2012 European Career Fair team members Welcome to the Fair
6 7 2012 European Career Fair 2012 European Career Fair
Dear participants of the European Career Fair,
Welcome to the 16th edition of the European Career Fair (ECF).
We, the co-chairs, Pallavi Murugkar and Dr. Katrin Tschöp, wish you great success at today’s fair and in your future endeavors. Even in these times of economic turmoil and financial instability many world-class companies and universities have traveled across the Atlantic Ocean to scout for talent from prestigious universities. The ECF provides a platform to help those companies bridge the gap between Europe and the USA.
The European Career Fair at MIT is the biggest event of its kind, bringing together more than 100 companies from Europe and over 4000 job seekers for the mutual benefit of all parties. During the past fifteen years we have seen companies and candidates from all sectors and disciplines find the right match for their requirements. We hope this year will continue in this tradition to create a match between talent and opportunity.
The success of this career fair depends on the support and partnership of numerous organizations. We wish to thank the European Commission for their continued support and valuable partnership. We are also glad to have the support of the MIT International Science and Technology Initiative (MISTI), swissnex, IKOM and the German and the French consulates in Boston. We are grateful for all these collaborations. We are also pleased by the patronage of numerous new and returning universities and companies that make this European Career Fair a success.
Last, but definitely not the least, a successful event is not possible without the tireless efforts of dedicated and talented people. Once again we are very fortunate to have a great team of volunteers who invested their valuable time and energy into making this event happen. As co-chairs we are happy to have been able to work with such a great team. Thank you to each and everyone that made the European Career Fair 2012 happen.
We again welcome you all to this event and hope you will find what you are looking for and that this career fair helps you to meet your professional goals.
On behalf of the ECF 2012 team,
Chairs of the ECF2012
Pallavi Murugkar and Dr. Katrin Tschöp

MIT European Club
The MIT European Club would like to extend a warm welcome to our 16th European Career Fair! We are a student organization affiliated with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology having a membership of nearly 3,000 people who come from almost every part of the world and share a common interest in Europe. Over the years, the MIT European Club has established itself as a reference point for many European scholars, academics, and professionals coming to the Boston area. It is one of MIT’s most diverse student groups, and organizes activities ranging from athletics to cultural events, along with excursion for hiking and whitewater rafting in the summer, foliage tours in the autumn, and skiing in the winter.
The European Career Fair is our most visible and the most important event on campus. The fair is the largest of its kind in the United States, providing domestic, foreign, and multinational companies access to some of the top talents from the most renowned academic institutions not only in the Boston area, but all across the United States. European Career Fair is designed as a several days long event which includes the career fair day, company presentation and subsequent interviewing at the Hyatt Cambridge.
However, we believe that European Career fair is not just an ordinary career fair. In today’s highly complex international network of business, science and technology, European Career Fair plays an important role in allocating local talent globally. We share the same view of importance of internationalization of education with our two main partners: MISTI (MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives) and European Commission, with whom we have collaborated since 2006. With their help, we have been able to create a new section at the European Career Fair, specially dedicated for european universities and research institutions, representing not only jobs in Europe, but academic and industrial research opportunities as well. As we look ahead at 2012 and beyond, we unequivocally believe that our event will continue to grow and serve MIT and international community with even more opportunities.
On behalf of the MIT European Club,
Predrag Djuranovic, MIT EC PresidentMichael Koeris and Sven Loebrich, Vice Presidents
13 2012 European Career Fair
MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives
MISTI, MIT’s primary international program, connects MIT students and faculty with research and innovation around the world. Our network includes hundreds of top European companies, labs and universities.
Host an MIT intern
Each year, MISTI places over 600 MIT students in three to 12-month internships abroad. MISTI hosts provide MIT students with pivotal personal and professional experiences. Many report that MIT students bring fresh perspectives, late-breaking knowledge and invigorating enthusiasm to these new environments.
MISTI recruits top-notch MIT students and matches them with a host and project. Projects are designed to align the skills and interests of the student with the needs of the host. MISTI prepares the students and insures that all logistical arrangements are made.
International Seed Funds
MISTI Global Seed Funds support collaboration between MIT faculty and their European counterparts.

European Research CouncilThe European Research Council The European Research Council (ERC) is a newly-created European funding initiative, designed to support the best scientists, engineers and scholars in Europe.
The ERC's mandate is to encourage the highest quality research in Europe through competitive funding and to support investigator-initiated frontier research across all fields of research, on the basis of scientific excellence.
Grants are awarded and managed according to simple procedures that maintain the focus on excellence, encourage creativity and combine flexibility with accountability.
The ERC, which is established by the European Commission and funded through the EU’s Seventh Research Framework Programme with a budget of € 7.51 bn for 7 years (2007-2013), complements other funding schemes in Europe, such as those of research funding agencies operating at the national level and those within the EU’s Seventh Research Framework Programme.
The ERC consists of a Scientific Council and a Dedicated Implementation Structure. It operates under conditions of autonomy and integrity, guaranteed by the European Commission, to which it is accountable.
ERC Grant Schemes
What kinds of ERC grants are available?
Two types of ERC grants are available to support researchers in carrying out frontier research projects:
ERC Starting Independent Researcher Grant (ERC Starting Grant)
The ERC Starting Independent Researcher Grant (ERC Starting Grant) aims to provide adequate support to researchers at the stage at which they are intending to establish or have already established an independent research team or, depending on the field, developing an independent research programme. Researchers applying for an ERC Starting Grant must be able to demonstrate their potential to perform world-class research.
ERC Starting Grants allow the most promising (young) investigators to make the transition from working under a supervisor to an independent research leader at an early stage in their research career.
The ERC Starting Grants may last up to five years and provide a total of up to 2.0 million for a five-year grant.
2.1.2 ERC Advanced Investigator Grant (ERC Advanced Grant)
The ERC Advanced Investigator Grant (ERC Advanced Grant) aims to encourage and support excellent, innovative and investigator-initiated research projects carried out by leading investigators. This funding scheme complements the ERC Starting Grant scheme by targeting researchers who have already established themselves as being independent research leaders in their own right.
ERC Advanced Grants allow exceptional established research leaders in science, engineering and scholarship to pursue frontier research of their choice.
The ERC Advanced Grants may last up to five years and provide a total of up to €3.5 million for a five-year-grant.

Dear Participants,
Welcome to the 16th European Career Fair! Today’s global marketplace means that compan-ies must hire the best candidates globally available in order to remain competitive. The annual European Career Fair at MIT makes this hiring process easier by bringing together the best companies and businesses in one place. For Americans seeking employment in Europe, this event is a great stepping stone. This year Germany, the “Land of Ideas”, will again be among the leading exhibitors at the fair, representing a myriad of renowned companies and research institutions from the country.
Lufthansa, BASF, Bayer, Merck and Siemens are just some of the private German companies participating in this year’s fair. The "who is who" of the impressive German research land-scape will also be present: world-institutions such as Max-Planck, Fraunhofer and Helmholtz Societies, universities distinguished through the "Excellence Initiative" and newcomers such as the Hamburg Hafencity University.
Whether you are interested in technology, climate protection, renewable energy, health, nutri-tion, security or communications, Germany offers cutting edge opportunities in Leading Clusters for every career path.

Boston, January 3rd, 2012
Dear Participants,
I would like to welcome you all to the 16th Annual European Career Fair. As Consul General of Portugal in Boston I wish to congratulate and thank the MIT European Club for organizing this most relevant event, which success is confirmed since its first edition in 1997.
In an international economic environment characterized by public debt crisis and uncertainty, it is a privilege to discover the organization of such an important event. This may have significant consequences for the personal lives of all those who try their luck and dare to change their destinies, namely by exploring all that Europe have to offer in the area of science and technology.
In the search for change, all parties involved, graduates and employers, academic and business, strive for good opportunities of a true partnership which can produce almost immediate results. Notwithstanding some clouds over the horizon, what better place could we find to organize such an event, than the MIT in this truly international hub that is the greater Boston area?
Let us seize this unique opportunity and give our contribution to the strengthening of Europe/USA relations, by sharing common values and interests, and by building at the Fair new professional and intellectual bridges between the two sides of the Atlantic.
Sincerely,
Paulo Cunha Alves Consul General Portugal

Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft
The German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) is Germany's central, self-governing research funding organization that serves all branches of science and the humanities by funding research projects and facilitating collaboration among researchers.
The DFG portfolio of programs offers various possibilities for funding of either individual researchers – among them programs with a special focus on early career scientists – or groups of researchers in coordinated programs. Not only German nationals can be funded by the DFG, but also researchers from abroad, if they plan on carrying out their research in Germany.
Some of the DFG’s funding programs are of particular interest to doctoral students and postdocs. Among them are:
• Temporary Positions for Principal Investigators
• Emmy Noether Program
• Heisenberg Program
Some programs are applied for by the university. The doctoral student or postdoc canapply for an opening directly to the university, not to DFG.
• Graduate Schools (funded within the German excellence initiative)

Inserm is the only French public organisation entirely dedicated to biological, medical andpublic health research. Thanks to the excellence and the multidisciplinary character of Inserm’s300 units or research centres, the Institute is well placed to develop research programmes onmost human diseases, even the rarest among them. Inserm is also in a position to ensure thelink between the research laboratory and the hospital bed. The results of fundamental researchcan thus give rise to clinical studies, particularly in the fifty or so clinical investigation centrescreated in partnership with hospital establishments. In 2010, these centres hosted an active lineof 115 trials.
Inserm is also involved in the industrial and economic promotion of its own discoveries:Inserm Transfert helps researchers to establish proof of concept of their innovation, and comesinto play for the registration of patents (857 in the Inserm portfolio*) and in the search forindustrial partners (683 R&D agreements in force and 463 licence agreements underway*).The Institute’s European and international presence is today a reality. In 2010, Insermpossessed 29 associated laboratories and 5 Inserm units abroad. It is involved in the EuropeanResearch Area, notably via the coordination of two flagship European projects: the EuropeanClinical Research Infrastructures Network (Ecrin) and the European High Security Laboratories,Level-4 project (EHSL4). Inserm also coordinates 23 Community programmes.
On April 8, 2009, the French National Alliance for Health and Life sciences was signed aroundcommon goals with this very purpose in mind, bringing together Inserm, CNRS, CEA, Inra,Inria, IRD, the Institut Pasteur, the French Conference of University Presidents and the FrenchConference of University Hospital CEOs. INSTITUT CURIE
Presentation of the Research Center
Research at the Institut Curie focuses on the workings of normal and cancerous cells. Why and how do cells become malignant and produce tumors? In this aspect, the research center and the hospital group of the Institut Curie have been recently awarded a national competitive grant as Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Research DepartmentsThe Institut Curie’s research concerns several main themes: Cell biology and Developmental Biology, Immunology, Human Genetics and Oncogenesis, Epigenetics and Genotoxicology, Pharmacochemistry, Physical Chemistry and Living Systems, Molecular Mechanisms and Oncogenesis, Cellular and Molecular Imaging, Bioinformatics and Systems Biology.Basic. Research is conducted at either our Paris or Orsay Campus within several departments associated with the CNRS and/or INSERM and with the Universities of Paris. The research center has more than 1000 staff members ([staff scientists: physicists, biologists, chemists], physicians (MD-PhD), physician researchers, post-docs, engineers, technicians, administrative officers…) and possesses considerable financial and technical resources.
Bringing people togetherTrue to its founders wish to encourage innovative and creative thinking to tackle complex scientific problems, the Institut Curie’s research policy places a strong focus on interdisciplinary collaborative research with the aim of providing fertile ground for new discoveries, especially in the field of cancer research. This Institut’s focus on interdisciplinary research is illustrated by the three following initiatives: • Regular interaction between physicists and cell biologists through joint seminars, cross-disciplinary conferences and departmental meetings – a unique opportunity at the Institut Curie. The exchange of ideas and tools promoted by this initiative has allowed the development of innovative approaches to tackle many questions in cell and cancer biology research. • Collaborative research programs designed to promote interaction between research scientists and clinicians as well as cooperation with external partners. • Our research team start-up program, promoting the work of young scientists, has helped to perpetuate research excellence at the Curie Institute. Young scientists thus get to work with more experienced colleagues, generating mutual emulation and innovation.
Cutting-edge researchDeveloping new technologies and platforms (imaging, sequencing, proteomics….) is one of the Institut Curie’s principal strategies for tackling questions at the frontier of scientific research. The Institute Curie, with the multidisciplinary expertise of physicists, computer scientists, biophysicists, physicochemists, engineers and a wide range of biologists in developmental biology, genetics, epigenetics and immunology is highly reactive and prepared to face the new challenges of science, an essential prerequisite to combat cancer and care for patients with cancer.
Advantages of working at Institut Curie • Provision of fellowships for foreign post-doctoral scientists. • Hosting of leading prominent physicians and/or for sabbaticals under the auspices of Yvette-Mayent/ Henri-de-Rothschild grant. • Advanced research training activities for doctoral students. • National and international undergraduate and graduate training programs. • Close links with the Curie Hospital to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic technologies. The aim of transfer, that is of translational research, is to expedite the application of new knowledge in the clinical setting thereby improving patient care. • Focus on the impact of discoveries through dedicated departments at the interface of our basic research departments, the Curie Hospital and external partners. • And High technology such as: Imaging, Cytometry, high throughput sequencing, Bio-informatics…. Courses are offered on these cutting-edge technologies. http://enseignement.curie.fr/en/content/core-courses-0

PEOPLE AND KNOWLEDGEOUR VISIONInnovation has brought progress: a prosperous society
and competitive industry. However, shifting relation-
ships around the world and the scarcity of resources
in areas such as energy, raw materials, space and
health require breakthroughs in terms of concepts
and actions. Technological and social innovation
is crucial to this, and the whole range of techno-
logies has a role to play. As the boundaries between
domains, disciplines and countries fade, national
and international cooperation becomes increasingly
prominent.
TNO has this combination of technologies and wants
to be at the centre of society where it can put its
knowledge to optimum use for and with government
and industry. We have the people with the right blend
of curiosity, creativity and idealism to make it work.
OUR MISSIONTNO connects people and knowledge to create
innovations that boost the sustainable competitive
strength of industry and the well-being of society.
