HAPPY IRS DAY!
My Mother has developed (rather rapidly lately) dementia
with Lewy markers, which means that she is prone to having
hallucinations, both auditory and visual. It is not a big
problem during the day (when she thinks someone upstairs is
playing records and the “phantoms” she sees don’t frighten
her). At night it is a different story; I witnessed that during my
Easter visit. My sisters and I moved her temporarily to a
respite assisted living apartment while looking for a more
permanent situation where she can more easily have
assistance during the night if this should continue. I know many
of you have regularly prayed for her good health and well-
being. My family appreciates this very much. I will plan to
go back up on April 29 as I will need to help make sure her
independent-living apartment is vacated so as not to be
paying for two separate places.
What About My Aching Back? The folks who attended Mass
last weekend at Holy Ghost already know this but for the
others, this is the situation. After consultation with a spinal
surgeon and more x-rays it turns out that I will need two
spinal decompressions and a spinal fusion. At this point a
date has not been set as I am waiting for approval from the
insurance company before I can be put on the surgeon’s
schedule. I don’t know any other details yet but will make
sure that before it happens all of my duties will be covered. I
will keep you informed.
CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR NEWLY CONFIRMED: Last
Thursday the young people in our parishes received this
sacrament by which they promised to use the gifts of the Holy
Spirit, newly received, to spread the Catholic faith and to
defend it when attacked. All of us know that this is not really
possible if we do not refresh our souls every weekend by
participating in Holy Mass and by regularly confessing our
sins in sacramental confession. I ask all parents and family
members to assist them as they continue to mature in the faith
by giving them the best example and the support of your
prayers. The names of those newly confirmed are on the front
cover of this bulletin. Please congratulate them when you see
them.
Remember no one is allowed to post
personal messages on church bulletin boards
or elsewhere without prior permission
from the pastor.
MERCY SUNDAY WAS CELEBRATED LAST WEEKEND, the
2
nd
Sunday of Easter, a feast established in 2000 when
St. John Paul II canonized St. Faustina Kowalska, a Polish nun,
who was privileged to experience many encounters with Jesus,
the Lord of Mercy. Last Sunday we were also reminded that
Our Lord entrusted to the Church the sacrament of Mercy, or
Reconciliation, through which the souls of repentant sinners are
washed clean in the Blood of the Lamb of God as they
confess and receive absolution – mercy freely shown to those
who repent and confess.
During her encounters with Jesus, St. Faustina, like the
visionaries at Fatima in 1917, also experienced a vision of
hell. In her Diary she recorded the following, words
especially important for those who doubt the existence of hell
or that any soul actually goes there for eternity.
Sister Faustina's Vision of Hell
"I, Sister Faustina Kowalska , by the order of God, have
visited the Abysses of Hell so that I might tell souls about it
and testify to its existence...the devils were full of hatred for
me, but they had to obey me at the command of God, What I
have written is but a pale shadow of the things I saw. But I
noticed one thing: That most of the souls there are those who
disbelieved that there is a hell." (Diary 741)
These are the Tortures suffered by all the damned
together, but that is not the end of the sufferings.
Indescribable Sufferings:
There are special Tortures destined for particular souls.
These are the torments of the senses. Each soul undergoes
terrible and indescribable sufferings related to the manner in
which it has sinned.
I would have died:
There are caverns and pits of torture where one form of
agony differs from another. I would have died at the very
sight of these tortures if the omnipotence of God had not
supported me.
No One Can Say There is No Hell:
Let the sinner know that he will be tortured throughout all
eternity, in those senses of which he made use to sin. I am
writing this at the command of God, so that no soul may find an
excuse by saying there is no hell, or that nobody has ever been
there, and so no one can say what it is like...how terribly souls
suffer there! Consequently, I pray even more fervently for the
conversion of sinners. I incessantly plead God's mercy upon
them. O My Jesus, I would rather be in agony until the end of
the world, amidst the greatest sufferings, than offend you by
the least sin." (Diary 741)

Stewardship Reflection: “Jesus himself stood among them and
said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’ But they were startled and
frightened…” – LUKE 24:36-37—Throughout the day we have
many opportunities to “see the face of Jesus” in others and to
“be the face of Jesus” to others. Do we take that opportunity
to provide “peace” to those we encounter or are we afraid of
what others will think of us and do nothing? Pray for the
strength to live a “God-centered” life and not a “self-
centered” life.
Word of Life: “A model of care has been developed
specifically for families whose infant is likely to die before or
after birth. Often called ‘perinatal hospice,’ it's a way of
caring for both the baby and the baby's family before, as
well as after, birth.” - USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities,
“Supporting Families Who Receive a Prenatal Diagnosis”
www.usccb.org/prenatal-diagnosis.
“WHAT ABOUT THE CHURCH?”
What comes to mind when you hear the word, church? Do you
picture a building or religious object? Do you picture an
organization or a hierarchy? Does some person or persons
come to mind? Do you see yourself as one of those persons?
How do others contribute to your faith journey or your
relationship with God? How do YOU contribute to others faith
journey or their relationship with God? What About the Church
is the topic for our Alpha group’s discussion this week.
ARE YOU INTERESTED IN A TIME OF PRAYER!
Deacon Al Aulner is leading a prayer time in the church
each week while the Alpha group is meeting.
ALL IN THE PARISH ARE WELCOME EACH WEEK!
