday, if the scourge of rhino poaching with-in the Great Limpopo Trans-frontier Park (GLTP) is taken into consideration. “Escalating incidences of poaching have become a major challenge with-in the GLTP,” said minister Molewa.

SANParks welcomed the signing of the agreement, which will allow KNP rangers to pur-sue poachers even if they cross the border. “The agreement will [also] ensure that measures which we are putting on this side of the fence in South Africa

are also put in Mozambique,” said SANParks spokesperson Rey Thakhuli. In addition, the agreement will also assist in addressing other wildlife crimes. This will include illegal hunters who cross the border to hunt for meat or protected animals that they harvest for muti purposes.

As of 9 April, on the day minister Molewa announced the signing of the MoU, the total number of rhino poached since the beginning of the year reached 277. Of this, 166 rhinos were killed within the KNP and 34 across the Limpopo province.

Die ewigdurende stryd wat die burgerregte organisasie AfriForum met die Vhembe en Makhado Munisipaliteit het rakende watervoorsiening in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) is vinnig besig om einde se kant toe te staan.

AfriForum se voorsitter vir Makhado (Louis Trichardt), mnr. Wally Schultz, het verlede week Woensdag (9de) met vreu-gde aangekondig dat beide die Mowkop en Bergstraat reservoirs 100% vol was. Teen Maandag was beide reservoirs tussen 80% en ‘n 100% vol. Schultz het bygevoeg dat daar egter nog wa-

terregulering sal plaasvind tot tyd en wyl verskeie boorgate regoor die dorp weer herstel, toegerus en geëlektrifiseer word. “Sekere areas sal sien dat hulle water gedurende die aande afgeskakel word,” het Schultz gesê. Dít word gedoen sodat ander areas van die dorp, soos die Khutama Sintumule gevangenis, ook van water voorsien kan word.

Intussen is die Vhembe Di s-triks munisipaliteit besig om drie nuwe boorgate te boor wat ook water sal voorsien as aanvulling tot water van die Albasinidam af. Beide munisipaliteite, sê Schultz, is ook besig om saam te werk om

te verseker dat al die pompstasies wat water verskaf aan die dorp en die omliggende omgewing beskerm word teen mense met lang vingers.

Schultz het die hoop uitge-spreek dat van hierdie water-stasie-pompe teen die einde van April ten volle herstel en diefbestand sal wees.

Intussen het die woordvoerder vir die Vhembe munisipaliteit, mnr. Ralushai Matodzi, gevra dat indien daar areas is wat nog nie water het nie, hulle dit moet aanmeld by die munisipaliteit. Die munisipaliteit kan geskakel word by 015 960 2000.

It was with great anticipation that the Grade R learners of Messina Primary School came to school on the morning of 15 April. These little ones paid a visit to the Obed Mashaba Fire Department, where they were met with great excitement by a team of firefighters and other emergency staff. A new and different, more positive approach to the pruning of trees under electricity lines in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) can be expected now and in future.

Makhado’s municipal manager, Mr Isaac Mutshinyali, reacted swiftly to a public outcry at the beginning of the bush-clearing operation which got underway towards the end of last week in Munnik and Anderson Street in town.

Teams acting on behalf of the municipality’s electricity department attacked all trees in the immediate proximity of the town’s electricity lines along the streets, indiscriminate-ly ripping off branches and stripping branches and trunks, leaving a gro-

tesque, spooky lane of splintered and torn-away tree trunks.

Members of the public expressed outrage in telephone calls to the Zoutpansberger about the obviously unprofessional treatment of the trees.

Mr Mutshinyali was informed of this. His attention was drawn to the fact that the bush-clearing operation in town was degenerating into an unacceptable, massive maiming and destruction of the town’s trees. Even trees which were originally planted by the municipality on the pavements were simply cut off and destroyed.

Mr Mutshinyali received the news with equal concern and immediately took positive action. He reacted by expressing his appreciation for the

What started as bush clearing degenerated into massive maiming and destruction of trees in Anderson and Munnik Street in Makhado (Louis Trichrdt) last week. By public request the municipal manager intervened when the situation was brought to his attention.

The municipality published a notice last week that the electricity supply will be interrupted from 1 April to 31 October this year on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 08:00 to 16:00, in pre-notified street blocks to enable municipal employees to do bush clearing of the overhead low-voltage power lines in town. It states that all high-risk vegetation up to three metres from the centre of the power line will be removed and that the clearing of the vegetation is aimed at improving the quality of the supply and services, as well as to maintain street lighting to promote the general security of residents.

The club’s stargazing evenings are open to the general public and everyone is welcome.

The waning moon rises at 21:30, giving a couple of hours of dark skies. Three of the fi ve naked-eye planets will be visible. • SOUTPANSBERG KUNSFEES Die jaarlikse Soutpansberg Kunsfees vind vanaf 19 tot 22 Mei by Laerskool Louis Trichardt plaas en inskrywingsvorms is reeds by die skool beskikbaar.

Hierdie kunsfees bied aan laer- en hoër-skoolleerlinge die geleentheid om op die verhoog op te tree met drama, sang, musiek en dans. Buiten die optredes is daar ook die uitstallings van verskillende kunsvorme wat baie inskry-wings lok. Die koste is R20 per inskrywing. Following their successful selling of vetkoek-and-mince and French Fries before and during the Cansa Relay for Life on Friday, 28 March, Harcourts of Makhado (Louis Trichardt) donated a portion of the raised funds to BergCare. BergCare is a local non-profit organisation that takes care of, among other things, the less-privileged as well as the elderly people of the town. award-winning chef Eric de Jonge, who saw an opportunity to use his skills and experience to help and teach young people more about preparing and cooking healthy meals.

In 2013, the Ackerman’s Pick ‘n Pay Founda-tion kindly agreed to sponsor a group of 20 young women who were selected from neighbouring rural villages. The trainees had no former cooking experience or training. Eric ran the clinic in the Village Hall in Haenertsburg, where the students were taught basic skills such as food preparation, hygiene, table setting and presentation. The aim was to provide them with enough basic skills, so they will be able to find employment in the hos-pitality industry.

As a result of the clinic, three teams participated in the cooking competition during the Kiwifruit Festival in April 2013. Two of the trainees qualified for a bursary worth R69 000 each and were enrolled in the National Youth Development Chef Training Programme. Quite a few of the trainees have been offered jobs at a catering company and have found employment in the local hospitality trade.

The Pick ‘n Pay Foundation very kindly agreed to another sponsorship for the cooking clinic and 12 young students were selected to participate and be trained. At the same time, a trainee trainer will be trained to ensure sustainability and to continuation of the training process in the area. Social develop-ment has always been a big part of Haenertsburg, and this clinic has certainly had a huge impact on the young people in the surrounding rural areas in helping to alleviate poverty and unemployment.

The trainees, upon completion of their course, will again have the opportunity to seek employment and they will also be assisting some of the profes-sional chefs during the Kiwifruit Festival Cooking Competition on 3 and 4 May in Haenertsburg. With the popular PPC Kremetart Stage Cycle Race around the corner on the weekend of 7 June, PPC as main sponsor, together with some seasoned cyclists of the race, put together some tips to keep in mind when preparing.

As always, training is key. “You will need hours in the saddle. Endurance is very important and you need to learn to handle stage racing. Make sure that your bike is race-ready. Have it serviced at least three weeks before the race and take it for a decent ride to make sure all the problems are fixed. There will be support on the route, but it can cost you time,” says PPC.

Cyclist are encouraged to get enough sleep two nights before the race. On the day of the race, cyclists must make sure they wear enough warm clothing for the first stage of the race, such as long-sleeved shirts and leggings. “Eat enough during the race and between the different stages. Your body needs energy in order to keep up with the pace of the race. The organisers make sure that the best nu-tritional food is served to participants,” says PPC.

A simple way to avoid cramping, says PPC, is simply to put a bit of baking soda in your water bottle and drink it at the end of each stage. “During the race, try to stay in a group. The wind can be notoriously difficult on the route,” says PPC.

Lastly, PPC says, decent bibs with good-quality chamois or a change of gear between the stages can help a lot.

Die Soutpansberg Skietklub het Saterdag, 12 April, ‘n suksesvolle jaggeweer-skietkompetisie aangebied.

‘n Mooi opkoms van junior sowel as senior deelnemers het enige kwade gevoelens teenoor die reën gou agtergelaat.

Die senior Skut van die Dag was Ampie du Toit, wat ‘n rooibok wen. Tiaan Futcher wen ook ‘n rooibok as senior/junior Skut van die Dag, terwyl Wiaan du Toit R300 wen as die junior Skut van die Dag.

Ander deelnemers wat medaljes gewen het, was Wiaan du Toit, wat die junior-afdeling gewen het, met Justin Breytenbach tweede en Bianca Barnard derde.

In die senior/junior-afdeling vir .22-gewere skiet Simone du Toit ‘n eersteplek los, met Monique

Rademeyer tweede en Tiny Rademeyer derde. In die jaggweer-afdeling vir dieselfde ouderdomskate-gorie was Tiaan Futcher eerste, Bernard Futcher tweede, en Tiny Rademeyer derde.

Wilhelm Smit wen die senior jaggeweer-afde ling, met Ronnie Levine en Ampie du Toit onderskeidelik in die tweede en derde plekke. In die handwapenkategorie was dit Jadranko Jakovlev eerste, gevolg deur Ronnie Levine en Jannie van Zyl. Armand Schoeman wen die seniors .22-geweer-afdeling, met Ernest Breytenbach in die tweede plek en Ampie du Toit derde.

Na afloop van die skietdag het die klub hul har-tlike dank uitgespreek teenoor Ernest Breytenbach en Schalk van der Walt, wat elkeen ‘n rooibok geskenk het. “Dankie aan almal wat gehelp en kom saam skiet het,” het die klub gesê.

Die Weg, die Waarheid en die Lewe

Sagaria 6:12: “... en sê vir hom dit: So spreek die Here van die leërskare: Kyk, daar kom ‘n Man wie se Naam is Spruit, en Hy sal uit Sy plek uitspruit, en Hy sal die tempel van die Here bou.” (OV.)

Hierdie is ‘n profesie wat verwys na die Here Jesus Christus. God het ‘n wonderlike belofte aan Dawid gemaak. (2 Sam. 7:16).

Dawid se koningskap het tot ‘n einde gekom, maar God se belofte aan hom is vervul deur die koms van Jesus. Daarom word Hy ook in die Skrif genoem die Seun van Dawid.

Die koninkryk van Jesus het dus uit die dooie stomp van Dawid gegroei tot die grootste koninkryk wat die wêreld nog gesien het.

Die Here Jesus het nie in die wêreld gekom as ‘n magtige kryger nie, maar as ‘n baba, soos die spruit uit ‘n dooie stomp. Hy is gekruisig, wat ons more herdenk, maar het uit die dood op-gestaan, opgevaar na die hemel en sit op Sy troon as die Koning van die konings en die Here van die heersers. (Openbar-ing 19:16)

Die Skrif sê verder die Spruit sal die tempel van die Here bou. Hierdie tempel word nie met stene of klippe gebou nie, maar met wedergebore mense. Saam verteenwoordig die heiliges die tempel van God.

Is jy ‘n dienskneg van die Spruit? Sy Naam is Jesus Christus, maar Hy word ook genoem: Wonderbare Raadsman, Magtige God, Ewige Vader, Vredevors. (Jesaja 9:5).

‘n Negentienjarige vreemdeling wat onlangs hier in ons dorp

gestrand was, moes uit onkunde noodgedwonge op straat oornag en bedags vra vir kos om aan die lewe te bly en geld om in Gauteng by familie te kan kom.

Sy nood en vernederende bedel-tog is na etlike dae beëindig toe hy ingelig en oor die weg gehelp is na die plaaslike JRS (Jesuit Refugee Service) wat geleë is op die hoek van Jeppe- en Burgerstraat in Makhado (Louis Trichardt).

Die JRS is ‘n internasionale hulp-organisasie wat wêreldwyd in meer as 50 lande – in krisisgebiede soos in die huidige Sirië en Suid-Soedan - betrokke is by noodlenigingswerk onder ontwrigte gemeenskappe. Die plaaslike kantoor is des-tyds hier geopen toe groot getalle ontwrigte vreemdelinge uit buur-state oorkant die Limpopo dikwels hier gestrand was, terwyl hulle probeer deurbeweeg het na familie of moontlike werksgeleent heid in veral Johannesburg. Dit is ‘n organisasie wat stilweg besig is om alles in sy vermoë te doen wat welwillende, positiewe, gehoorsame gelowiges graag wil doen. Daarom verdien hulle ons waardering en aktiewe ondersteuning. Hulle is vir hul werk afhanklik van vrywillige skenkings.

A rare specimen

I was walking down the street when I was accosted by a particularly dirty and shabby-looking homeless man who asked me for a couple of dollars for dinner.

I took out my wallet, extracted a R200 note and asked, “If I give you this money, will you buy some beer with it instead of dinner?”

“No, I had to stop drinking years ago,” the homeless man replied.

“Will you use it to go fi shing instead of buying food?” I asked.

“No, I don’t waste time fi shing,” the homeless man said. “I need to spend all my time trying to stay alive.”

“Will you spend this on hunting equip-ment?” I asked.

“Are you NUTS!” replied the home-less man. “I haven’t gone hunting in 20 years!”

“Well,” I said, “I’m not going to give you money. Instead, I’m going to take you home for a shower and a terrifi c dinner cooked by my wife.”

The homeless man was astounded. “Won’t your wife be furious with you for doing that?

I replied, “Don’t worry about that. It’s important for her to see what a man looks like after he has given up drinking, fi shing and hunting.”

Hierdie rugbyspelers van Laerskool Louis Trichardt het almal uitgeblink tydens die Sonskyn Rugbyweek wat vanaf 27 tot 29 Maart in Marble Hall gehou is. Voor, van links na regs, is die O/11-spelers wat almal toekennings ontvang het: Erhard Senekal (beste heelagter), Dewald van Graan (beste agsteman) en Conrad Fourie (beste losskakel). Agter is die spelers van die eerstespan wat toekennings ontvang het: Nsuku Baloyi (beste vleuel), Roy Stewart (beste agsteman) en Theo le Roux (beste flank).

Laerskool Louis Trichardt se O/11- en O/13-skaakspanne het op 26 Maart in Polokwane te staan gekom teen die spanne van Pietersburg Laerskool in die finaal van die Skole Liga Skaaktoernooi. Afgeneem is die Triegie-spanne wat as wenners uit die stryd getree het.

Daar was soveel modder en reën tydens vanjaar se Cycle Centre Challenge dat deelnemers beswaarlik voor hulle kon sien, maar dit het nie die geesdrif gedemp nie.

Vanjaar se Cycle Centre Bergfiets-wedren op 13 April, aangebied in samew-erking met die P&L Fietsryklub, is in die vorm van ‘n Cross Country resies aangebied, wat behels dat deelnemers ‘n bepaalde sirkelroete ry en die vinnigste moontlike tyd probeer opstel. Die lengte van die baan wissel tussen 2 km en 6 km, afhangende in watter ouderdomskategorie deelgeneem word. Ouer deelnemers vol-tooi drie rondtes, terwyl jonger fietsryers

net een korter rondte voltooi.Die mansfietsryer wat die vinnigste

baantyd aangeteken het was Graham Crystal, met ‘n tyd van 00:17:12.

Eerste in die nippers-kategorie vir seuns O/10 was Hugo Rennings, gevolg deur Joshua Retief en Pepijn Rennings. In die sprogs-kategorie vir seuns O/13 was Owen Venter eerste om oor die wenstreep te ry, gevolg deur Claudio dos Ramos Abreu in die tweede plek en Tumi Thupana derde.

Zian van den Heever was die wenner van die sub-junior afdeling vir seuns O/14, gevolg deur Casper John Venter en Heine de Jager. In die afdeling vir O/16-seuns

was Edwin Simpson die wenner, gevolg deur Douglas Archer in die tweedeplek. Eerste tuis in die junior mansafdeling (O/18) was Komborero Bere, met Christo Hanekom en Pieter Jacobs onderskeidelik in die tweede en derde posisies.

Graham Crystal, die wenner van die mans O/23-afdeling, is gevolg deur Juan-dré Brits in die tweede plek. Die wenner van die mans O/29-afdeling was Marc van Zyl met Paul Carter tweede. In die sub-veteraan afdeling vir mans O/39 was Nico Geldenhuys eerste oor die wenstreep, met Shaun O’Callaghan tweede en Ross Clayton derde. Casper Venter was die eerste vete raan man (O/49) om die wedren

klaar te maak, gevolg deur Richardt Janse van Vuu ren (tweede) en Ste-fan Horn (derde). Johan van Dijkhorst was die eerste meester en Elmo Barnard die eerste se-nior man. In die vroue- en mei siesafdeling was die inskrywings maar skraal. Abigail van Niekerk wen die nipper-kate gorie in ‘n tyd van 01:18:54. Jessica dos Ramos Abreu wen die meisies O/12-kategorie, terwyl Emma Melville die sub-junior kategorie wen vir dogters O/14.

Lané du Plessis was die eerste O/18 vroue deelnemer om klaar te maak, gevolg deur Chanté du Plessis.

Sarah Venter het eer-steplek ingeneem in die veteraanafdeling, met Sanet Koekemoer in die tweede plek.

Sarah was ook die vroue fietsryer wat die vinnigste baantyd aangeteken het in ‘n tyd van 00:28:07.

Die fietsryklub het na afloop van die wedren die volgende borge be-dank vir hul ondersteu-ning: Cycle Centre (Bobby, Mohammed en familie), Talisman Louis Trichardt (Laurie en Jenny), die Zoutpans-berg Privaat Hospitaal, Har nam House (Wayne) en Komatiland Bosbou.

A total of 47 young mountain bikers from six schools across the Limpopo Province braved the misty, wet and extremely muddy Soutpansberg on Sat-urday to compete in the fi rst round of the Limpopo School Cycling challenge.

The Limpopo series for 2014 is present-ed by Debtsafe Pty (Ltd). Schools Cycling South Africa is growing very big, very fast, with more than 250 high schools taking part, leading up to the national Spur Schools Series Final. The racing is open to all schools and points are given to schools ac-cording to the r e s u l t s f r o m e a c h race.

The racing is in the cross-country (XCO) mountain bike format on a course of ap-proximately 5km per lap. In Limpopo, 12 high schools have already entered for the challenge, although only six could make it on Saturday. They were Louis Trichardt High School (LTT), Stanford Lake Col-lege, Ridgeway College, Frans du Toit, Pi-

etersburg Hoërskool and the Hanglip Akademie.

All the riders had a tough time negotiat-ing the slippery track,

with many riders getting to know Mother Earth a

bit better after taking a fall or two. “I think the Brown School won,” one mother remarked as it was at times impossible to see from which school the cyclists were as they were all covered, top to bottom and bikes as well, in mud.

In the sub-junior race, top honours in the girls

category went to Reese Bain from

Stanford,

with Louis Trichardt’s Zian van den Hee-ver setting the best lap time in the boys’ race. The second boy home was Casper-John Venter from Ridgeway, followed by Heine de Jager (LTT) in third place.

Another young lady from Stanford, Anke Vaughn, took first place in the 15-year-old youth category for girls. School mate Kirsten Eastes was second and Sune Reyneke from Frans du Toit third. This category for boys was won by Devan Thompson from Frans du Toit, with Luke Burns and Matthew Wilkinson (both from Stanford) second and third respectively.

In the girls’ section of the 16-year-old category, Stanford once again came up tops, with Sarah Pogrund fi nishing fi rst and Charne Labuschagne (LTT) in second place. Edwin Simpson (Frans du Toit) clinched this category for the boys, with Stanford’s Lachlan Truesdale and Aiden du Preez second and third respectively.

In the fi ercely contested junior women’s and men’s category, Stanford boasted an-other fi rst place in the women’s category, with Abigail Joubert taking top honours while Bianca Oberholzer (LTT) was second. In the men’s category, upcoming young cycling sensation Kombo Bere (LTT) racked up another win. Another local cycling sensation, Marco Roets (Hanglip) was second, with third place going to Christo Hanekom (Pietersburg).

Stanford’s strong showing puts them on top of the log after the fi rst race, with 143 points. Louis Trichardt is second with 125 points and Frans du Toit third with 64. Ridgeway have 17 points and Hanglip 12. The next round of the series will be on 17 May at Stanford. For more information, phone Johan at 082 740 8740.
