Voting for the Nelson/Tasman amalgamation election closes this weekend. Who are you voting for?

water he is not using, especially in a tough eco-nomic climate. But Tim says that it is impossible to know what crops different farmers will grow in the future and the funding in 2015 must ac-count for the beyond the present time. Because the majority of the costs will be a fixed fee, it is integral that the money is paid by everyone. The money, however, is not likely to be required until 2015.Dennis is chair of the Delta Zone, part of the Waimea Water Augmentation Committee. He firmly believes the dam must go ahead and says NCC still have time to put their offer back on the table, labelling it as a “political trick” around the time of an amalgamation vote. “They’ll want wa-ter in 20 years and there’s only one place they’re gonna come. It perhaps is a reason for amalga-mation, but it’s a nasty trick at a time where the whole region needs to be working together to get a security of water,” says Dennis.

If the dam does not go ahead, there will be other measures taken to assure water usage is lowered. That could result in irrigators being forced into watering just 50 per cent of their crop. “That is going to have a major economic impact. Having said that, it has to stack up as an affordable pro-ject for everyone that is paying,” says Tim. “It’s all fixed cost, there’s only a small amount that will go towards the running of it. So if someone doesn’t pay, that has to be passed on to someone else. We can’t carry a shortfall.”Tim says the feedback from the submissions in-dicates most people want TDC to work on the Lee Valley Dam; they just want the costs final-ised. “They just want it stacked up financially. We’ve got that loud and clear anyway.”The first of the verbal submissions will be heard on April 23 at the Council Chambers from 1pm to 4:30pm. The council will consider all submis-sions to aid the final decision-making to have the final Long Term Plan released before 30 June.Copies can be found in all TDC libraries.

“I’m voting the Richmond way, so against amalgamation. Just listening to other people and basically I think we’re a little bit more stable.”

Hazel Ashe, Richmond.

“So far I’d say for amalgama-tion. I don’t see the point in doubling up.”

Wendy Wallias, Moutere.

“There should be more money put into protecting the envi-ronment and into bio-diversi-ty. Whoever does that will get my vote.”

Suzanne Horncastle, Rich-mond.“I need to look into it more. If it’s for unity then I’d vote for amalgamation but if it’s just a money issue then I’d vote against.”

Waimea Village working on halting fee increaseBehind-the-scenes work is on go-ing to stop a massive fee increase says the chair of the Waimea Village Residents Committee.Jerry Rowland says the committee is working hard to make sure the fee increase issue is solved “once and for all”.In January Michael and Carolyn Wright, owners of Waimea Village, proposed to raise the monthly fee residents pay from $125 to $284. Residents called foul and have since protested on the street and told the

Wrights they will not pay for an in-crease they say is “unfair”.The Wrights have appointed an ar-bitrator to rule on the dispute but the residents committee is hoping to avoid that process as it costs around $80,000 and they just went through it a year ago when the fee was put at $125 from $80. “We are still work-ing through the process,” says Jerry. “But we are very humbled with the huge amount of support we have re-ceived from residents and members of the community.”

Sanitarium threatens Richmond retailerThe owner of a boutique shop selling UK prod-ucts for ex-pats in Richmond has been threat-ened with legal action over his selection of breakfast cereals. Two weeks ago representatives of Sanitarium walked into English Bob’s Emporium in central Richmond demanding it stop selling Weetabix, an English alternative to Weet-Bix. Owner Bob Wren says the pair from the food company threatened legal action if he did not comply, because they felt Weetabix was too similar to their own Weet-Bix and that it must come off the shelf immedi-ately. Sanitarium New Zea-land general manager Pierre van Heerden says selling Weeta-bix in New Zealand breaches a trademark held by the company. He added that Weet-Bix could not be sold in England because of a similar scenario, as it would breach a trademark. “We own the trademark in New Zealand and actually spend a lot of money in marketing those trade-marks. So anyone else bringing in products of similar names or similar trademarks are actually infringing those under New Zealand law,” says Pierre.

Pierre says it is “normal trade practice” to pro-tect intellectual property. It did not matter that English Bob’s Emporium was only a small bou-tique stop. “English Bob” says he is furious at the threat and says Sanitarium is just “bullying” his small busi-ness. “They said it sounds too much like Weet-Bix. But it’s a totally different product. English people ask me to get this in,” says Bob. “They

told me they had stopped all of the North Island Eng-lish Corner Shops from selling it be-cause they were supplying them to the supermarkets.” He says that he sells only two box-es of Weetabix a week, adding the fact that they were double the price of Weet-Bix suggest-ed that custom-ers only bought Weetabix for sen-timental reasons.

“If they don’t want Weetabix going massive then I can understand that. But I’m a boutique Eng-lish shop selling English stuff. I sell one or two a week. This is corporate bullying.”The Weetabix Food Company was incorporated in 1932, four years after New Zealand launched Weet-Bix. However, the original creator of the popular breakfast item can be traced to both companies.

Man delivers daughter at homeMia Redwood was born in safe hands last week – her father’s.James Redwood can go one further than the ma-jority of other dads, delivering his own daughter at his Richmond home. When his wife Sarah Redwood started getting contractions at 5:40am last Saturday morning, it was decided that she better get to the hospital im-mediately. James called the midwife and said to meet at the Nelson Hospital. But then everything seem to happen in fast forward for the Redwoods as Sarah went into labour just moments later, be-fore they could make it out of the house. The baby

was coming and it was coming now.James was going to have to deliver his new baby daughter himself under his own roof. His immedi-ate reaction was to think back to medical courses he had been on, but it was only a midwife on the other end of his cellphone that could provide him with all of the right information during the birth. It was a quick process for Sarah however. There were no complications during the birth, only the phone call to the midwife disconnecting halfway. James and Sarah, along with first daughter Ava, were holding Mia just two hours after the contrac-tions started occurring every ten minutes. Mia weighed 8.6 pounds when she was born. “We thought we had a wee while to go when we had called the midwife and the babysitter,” says Sarah. “As we were getting ready it was all over.”All that was needed now was a quick call back to the midwife to say the baby had been born.James was not aware of anyone else that had de-livered their own child at home. “It is pretty cool but I think other people think it’s more exciting than what we do. It’s kind of a strange one. It is neat to be able to say you delivered your own daughter,” he says. But the Richmond couple ad-mit that when/if child number three comes along then it will be back to the hospital. “We wouldn’t plan to do it like that again, no. But it wasn’t a bad experience either. We were just lucky that it went really well. If there had been a complication we would’ve been in trouble, but the midwife wasn’t far away.”Another perk about the home birth, James car-ried on hanging curtains when it was all over. “It’s nice just to be in the comfort of your own home afterwards.”

NEW ADDITION: James and Sarah Redwood, along with two year old Ava, celebrate the arrival of new-born Mia last week. Mia was born at home after Sarah’s pregnancy happened early than expected.

Tasman District mayor Richard Kempthorne has admitted fault in the an-ti-amalgamation flyer the Tasman District Council sent to its ratepayers two weeks ago, throwing the result of this month’s poll in doubt.Richard says he will pay back the $3088.14 the flyer cost but Nelson mayor Aldo Mic-cio, also the representative of electors for the issue, says if current poll for amalga-mation falls over, the courts could rule to overturn it or declare it invalid.Last week the Auditor General ruled that the flyer, sent out in the TDC’s Newsline

newsletter was in breach of the council’s resolution not to spend any money pro-moting or opposing the proposal to unite the Tasman and Nelson councils. “The Auditor General has tak-en the view when read as a whole the flyer was not neutral and op-poses amalgama-tion. I have accepted that view and will accordingly make good the loss incurred,”

says Richard. The flyer depicted a square peg being nailed into a round hole and was titled

‘Amalgamation at what cost...’Aldo says the “il-legal and biased” flyer throws the result of the poll in doubt. “It is very disappoint-ing that the TDC

felt it necessary to play an undemocratic game by distributing negative and biased

propaganda,” says Aldo. “I accept mayor Kempthorne’s apology and hope that peo-ple who have not voted yet will look be-yond the bias and read the official Local Government Commission’s reorganisation scheme and judge it on its own merits.”However, if the result goes against amal-gamation in Tasman he says he will not dispute it, although if ten residents in Tas-man do, it will be up to the courts to decide whether the result will stand. The poll on whether or not the two coun-cils should amalgamate closes this Satur-day at 12noon.

Donated possum traps come from far and wideA 13 year old Belgrove possum hunter has received around three separate donations of pos-sum traps after his were stolen in Pretty Bridge Valley a fortnight ago.Isaak Guyton regularly traps possums with his father near their family home. Isaak sells the fur to make pocket money. But one day when Isaak and his fa-ther went to check on the traps, 17 of the 20 were missing. The possum traps that were sto-len had been a Christmas pre-sent.Following an article in the Waimea Weekly a fortnight ago, Isaak has received close to 30 possum traps from three differ-ent people. A man from Cul-verden was one of the donators, saying he had read the story and was keen to pass them on. An-other of the donators was a pos-

sum monitor. The third person was one of his father’s work-mates.“I’m quite pleased that there were some nice people out there that would do that,” says Isaak. “After we got the paper, the day after a guy from Culverden rung up and said he wanted to donate me some traps.”Isaak says he contacted Waimea Weekly because he wanted his original traps returned. But he has been overwhelmed with the response. He was quick to make the most of his new traps and caught 15 possums on the weekend. He was unlikely to return to the same spot that his original traps were stolen from. “I was going to keep doing it anyway, but I was going to have to save up and buy some more traps. So hope-fully nobody steals them. It’s a real shame the person that took them hasn’t come forward.”

Ph 546 5012 - 59 Parkers Rd, Tahunanui

As the the amalgamation vote draws to a close I am moved to ask a few questions. It is unfortunate that our society’s historical memory is so short because had we greater memory of the past we would almost certainly not consider amalgama-tion.Are people aware that many years ago New Zea-land was run by Provincial Councils which were then divided up later to allow people to have greater input and control over community deci-sions?Have there been any truly meaningful savings or improvements from the last round of amalgama-tions (Murchison, Golden Bay, Motueka becom-ing TDC)?Are people aware that Auckland (and Christch-urch due to the rebuild issues) is listed as a risk to the affordability of housing in New Zealand due to it’s size and domination of housing in the Auck-land region?Does anyone really believe that a larger bureau-cracy will be more efficient and cost effective? Re-ally? Has that ever happened in the history of de-mocracy? We are talking about bureaucracy here!Did any of the ‘Think Big’ projects of the Mul-doon era deliver the promised outcomes? How many of the promotors of amalgamation are truly trustworthy? How many are not trustworthy at all, based upon recent evidence? Finally do you really want the democratic system to be heavily influenced by not one but two, non-elected advisory panels? Is that democracy at all? Shouldn’t those boards also be elected?Think carefully before you vote. A yes vote has very serious implications for democracy and ef-ficiency that may not be the touted or expected outcomes.

Kelvin Woodley, Tasman.

TDC office upgrade on trackfor September completionThe TDC offices on Queen St in the heart of Rich-mond have been in construction since the end of last year and are on track to meet their deadline. The December flooding held construction back one week when the project started but that has since been recovered by Gibbons Construction’s builders as it looks set to be finished in Septem-ber.The upgrade will give the TDC office building a new improved entrance with the customer ser-vice area moving towards the front.

In the past few years, TDC has had to move staff off site because of growth. If amalgamation does not go ahead, the Tasman District Council offices upgrade should keep until 2020 before it needs another one.If amalgamation does happen, or if TDC is re-quired to take on any more services, then it should be able to cope, but may need further upgrades.TDC property manager Jim Frater says the cur-rent stage is re-framing and work on the roof is likely to start within the next few weeks.

Wakefield Scouts to contest Regional Camper’s CupA troop of Wakefield Scouts is heading for Christchurch this weekend to contest the 2012 Regional Camper’s Cup.Eight troops from the Nelson/Tasman region attended the Founder’s Day camp in February. There they had to compete for a range of tro-phies, with the overall winning cup going the way of Wakefield, giving them the chance to rep-resent the region in Christchurch.Wakefield Scouts also won best campsite at the Founder’s Day camp.Scout leaders could help with cooking and their camping set up. But at the Camper’s Cup they

must do everything without the support of the leaders. There are 19 scouts in Wakefield, but only six can go to the Camper’s Cup. Scouts will have to build items like a rotating clothesline, sinks and gateways. They will be judged on cooking skills and hygiene, airing tow-els and their uniform. This is the first year that Wakefield will send a troop to the Camper’s Cup.Leader Sheryl Guyton says the Camper’s Cup will really test the scouts’ time management skills. “It teaches them lots of life skills,” she says.

The rea-son for this will become apparent very soon. And I’m standing in a theatre. Operating Theatre Num-ber 6. My wife’s uncon-scious. Not my doing, I assure you. She’s under the watchful eye of the anesthetist), and she’s sleeping through her caesarean section. Not her preferred choice. She wanted to meet bubs on arrival. Dictates of health, I’m afraid. So what does this mean for me? Daddy’s left holding the can. In this case, the ‘can’ is an extremely cute, 8lbs 1oz baby with jet black hair and almond eyes that are opening and shutting, opening and shutting, try-ing to get used to this whole ‘light’ thing. To quote from The Matrix for a moment... Neo: “Why do my eyes

hurt?” Morpheus: “You’ve never used them before.”This adorable little package is pressed against my pasty chest. Yup, that’s why the hospital gown is on backwards. Skin on skin. That’s the way baby’s like it. Understandable, I reckon. Bubs has been completely enveloped in her mum for the last nine months. And now she’s be

been abruptly ‘delivered’ into the World Major. A whole lot of space, light, sound and general ca-cophony of strange stuff that she’ll get used to...in time. So baby’s happy. She’s feeling at home with her skin-to-skin cud-dles. What about Daddy? Mum’s awake now. The land of milk and honey

is open for business, and my wife couldn’t be happier about that. She’s missed out on 1st contact, she and baby are making up for some lost time. And I’m watching nearby. Not feeling like a third wheel, or tits on a bull. Like a Dad. A proper Dad that gets to protect my baby from the word ‘go’. She and Mummy will be tight over the next year. But baby knows I’m here. We had the first two hours of her life together. A baby girl and a bloke with his hos-pital gown on backwards. - Ed.

Q: I asked to put a gift on layby at a local shop. The assistant asked meto sign a receipt and said I would be charged a layby fee. I told her that I thought that layby did not incur fees. I was assured that this was normal. What do you think?

A: When you ask to put an item on layby, an agreement is made between you and the retailer. You will be required to pay 10-15% deposit, and agree to pay a certain amount every week until the item is paid off and you can take the item away from the shop. There is no fee for this. The retailer can ask to charge storage if the item is large but must ask you first. You can ask the retailer to reimburse this fee.

One of our stores is having a birthday…. Barkers turns 40 this year! As many of you know Barkers holds a special place for me, and the many customers I got to know.On Saturday, a shopping exhibition was apparently needed and our daughter, who is currently home from varsity for the holidays, decided that she and her dad needed to do a Barkers shop. New jeans and stylish shirts were purchased and both were commenting to me later how incredibly helpful the manager Lynley was, making the whole experience genuinely enjoyable.Barkers is proud to be the official formalwear supplier to the All Blacks. With superb quality merino suiting, two-ply cotton shirts and fine silk ties, you can dress how the team wear, when they’re off the field. Make sure that you drop by and have a chat with Lynley and her team, and check out the latest arrivals of shirts, trousers and fabulous winter jackets. Enjoy your week and I look forward to meeting you here at Fashion Island.

Early settler connection with

WakefieldThe ancestors of Nelson’s pioneers are celebrating this month, marking 170 years since they arrived to the region.Eleanor Duncan is the great, great, granddaughter of William and Sarah Eves who arrived to Nelson from Kent, England on April 10, 1842 aboard the London. Now living in Stoke, Eleanor says she is proud of her ancestry and remembers tales of early life in the Waimea region from her grandmother, also named Eleanor. This is Eleanor’s story of her ancestors that she sent to Waimea Weekly:William and Sarah Eves already had four children before arriving in New Zealand and had son James William soon after arrival, claiming to be one of the first children of British descent to be born in Nelson. When the first census was taken in Nel-son in 1845, William and Sarah were liv-ing near Spring Grove in a raupo dwell-

ing. By 1849 they were well established on a 25 acre farm in Bridge Valley, they now had two boys and five girls.Dovedale in 1860 was largely covered by bush, the main industry was felling trees and selling fence posts and fire-wood. In 1863 a four foot wide track was cleared between Pigeon Valley and Dovedale. In 1874 the road was devel-oped between Dovedale and Wakefield. The average wage at the time was seven shillings a day. In 1870 son James mar-ried Mary Ann Gibbs and they moved to a farm near Dovedale, they had 10 children. James and two of his sons Joesph and Samuel started a saw mill in Truss’s Val-ley. Eldest daughter Eleanor married William Amos, who drove the stage coaches for Jack Newman Bros, travel-ling to Wakefield and the Moutere. They had five children of which my mother Effie was one. Another daughter of

James was Esther, who taught school at Orinoco and Riwaka. Her son was Keith Holyoake who later became Prime Min-ister of New Zealand and was also the Governor General. Another son Charles attended Nelson College. He loved rug-by and played for the 1st 15 for three successive years, he also competed in a scholarship against Ernest Rutherford.170 years ago this month my ancestors, William and Sarah Eves were pioneers, arriving in Nelson on the 10th April 1842 after 5 long months from Kent, England aboard a ship “The London”. It weighed 388 tonnes and was captioned by Joesph Gibon. Two months earlier “The Fifeshire” has arrived bringing the first main body to Nelson. Do you have a story about your ances-tors in our region? We would love to hear your story. Contact us at 544 9037.

Rising starA promising young player from Club Waimea’s Squash Section has been selected to play for the New Zealand Junior Nationals team. At only 15 years of age, Sophie O’Connell is ranked 6 in New Zealand for under 17 girls. She has represented Wellington District Squash at Jun-ior Nationals Team Event for the last two years, and is currently representing the country in the New Zealand World Junior Girls Squad 2012.Sophie trains at the club weekly with Coach Neville Fyfe and plays interclub for Club Waimea. Her commitment and dedication has payed off and Club Waimea is proud to help sponsor her for the training camps and tourna-ments that she will be travelling to this year.Sophie has already played the NZ Junior Open last week-end and looks forward to competing in the Wellington Junior Open later this month, before the South Island and North Island Champs in July, followed by the Squash NZ Junior Nationals.“Sophie is a fantastic player,” says Brendon Whitley, the Waimea squash club convenor. “We have no doubt that she has an excellent future ahead in this sport.”

More than 100 bowlers from 12 south island clubs descended on Club Waimea as the Indoor Bowls Section hosted the Clubs NZ South Island Bowling Champi-onships over the Easter weekend. The four-day tournament played singles, pairs, triples and fours over the long weekend.Club Waimea’s players were among skilled indoor bowlers with resident players coming equal third in both the singles and pairs. The triples and four’s teams took the spotlight however, both tak-ing out the top position in their respective categories. Lewis Della Bosca played alongside Jean and Kevin McKenzie in the triples, defeating Greymouth WMC in a hard fought battle, before joining forces with Nathan Della Bosca to overcome a Christchurch team. This was the first event that the team played together, but their success will be recorded in Club Waimea’s history books as the first tournament win in more than a decade, the Club previously having claimed tournament victory in 1999.If you’re looking for a fun, social, low impact sport, Indoor

Glen Beattie, Clubs NZ area delegate, congratulates young Squash player Sophie O’Connell on receiving sponsorship.

Bowls is a great option. It is low cost, with flat-soled shoes as the only equipment requirement, and you can play it as socially or competi-tively as suits you. Club Waimea is privileged to have strong players who are available to coach or mentor new players. Championship Success!

Waimea District did not escape the tragedy of those lost lives with 161

names on the World War Memorials.

Also please remember all forces that returned home to a different

life after battle, and being away all those years changed things for ever. A lot of them settled in our region, raised families and played a very

important part of day to day life for many years. Their families are what

we call our locals now!

Club Waimea’s Snooker Section is proud to in-clude Michael Shanaher in their number as one of the top young cueists in the country. At only 18 years of age, Mike is already building a solid reputation as one of the nation’s great up and coming players. This weekend Mike qualified top of his section in the National Junior 8 Ball Pool Champion-ships which was held at The Suburban Club, and was chosen to captain the South Island team in the annual North v South match.Although beaten in the semi-finals of the indi-vidual event, he won the play-off for third place, making it the third consecutive year that he has finished in this position. Two years ago, Mi-chael was the youngest player to be selected in the Nelson Pool Association senior representa-tive team, receiving that honour at just 16 years of age. This year Mike has extended his range of skills, moving effortlessly to snooker on full sized ta-bles. He has quickly made his mark, reaching the final of the Club Waimea Singles Cham-pionships. Having despatched several much more expe-rienced players during section play, he took the five-time titleholder to a third and deciding frame before losing 2 - 1.The National Snooker Coach, Gary Gillard of Canterbury, has followed Mike’s progress with much interest, and ar-ranged for him to compete in the Canterbury Under 21 Snooker Championships last month. Michael made his presence in the sport known, winning the title at the raw age of 18, before playing in the National Under 21’s the next day, where he was eventually defeated in the semi-finals.In recent weeks, he has been playing in the local Interclub

Without a doubt, this family has a great future in cue sports, and the progress of these two likeable lads will be closely followed by pool and snook-er enthusiasts in the years ahead.

Rene and Amelia from Café in the Vineyard are celebrating their sec-ond anniversary at the local café and they’re still loving every day. When they took over at the cafe in the midst of a recession, they real-ised that to make the venture a suc-cess would require plenty of hard work backed up with consistently great service and outstanding food. This recipe for success worked well and they have been busy with hap-py customers coming through the doors, many of who return on a reg-ular basis. Rene and his team in the kitchen topped it all off by winning a 2012 NZ Beef and Lamb Award, the fifth time Rene has been rec-ognised in these awards. Rene and Amelia acknowledge that running a successful business is definitely a

team effort and they’d like to thank their fantastic full time staff – Wen-dy, Greg, Tom, Courtney and Han-nah, together with a wonderful team of casual staff, for their dedication. “We’ve also had tremendous support from our suppliers and the winery who have constantly offered great advice and shown great patience over our first two years,” says Rene. The Café is ideal for private dinner functions such as business meetings, private functions and weddings and offers a choice of set menu or buffet meals. Their lunch menu is available daily from 11-30am to 2-30pm with popular platters available until 4pm. Organic fair trade Sublime coffee, award winning Waimea Wines and Sprig and Fern Beer on tap are avail-able all day.

Local premieres first documentaryHe’s done it all, and on every continent, now people in his home town will get to see exactly how he did it.Mark “Hap” Cameron finished his quest to work on every continent on the world before his 30th birthday last November. He is now writing a book on the journey and preparing for the first public show-ing of a documentary he made with the award-winning film maker Richard Sidey this Friday. The film follows Hap’s final journey through Africa where he worked with Melbourne based charity Bikes for Hu-manity to ship a container of disused bikes from Australia to Africa and use the container to set up a bike work shop for locals. He says making the film was a test but seeing it all come together has been a thrill. “The original plan was for Sich [Richard] to come with us but he had to pull out so I went out and bought a camera, he gave me a quick lesson and that was it. But he has done all the

shooting in Melbourne and all the edit-ing and because he is super talented I’m really happy with the outcome.”The documentary will be entered in a number of film festivals but it will be Nelsonians who will have the first op-portunity to watch it with Hap hosting its premiere at Vertical Limits this Fri-day. He says the team at Vertical Limits kindly offered a venue and he saw it as the perfect opportunity to show it. “It’s great because this is my home town and it will be awesome to see people’s reac-tion to it.”The venue can hold only 70 people so Hap says it is a first in, first served sce-nario and is urging people to bring their own cushion, beanbag or chair. A note donation will also be asked for. “We’ve done all this on a shoestring budget and the festivals are expensive so all money collected will be used to pay entry fees for us.” Doors will open at 7pm.

Mark “Hap” Cameron filming in Africa last year. The premiere of his documen-tary is being held this Friday.

Country women to walk NZRural Women New Zealand members and friends will be pulling on their walking shoes and attempting to walk the length of New Zealand later this month. It is all part of a global challenge initi-ated by the international organisation, the Associated Country Women of the World. The aim is to raise funds for pro-jects that will help rural women in de-veloping countries set up out of poverty.Rural Women NZ members have or-ganised some exciting walks, and will be tallying their total distances towards the goal of walking 1600 kilometres - the approximate length of New Zealand. At around 10 am on April 29, women’s

groups from the four corners of the earth will begin walking, as part of this ‘Women Walk the World’ event. The St Arnaud leg, which is closest to the Nel-son region, will be held two days earlier on April 27.Some walkers are being sponsored, while other groups are charging a small entry fee to raise funds. To help keep track of distances walked, the New Zealand Walking Access Com-mission has kindly sponsored a number of pedometers for each group.Members of the public are welcome to join in. Welcome to our April Newsletter,We hope you all had an enjoyable Easter and are still enjoying the School holidays, we certainly have had some super weather for this special time of the year. At our meeting this month we had a short discus-sion about the amalgamation. You will all have had your voting papers arrive and we urge you all to make your decision and get them in the post before April 21 2012.With the great weather we were able to at last get the anti-graffiti coating on the wall, thanks to Ham-ish and Tracey and the use of a mates ute to tow the cherry picker kindly donated by Hi Reach Access Solutions. Thanks guys for your help in getting this completed. It means that now all we have to do is get the signage done and plan a ceremony to celebrate the completion. Thanks again to everyone who has helped us with this project.A suggestion was made at our meeting that with the cycle trail underway it would be good to have some bike stands at various locations to make it easier for cyclists using the trail. Please remember to use the doggy doo bags that are available when taking your dog out for walks. It helps keep our place a great

place to go walking, cycling or run-ning. Do you have any ideas or im-provements we could make in our community? We are always on the look out for some way we can make things better. Let us know if you know of anything, no matter how small it may seem. Please come along to our next meet-ing on Tuesday 1 May, 7.30pm at the School Staffroom, Brightwater. Eve-ryone is most welcome.Your Community Association.

Brightwater Playcentre UpdateThe Supervision team organised some great excursions in Term 1,in-cluding a trip to Rabbit Island where the children had a blast exploring the beach and collecting natural materi-als to use in collage and other crea-tive play. Also, the children had an exciting hands-on experience at the Richmond Fire Station and learnt the importance of fire safety. Thank you very much to the team at the Rich-mond Volunteer Fire Brigade for making our visit a memorable one.We are looking forward to holding a Fundraising Quiz Night on Sat 12 May at the Brightwater Hall, which is guaranteed to be an entertaining night with lots of great prizes. And don’t forget, all new families are wel-come to come along to Brightwater Playcentre in the new term for three free visits, or to phone on 03 542 3270

and talk to one of our friendly team for more information.

Waimea QuiltersWaimea Quilters are meeting at Hope School on Thursday 10 May at 7.30pm. We have a meeting first, show & tell and then work on our own projects or do a bit of teaching. Supper served and library books available. We’d love to see you there.

Brightwater Rural Women NZThe Brightwater Branch of Rural women NZ were entertained with a talk By Pat Borlase describing her early life at Tophouse and her mar-riage to Murray when they first lived in the family bach at the Lake which had no running water, no power, no telephone, and no sanitation and a bucket under the sink. The only way of going anywhere was by using the local bus which ran three times a week in summer and twice a week in winter. It left a 7.15 am and returned about 7pm. When the power arrived, what joy to be able to plug in an elec-tric jug to have running hot water and an iron. When Murray became a councilor, Pat went with him to func-tions but on one occasion panic set in when the Governor General asked to come to morning tea. With borrowed tea service, teaspoons and cake forks, a coffee pot and chairs the morning went well and she was never again so

Annetta Hodges, Margaret Faulkner, Diane Higgins and Gabriele Abeltshauser from Brightwater Branch of Rural Women enjoy the re-cent workshop on the art of preserving and jam and pickle making.

Have you voted yet? Remember to send your completed voting forms away for the proposed TDC, Nelson Council Amalgamation.

Desexing clinic coming to save lives and dollarsAn animal desexing bus is coming to the Nelson SPCA, targeting low or no income pet owners. The SPCA Mobile Clinic offers free desexing operations to animal own-ers, so it can prevent unwanted ani-mal births. SPCA centres all around New Zealand work hard to prevent unwanted births by desexing all incoming animals before they are adopted out. For members of the public whose pets did not come through the SPCA and as a result are not desexed, the mobile clinic offers a free option. This will be the fourth time the cara-van has come to the Nelson region. It did not visit last year.SPCA Nelson manager Donna

Walzl says any low income earners that are interested must apply now because spots are filling up fast. “We just want to reduce the number of unwanted animals that come into the centre. It gets more expensive for them and it certainly doesn’t help us,” she says. The majority of dog spaces had al-ready filled up, but there are plenty of opportunities for cat owners to apply. The mobile clinic will target crossbreeds only. The mobile clinic will be in Nelson from May 3 to 22, operating six days a week. It is run by a husband and wife team. To book your spot at the mobile clinic, please contact the SPCA on 547 7171.

The job of drilling 125 rock bolts into the cliff above Rocks Rd is pro-gressing well says NZTA, with full use of Rocks Rd due at the end of May.Abseilers and crew working from platforms have been working since last month to drill the bolts into the cliff face in an effort to secure it from further damage following last December’s floods.New Zealand Transport Agency, which owns the road, says the work involves drilling steel columns into the cliff face to hold it together, steel mesh is then placed over the bolts, and concrete sprayed over the sur-face to seal the rock face and reduce the effects of weathering. Around 400 square metres of netting will also be used and drainage will be improved so the cliff face will be less prone to becoming waterlogged. So far 80 of the bolts have been drilled and fixed in place. The re-maining 45 rock bolts will be com-pleted by next week says NZTA regional operations manager Mark Owen. “We will start placing the steel mesh this week, and the con-crete will be sprayed onto the sur-face during the first week of May.

We expect to complete this work by the end of May.”Mark says once this phase of work is complete, the shipping contain-ers and most of the existing road cones and barriers will be removed, enabling Rocks Rd to be reinstated to two lanes and the existing cycle ways reopened. The next phase of work, involving soil nailing and rock fall netting to future proof the cliff, is currently being investigated. Work is expected to be completed later this year, and will not restrict the road width during the day, so ef-fects on motorists and cyclists will be minimal. Mark says the work has taken longer than expected but will give a more comprehensive and “secure solution” in the long term. “We’ve been working on designs to stabilise the cliffs, and our investi-gations have shown that the areas that need special attention are larger than originally envisaged. It’s crucial we do a thorough job to ensure the safety of motorists and the long-term resilience of the route.” Hiway Geotechnical have been con-tracted to do the repairs. NZTA would not say what the project was likely to cost.

high competitive level, are doing it with friends as a social activity, or are taking a supportive role for a friend or family member. The Mixed Social League runs along-side the Premier grade season, with games held on Thursday nights at Saxton Stadium. This is a great way to get fit and active with your friends, or a perfect opportunity to meet new people and have fun as you do. The mixed social league is open to men and women from age 13 up.Thursday night is also when the Mas-ters League is played, a perfect way for women over 35 to retain the fit-ness and vibrancy that team sport encourages.Like all organisations, Nelson Net-ball has a huge number of people and groups who volunteer behind the scenes to make every season a great one. The groups include Nelson Netball Coaches Club, which aims to provide all coaches at the centre with development opportunities and running workshops for coaches. It’s a rewarding way to be involved and support players in your family or community. If you are interested in becoming involved in coaching, con-tact Trish.

Those who are happy remaining in a spectator position can consider becoming a bench official. Pathways are provided by The Bench Officials group to take a position which in-volves time and score keeping and statistics at local premier level all the way up to national and international level. The Nelson Netball Umpires com-mittee actively promotes and devel-ops umpires and anyone interested in umpiring can contact them through Nelson Netball.Nelson Netball is privileged to have the use of Saxton Fields to train and play. Over the last few years the fa-cilities have been upgraded, provid-ing well surfaced and fenced courts, and sufficient indoor courts to allow for games to be played regardless of weather. Saxton Stadium boasts five courts that are of a national standard and is the venue of choice for any national level games played in our region. The United States has been revealed as a possible destination for out-of-contract footballer Jeremy Brockie. The All White forward, who will become a free agent next month after completing a two-year spell with the Newcastle Jets, was back in Nelson this week for his stag do. With his wedding just one month away, Jeremy could tie the knot with a new team before then as he looks to secure his future on the pitch as well.Jeremy has two offers on the table from current A-League clubs and there is some interest from Asia. There is also interest from one franchise in Major League Soccer. While he remains tight-lipped on who exactly that franchise is, Jeremy says his next career move will revolve around the 2016 FIFA World Cup. “There’s another two years until the next

world cup, so I’m going to be factoring my deci-sion around still wanting to be in a league that is going to help to stay in the All White fold,” he says. “I don’t want to go to a league that will dampen my chances of playing for the national team. I’m not too worried about the money, not for the next couple of years anyway.”Newcastle Jets are in danger of folding after Hunter Sports Group owner Nathan Tinkler surprisingly handed back his license to Football Federation Australia last week. Jeremy could not agree to a new deal last month, but following HSG’s announcement it seems his future would have laid outside of Newcastle either way.The former Richmond Athletic junior scored nine goals in a breakthrough season with the Jets. A decision on his new club is likely to come in the next three weeks, when he is stopped being paid by Newcastle.

A new look Richmond Athletic side fought bravely, only to be overturned on the opening day of the football calendar.Up against former coach Steve Bignall’s FC Nel-son Sprig & Fern, it was another former star of the Richmond setup that stole most of the lime-light.Brazilian Davi Maciel struck the opening goal of the game, midway through the second spell and was the main go to man for the away side.Richmond Athletic skipper Michael Campbell was the pick of the home players while young-ster Bjorn Van Ginkel also displayed some good movements from the back.Nathan Halford and Moffat Kilifia killed off any chance of a Richmond comeback with two late goals.FC Nelson Fuji Xerox won the round’s only other match 4-1 against AMI Nelson Suburbs first XI. Nelson College had the bye. Last year’s runners up, Marlborough Mariners, will not contest this year’s title.

Nelson has been experiencing its most consistent weather now for the last few weeks, more so for fishing and looking at the long range fore-cast for the last week of the holidays, looks set to continue. Reports have been coming in thick and fast with excellent catches being caught in various locations.Dawnbreaker Gary Pantling was fishing out off Cable Bay last week in his Kayak and managed to land himself a nice brace of snapper. Dur-ing his hot fish-ing session he was completely blown away to catch a personal best snapper of just over 21lb. Apparently the smile was still on his face 3 days later. Other stories we have heard include catches of up to 20 snapper on a single boat in the vicinity of the Boulder Bank, The Glen, Pepin Island and Delaware Bay.The spat farm has been fished hard over the last few months and it would appear that the big King-fish have been a bit shy and only rats have been sighted. The odd big snapper is still about but it seems that the fish might be slowly moving heading up the coastline. The fring-es of the marine reserve in the Abel

Tasman have also been fishing well with some nice terakihi, brim and up to 40cm blue cod being taken. Large schools of kahawai have been sighted underneath working birds and have been up to 3 kilos in size.D’urville has seen groper now start-ing to be caught along with some huge kingfish. Dawnbreaker Dan Govier was lucky enough to land a horse of a kingfish weighing in at just over 22 kilos gutted and gilled. From now on the fishing should re-

ally start to go off in this area. Ke-nepuru has start-ed to produce some big snapper ranging from 10 to 20lb plus. As this is being writ-ten a text has just come through with another re-port of a 20.5lb snapper being landed. After hearing about all the re-ports of excellent

fishing being had, I would strongly recommend you get amongst the action before the weather turns, the other half finds more household chores, or some other fisho is send-ing pictures and texts of the fish you missed out on because your hooks were still in the tackle box. FOOTBALL: Emily Jensen’s Young Football Ferns have qualified for this year’s FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in style, notching a 9-0 win over Papua New Guinea in Auckland to rubber-stamp their ticket to Azerbaijan. New Zealand join Brazil, Uruguay, Colombia, Chi-na, Japan, DPR Korea, Gambia, Ghana, Nigeria and hosts Azerbaijan as nations already quali-fied for the 16 nation September 22 – October 13 finals. Emily started in all three games as New Zealand scored 29 goals and only con-ceded one.

CRICKET: Connor Neynens’ has certainly put his hand up for a ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup spot with an impressive showing at a quad-rangular tournament in Australia this month against some of the world’s heavyweights. The Wakefield all-rounder smashed a quick 33 off 27 balls in the semi-final loss to Australia. His 33 runs included three sixes. New Zealand fin-ished last in the tournament, beaten by Eng-land in the third/fourth playoff.

ATHLETICS: Phil Costley was in a class of his own as he showed a clean pair of heels to the others in collecting his fourth national moun-tain running title on Saturday in a time of 1 hour 10 minutes 31 seconds.

Waimea Old Boys might have the boot of James Lowe to thank after Saturday’s 25-24 victory over Riwaka. The star centre scored all of his team’s points en route to its first victory of the season. It was another cracker day at ‘the Jungle’ where Star and Garter Waimea Old Boys took on ENZA Riwaka. Waimea, hurting from last week’s narrow defeat at the hands of New World Huia, started the match all guns blazing with a lot of grunt work from Sam Prattley, Tom Williams and Tanuio

Piripi. The trio got plenty of good go forward ball for the backs and after ten minutes of constant pressure, Waimea Old Boys were finally on the board. James sneaked down the left wing and putting a grubber in and re-gathering to scoot 20 meters to score under the posts, despite questions of him stepping on the sideline.Waimea Old Boys started to fall off its game a bit in the remaining minutes of the half. This gave Riwaka some well deserved momentum which was capped off when they managed to dot down 25 minutes into the first half.

James did answer back, however, with a successful penalty kick. James took over the kicking duties from Kaide Whiting, and it paid dividends for the home side, asking for the tee every time they received a penalty within the opposite half.Riwaka once again found themselves in Waimea Old Boys territory, making the most of an overlap to score another try with just eight minutes left in the first 40. James put two more penalties over just be-fore the half to have Waimea Old Boys up 16-12 at oranges.Riwaka came out firing after the break to score another try. This was going to make

it a tough half for the boys in red and white But it was danger man James who started to shine busting tackles and some out-standing runs. But it was his boot that was keeping Riwaka at bay and giving them a little breathing space. With time almost up, Riwaka weren’t go-ing to lie down and happened to score in the corner with the kick to come to win it. Waimea Old Boys must have been think-ing déjà vu, following last week’s nail bit-ter, but this time it went Waimea’s way with the conversion just falling short giv-ing Waimea Old Boys their first win of the season.

A last gasp Murchison try gave them an important away victory to Stoke B’s on the weekend.Stoke started well in the first half and things were look-ing good for an easy victory, but after scoring three great tries in the first half, Stoke started to tire and Murchison scored right on the stroke of half time. The second half started as the first half finished. Mur-chison played to its strengths in the forwards and scored three tries in the second half. All were pick and drives from inside the five metre line. Stoke kept its nose in front with the help of two penalties to Ant Holder un-til in the final seconds of the match when Murchison struck the lethal blow by scoring in the corner to put them two points up and win the game 29-27.

Notice of Intention to Change of Reserve ClassificationsParts of Tapawera and Brightwater Recreation ReservesPursuant to Section 24 of the Reserves Act 1977, the Tasman District Council gives notice of its intention to change the classification of portions of the Tapawera and Brightwater Recreation Reserves. The affected portions of the respective reserves are utilised for the following activities:Tapawera Recreation Reserve – Toy Library, and PlaycentreBrightwater Recreation Reserve – Pinegrove KindergartenIt is considered desirable to change the classifications of the relevant portions of the reserves from Recreation Reserve to Local Purpose (Community Buildings) Reserves. This will more correctly align the current uses of the reserves to a more appropriate reserve classification. The intention is to have current uses reflected in the reserve classifications. This process is essentially an administrative action and there is no intention to change any current activities on these reserves. Recreation uses on these reserves will continue as they do now, and those portions of the reserves will retain Recreation Reserve status. Some car parking areas will be included in the change of classification process, but the car parks will remain available for all reserve users, as they are now. The change of classification for the Brightwater Reserve will be slightly larger than the land occupied by the Kindergarten at present. This is partly to minimise survey costs and partly to provide for potential expansion. For plans of the portions of the reserves intended for changes of classification, and to make further enquiries, please contact Robert Cant at Tasman District Council – [email protected], Ph 03 543 8400.Submissions or objections on the proposed classification changes should be made in writing, to the address below, and must be received no later than 4.00 pm on Monday 28 May 2012.
