From the From the From the From the Pastor's PenPastor's PenPastor's PenPastor's Pen: : : : Parish Initiative on Joy of the Gospel - continued
As we continue to unfolded the Parish Initiative on the Joy of the Gospel, last Sunday the ministry heads and some well wishers, who make up this committee met and suggested to me from their general observations these new opportunities that we need to focus on to make the joy of the Gospel in our community effective, not forgetting what we are already doing. The first goal of this entire initiative is the Personal Encounter with God. This begins with knowledge about God. We are going to approach this through making our parish a more welcoming parish or family. Also we are going to continue enriching ourselves with the knowledge about God through the various teachings, spiritual books, Homily during Mass, retreats and Missions. These are going to be done on various levels and to different groups in our parish; like the youth, young adults, children, etc... The second level to approach this initiative that we came up with, is to encourage attendance of prayers through the different prayer groups. It is through prayer and sharing that we can become great witnesses of Christ. The prayer groups in our parish include; Devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, Bible groups, Legion of Mary, Cursillo, and others. If these do not suit our schedules, we will change the times or create more. Lastly, to promote more activities that are going to bring us together like: Movie nights, picnics, Book clubs, Opera nights, etc. These also help us to encounter Christ on a personal level. More information will always be in the bulletin, website, Facebook and other media. This is the beginning of the first year of implementing the Encounter the Joy of the Gospel. Remember, when one is enriched in the love of Christ, that is when he or she can share with others. Therefore, we don’t need so much to talk about God but to allow people to feel how God lives within us, that’s our work. The long term goal of all this is to change the entire world, so that the true peace and Joy of Christ prevails.

Prayer to St. Joseph
O Holy St. Joseph,
loving guardian of Jesus and Mary,
Assist us by your prayers

Ask of Jesus that special grace,

Volunteers needed to help SWAG fundraising!
SWAG Youth Ministry would like to invite all parishioners 16 years and older to volunteer to work concessions at UVA football games, concerts, etc. This is a great way for the kids to raise money for different activities (including their Uganda trip) and doesn’t require a consistent commitment to work. We sign up for events when we have volunteers.

SAINTS PETER AND PAUL CATHOLIC CHURCH, PALMYRA, VA JULY 26-27, 2014
A great big congratulations to our own Council’s Robert
Toepfert for being named and honored as a Charlottesville Home Town Hero. This is a recognition well deserved to a member who is always there when called upon or there when he sees a need. Our council is proud to have him as a member and one that never says no when called upon.
His honor is an example of the backbone of charity, the watchword of the Knights of Columbus and always number one as a priority. Some statistics just from last year alone with 75 percent of the order’s council’s reporting.
Cash money donated by the councils was over $170 MILLION DOLLARS and hours worked were over 70.5 MILLION HOURS. That is 421, 071 more hours then last year and the value of the volunteer hours at $22.55 per hour is a whopping $1.6 BILLION for service. Your council last year reported 80,039 hours of service to your church, family, community, youth, culture of life and ourselves.
Just a few things the Knights of Columbus were involved in last year, if not physically we contributed through our council. The hurricane in the Philippines, tornados in Oklahoma, floods in Alberta, shootings in Newtown, CT. and many more tragedies around the world.
Locally, we had Coats for Kids, Food for Families, Special Olympics, Wheelchair Initiative, the clinic we built in Uganda that will help thousands over the years, nursing homes, the shelter for abused moms and kids, a camp for children with degenerative diseases, Scouting, highway clean ups, supporting a Cloistered order of nuns, fund raising April through September to help support these charities. We also have our blood donors and members on every ministry the Church has.
Again this is but a small portion of our commitment to others. We honor our own with Young Man, Young Lady of the Year as well as Family and Knight of the Year. We enjoy our social events and dinners with camaraderie for all.
We are your Knights of Columbus. Our motto for this year is"
“Be Faith in Action”
We always have been and will always strive to be.
The next meeting is Monday August 4th at 6:00pm.

July 22 is the feast day of St. Mary Magdalen. Bishop Ricken, who celebrated Mass on EWTN today, told us in his homily that Mary Magdalen was the first evangelizer. When she recognized the risen Lord at the empty tomb, he sent her to take the good news to His brothers, the apostles.
The New Evangelization movement is in full swing everywhere in the world and has finally come to our diocese and parish, too. All are invited to participate. So, check the web page and bulletin or call the office to find out how you can become part of this exciting mission.
“But,” you say, “I don’t know how to evangelize!” It’s easier than you think and you can get a lot of help by watching EWTN or reading books about the Saints or recent converts who are eager and willing to share their experience, set you on fire, and teach you how to share your faith. Learn from the experts!
You can find EWTN on Comcast channel 291, Dish Network channel 261 and DirecTV channel 370. So, for inspiration, information, education, consolation, etc. go to EWTN!
If you are interested in the “Truth in the News” you can start with EWTN News Nightly which airs Mondays through Fridays at 6PM and 9PM (half-hour shows) and Raymond Arroyo’s World Over Live (one hour) which airs on Thursdays at 8PM with repeats on Fridays at 1AM and 9AM and Sundays at 7PM. If you’d like to find out what draws so many people to the Catholic Church, check out Marcus Grodi’s program The Journey Home which airs Mondays at 8PM with repeats on Tuesdays at 1AM and Fridays at 1PM. If Hollywood is more your kind of thing, check out Mother Dolores Hart’s story “From Hollywood to Holy Vows” which will air again on July 26 at 9:30PM.
I will try to introduce you to the many different and exciting programs in future installments but to begin with I would suggest that you try to use the time you spend in front of the TV set to fill yourself with good news so that you can share it with others. I think, people are tired of getting nothing but bad news and trashy programs that stress us out even more than we already are.
So, break the mold, broaden your horizon, come out of your shell and start living life the way God intended us to and EXPERIENCE THE JOY OF LIVING AND GIVING!
May God bless our efforts to change the world!

Pregnancy Centers in Urgent Need of Nurse Volunteers!
We ask for one 1.5 - 2 hour shift per month on either Tuesday or Thursday evening. The nurse completes the medical intake form with the client. Every volunteer feels so blessed as they work with our clients, and believe they receive so much more than they give. It is putting your values into action and being the loving arms of Christ to a woman facing an unplanned pregnancy offering her acceptance, love and hope.
