Parish Stewardship

STEWARDSHIP SPOTLIGHT - FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT December3,2017

When is enough, enough? Last week was Thanksgiving, so we are supposed to be well into the Christmas Holiday Season. We have survived

Black Friday and Cyber Monday with all of the hype and hurry for buying gifts for those whom we love. In the midst of all of this giving, stop and

think about what you would give, how far you would go, to make those whom you love happy. In thinking about this, sure, we all have budgets to

be mindful of. But if money were not an object, in thinking about gifts for your loved ones, what would be your frame of mind? Would you calcu-

late how little you could give to cause happiness – what the minimum gift needs to be and then shoot for that? No, we would sacrifice our own

happiness for the happiness of our loved ones.

Now consider how we respond to God’s immeasurable gifts to us, starting with life itself followed by the promise of eternal life with Him bought

with the Cross of Christ. Then there are the gifts of loved ones along with our talents and abilities and the

monetary rewards that come from those.

Yet, when we ponder how to return God’s blessings back to Him, do we think about how much we can give or how little of our time, talent, and

treasure we feel will meet His request? For example, the minimum obligation for mass is Sundays and holy days. What is our disposition on at-

tending weekday mass on occasion? We know that we should pray. Are we looking at our watches to put in the minimal time, or do we fully com-

mune with God at the expense of our leisure time? Do we ever read the Bible outside of the readings at mass? Do we give of our time and talent to

the Church and our brothers and sisters in need? And, of course, do we return any of our treasure to God through His Church and His people? If we

answer that we have no room for this, then our use of time, talent, and treasure should not reveal otherwise.

Why in the world would we short God with what is due to Him? Perhaps it is because we do not read His Word or pray enough to hear in our

hearts the sorrow of a loved one whose love has not been returned in a generous manner.

As we continue to spiral down the commercial vortex of Christmas, let’s all step back and pray and think about how we are

responding to God’s love in our lives. He wants us to love Him with our whole being. When is enough, enough? Have a holy and happy Advent

Season. Better pack in the goodness, because it is only three weeks long this year with Christmas falling on a Monday.

When the Catholic Church celebrates the Season of Advent each year, she makes know to the world the ancient

expectation of the Messiah. In the celebration of Christ’s death and martyrdom, we are united to his desire, “He must increase, but I must decrease.” (CCC #524)
