His radio staon, Southern Cross Austereo said: "We acknowledge that a comment made by Eddie McGuire on Triple M's Hot Breakfast show this morning may have been interpreted by some listeners as being racist." In both apologies from Mr McGuire, and the radio staon, there seems to be a lack of responsibility being taken for the acon. It seems that it wasn't wrong, just a mistake ("a slip of the tongue"). Some "may have interpreted as racism" – does this imply that the fault is not with the statement, or the person making it, but with the interpretaon that some people are making? I do not wish to judge Mr McGuire. I accept that he is sorry for what he has said. I accept that he wishes to genuinely apologise. The issue is that the apology he gave over the ensuing 24 hours (when this arcle was wrien) carries something of a tone of avoidance. Using the PeaceWise principles, NCS believes that when a person has done what is wrong, it is right and proper for the school to encourage, and where necessary, help the wrongdoer to give an apology. We believe that this apology (or confession) has mulple aspects to it, and needs to incorporate the 7A's of Confession: Address everyone involved (all those affected) Avoid if, but and maybe (do not try to make excuses) Admit specifically (both acons and atudes) Acknowledge the hurt (and express sorrow for causing it) Accept the consequences (note that an apology is not a way of avoiding consequences) Alter behaviour (again, both acons and atudes) Ask for forgiveness If you have me, have a look at such an apology in acon. When we have done something wrong, it is often too easy to say "sorry" and not really mean it. Often, "sorry" is accompanied by "if"

or "but" and leads all too quickly into a self-justifying excuse, or blame shifting. We have seen this just in the past few days with the apologies made after Eddie McGuire's comments on radio regarding Adam Goodes. Mr McGuire's apology was accompanied with the explanation that it was a "slip of the tongue". His radio station, Southern Cross Austereo said: "We acknowledge that a comment made by Eddie McGuire on Triple M's Hot Breakfast show this morning may have been interpreted by some listeners as being racist."

In both apologies from Mr McGuire, and the radio station, there seems to be a lack of responsibility being taken for the action. It seems that it wasn't wrong, just a mistake ("a slip of the tongue"). Some "may have interpreted as racism" – does this imply that the fault is not with the statement, or the person making it, but with the interpretation that some people are making?

I do not wish to judge Mr McGuire. I accept that he is sorry for what he has said. I accept that he wishes to genuinely apologise. The issue is that the apology he gave over the ensuing 24 hours (when this article was written) carries something of a tone of avoidance.

Using the PeaceWise principles, NCS believes that when a person has done what is wrong, it is right and proper for the school to encourage, and where necessary, help the wrongdoer to give an apology. We believe that this apology (or confession) has multiple aspects to it, and needs to incorporate the 7A's of Confession:

Address everyone involved (all those affected)

Avoid if, but and maybe (do not try to make excuses)

Admit specifically (both actions and attitudes)

Acknowledge the hurt (and express sorrow for causing it)

Accept the consequences (note that an apology is not a way of avoiding consequences)

Alter behaviour (again, both actions and attitudes)

Ask for forgiveness

If you have time, have a look at such an apology in action. This video clip shows the apology made by Marion Jones, world champion track and field athlete who broke Olympic records. Then she admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs.

SCHOOL ATHLETICS CARNIVAL All students in Yrs 3 - 10 are expected to attend the Athletics Carnival on Friday 14th June at Shoalhaven High School. Seniors, who did not attend the Swimming Carnival at the beginning of the year, are required to attend this carnival.

All students are to catch the bus which departs NCS approximately 8.45am and return in time for the afternoon buses. This is to ensure safety to and from the grounds. Only students under the direct supervision of parents may make their own way to the grounds by 9.00am.

SPORT UNIFORM MUST BE WORN TO AND FROM THE CARNIVAL.

House colours may be added at the grounds. Black Hawks (black & green); Sea Kings (purple & white). Tracksuits and warm jumpers in school colours should be taken to combat the chilly conditions. Also, school hat, sunscreen and blanket to sit on are advisable. Students, parents and helpers are advised to bring adequate food and drinks. THERE IS NO CANTEEN AVAILABLE ON THE DAY.

Mr Harrison is very keen to hear from parents who will be able to assist at the carnival. Please either ring or

email the school office and leave your name! Parking: No vehicles are permitted in Shoalhaven High School grounds. Persons attending the Carnival should proceed across the playing fields to the Athletics track and not through the School grounds. Parking is in HOLLOWAY DRIVE or HILLCREST AVENUE.

SECONDARY ZONE BASKETBALL - GIRLS

Monday 27th May, 2013 Junior Girls: for a team of players who were very inexperienced in playing the game of Basketball, I was very proud of the girls’ enthusiasm, sportsmanship and the fact they never gave up. Their first couple of games saw significant losses and the girls were on a steep learning curve. Some determined efforts saw us finally score our first points and all the girls left the day with smiles on their faces and feeling like they had learnt some new skills. Very proud of your efforts girls- Taylah Anderson, Hana-Grace Berryman, Sarah Curline, Caitlin Fanning, Destany Thomas and Siobhan Waiter.

Coach’s award for the day goes to Taylah Anderson for her enthusiasm and team play.

Open Girls – with five (5) games to play, the girls were always going to have their work cut out for them. Our first game was probably the toughest and we sorted out a few game plans and got to have a few shots and it probably helped to settle the nerves. Throughout the day, all girls worked hard and we managed to have two (2) wins from the five (5) games. It was a pleasure to see the girls progress in confidence and skills throughout the day. Their court temperament was excellent and I want to thank all of them for a fine effort – Amy Burton, Chloe Ellis, Miriam Mackie, Johanna Pekolj, Jenna Smith and Kate Tasker.

Coach’s award goes to Jenna Smith for her leadership, enthusiasm and consistent performance.

Thanks to Mrs Dallimore for her coaching and taking the girls up.

SECONDARY ZONE BASKETBALL - BOYS

Monday 27th May 2013 Junior Boys: With only a few weeks to prepare, the boys pulled together a competitive basketball team. Each of the boys pushed hard to put points on the board but were unfortunately out done by teams who were better on the day. Regardless of the score line, the boys kept giving it their all in every match that they played. I am looking forward to seeing these boys improve and challenging the other teams again next year.

Well done – Nick Anderson, James Green, Ben Lawrence, Noah McMillan, Jayden Norsworthy, Ryan Power and Tom White.

Senior Boys: The boys came together looking to enjoy a day of challenges which loomed greatly before them. With a lack of regular basketball playing members, the goal for us was to get 10 points on the board, which happened in our second game. This was aided by some great 3 pointers going in from well outside the 3 point line. The last game saw the boys try to get their heads in the professional mindset with a team huddle before the match. This almost worked as the boys held the lead up until 5 minutes to go. Extremely good effort, Michael Jordan would be proud of these boys - Jesse Barrett, Phil Crompton, Kyle Lucas, Sam Miller, Oliver Robjohns and Jarrad Welling . Thanks to Mr Clarke for his coaching and taking the boys up.

YEARS 5/6 AFL AUSKICK On Wednesday 29th May, Stage 3 students from NCS joined their peers from Nowra Hill and North Nowra for a great morning of competitive AFL- Auskick in the 2013 Paul Kelly Cup. Over at the Nowra Showgrounds the six teams took to the fields to play three matches each. NCS’s teams, ‘The Pies’, ‘The Dockers’ and ‘The Saints’ got kitted out in AFL jumpers and got underway with matches. The games were often high scoring with lots of action all over the fields. Players were given chances to try out all different positions, including defending and attacking.

The Dockers ended the day undefeated, but all of the NCS teams played well, demonstrated sporting behaviour and fair play. They certainly are a credit to our school community. Well done all.

HUGE THANKS go to Mr Grenfell (Lily O’s grandfather) who gave his time so willingly to help coach and supervise one of the teams.

Nick A laughed, “I enjoyed watching my team mates, such as Eden G ramming other players and being brave, helping score goals.”

“It was a very fun-filled, energetic day,” stated Harry S.

“It was so much fun,” Alex A commented, “playing against our own teams and other schools.”

CSSA STATE CROSS COUNTRY - Primary Report

The weather could best be described as perfect for a Cross Country Carnival. Although many of our students had been to the event last year, they enthusiastically began the day by walking the track to familiarise themselves with the terrain. Following this, the races began as each competitor lined up against around 150 plus other runners. Students ran either 2 or 3 km in primary depending on their age and our students all made a great effort, despite the fact that some students were recovering from illness.

Two students, India Seccombe (7th) from Year 4 and Bryce Clifton (4th) from Year 3 will now compete at the CIS Carnival to be held on June 13th. Two other notable results were achieved by Lucy Chittick (11th) from Year 4 and Jonty Beavan (12th) from Year 5. Both students are on reserve for the CIS Carnival.

Well done to all students for representing our school well and being a great encouragement to each other. It was very special to see friends and family cheering on our athletes. Thank you to all the parents who assisted with driving on the day.

Last Friday our K-6 Department was wonderfully informed about the need for all of us to recycle, reuse and reduce the many items that we use in our day to day life. Their royal majesties the “King and Queen of Green” travel the land spreading knowledge of eco-friendly practices. Their colourful and entertaining presentation was enjoyed by all. Their important message if something that our school is currently addressing through our SRC. (middle photo is Eden Green with The King and Queen of Green)

They have been speaking at assemblies and in classes. Please pray for
