Slower speeds, but faster sales!parade singers today-held astranglehold grip on the bestselling field as far back as1952 - Frankie Laine, GuyMitchell a n d the inimitableJohnnie Ray.

Unknown here the previousyear, the "Ultra Violent" Ray hitthe British music scene like athunderbolt, and before the e._d ofthe year had established a fan-tastic army of fans, who almosttore apart any place he appeared.

Johrmie's discs sold like the pro-verbial hot cakes, and his success in'52 with Cry," Little WhiteCloud," " Brokenhearted " and

Please Mr. Sun " aroused greatinterest in powerful dramatic ballads.

Throughout the year, pop musictastes changed very little. Happy-go-lucky, bouncy jump numbers ofthe Guy Mitchell variety ("PawnshopOn The Corner," "Always Room AtOur House," etc.) were nationwidefavourites, and such songs broughtthe house down when performed byGuy at the London Palladium.

Frankie Leine's successes werefurthered by such early '52 hits as

Gandy Dancers Ball." " Rock OfGibraltar " and " I'm Gonna LiveTill I Die," and other " old faith-fuls " with big hits on their handsincluded Nat " King " Cole (" Un-forgettable "): Doris Day ("A GuyIs A Guy "); Lea Paul and MaryFord (" Meet Mr. Callaghan "), andJo Stafford ("A -Round The Corner").

Fisher hitsNext to Johnnie Ray, undoubtedly

the most impressive newcomer of theyear was handsome young EddieFisher, who sang his way into homesall over the country with " I'mYours." "Anytime," "Tell Me Why,"" Never " and the British song"'Lady Of Spain."

Kay Starr made her mark with" Wheel Of Fortune," Ella Mae,Morse clicked with " BlacksmithBlues," Rosemary Clooney notched" Botch -A -Me," and pianist SirHubert Pimm turned out one of theyear's biggest novelty song hits-" IWanna Say Hello."

By the early months of 1952.interest in pop music had reachedunbelievable prpportions and theneed for a newspaper devoted exclu-sively to the pop industry wasbecoming more and more obvious.

Thus on March 7, there appearedon the news-stands the very firstedition of the " New MusicalExpress "-lat4 to become thelargest -selling weekly musical pub-lication in the world. An immediate point of interest was

the U.S. best seller charts, andrealising their importance, the NMEpioneered the first hit parade (basedon dealers' returns) ever to be pub-lished in Britain-on November 14.

Britain's first Top Twelve read:1, Al Martino's Here In MyHeart "; 2, Jo Stafford's " YouBelong To Me "; 3, Nat Cole's" Somewhere Along The Way "; 4,Bing Crosby's " Isle Of Innesfree ";5, Guy Mitchell's " Feet Up"; 6,Rosemary Clooney's " Half AsMuch " ; 7, Vera Lynn's " Forget -Me -Not " and Frankie Laine's " HighNoon " ; 8, Doris Day and FrankieLaine's " Sugar Bush " duet, and RayMartin's " Blue Tango "; 9, VeraLynn's " Homing Waltz "; 10, VeraLynn's "Auf Wiedersehen" 11, MaxBygraves' " Cowpuncher's 'Cantata "and Mario Lanza's " Because You'reMine "; and 12, Johnnie Ray's" Walkin' My Baby Back Home."

The list is self-explanatory-withone major exception. Had the chartsbeen inaugurated some months

earlier, the top disc would most cer-tainly have been the still -remembered

Auf Wiedeqehen," Vera Lynn'sbiggest -ever hit. -

A best seller here, it also becamethe first British disc to top theU.S. charts-and went on to passthe million sales mark:Martino, Ray, Crosby; Kay Starr

and Doris Day notched more hitsbefore the end of the year, andWinifred Atwell made her first chartappearance with " Britannia Rag "-following.on -the success of " Di)deBoogie" add '1 Jubilee Rag." A newBritish representative in the chartswas Tony Brent. with " Walkin' ToMissouri."

Band boomBig hands were big business in 1952

-in dance halls, on radio and disc.Eager not to be left out of the popmusic boom, the BBC took a giantstep by launching the star-studdedShow Band, a resident orchestraunder the baton of Cyril Stapleton.Interest in the group-and the widevariety of sounds and styles it pro-duced-was unmistakable, and pavedthe way for a personal appearancetour early the following year.

Aided by composer -arrangerRonald Binge, Mantovani perfectedhis unique " tumbling strings "sound and scored a mammothorchestral hit with "Charmaine."A great new orchestra leader hademerged.During the year, we also paid our

last respects to two other great menof music-Debroy Somers died inMay, and America's jazz giantFletcher Henderson passed away onDecember 30. Disc fans were sad-dened, too, by the death of singerSteve Conway on April 25.

The recording world was under-goin$ radical changes, and LPs werestarting to get a grip on collectors. It became obvious that "slow speeds"were here to stay when EMI releasedthe very first 45 r.p.m. singles inOctober . . . a new -size disc thathas since become very fashionable. It was learned, too, that the famousPhilips organisation would launchtheir own disc label in 1953.

London Palladium first appearancesincluded top -of -the -bill dates by suchas Frankie Laine, Les Paul and MaryFord, Jo Stafford, Billy Daniels, andPeter Lind Hayes with Mary Healey.Lena Horne, Dennis Day, SophieTucker, Jimmy Durante, The DeepRiver Boys, musical comedy starsBetty Hutton and Dolores Gray and.the then unknown Jane Morgan alsoappeared there, alongside such Britishartists as Winifred Atwell, Max

VERA LINN with her Gold Discfor " Auf Wiedersehen ".

Bygraves, Billy Cotton. Peter Sellersand The Beverley Sisters.

Peruvian singer, Yma Sumac, thegirl with the multi -octave rangewhose discs were popularised by JackJackson on his Record Roundup "radio show, came here for concerts.

American showman Cab Callowaycame here to star in " Porgy AndBess," which gave us an opportunityto enjoy such famous Gershwin songsas " Summertime." " It Ain't Neces-sarily So " and " I Got Plenty OfNuttin'." The U.S. also sent us

Call Me Madam," the stage showwhich produced " It's A Lovely DayToday " and " You're Just In Love,"while Jean Carson and Johnny Bran-don starred in the British musical,

Love From Judy."The year's .big filmusicals included

"Aeron Slick From Punkin Crick "(Dinah Shore), "About Face " (Gor-don Macrae), "Because You're Mine"(Mario Lanza), " Just For You "(Bing Crosby). " Lovely To LookAt " (Howard Keel), " Meet DannyWilson " (Frank Sinatra). " RainbowRound My Shoulder " (Billy Danielsand Frankie Laine), " Singing In TheRain " (Debbie Reynolds and GeneKelly), " Skirts Ahoy" (Debbie Rey-nolds and Billy Eckstine), " With ASong In My Heart " (the biographyof Jane Froman), " Glory Alley "(Louis Armstrong) and two moreDean Martin and Jerry Lewiscomedies-" Jumpin' Jacks " and" The Stooge."

1953 Chart ToppersL MARTINO was still at the

head of the best sellers at theturn of the year, and his successwon him a variety season thefollowing year at the Palladium.Four other international stars whotopped the charts during 1953 alsoappeared there ... Frankie Laine,Kay Starr, Guy Mitchell andEddie Fisher.

Laine's hit parade consistencythroughout the year was spectacular,to say the least. He topped thesellers on three occasions-with" Hey, Joe," "Answer Me " and the -amazing million seller "I Believe,"which set up an all-time record byremaining in the No. 1 slot for 18weeks ! Don't forget, either, that onOctober 23, Frankie had three discsin the top four-" Hey, Joe " (1)," Where The Wind Blows " (3) and" I Believe " (4). A week later,"Answer Me " crashed into thecharts at No. 3 !

Other U.S. stars to top the chartsin '53 were Kay Starr (" Comes -Along -A -Love "), Jo Stafford (" YouBelong To Me "), Eddie Fisher(" Outside Of Heaven " and " I'mWalkin' Beside You "), Guy Mitchell(" Look At That Girl " and " SheWears Red Feathers ") and PerryComo (" Don't Let The Stars Get InYour Eyes ").

But the Americans didn't have itall their own way, and on April 10.a British disc occupied the top spotfor the first time-The Stargazers'

Broken Wings." The feat wasemulated on three further occasions

before the end of the yea r-LitaRoza's " Doggie In The Window,"Mantovani's "Moulin Rouge Theme"and David Whitfield's "Answer Me."

Many new British stars began toshine in '53. There was Tony Brent, who had three discs in the sellerst" Walkin' To Missouri," " Make ItSoon and Got You On MyMind ") in January; Jimmy Young, who scored with " Eternally "; Wini-fred Atwell with " Coronation Rag,"" Flirtation Waltz," " Five FingerBoogie " and her mammoth -sellingChristmas disc (later a million seller)" Let's Have A Party "; DickieValentine ("Broken Wings," "GoldenCoach" and "All The Time AndEverywhere"), and Joan Regan("Ricochet").

Vera Lynn re -appeared with " TheWindsor Waltz," while three bigBritish instrumental hits were TedHeath's " Hot Toddy," Ray Martin's" Swedish Rhapsody " and FrankChacksfield's " Limelight."

The latter disc was also a bighit in the States, and Chackstieldfollowed it up later in the yearwith a second Stateside chart entry-" Ebb Tide."Early in the year, the NME's first

Popularity Poll won honours for LitaRoza and Dickie Valentine (topsingers), Ted Heath (top big band),the Johnny Dankworth Seven (topsmall group) and tenorist RonnieScott (musician of the year). Later,we inaugurated the NME RecordAwards, with Tony Brent (" HaveYou Heard ? ") and Frank Chocks -field (" Limelight ") voted thea inners by a judging panel.

Kenton tripTwo more NME promotions worth

remembering were the concert seriesstarring pianist Teddy Wilson inSeptember and a giant airlift toBrussels, where fans heard the StanKenton Band the same month.

Biggest surprise of the year wasFrank Sinatra's poorly supportedprovincial concert tour in June. Hecame here at a time when his popu-larity-for reasons never reallyascertained-was waning. But it stillcame as a shock when box-officefigures slumped, and in manyquarters the tour was branded as aflop. However, as we shall see later,

DICKIE VALENTINE

TONY BRE.N I received his NMERecord Award from the Mayor ofSwansea in 1953-and the occasionwas relayed from the stage of Swan-sea Empire to the audience at theNME Record Ball at- London'sRoyal Albert G.P.O. land -

lines.

Sinatra wasn't down for long !Other visiting Americans fared a

good deal better, and scenes ofriotous enthusiasm greeted JohnnieRay's London Palladium debut. Fansturned out in their thousands towatch this electrifying showman, andcapacity audiences at this venue wereno less appreciative of TennesseeErnie Ford, Billy Daniels, DeanMartin and Jerry Lewis, and TheMerry Macs.

Big news in the jazz world wasthe disbanding of the Johnny Dank -worth Seven and the leader's forma-tion of a big band. An Americanband appeared here for the first timein 20 years when the Jazz At ThePhilharmonic troupe played aLondon charity concert.

The long -running British stagemusical " Salad Days " was stillgoing strong, and theatregoers flockedto watch such celebrated Statesidemusicals as " Guys And Dolls,"" The King And 1," " Wish YouWere Here " and - Paint YourWagon." On screen. Guy Mitchellstarred in " Red Garters " (withRosemary Clooney) and " ThoseRedheads From Seattle " : whileMartin and Lewis in " The Caddy."Two of the year's biggest moviemusicals were " Seven Brides ForSeven Brothers " and "Bandwagon."

And so the pop music boom con-tinued. But more was to come, andnext week, you can read abo,ut someof the events of 1954-55-DickieValentine's solo debut and .U.S.-T'ssuccess . . Sinatra's great come-back . . . Eddie Calvert's Gold Disc. . . Ruby Murray's fantastic hitparade feat . . the beginnings ofcommercial TV . . . and the start.ofthe rock 'n' roll era!

Friday, December 11. 1959 NEW MUSICAL EXPRESS *

IT'S a long way from " Rock With The Caveman to " TheLittle White Bull," but with the right amount of per-

sonality and ability, it's possible to cover the distance in justover three years-and to feel no ill-effects into the bargain.

Indeed, in the case of TommySteele, the transition has involvedthe gathering of an infinitelywider range of support, plus aconsiderable increase in prestige.

Some will argue that Tommy'sappeal on disc is not as strong nowas during the first year of his reign.Personally, I refute that suggestion.

For whereas Tommy no longergoes out of his way to cater incess-antly for the beatniks, he has provedhis worth as an all-round entertainerby gaining a following amongst theage -groups and tastes who, two orthree years ago, were simply not in-terested in the lad from Bermondsey.

When one recalls the varying natureof the titles he has recently recorded, his emergence as a musical comedystar in last year's West End "Cinder-ella" production, his flair for lightcomedy evident in his films, and thesparkling family appeal of his currenttelevision spectaculars - it is morethan obvious that Tommy has con-vincingly blossomed forth from thenarrow confines of rock 'n' roll.

Back in 1956, Tommy rose tofame on the crest of the rock wave,as Britain's answer to. Elvis Presley. As the months passed, so basic heat

music began to find a level, and toinfiltrate into other more complexmusical forms.

Tommy, sensible boy that he is,has gone along with these trends, continually developing as a per-sonality - instead of remaining justa rock singer. With his latest record(one of the highlights from hisimminent new film, " Tommy TheToreador "), he sings what in effectis a children's novelty song.

Bearing in mind the variousmediums and styles he has conquered,I am tempted to ask - could Elvishave done the same ?

GreatestDon't get me wrong, I'm not de-

crying Presley. He's still the greatestrock singer in the world, and he'sproved that he is a successful filmstar - even though the extent of hisacting ability is a subject of somecontroversy. What's more, his careerhas been sadly handicapped by hisperiod in the Forces.

Allowing for these points, the factremains that Tommy Steele todayappeals to a wider range of peopleand tastes than does Elvis Presley. And all credit to him for burstingout in this manner, for there canonly ever be one Elvis-and ifTommy had continued to jog alongthe same path, he could never havehoped to be more than an also-ran toPresley.

It is, of course, true that in the lasttwo years Tommy hasn't done quiteso well on disc as in 1957-but thatwas such a fabulously successful re-cording year that, in view of all hisnewly -acquired activities, he couldnot really be expected to maintainthese triumphs.

In any case, since Tommy's recordwas first released, slightly under 39months ago, he has had thirteen discs

in the best-sellers.That's an average of one every

three months, and in my reckoningthat's consistency for you.And considering that this is 13 out

of a grand total of 18 singles released,it means that by far the greater pro-portion of his discs have been hits.At the same time, Decca will tell youthat the five which didn't make theTop Thirty came appreciably closeto doing so, and enjoyed comfortablesales in the process.

The first sign of disc success camein October, 1956. when Tommy's veryfirst record, " Rock With The Cave-man," made its initial appearance inthe NME Charts at 26th position, and subsequently made its way up toNo. 13 slot.

A StayerMany thought that he was going

to prove a mere flash -in -the -pan whenhis second release, " DomesdayRock," failed to attain a top tableposition. But the cynics were quicklyhushed when along came Tommy

from YOU to USJOHN HENDERSON, of Hyson

Green, Nottingham, writes:My congratulations to alt at EMI

who were concerned in the produc-tion of Connie Francis' great LP," Christmas With Connie."

The numbers, arraagements, back-ing and everything are simply superb, and what a lovely sleeve picture, too!Her version of "Adeste Fideles" isthe most outstanding I have everheard.

* * *

ELISABETH O'SULLIVAN writesfrom Clapham, London, S.W.4:I am tired of hearing Toni Dalli

sing in variety and disgusted toknow that a truly great voice likehis is to be wasted in pantomime.

I have heard Toni sing manyoperatic arias and it would be won-derful to see him recognised as thewonderful tenor he is - whenallowed 1

GEORGE BURNS, of Surbiton,Surrey, writes:In reply to the letters from Michael

Baker and Jenny Noviss on the sub-ject of similarity of records, here aretwo more: Pat Boone's "Two Hearts,Two Kisses." and Elvis Presley's"Too Much". These recording.; aremost alike.

*DAVE JACKSON of HMS Armada,

writes:Quite a number of LPs work out

more expensive than if the numberswere released as singles, so for thelittle extra that we fans pay, whydon't recording firms give us slightlymore ?

I suggest a chance to hear theartist's speaking voice, introducing hisor her album. I'm sure this wouldbe greatly appreciated, specially insuch cases as Presley, Nelson andDomino, who have yet to make anappearance in this country.

TOMMY STEELE appeal nowembraces the

whole familyT h e elegantly clad" Tommy T h e Tore-ador" in person. You'llbe seeing him as thekind-hearted bullfighter

soon.

with a cover version of Guy Mitchell'sgreat Stateside hit, " Singing TheBlues."

The first week of 1957 saw Mitchellat the top in Britain- and the follow-ing week. Tommy pulled off the near -impossible by overtaking Guy andsecuring the coveted top spot. Hewas only there for one week-but thetact remains that he's made it !

Came the follow-up, a tuneful dittytitled "Knee Deep In The Blues," onwhich Tommy was again competingwith Guy Mitchell. This didn't doas well as his previous smash hit, butat least he made the half -way markin the lists with it.

During the summer of that year,Tommy enjoyed a string of hits in-cluding " Butterfingers " (reached 8thspot), the doublesided success "WaterWater"/"Handful Of Songs" (reached

5th spot), and "Shire -lee" (reached 11th spot)-and at one time, allthree discs were in thetop table together.

Between times,Tommy was one of six

Decca artists who were featured ona charity "All Star Hit Parade" disc, which climbed up to 15th place inthe hit parade.

The year ended with Tommymaking a brief appearance at thebottom of the charts with a numbercalled " Hey, You."

Novelty hitThere were four Steele entries in

1958, by far the most successful being" Nairobi." an intriguing -soundingnovelty which carried Tommy way upto No. 3. Nevertheless, he had nocause to complain about " HappyGuitar " (No. 20), the lilting " TheOnly Man On The Island " (No. 16)or his return to the basic rockformula with " Come On Let's Go,"which obtained 10th position.

Due *o the diversity of his activi-ties, 1959 didn't look so healthy disc -wise. Decca staged a big campaignon " Hiawatha," but it just failed toenter the table-and then they re-peated the procedure on " Talla-hassee Lassie," this time to goodeffect. For battling neck -and -neck

'with Freddie Cannon, Tommy wonby a short head ' when he .reached17th spot.

Tommy's following release, adramatic ballad called " You WereMine" looked all set for the charts, even to the extent of BBC -TV's "JukeBox Jury" tipping it for honours. But surprisingly it didn't registerenough to make the grade.

For his current release, instead offalling back on one of his safe -betsellers in the rock tradition, Tommygoes even more commercial and singsa cute party song with a bunch ofchildren - a disc which " Juke BoxJury" voted a miss ! Yet here is the" Little White Bull " giving Tommyone of his most popular waxings forsome time.

I venture to suggest that manyof the people who are buying therecord are either schoolchildren ormiddle-aged married couples.Which just goes to show the wide-

spread public approval for this shock -haired young entertainer.

By the way, if you're thinking ofbuying a Tommy Steele album forChristmas, there are four from whichto choose-plus the " Stars of 6.5

Special" and " Cinderella" LPs onwhich he is featured alongside otherartists.

Also there are several Steele EPsavailable, including a delightful discfeaturing the soundtrack materialfrom "Tommy The Toreador" - afilm I strongly recommend you to seeat the first opportunity, as it under-lines all I have said about his de-velopment as an artist.

Two songs perfect for MalcolmMAYBE I've overlooked a record, but it seems to be ages

since we had a new one from Malcolm Vaughan. Now, onHMV, he sings two songs that are perfect for him. He capturesthe full magic of that wonderful ballad " You'll Never WalkA lone " (from " Carousel "), with restraint andsensitivity.

With the aid of the FrankCordell orchestra, he builds up toa thrilling climax.

The Michael Sammes Singers joinMalcolm and the orchestra for "TheHoly City." An excellent perform-ance. This record will be an asset toany collection, and it's one that islikely to get lots of broadcasts inthe years to come.

JACKIE WILSONOn the Coral label there's another

could -be winner for Jackie Wilson, accompanied by the Dick Jacobsorchestra. "Only You, Only Me" isa slow rock ballad, presented in thebig style, with strong choral support.

Jackie, of course, uses his vocalchords In a highly Individual waythat you will either love or loathe.Me, I love it-with the right song.

And this IS the right song. "TalkThat Talk," is a bright and bouncyrocker, full of sparkle.

Mr. W. gives his vocal all, and Idefy anybody not to get some enjoy-ment from this sure-fire blues -chaser.

"(Love Is A) Career" is an in-teresting thought, and Dean Martin,on Capitol, conveys the thought inconvincing manner. He's singing in afirmer voice than usual.

Tune and tempo are casualenough. Brass and chorus accom-pany, and the melody will begin toget hold of you after two or threespins. In "For You" Dean relaxes and

quietly serenades the current girl-friend. Pleasant rhythm and tune.

Fats Domino createsa really 'solid' mood

WITH a reliability and solidity that matches his ownfigure, Fats Domino comes back again and again to

the hit parade. He's in the Stateside charts now with "BeMy Guest," released here on the London label.

A bright, medium -paced rocker with the excellent beat back-ing that is always a feature of Domino discs. The tune isworthwhile, and Fats sings in a straightforward manner - hedoesn't need any gimmicks because his personality is big enoughto give a disc that something extra.

" I've Been Around," is slower, has a jerky kind of presentation. It's unusual and attractive. Fats creates quite a mood with his singing.

TERESA BREWER" Bill Bailey, Won't You Please

Come Home," is such a well -triedoldie that it is exceedingly difficultto give it any fresh appeal.

It needs a very individual per-sonality to do it, and that's just whathappens as Teresa Brewer tripschirpily through this happy ever-green.

A Dixieland backing from DickJacobs together with a malechorus completes the picture." Mexicali Rose " is another old

favourite which benefits from themagic Brewer charm. Dick Jacobsdeserves special mention for themost attractive backing. Label isCoral.

THE PLAYMATESAlthough 1 previously stated that

" On The Beach " was best as aninstrumental, I have now heard avocal version that I can confidentlyrecommend. It is by The Playmat..son Columbia, with Joe Reisman'sorchestra.

This love theme from the film"On The Beach," must be aboutthe only cheerful thing In themovie, which concerns the end ofmankind after an atomic explosion. The male trio sings smoothly and

roniantically, capturing just the rightmood of this lovely melody. As al-ways it's the warm, lazy tempo whichis the outstanding feature of thesong. This version could be a bigseller.

" First Love " is a gay beat num-ber with a rhythm in the " When "style. A bright and appealing tune,a good lyric. Great two-sided valueon this platter.

ROCK HUDSONJoining the ranks of film stare who

give us the benefit of their vocalprowess is Rock Hodson, who turnsup on the Brunswick label. "Pillow

Talk" comes from the film of thesame name. It is a breezy, light-hearted ditty of the guy who looksforward to wedded bliss.

Rock has a lightish voice, quiterelaxed, but not overloaded withdistinctive personality. Song nipsmerrily along-it will entertainwithout making a great impression." Roly Poly " (from the same

film) is a plain rock -type number thatfails to stir up any excitement.

DON LANGWith his own arrangement of

" Frankie And Johnny " on HMV,Don Lang has something really in-teresting to offer. It's an instrumentalwith Don leading on trombone andThe Frantic Five backing up.

Right from the opening bars it'san ingenious and cies er presenta-tion." Reveille Rock " is another non -

vocal, and I must confess I missDon's gravelly tones. but this r 'n' rsizzler has real punch and vitality, soI can't complain.

Try spinning this one at Christmaswhen the party's really swingin'.

ELLA FITZGERALDOne of the most delightful and

heart-warming of Christmas songs isthe one composed by Mel Tormd, and very simply entitled " TheChristmas Song." Mel made abrilliant waxing of it himself, butnow on HMV there's another oneto match it-by Ella Fitzgerald.

She takes the song very slowly, giving every single word a com-pelling sincerity. The orchestra is conducted by

Russell Garcia. Unreserved praise andrecommendation for this one. Thatace songwriting team, Messrs. Cahnand Van Heusen are responsible for"The Secret Of Christmas." Againit's slow and thoughtful, almostpreaching a sermon, but in the nicestpossible way.

I just can't remember her hav-ing made a bad or dull record.Coupling of this Parlophone

platter is "Turnabout Heart," acheerful, bouncy ditty about a girl ina "tizzy" over a fellow who couldnever quite make up his mind.

Accompaniment on both sides isby the Ken Jones orchestra.

PEGGY LEE

Together with Jack Marshall,Peggy Lee has written "Things AreSwingin'" and she has recorded thenumber on Capitol. It's a very lightlyswingin' item, with Peggy using verylittle voice. What you might call" intimate swing."

It's good, it's unusual and, whatalmost goes without saying whereMiss Lee is concerned, it's captivat-

WITH a title like "Wild Cat" and a singer like Gene 'Vincent. youmight expect something real y wild. I'm afraid you'd be dis-

rocker that really moves, withi..itbeing wild.Gene 'seeps the vocal output down

good as the Anne Shelton record bya long way, but good, nevertheless. The production is restrained and ingood taste. "But Not For Me"provides a sharp contrast. A smallgroup accompanies Rosemary for hereasy -flowing version of this attrac-tive oldie.

Gene Vincent's 'WildCat' is too tame

EVE BOSWELLPut a good singer together with a

good song and the result is some-thing worth hearing. This is true ofEve Boswell and " Misty." POTTED POPS

* NELSON EDDY (Philips) is a

name to stir the hearts of many olderlisteners. Younger ones, too, cannotfail to recognise the unique characterof his rich, powerful voice. Withchorus and orchestra he sings "HarkThe Herald Angels Sing" and "JingleBells." The baton man is PaulWeston.

* DAVID CARROLL, his orches-tra and chorus (Mercury), offer arousing, he-man rendition of "Waltz-ing Matilda." Very good. Flipsideis indeed something cute and clever. The oldie, "Sometimes I'm Happy"is brought up to date with guitarsplaying in the "Sleepwalk" style.Beat that for originality !

RUSS CONWAY revealshow it feels to relive

your life before millionsALL day Tuesday. Russ Conway was feeling the after-effects of the nerve-racking

surprise-and delight-of being the " victim" of the BBC -TV's "This Is YourLife programme.

" still got butterflies in my stomach. Yet somehow I feel the programmemeans a big turning -point in my future life," was what Russ told me on Tuesdayafternoon.

He confessed that it was a shock at first, then a slight worry, but in the end aninspiring and delightful half-hour.

Russ was very surprised whensound radio studio on Monday after-noon, when he turned up to recordhis show to be heard in the LightProgramme next Monday night.

It was a very unusual thing. hefurther thought, to find TV camerasinside the plush Piccadilly One soundstudio, a few yards from the Circus. And he was even more surprisedwhen he met Joan Regan-in full TVmake-up.

But one thought calmed hiscuriosity. "About a fortnight ago,"he explained, " someone mentionedto me in strictest confidence thatBert Weedon was to be the subjectof ' This Is Your Life.' "Russ went to work as. usual on

rehearsals for the pre -recording ofthe show. The clock was approach-ing 7.30 p.m. when an operatormoved behind one of the camerasthat had been lying dormant for solong.

No worryRuss was suspicious, but as Bert

Weedon was in his programme, hejust thought it was Bert's " Life "that- was about to be revealed tomillions.

Tension reached a peak whenEamonn Andrews arrived-and spoketo Weedon. " I laughed inwardly,"Russ recalled. " I was in on thesecret and had been right all thetime-or so I thought.

"I noticed Eamonn working hisway atound the studio. He spoke tome, I replied, and turned away, thinking we had finished our con-versation.

" But he was still talking to me.When I realised I was to be thesubject-or victim-I wanted to runright out of the studio. Panic ? Inever was so close to it."

But Russ overcame it, and theshow went on . . .There was Billy Cotton (on film)

he saw the television transmission van outside the

from Glasgow, Mrs. Joan Morgan,a childhood friend ; Miss Bissicks, his Sunday school teacher: andMike Holliday, who knew Russ inthe Navy.

"I bleached my new collar,"recalled Mike, " to take the newnessaway and to make others think I

was an old hand. Russ saw mycollar and said: 'You must've beenin a long time.' I winked and said:'All day !'

Years later I met Russ at amusic publisher's when I was look-ing for 'Yellow Rose Of Texas.'I remembered him, even out ofuniform."

Russ (or Terry Stanford, as he

Nat"King" Cole excels in EVERY TIMEI FEEL THE. SPIRIT (Capitol), analbum of 12 great spirituals, backedby Gordon Jenkins conducting TheFirst Church of Deliverance Choir.Plenty of heat infused into thesejoyous songs and an excitementyou'll enjoy over and over again ...

COMEDY SPECIALAdvent of new Peter Sellers' album,

SONGS FOR SWINGINGSELLERS, is an event for allwho enjoyed his last LP or hisbrilliant work in various mediums. You won't be disappointed - hesatirises with devastating wit, skiffle(a Donegan "take off"), a rock im-presario and one of his boys, radioshows, boarding schools, as well assinging My Old Dutch (a wickedburlesque) and I Haven't Told Her,She Hasn't Told Me (in pleasantvoice). On two tracks he is aided bythat queen of comediennes, IreneHandl. All very amusing and just thething for the "interval" at yourChristmas party. -

JoENE RAT joins 'Old Pals' in the Charts!IT'S Old Pals' week in the hit parade !Just take a look at the top table, and reflect on

the significance of some of the names appearing there. Several of the artists currentlyriding high had practically been given up for lost-yet here they are, lending a decidedly 1955flavour to the Charts.

What a year it's been for come-backs ! British stars like JoanRegan, Dickie Valentine and TheBeverley Sisters have enjoyedtheir most successful recordingyear for many seasons, whilelong-established favourites such asWinnie Atwell and Gracie Fieldshave convincingly cemented theirpopularity.

But perhaps the most resoundingtriumph of all has been scored bythat trio of oft -reputed has-beens-Frankie Laine, Guy Mitchell andJohnnie Ray. And in the process, they have no doubt gladdened thehearts of Philips Records executives-for all three singers are released onthis label over here, and they havebeen noticeably missing from thetable of honours for the past fewyears.

RightBack at the end of October, 1

suggested in the NME that bothFrankie and Guy might well reappearin the lists before long --and I wasproved right when they duly showedup with "Rawhide" and "HeartachesBy The Number" respectively.

But no one noticed Johnnie Raycreeping up on their heels. Then last week he burst into the

sellers with his waxing of " I'll NeverFall In Love Again," which today issituated at 28th position.

The reason why Johnnie's return isperhaps a little more unexpected thanthe other two is this-his record wasreleased way back in the summer.and it looked very much as thoughit had failed to make the grade.

When first issued in August, atten-tion was focused on the other side,

You're All That I Live -For." Itwas this waxing which the disc -jockeys chose to include in their pro-grammes, and which Philips nomin-ated as the " A " side.

For all the radio coverage and ex -

By DEREKJOHNSON

ploitation, this title failed to register. And then interest began to switch tothe coupling. Sales gathered momen-tum, an airing on BBC -TV's-" JukeBox Jury" clinched matters-and, heypresto! the disc was in the Charts. And what's more, it had taken closeon four months to get there!

There's probably one other factorwhich should be taken into considera-tion - the recent unfortunate courtcase in which Johnnie was involved.Happily he was acquitted, but untilthen, it was not good publicity forhim. -

However, one school of thoughtmaintains that any publicity is goodpublicity, and that theory appears tohave been substantiated in this in-stance. For the case brought Johnnieinto the public eye once again, re-minded people of his existence and-I feel sure-helped to boost his recordsales when he was declared innocent.

I (and many thousands of his fans)can derive satisfaction from theknowledge that Johnnie had, at least, gained some advantage from thiswholly unpleasant, unnecessary inci-dent.

New eraDoes this return to the hit parade

indicate that we are entering a newJohnnie Ray disc era-and that hemight, in fact, achieve another No. 1best-seller ?

No, I don't think it means anysuch thing-and I'll tell you why.Johnnie is no longer the sudden

sensational craze he was back in 1952,when he burst upon a startled worldwith " Cry " and " The Little White

Cloud." He is now a mature record-ing artist, who can always be assuredof steady sales even on poor -qualitymaterial-and he can expect occa-sional and periodic Chart entrieswhen he hits upon songs which hap-pen particularly to tickle the public'sfancy.

Every once in a while, a songcomes along which is strictly Johnnie'scup of tea - and the outcome is aNo. I seller. As in 1954 when hecame up with " Such A Night," thenumber which the BBC shunned butthe fans didn't; two years later, whenhe waxed probably his biggest sellerof all, "Just Walkin' In The Rain":and the following year, when henotched up a hat -trick with "Yes, To-night, Josephine."

And, of course, we mustremember that "Cry" and"Little White Cloud" weredoing the rounds in Britainbefore the inauguration ofthe NME Charts. Hadthese been in existence atthe time, it is probablethat Johnnie would haveanother one or two best-sellers in Britain to hiscredit now.

Anyway, judging by the law ofaverages, it looks as though he isabout due for another smash hit.

shall be somewhat surprised if" I'll Never Fall In Love Again "proved to be the really big hit forwhich he is looking, but at least it is

having the effect of re-establishinghim as a hit parade artist.

Although Johnnie's singles have notexperienced world -shattering sales inthe last couple of years, he has builtup a considerable reputation as a re-corder of albums. He has an appre-ciable selection now available in thePhilips catalogue, his latest havingbeen issued only this month. Called

A Sinner Am I," it was cut duringhis recent visit to this country, andfeatures him with Jack Parnell and hisOrchestra.

Possessing one of the most demon-strative and loyal fan followings inthe country (as anyone who hasattended a Johnnie Ray live perform-ance will witness!). he can rest assured

Wink recites his way to fameFOLLOWING in the footsteps

of Jerry Keller, Big Bopper,Teddy Johnson and others-all ofwhom earned a living as disc -jockeys before becoming recordingartists with their own hit disc, is26 - year - old Winston "Wink"Martindale, who entered the NMECharts last week and is this weekat No. 24.

His version of the ingeniousmonologue " Deck Of Cards ' brokeinto the American top twenty onOctober 16, and on the same day, itwas released in this country on theLondon label.

In America. " Deck Of Cards "reached No. 7 before it started adownward trend again. At the sametime it started dropping from theStateside charts, it came into the topthirty over here !

Against a slow rock backing ofguitar, organ and voices, Wink tellsthe story of a soldier bringing out a

pack of cards in church, a deadly sinin the eyes of his sergeant.

The following day, when he is

Now in the British chartsafter its fabulous

success in America

brought before his provost -marshal,the soldier explains the religioussignificance each card has and that adeck of cards acts as his bible andprayer book.

the monologue, also recorded byPhil Harris on his Camden LP, wasperformed by Tommy Steele on tele-vision quite a while ago, and at thetime, The Alley Cat suggested Tommyshould record it. But Tommy ignoredthe advice, so enter Wink Martindale!

Wink's sincere and dramatic versionhas made a lasting impression on bothsides of the Atlantic. Wink goes tochurch every week with his wife andfamily of three daughters, and hisdeep religious feeling helped him withthe record.

DeejayA couple of years back he was a

Memphis deejay, and at that timehe interviewed Hollywood disc chiefRandy Wood.

" Randy arranged for two of thesongs I had cut for a local label tobe released nationally-but theyfailed to click." says Wink sadly.

Back in Hollywood, Randy had notforgotten him, however, and in Febru-ary of this year, he asked Wink togo to the film city and record "DeckOf Cards."

Then his employers transferredhim from Memphis to one of theirHollywood stations and so thefamily moved west.Wink promptly waxed "Deck Of

Cards " on Randy's Dot label andWink Martindale the recording artistcame into being.

A sturdy 6ft lin., Tennessee -bornWink is a very keen water skier andenjoys driving his Ford Thunderbirdsports car. Other interests includereading, his favourite authors beingTennessee Williams and WilliamFaulkner.

A monologue such as " Deck OfCards in common with mostsongs with a religious angle, can soeasily be ruined by an over -sentimental approach.Wink has managed to get exactly

the right balance as he explains thata deck of cards has 365 pips-thenumber of days in a year: 52 cards-the number of weeks in a year;four suits-the number of weeks in amonth; and 12 picture cards-thenumber of months in a year.

Although the disc doesn't actuallysay so, no provost -marshal couldjail a young soldier after hearing sucha moving reason for spreading a packof cards out during a church service.

IFOR GRIFFITHS.

that his reappearance in the framehas given immense pleasure to manypeople from all walks of life.

Now that the old firm of Laine,Mitchell and Ray have succeeded inmaking their mark once again, let'shope that the dawn of 1960 willherald a brighter year for them.

LPs for Your PartyRuss Conway will certainly he wel-
