Healthy eating costs anextra $1.50 per day

N EW Y ORK , 16 Dec That healthy foods costmore has become conven-tional wisdom, but a newstudy is the most thoroughyet in calculating howmuch more: about a dollarand a half.

Before now, weveseen studies looking at pric-es of one or a few foods ordiets, in one city and fromone store, said MayureeRao. And the results havebeen mixed, with somestudies nding that thehealthier options cost moreand some studies ndingthey dont.

Rao is a junior researchfellow at the HarvardSchool of Public Health

and a medical student atthe Warren Alpert Medical

School of Brown Univer-sity in Providence, RhodeIsland. She led the studythat was published in BMJOpen.

The research teamidenti ed 27 previous stud -ies from 10 countries thatmet their inclusion criteriaand reviewed each of them.Fourteen studies were con-ducted in the US, two inCanada, six in Europe andve in other countries in -cluding South Africa, NewZealand, Japan and Brazil.

Twelve of the stud-ies were market surveysthat evaluated the prices ofanywhere from two to 133foods each and included upto 1,230 stores.

Fifteen studies weredietary surveys that ranged

from 30 participants tomore than 78,000.

The researchers com-pared the costs of thehealthiest eating patternswith the least healthful andfound that the healthiest di-ets cost on average $1.47more per day based on ac-tual food intake, or about

$1.54 more per day for eve-ry 2,000 calories consumed.

The studies in the re-view used various de ni -tions of healthy - includ-ing comparing the amountof fat or sugar in similarproducts, or comparingwhole grain versus re nedcarbohydrate versions, orlooking at total fruit andvegetable intake or overall

Women with an especiallydeadly type of breast cancerwho received a treatmentregimen containing anexperimental AbbVie Incdrug prior to surgery arelikely to have a s igni cantlybetter response thanthose who get a standardchemotherapy regimen, according to data from aclinical trial.

Patients with so-calledtriple negative breast cancer,

who tend to be younger andhave a very poor prognosis, appeared to have double theresponse rate to the regimencontaining AbbViesveliparib in a new type ofstudy that exploits advancesin molecular understandingof the disease, researchersfound.

The trial dubbedI-SPY 2 is another step

toward developing morepersonalized treatments. Itsdesign allows researchers tocontinuously monitor howpatients respond as the trialprogresses and move patientsinto arms of the study testingdrugs from which they aremore likely to gain bene t.

This type of trialshould help companiesselect the right group ofpatients to enroll into larger, more traditional late stageclinical trials, potentially

cutting the cost of bringingnew medicines to market.

Drugmakers are underincreasing pressure to cutthe cost of new medicinesthat put a huge burden onhealthcare systems. Oneway to do that would bethrough more ef cient, alternative testing methodsthat lead to fewer trialfailures. Reuters

A currency for the future, or just a bubble?

B EIJING , 16 Dec Bit-coin, the virtual currency, has created something ofa frenzy in China, with itsvalue surging more than80 percent in a year. Untillast week, that is, when itplunged more than 30 per-cent after the central bankbanned nancial institu -tions from involvement inbitcoin trading.

The majority of Chi-nese investors, who seemto love speculation, knowlittle about the mechanismssurrounding the currency. They cant hold one in theirhands nor use bitcoin intheir normal daily lives.

Therefore, it seems likethe right time to damp downthe heated bitcoin trade inChina, which had account-

ed for more than half of thecurrencys global tradingvolume.

Its a game of specu-lation (in China), and fewpeople know or care whatsbehind it, said James Li,head of BTC360.com, a bit-coin trading platform whichhe founded this year.

Bitcoin was introducedin 2008 by a programmer,

or group of programmers, under the name of SatoshiNakamoto. It was designedto become an alternative togovernment-backed curren-cies.

There are 12.1 millionbitcoins in virtual circula-tion, and their supply isstrictly governed by rulesembedded in complicatedsoftware.

Most of the early bit-coin investors or collec-tors were geeks or nan -

cial experts. Even as an IT journalist, I cant explainthe mechanism of the vir-tual currency in a few sen-tences. The value of onebitcoin was up to 6,970yuan (US$1,143) lastmonth, compared with lessthan 100 yuan a year ago.

Despite the centralbanks announcement, itrebounded to about 5,036

yuan yesterday, after drop-ping to 4,500 yuan lastweek, according to BTC360and BTC China, the coun-trys biggest online bitcointrading exchanges.

Italy to provide port for Syrian chemicalweapons transfer

R OME , 16 Dec Italyhas agreed to provide a portfor use in the transfer ofSyrias chemical weaponsarsenal between ships onthe way to its destructionat sea, its Foreign Ministrysaid on Sunday.

Syria is due to handover deadly toxins whichcan be used to make sa-rin, VX gas and otherlethal agents under an

international agreementforged in the wake of an at -tack on the outskirts of Da-mascus which killed hun -dreds last August.

Danish and Norwegianships will collect the toxicarsenal from the Syrian portcity of Latakia. The chemi -cals will be destroyed at seaon board a specially adapt -ed US ship because theyare too dangerous to import

into a country.Until now, it was not

clear how the containers ofchemicals could be trans -ferred from the Scandinavi -an ships onto the US vessel.

An Italian ForeignMinistry of cial said theuse of the port was themaximum role Italy wasprepared to serve in the op -eration, and that the chemi-cals would not touch Italian

territory at any point. The of cial would not

    identify which port wouldbe used.

    Welbeck double lifts Uniteds spirits

L ONDON , 16 Dec England striker Danny

Welbeck made the mostof a rare start for Man-chester United with a rst-half double in a 3-0 win atAston Villa on Sunday asthe champions ended a runof four Premier Leaguegames without victory.

Welbeck, recalledin place of injured Robin

van Persie, struck twice inthree minutes for Unitedwho moved up one spot toeighth, 10 points behindleaders Arsenal.

United had sufferedsuccessive home defeatsby Everton and Newcastle

United that followed awaydraws with Cardiff City and

Tottenham Hotspur but out-classed the hosts and hadthe game safe when TomCleverley struck on 52 min-utes.

Before kickoff Wel-beck had scored as manygoals for England three

this season as he hadfor United but he was inthe right place to make thebreakthrough on 15 min-utes, poking home the re-bound after Adnan Januzajheaded against the foot ofthe left hand upright.

His rst PremierLeague goal since his rstday of the season doubleagainst Swansea was fol-lowed swiftly by a secondwhen he linked up with theimpressive Antonio Valen-cia, feeding the Ecuadorianand then sprinting into thebox to get on the end of hisreturn cross.

Welbeck was inchesaway from a hat-trick whenhe slid a shot past the farpost from a tight angle andalso went close after the

break when his chip over astranded Brad Guzan was just too high.

Cleverley said earlierthis week that some of hisperformances had been av-erage this season, but worea broad smile after running

on to Wayne Rooneys passto beat Guzan with a lowshot at his near post.

It was a good job fromus. The players did well andthe only thing I would criti-cize is that we didnt scoremore goals, United man-ager David Moyes told SkySports.

We were a bit sloppyin the rst ve minutesbut after that played reallywell.

United received an-other boost when Scotlandinternational mid elderDarren Fletcher, battling achronic bowel condition, came off the bench for hisrst match appearance sincelate December last year.

The cheers from Unit-ed fans for Fletcher were

part-drowned out by theboos from the home endthat greeted former Villaforward Ashley Young.

Villa, who beganbrightly but carried littlethreat once they had fallenbehind, have won just one

of their last 36 PremierLeague games againstUnited.

Nathan Dyer scoredfor Swansea City but suf-fered a suspected fracturedright ankle in the 1-1 drawat Norwich City.

Dyer icked pastJohn Ruddy on 12 min-utes but was carried off ona stretcher late in the rsthalf after a challenge withSebastien Bassong.

We have to wait acouple of days for an X-rayand a scan, and we all crossour ngers to hope it is notthat bad, said Swanseamanager Michael Laudrup. That will overshadoweverything else. It is just agame of football.
