REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS Meat Industry Food Safety Science Research September 2017 Background The New Zealand Food Safety Science and Research Centre (NZFSSRC) was established in July 2016 with a mandate to protect and enhance the reputation of food produced in New Zealand and to protect public health. The Meat Industry Association (MIA) is an incorporated society representing meat processors, marketers and exporters. The MIA is an inaugural member of the NZFSSRC, investing in food safety and science research and development for the benefit of its members. Request for Proposals The MIA and the NZFSSRC are currently seeking R&D proposals under the broad themes of: Food Safety for red meat products Cross-sectoral food safety issues that also concern red meat products All proposals should aim to protect and/or enhance the profitability of the red meat sector through the development of new science and technologies. While all proposals will be considered the MIA is specifically looking to invest in the following areas: Traceability and provenance of red meat products Novel solutions for the mitigation of pathogens on red meat products Novel hazard detection technologies Smart technologies for storage, packaging and preservation Consumer and market perceptions concerning food safety for red meat products Understanding and mitigating the impact of chemical residues and hazards for red meat Pathogens affecting health and safety of workers in the red meat industry It is noted that: All projects should align with the wider investment priorities for the sector, outlined in the Red Meat Processing Sector R&D Strategy 1 , to manage risk and improve sustainability. Any investment in fundamental, early stage research must have a clear path to industry application. MIA Innovation will consider PHD/Master level projects 1 Red Meat Processing Sector Research and Development Strategy, MIA Inc, 2015. Available on request Page 1

REQUEST FOR PROPOSALSMeat Industry Food Safety Science Research

September 2017 BackgroundThe New Zealand Food Safety Science and Research Centre (NZFSSRC) was established in July 2016 with a mandate to protect and enhance the reputation of food produced in New Zealand and to protect public health. The Meat Industry Association (MIA) is an incorporated society representing meat processors, marketers and exporters. The MIA is an inaugural member of the NZFSSRC, investing in food safety and science research and development for the benefit of its members.

Request for ProposalsThe MIA and the NZFSSRC are currently seeking R&D proposals under the broad themes of:

Food Safety for red meat products Cross-sectoral food safety issues that also concern red meat products

All proposals should aim to protect and/or enhance the profitability of the red meat sector through the development of new science and technologies. While all proposals will be considered the MIA is specifically looking to invest in the following areas:

Traceability and provenance of red meat products Novel solutions for the mitigation of pathogens on red meat products Novel hazard detection technologies Smart technologies for storage, packaging and preservation Consumer and market perceptions concerning food safety for red meat products Understanding and mitigating the impact of chemical residues and hazards for red meat Pathogens affecting health and safety of workers in the red meat industry

It is noted that: All projects should align with the wider investment priorities for the sector, outlined in the Red Meat

Processing Sector R&D Strategy1, to manage risk and improve sustainability. Any investment in fundamental, early stage research must have a clear path to industry application. MIA Innovation will consider PHD/Master level projects

Each application must include an indication of how the R&D will benefit and be implemented by industry. Business case data will be required at the full proposal stage.

Documentation requiredA two stage process is to be used to evaluate proposals:

Stage 1: Review of research concepts Research concepts for consideration should be documented on the concept note form (attachment 1) and submitted as a word document via email to the MIA. ([email protected]). Concept notes will be assessed by the MIA and the NZFSSRC Science Leadership Team. Successful applications will be passed through to stage 2.

Prior to preparing a concept note it is highly recommended that you discuss the research concept with the MIA2 to ensure that it aligns with our research targets and fits within the limits of available funding.

Stage 2: Submission of full proposals on request from MIASuccessful applicants from stage 1 will be asked to submit a full proposal for consideration using a template that will be provided. Full proposals will be assessed by the MIA and NZFSSRC International Science Advisory Panel. All successful applications will be contracted for research funding via the NZFSSRC.

TimelineThe timeline for the Request for Proposals is given below.

Request for Proposals issued 11 September 2017

Close off date for submission of concepts 27 October 2017

Review of Concepts November 2017

Request for full proposal sent to selected applicants 30 November 2017

Close off date for submission of full proposals 16 February 2018

Proposal Review March 2018

Decisions announced By 13 April 2018

Notes This document has been issued to research providers and can be circulated to any interested party. The final approval of concepts and research projects rests with the MIA and NZFSSRC. Late proposals will not be accepted unless previously agreed with MIA; All monetary amounts in the proposal must be quoted exclusive of GST All applicants will be advised of the outcome of the process by email (for both stages 1 and 2) MIA and NZFSSRC reserve the right to seek clarification or request changes to proposals to match
