The environmental implications of consumer packaging waste are becoming an increasingly important

component of corporate sustainability programs. Most companies have not sufciently prioritized packaging

source reduction, recyclability, composting and increasing recycled content in packaging. Increased attention to

these key attributes of packaging sustainability would result in more efcient utilization of postconsumer

packaging, higher recycling rates, reduced ocean plastic pollution, new green recycling jobs, and development of

a circular materials economy.

Some facts:

Ø Per capital consumption of plastic packaging to grow approximately from 4.8 kg in 2015 to approximately 9

kg in 2020.With an estimated packaging recycling rate of 30% - INDIA lags behind many other developed

countries.

Ø Less than 10% of plastic packaging—the fastest-growing form of packaging— is recycle in the country.

Ø Recyclable postconsumer packaging with an estimated market value of $2.5 billion is wasted annually.

Ø Recyclers have been unable to substantially increase recycling of packaging materials in high demand, such

as PET plastic. This is primarily due to lack of funding, modernize recovery facilities in many communities,

weak materials markets, and lack of a strong recycling policy framework in many states and municipalities.

What it requires is an active and concentrated effort by all stakeholders of the industry to bring it on

the track and to benefit from the wonder from various Packaging materials!!!
