    The Civil Services Examinationis one of most arduouscompetitive examination in thecountry. Nearly five to six lakhstudents vie for only 700-900vacancies, in an evaluationprocess comprising three stagesand stretching almost over ayear. The 'PreliminaryExamination', the first of thethree, is akin to a gateway whichhalts the onward march ofmajority of the aspirants. Theremaining 12000-15000candidates who are left in thefray, battle it out in the next twostages, the 'Main Examination'and the 'Personality test'. ThePreliminary examination of2011 was in the real sense awatershed in this process ofselection as it introduced theaptitude test .The first paper ongeneral studies (GeneralStudies Paper- I) continues withalmost the same syllabus albeitwith the nature of questionsbecoming more applicationoriented. However the GeneralStudies Paper II whichincorporated the aptitude testhas brought the real change.Colloquially christened asCSAT, this paper now aims toevaluate the aptitude ofcandidates by means ofobjective type multiple choicequestions. Unlike the oldscheme, where a candidatecould opt for any of theoptionals from a variety ofpermissible academic subjects

    for the G.S. Paper II, theaptitude test paper is nowcommon and compulsory forall candidates. This providesa uniform platform forevaluation and also a levelplaying field for all aspirants.But was this the only reasonfor bringing this radicalchange? The CSAT was theculmination ofrecommendations made byseveral experts and specialistcommittees endeavouring tomake the process ofselection a morecontemporary andmeaningful one. The objectivewas to bring a change in the

    qualities to be evaluated; frominformation that could beacquired by rote to knowledgeapplication and abilitiesreflective of a person's aptitude.If one is to go by the paper of2011, then one must admit thatthese objectives have largelybeen met. What are the areasfrom which the aptitude is to beevaluated? In the G.S. Paper IIof 2011, nearly 50% of questionsfigured from two broad areas,'comprehension passages', and'data interpretation'. The topicsof 'basic numeracy','logicalreasoning and analytical ability','general mental ability', 'decisionmaking, and 'English languagecomprehension skills', eachcontributed nearly 8-10% ofquestions. There were overall 80questions of 2.5 marks each with

    1/3 rd negative marks for eachwrong answer. A unique area ofevaluation, perhaps not figuringin other aptitude tests, is thesection on 'decision making'.Each of the eight questions in thissection, present a differentsituational problem, where thecandidate has to take the bestpossible decision within theconstraints and ethico-legal-administrative dilemmas. Theapparent objective is to evaluate,whether a candidate identifiesand believes in the values andprinciples which are embeddedin the matrix of the situation. Andif he does believe, then to whatextent. What does it take to besuccessful in this test? Hard workalways pays and so it will, in thisexamination also. Sharpeningcomprehension andcommunication skills is likely tobe doubly beneficial as two

    different set of questions testthese skills. For preparation ofareas like 'basic numeracy anddata interpretation'- a scoringarea- revisiting what was learntin school and solving a varietyof questions is a must.Considering the diverse topicsassessed in this test, a strategicplanning is essential to identifythe areas of one's own strengthand to work upon on one'sweaknesses. Such planning isequally important during theexamination. There, one hasidentify and solve quickly thosequestions which one is deft atand confident of, At the sametime it is important to avoid orto keep for the last, thequestions which are timesapping or difficult tocomprehend.
