PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

SOLOMON ISLAND CULTURAL IMMERSION PROGRAM MacKillop College has a very close link with the Visale Community High School in the Solomon Islands through our cultural immersion program which was established with members of staff visiting on a number of occasions to build and strengthen the link. During this time our MacKillop College community has been involved in various fundraising ventures to assist the people of Visale. Next week will see our second visit to Visale come to fruition. Eleven of our students from Years 10 and 11 together with five staff will depart Port Macquarie to immerse themselves in the community of Visale. Students and staff will be involved in a special program, attending classes and sharing their sporting, creative design and musical skills with the students and teachers at Visale Community High School. All those attending have personally shown their commitment by fully self-funding their trip. This financial commitment from the staff, students and their families is greatly appreciated and viewed as a generous act of community service. It is acknowledged as a wonderful witness of the Joy of the Gospel which Pope Francis has drawn all Christians to leave out. The driving force behind this program has been the commitment of Mrs Erin Denham and Mr Michael Kelly; Mr Kelly taking the lead while Erin has been on maternity leave. Mrs Wendy Kelly has been a wonderful support, sharing her organisational and creative talents. The whole team of staff and students are to be commended on their tireless efforts this year supporting a visit by staff and students from Visale Community High School, Sing for the Solomons and now their visit to the Solomons. We wish Mr Rob Denham, Mr Dave McMahon, Ms Holly Hitchen, Ms Joan Lancaster, Mr Michael Kelly and students Jessica Burge, Isobel Berryman, Tom Berryman, Hannah Cutmore, Brad De Domizio, Bianca Jamison, Jaymee-Lee Jubelin, Nick Lund , Charlotte Moore, Johanna Wright, and Sereana Zwaan a truly amazing experience and look forward to you sharing these experiences with the MacKillop Community upon your return.

PARENT NIGHT SUCCESS Wednesday night’s parent night was an outstanding success with record numbers in attendance. I would like to congratulate our parent assembly representative Mrs Debbie Ward whose hard work and passion for effective parent partnerships has been integral to this success and increased parent engagement. Debbie is a volunteer and gives very generously of her time to the MacKillop College community; I sincerely appreciate all that she is doing for our parents which in turn assists their sons and daughters. Sincere thanks to the wonderful parents who supported this activity. MACKILLOP COLLEGE PARENT SOCIAL GROUP All parents will soon be receiving a special invitation to our first more formal parent social gathering. The MacKillop College Parent Social Group has the next event in the final stage of planning. The decision was made to name this event, MacKillop in the Vines Dinner. I am looking forward to this exciting event and encourage parents to consider attending what is shaping up to be a lovely evening at Cassegrains Winery. In my conversations with parents who are keen to attend, I think it will be a matter of getting in very early as seating will be limited. THANK YOU FOR PORT MACQUARIE IRONMAN MacKillop College received $1,000 from the Port Macquarie Triathlon Festival Local Organising committee as a thank you to Alan Wheatland, staff and students for volunteering for this year’s event. The Certificate received thanked us “for being part of the IM 70.3 Port Macquarie and Ironman Australia 2016. Your support, energy and enthusiasm during the event was very much appreciated”. EVANGALISATION NEWS STREET RETREAT Six Year 11 students, Chloe Boller, Georgia Caire, Brad Ellison, Caleb Gallagher, Emily Towle and Isaac Lawrence along with Mr Col Coelho travelled to Brisbane on Thursday for a four day Street Retreat. This wonderful opportunity will see them work in a variety of ministry placements, such as helping with shelters and food for the homeless, visiting refugee support groups, assisting at St Vincent de Paul in areas such as clothes sorting and Buddies Days, and Red Cross blood donations. This is a great chance for these young people to put their faith into action and we look forward to hearing about their stories upon their return. VINNIES SLEEP-OUT FOR THE HOMELESS As part of their experience, these Street Retreaters are busy planning a sleep-out for the homeless, happening in Week 9 at St Joseph’s Regional College. It has been pleasing to see so much interest from students already and it promises to be a wonderful evening of learning and sharing. Thanks must go Zac Parnell and the Street Retreaters including Mr Coelho, for initiating and organising this event. TERM 2 COLLEGE MASS Next Wednesday, 22nd June the College will celebrate mass together. It is the Feast of Saints John Fisher and Thomas More, two men who fought for their beliefs and were subsequently martyred for remaining true to their ideals of justice and integrity. During mass we will have a special focus on social justice, and will be praying in particular for the plight of refugees around the world. Families and friends are most welcome to join us for this celebration, which begins at 9.00a.m. Joan Lancaster Leader of Evangelisation [email protected]
