Did you know that June 20 – the first day of summer – is National eGiving Day?

Our Lady of the Snow can take particular joy in this celebration, as the response to eGiving

in our church has been wonderful.

To build on this success, I am setting a Nation-al eGiving Day Challenge. My goal is for Our

Lady of the Snow families to put envelopes on a permanent summer vacation and make the

switch to eGiving. This is especially important in the summer months, when many families may be out of town some weekends and Our

Lady of the Snow does not receive their enve-lopes. It’s easy for people to forget to catch

up once they’re back, and our weekly offerto-ry can fluctuate as a result – making it harder to predict how much we will have to sustain

our year-round ministries. The more families who welcome the beginning of summer by taking this National eGiving Day Challenge, the more consistency and predicta-ble our offertory will be month after month – and this will help us do even more to spread

Christ’s love throughout the community.

Being part of this challenge is simple: Visit www.faithdirect.net and use our church code:

NY235

Thank you for your continued support of our parish family with your time and talents as

well as treasure! God Bless You

A Message from Father Charles Fink Page 3

My dear parish family, When Peter Kreeft decided to write Prayer for Begginners, he built it around the teaching of Brother Lawrence of the Resurrection and that humble Carmelite’s little mas-terpiece, The Practice of the Presence of God. Now Kreeft has written a new book, this one called How to Be Holy: First Steps in Becoming a Saint, and bases this one largely on another small spiritual classic, Fr. Jean Pierre de Caussade’s Abandonment to Divine Providence. Kreeft begins by focusing on Fr. de Caussade’s reflections on Romans 8:28, St. Paul’s assertion that for those who love God, all things work for the good. Philosopher that he is, Kreeft demonstrates how and why this must be so and what the implications are for us, especially when we are in the throes of life’s trials. Peter Kreeft isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, as he is more a thinker than a feeler, more interested in informing than in touching us emotionally. He is a master of aphorism, but he goes on to explain what he means and why he means is, why it makes sense. His isn’t the world of sound-bites, two-minute analyses, or soaring rhetoric designed to move us to tears or applause, but he writes clearly and penetratingly, always in an illuminating way, often in a memorable way. This is the month of the Sacred Heart, one of the great Catholic symbols of God’s never-failing, unchanging love for us. That love, along with God’s power and wisdom, is the reason we ought to “abandon ourselves to Divine Providence,” surrender to God, trust always that if we love Him as best we can and are sorry for our sins, then He will make sure everything in our lives works for the good, especially the ultimate good of bringing us to eternal life. I know I must seem to spend an inordinate amount of time recommending books and urging you to read, but that’s because we need to feed our minds and hearts and souls with nourishing, life-sustaining food, given the toxic atmosphere in which we live. We have constantly to work at off-setting the deleterious effects of breathing in all the poisons spewed out by the media and our increasingly secular, materialistic, hedonistic, and nihil-istic society. The Sacred Heart of Jesus should be our comfort and strength each day but will be so only if that Heart is as real to us as all the things that impact our senses as we make our way thourgh life. Try one of Peter Kreeft’s little books, one of those mentioned above or Before I Go. All are short, all filled with wisdom and love, all designed to bring us closer to the Heart of Jesus and keep is safe in His embrace. With love and prayers, Fr. Charles Fink

STEWARDSHIP FINANCIAL REPORT For the week of June 5-6, 2016

The Mercy of God and For-giveness Words to ponder and live from Pope Francis on to-day’s Gospel ,The Unforgiving servant, in Misericordiae Vultus (#9): “This parable contains a pro-found teaching for all of us. Je-sus affirms that mercy is not only

an action of the Father, it becomes a cri-terion for ascertaining who his true chil-dren are. Pardoning offences becomes the clearest expression of merciful love, and for us Christians it is an imperative from which we cannot excuse ourselves.

At times how hard it seems to forgive! And yet pardon is the instrument placed into our fragile hands to attain serenity of heart. To let go of anger, wrath, vio-lence, and revenge are necessary condi-tions to living joyfully.

He (God) does not limit himself merely to affirming his love, but makes it visible and tangible shown in daily living. The mercy of God is his loving concern for each one of us.

He feels responsible; that is, he desires our wellbeing and he wants to see us happy, full of joy, and peaceful. This is the path which the merciful love of Christians must also travel. As the Father loves, so do his children. Just as he is merciful, so we are called to be merciful to each oth-er”

WHAT CATHOLICS BELIEVE; WHY THEY BELIEVE IT

1. WHY DO WE BELIEVE IN GOD?

Ever since the creation of the world his eternal power and divine nature, in-visible though they are, have been understood and seen through the things he has made (Romans 1:20). Rare is the person who has not looked up at a starry sky or a sunset or the sea and thought: This is the work of a Supreme Artist. The beauty of the world has al-ways spoken to people of something or someone beyond this world. Likewise the orderliness of the universe, the compatibility and complementarities of its parts, has induced many to conclude that it is the product of intelligent design. Ironically, science, which is only possible because the universe exhibits such law-like order, has been the cause of much unbelief in the last two centuries. It is argued, e.g., that evolution accounts for all the things former ages in their igno-rance attributed to God. This line of reasoning, however, does not really bear much scrutiny. Evolution, the theory that the chance interaction of material elements, has re-sulted in the world we know, may be able to explain how “A” has turned into “B” and “B” into “C”, but it has nothing whatever to say about why “A” exists in the first place, nor why in the first place is such as to have the remarkable capacity to turn into “B”. In fact, scientists tell us that at their beginning, just before the so-called Big-Bang, the constituents of the universe were so finely tuned that if any one of them had been different in the least degree, the world as we know it, includ-ing human life, could never have come to be. In other words, the universe gives the appearance of being a meticulously prepared recipe. Think of the material world as a deck of cards. It is true that many games of chance can be played with this deck, and chance can explain why we are dealt one hand rather than another, but the chances are strictly limited and circumscribed by the fact that the cards themselves have been carefully designed and have very spe-cific characteristics. It may be that God chose to use evolution as the mechanism for producing most of what we see in the universe, but evolution alone cannot explain the exist-ence of the universe in the first place, nor its capacity from the start to evolve into the masterpiece we behold when we look at anything from the cosmos as a whole to a single living cell. It is all God-created, God-designed.

Now and at the Hour of

Our Death A Catholic guide to

End-of-Life Decision-Making

Continue from May 8th—But as is the case at times with life-sustaining treatments, medically assisted nutrition and hydration, although constituting a form of ordinary care, may, under very specific circum-stances, be deemed excessively burdensome and of little or no benefit to the patient. The most common case of this is when the patient enters into the dying process and the body can no longer properly assimi-late food and water, even through a tube. When death is imminent (within days) or in rare instances when a gastric feeding tube may cause intractable side effects such as severe agitation, physical dis-comfort, aspiration into the lungs, or severe infec-tion, any foreseeable benefits of maintaining the tube are likely outweighed in light of the attending burdens, in this case, other means of providing nutri-tion or if not feasible, at least hydration, even if min-imally, must be carefully considered and employed if possible. When medically assisted nutrition and hydra-tion is withheld or withdrawn for licit reasons, death occurs as a result of the underlying disease, not through starvation or dehydration. It is never permissible to remove a feeding tube, or any form of life-sustaining treatment, based on a belief that the patient’s life not longer holds va-le or with the intention to terminate the patient’s life. —by the Catholic Bishops of New York State

A little humor from Father Fink

Supposedly true story: A man in a rural area called the town office to request the removal of a “Deer Crossing” sign. His reason? He said too many deer were getting hit by cars at that spot; it wasn’t a good place for them to cross.

BRICK MEMORIAL GARDEN

Maybe you have noticed the work we have done in front of the Mother Church. If you would like to memorialize a loved

one , a family member or add your family name, please stop by the rectory office

during business hours. The bricks are $100 each.
