The Eucharist, Nourishment For All

Today’s First Reading prefigures the multiplication of loaves and fishes that Jesus performs in today’s Gospel. The prophet Elisha performs a miraculous multiplication of loaves to feed one hundred people who were with him. As in today’s Gospel there is a surplus, more than enough. Today’s Responsorial Psalm is a celebration of God’s bountiful providence. As the miracle of the loaves and fish symbolizes God’s ever provident care, so this psalm praises His daily care for us, body and soul, never with-holding His compassion. Hence the psalmist’s attitude of profound trust. In today’s Second Reading God is calling us to a great dignity, to be His children. He forgives our sin and heals our brokenness. We respond by loving Him and living that love toward others. Our life-style proclaims His mercy, by living with humility, gentleness and patience. We do not allow superficial things to divide us. God’s Holy Spirit is a unifier, binding us together in the Faith. This love is what inspires others to join the Faith. In today’s Gospel we leave St Mark and switch over to St John, until September . Today St John descr ibes the miracle of the multiplication of the five barley loaves (barley was the food of the poor) and two fish. It was all the little boy had. He gave all to Jesus in total trust and in great generosity. Jesus transformed this great act of self-giving into something greater. The little boy’s gift became enough to feed well over 5,000 people. This small gift, given with enormous love, in the Lord’s hands, produced nour-ishment and repose for thousands. This is the prefigurement of the Sacrament of the Eucharist. For after Jesus gave thanks, blessed, broke and shared with the crowds, there was enough left to feed the 12 tribes of Israel (12 baskets), just as the Eucharist nourishes all the tribes of the new Israel, the Church. May we always be nourished with this Heavenly Food.

“Walka (W) – Fight” “W” Hour was the codename for the

date and time that began Operation Tempest in German occupied Warsaw, and hence the Warsaw Uprising. The exact time was 5:00 PM, 1 August 1944. The biggest, civilian uprising was a heroic and tragic 63-day struggle to liberate World War II Warsaw from Nazi/German occupation. The Polish people were still willing to fight and not give up. Undertaken by the Home Army (the Polish resistance movement), at the time Allied troops were breaking through the Normandy defenses and the Red Army was standing at the line of the Vistula River. The uprising was intended to last a few days, until Soviet forces arrived; however, this never happened. The Polish forces had to fight almost without any outside assistance. Initially the battle raged throughout most of Warsaw, but after a short time it became confined to districts in the West of the town. The key factor in the battle was the massive imbalance of weapons between the two sides. The German side was extremely well equipped, the Polish side had, initially, barely enough ammunition for a few days. Some areas fought for a full 63 days before an agreed capitulation took place. The losses on the Polish side; 15,200 insurgents killed and missing, (the youngest solider only being 12-years old), 5,000 wounded, 15,000 sent to POW camps. Among civilians 200,000 were dead, and approximately 700,000 expelled from the city. Approximately 55,000 civilians were sent to concen-tration camps, including 13,000 to Auschwitz. Material losses were estimated at 10,455 buildings, 923 historical buildings (94 percent), 25 churches, 14 libraries including the National Library, 145 elementary/ high schools, Warsaw University and Polytechnic buildings, and most of the monuments. Almost a million inhabitants lost all of their possessions. During communist rule in Poland (1945–1989), any commemora-tion of the Uprising was banned. Since 1989, democratic and independent Poland honors the memory of the Uprising as one of the most heroic and tragic events in the history of the nation and of Europe in the twentieth century. Every year on August 1 at 5:00 PM alarm signals and sirens are turned on. Public transport, buses, tram-ways, many cars and pedestrians stop in silence. warsawuprising.com

Prayer Teams Ministry Members Needed!

We are excited to announce that St. John’s will be beginning a weekly Praise and Worship starting in September. These nights will consist of Praise & Worship music led by a Music Ministry team, a brief topic by a guest speaker, more Praise & Worship, and closing with special intercessory prayer teams. These prayer teams allow an individual to go to a “prayer team” and request to be prayed over for a special intention, whether it is one of healing, a personal struggle, peace, praise, etc. Members of these teams are trained and educated on the gifts of the Holy Spirit. This Praise & Worship is come as you are and about experiencing a new way of prayer and praise.

The program offers a balance of indoor and out-door activities, restful and active movement activities, and a varied curriculum encompassing faith formation, language arts, reading readiness, art, STEM, physical education, math, science, and social awareness. July is Natural Family Planning Month designated by the National Council of Catholic Bishops.

In July, the Respect Life Ministry shines a light on Natural Family Planning Month . As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Humanae Vitae this year, we take another look at NFP with its many benefits, both physical and spiritual.

Today's NFP is not your grandmother's rhythm method. Fol-lowing the biological clues in our bodies and using our natural rhythms, without chemicals, we can achieve above 97% suc-cess in delaying pregnancy. It is also used by couples who struggle with infertility and wish to conceive a child.

For married couples who want to be generously open to life, NFP is God's design for the family. Helpful resources are In the CD kiosk at the back of the church, including Dignity Health's Schedule of Introductory Sessions that are held every month in Sacramento.
