Build BackgroundHelp children use their knowledge of baseball to visualize the story. Build interest by asking a question such as the following: What baseball teams have you heard of? What team do you like best? Read the title and author and talk about the cover photo. Explain that the Brooklyn Dodgers were a famous team that played at Ebbets Field, a ball park in Brooklyn, New York.

Introduce the TextGuide children through the text, noting important ideas and nonfi ction features. Help with unfamiliar language so they can read the text successfully. Give special attention to target vocabulary. Here are some suggestions:

Page 2: Explain that Brooklyn is part of New York City. Suggested language: Turn to page 2 of this book. The caption tells us that this is a photo of the Brooklyn Dodgers. How is this photo different from photos of teams today?

Page 3: Explain that the events in this book are organized by their dates. Turn to page 3. The caption says that this is Ebbets Field. Let’s read the fi rst sentence: The Dodgers began playing baseball way back in 1890. What other date can you fi nd on this page? That’s right: In 1912, the Dodgers moved to a new park called Ebbets Field.

Page 4: Read the caption. Point out that the Dodgers had many cheering fans who hurried to see them play. Have children fi nd the words hurried and cheered. What team would you hurry to see?

Pages 5-6: Point out that captions can give clues about information in the text. What do the captions on these pages tell you?

Page 7: What does this caption tell you? Have you ever had to stand in one position for a long time? Why?

Pages 8-9: Read the captions. What do you think these fi nal pages of the book will be about?

Now turn back to the beginning and read to fi nd out why the Brooklyn Dodgers were so famous.

ReadAs the children read The Brooklyn Dodgers, observe them carefully. Guide them as needed, using language that supports their problem-solving ability.

Remind children to use the Visualize Strategy and to picture what is happening as they read.

Discuss and Revisit the TextPersonal ResponseInvite children to share their personal responses to the text. Suggested language: What information did you fi nd most interesting? What more would you like to know about The Brooklyn Dodgers?

Ways of ThinkingAs you discuss the text, help children understand these points:

Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text

• The Brooklyn Dodgers were an old, famous team.

• Jackie Robinson was one of their best players.

• The Dodgers are now in Los Angeles.

• Baseball fans have always cheered their favorite teams.

• Baseball teams change over time.

• Captions help to explain the photos.

• The photos contain a lot of visual information.

• The last color photo contrasts with the others.

Choices for Further Support• Fluency Invite children to choose a passage from the text to read aloud. Suggest that

they try reading a couple of pages as if they were narrating a movie about the Brooklyn Dodgers.

• Comprehension Based on your observations of the children’s reading and discussion, revisit parts of the text to clarify or extend comprehension. Remind children to go back to the text to support their ideas.

• Phonics/Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and word parts, using examples from the text. Remind children that to form the past tense of verbs that end in y, they must drop the y and add ied, as in hurry/hurried on page 4. Provide other examples, such as worry, marry, and carry.

Writing about ReadingVocabulary PracticeHave children complete the Vocabulary questions on BLM 17.1.

RespondingHave children complete the vocabulary activities on page 11. Remind them to answer the Word Teaser on p. 12. (Answer: practice)

Reading Nonfi ctionNonfiction Features: Captions and Photos Remind children that nonfi ction has many features to help readers fi nd and understand important information. Captions and photos are two of these features. Explain that captions can be short phrases, as in this book, or longer sentences. Captions tell what a photo or map or diagram is about. Reading the captions in a nonfi ction book is a good way to preview the book before reading the main text.

Photos are another important source of information. They often add information that is not in the text. Have children look again at the photo on page 7. Ask what information they can learn from the photo (the price of tickets, the clothes people wore). Then have children choose a photo in the book and write a longer caption for the photograph, based on what they see in the picture.

Writing Prompt: Thinking Beyond the TextHave children write a response to the prompt on page 6.

Assessment Prompts• Which words on page 9 help the reader understand the meaning of extra?

• What does the word roared mean in this sentence? The fans clapped and cheered and roared.

The Brooklyn Dodgers Thinking Beyond the Text

Think about the question below. Then write your answer in one paragraph.

On page 4, the book says that fans “cheered so loudly for the team that people could hear them from many blocks away!” Why do you think fans liked the Brooklyn Dodgers so much? Why did so many people line up to watch the games?

Do you like to watch baseball games? Have you heard of the

Brooklyn Dodgers? The Dodgers were a famous baseball team

that played in New York a long time ago.

The Dodgers began playing baseball way back in 1890. When

they played at home, the baseball park was very crowded.

Soon the team needed more space for their fans. In 1912, the

Dodgers moved to a new park called Ebbets Field.

More and more fans hurried to Ebbets Field to watch the

Dodgers play. They cheered so loudly for the team that people

could hear them from many blocks away!
