Partnering with parents On Wednesday evening Mel Lacy, Executive Director of Growing Young Disciples and Di-rector of the Children’s and Youth Ministry Course at Oak Hill College came and led us in a dedicated session exploring how parents can engage their children in Christian thinking when it comes to popular culture. We had a great evening, where parents from 7 different churches came together and shared in fellow-ship.
We looked deeper into what builds our chil-dren’s worldviews, and how we can encourage them to engage rightly and well with the cul-ture they are surrounded by. We thought more about how to ask the children: what is true and beautiful about this? (Whether it’s a T.V programme or a social media site that they use). God has given us common grace, the good things of this world, which can be found in many T.V programmes, etc.
But then we also need to ask: what is false and ugly about this? We live in a fallen world, where sin has ruined many good gifts from God. Mel encouraged us to talk through these things with our children, so that they can iden-tify what does, and what doesn’t fit with the gospel, and how the gospel applies to the specific area.
Our next partnering with parents even will be Wednesday February 12th 2020 (topic TBC), so keep your eyes open for more in-formation nearer the time!
Thank you and Welcome! A huge thank you to everyone who
helped to spruce up the curate house in
Oakfield Avenue in readiness to welcome
our new curate and family, Ian & Jodie
Chidlow with little Evie. A special shout
out to Robert Webster, Steve Whitaker,
Roz & Steve Whittaker, Iain Beeston, Ali
Drayton, Jan Mealand, Graham Lowcock
and Mel MacLeod. Their hard work has
created a lovely home for the Chidlow
family. Some works are still ongoing but
should be completed very soon.
Ian will be taking up role as Curate on

time until then settling in so you may see

JUICE Puppets
It is now 12 years since I first
set up the JUICE Puppets
ministry at St. Mary’s. During this time, I
have trained up more than 30 puppeteers
to develop their skills and be part of a
ministry that has presented the gospel in
many different ways, particularly at
Christmas time, Easter and during our
annual Holiday Bible Club.
Puppet ministry is a fun and effective
way to share the gospel across all ages
and in many different settings, from
churches, to markets and fairs.
Traditionally most of the team have been
at least 11 years of age (school Year 7)
and upwards, with a couple of adults to
help and support.
Over the last couple of years, a number of
the team have gone off to university and I
am now looking towards September and
adding new recruits to the team.
If you are in school year 6 or above and
would like to find out more and maybe
attend a workshop to explore whether
this is something you would like to try,
then please sign up on church suite and
complete the enquiry form. I am hoping
to have a meeting including ‘having a go’
before the summer.
As a new initiative I am also looking to
begin a purely adult team to help with
assemblies in our local schools. If you
would like to find out more, please also
sign up via church suite.
You could also email me with any
questions via
God Bless

Almighty and everlasting God, you have given us your servants grace, by the confession of a true faith, to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity and in the power of the divine majesty to worship the Unity: keep us steadfast in this faith, that we may evermore be defended from all adversities; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

FURTHER AHEAD
Persecuted Church - Laos The leader of Laos is President Bounnhang Vorachit. He has been in power since April 2016. There are currently around 225,000 Christians living in Laos - they make up just over three per cent of the total population of 7 million. Laos is ruled by the Communist party, and while Buddhism is an accepted religion as part of the country's national heritage, other religions are seen as a threat. Christianity is seen as a western ideology, and therefore hostile. Christians must take extreme caution to stay on the good side of the Communist authorities. House churches are considered ‘illegal gatherings’ and must operate in secret. The authorities use information from registered churches, which are government-controlled, and local leaders (mostly Buddhist monks) to put pressure on Christians.
Believers from Buddhist backgrounds bear the brunt of persecution as they are considered to have betrayed their Buddhist-animist community. They are frequently put under pressure by their own extended families.

Our Worship in the Zoo On Wednesday 5th June Jo, & Liz from the office took Georgia
Davids, Lois Holmes & Georgie Kates to Chester Zoo for a ‘Creation
Celebration’ day, organised by the Chester Diocese.
We began the day gathering around the Sunken Garden—which
houses a fountain titled ‘Noah & the four winds’, an unusual
sculpture! There was a short service with some great adaptations
of songs …
(To the tune of All things bright and beautiful)
Praise God for the animals
the birds and fishes too
all the wonderous creatures
that live here in the zoo.
The lions and the llamas
The leaping kangaroo,
The monkeys and the meerkats
Are playing in the zoo
Praise God…
The zoo gives food and shelter
Brings little ones to birth
Provides a home and future,
For creatures of the earth
Praise God...
Mum & baby Orangutan
in the branches—and us
all saying a prayer for
the Orangutans and
their habitat.
The beautiful Anteater—
we all decided we loved
him although he was
very odd looking—but
then he probably
thought the same about
us. !
Unfortunately the
bears were elusive
but the girls found
the wooden ones to
sit on!
The flamingos were lovely, it
was feeding time but the ducks
all appeared as well trying to
muscle in on the action.
The pretty,
but slightly
moody,
Elephant
Shrew!
Page 7
Worship in the Zoo cont….
The giraffes were a big hit with us all, the baby had
recently been born but was inside. This majestic
beast appeared to love the camera.
The Tree Kangaroo was so pretty, with
deep fur—definitely Jo’s favourite. Okapi—stripey bottoms as they
became known!
The chimpanzees were busy grooming each oth-
er and scowling at the visitors.
The meerkats were quite well camouflaged but
whilst we were there a little baby fell out of the
nest (the hole in the wall) and they all gathered
around it to protect it.
The purpose of the day was aimed at encouraging churches to
become Eco Churches. We will be developing this over the
coming months and bringing suggestions to the congregation
of how we can make changes, however small or large, to
protect the environment.
As a church there is a lot we can do in the churchyard to devel-
op and support an eco system for plants and wildlife. We will
start with a free survey of the churchyard by ’Record’ who will
carry out a full free survey and advise what we already have
there and how we can improve.
We have already made some changes in the Upper Room to be
more energy efficient but there is more we can do, and we will
be exploring this further. If you would like to be involved in this
project please contact the office.
There is a course that the Zoo run, which can be done here in
the Upper Room, which will show us how to care for our envi-
ronment effectively, they use very simple devices to attract
wildlife and feed them, such as this insect feeder/home, made
totally out of reclaimed bits of wood and sticks.

Encourage Your Anger When was the last time you experienced anger? For
most of us, probably not that long ago! Was your
anger ugly? Did you say or do something that you now
regret? Today I want to do something that may sound
slightly strange: I want to encourage your anger.
But only if your anger is going to be about something bigger than you.
Anger, like all things in life, has to begin with God. First, we need to re-
evaluate how we think about the Lord and his anger. Mostly, we
assume that anger is the dark side of God’s character that we need to
keep hidden from the world. But, of course, our heavenly Father
doesn’t have a dark side! John says, “God is light; in him there is no
darkness at all” (1 John 1:5). It’s impossible for there to be anything
evil in God, which means God is both righteous and angry at the very
same time (see Exodus 32:10, 34:6; Deuteronomy 29:28; Psalms 2:12,
30:5; Romans 1:18; and more.)
Anger is one of God’s most beautiful characteristics – in fact, his
anger is a bright hope for the world. Because he is righteously angry,
we can rest assured that everything sin has broken will be restored.
That means we can be angry too. In a world in which nothing
operates as it was intended and where evil often has more immediate
influence than good, it would be wrong for us never to be angry. In a
fallen world, anger can be good, constructive, and essential.
But let’s be very clear here. The Lord’s anger is “Big Kingdom” anger,
always working to right what is wrong, with patience, justice, mercy,
and grace. You and I, on the other hand, will often struggle with “little
kingdom” anger—so often our anger is ‘all about me’.
Between now and eternity, our anger will be a war between God’s will
and ours, between God’s plan and ours, and between God’s
sovereignty and our quest for self-rule. It is a war fought in every
situation, location, and relationship of our life.
You should be angry. The things that make God angry should make
you angry, and thereby spur you into righteous action. But be wary –
your heart will be prone towards anger for the wrong reasons.
Will your anger propel you to be a healer, a restorer, a rescuer, and a
reconciler? Or will your anger leave a legacy of fear, hurt,
disappointment, and division? God offers you the grace to be
righteous and angry at the very same time!

FOCUS ON… Tesol Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
TESOL classes for Women started
in The Upper Room eight years
ago as an initiative to bring
together women from different
countries and from different faith
backgrounds to learn English in a
safe and supportive
environment. Classes are
informal, run at three levels of
ability and are taught by a team of
five teachers, most of them
TESOL trained. We work on a
voluntary basis, charging only a
minimal fee to cover costs and
are all Christians. As well as
teaching English we seek to
represent Christ to the women of
Muslim, Hindu and Buddhist
faiths and those of no particular
faith. Some of them are new
Christian converts from a
Muslim background. We meet
during term time on Tuesday
mornings from 9.30 to 11.30 for
teaching and on Thursday
mornings from 10.00 to 11.30 for
Coffee and Conversation.
