Symptom

When performing a system upgrade or installing an Enhancement Package, during the phase INITSUBST (where the user is asked to enter parameters for the subsequent phases), the last question from the upgrade tool is the following:

To optimize memory usage during activation, you can use the so-called "memory-optimized activator". Do you want to use this possibility? 01)  -  Yes 02)  *  No

Resolution

This feature is intended to optimize the activation of ABAP objects during ACT_UPG phase in 32-bit systems only. Therefore, if you have a 64-bit system, you must select option "NO" for this question! Answer "YES" only if your system is a 32-bit one!

Selecting "YES" will force the upgrade tool to add a parameter on the shadow instance profile called ddic/masact/memopt = true, which will then trigger this feature during ACT_UPG phase. The problem is that it decrease the performance considerably during this phase (commonly from a few hours to more than a day, depending on the number of objects to be activated), causing problems to finishg the upgrade on the scheduled window. Here's a screenshot of the parameter set and active on a instance profile:

If you have already selected "YES" for this option and is facing performance issues in ACT_UPG, you must stop the Upg/EhP tool, delete the parameter "ddic/masact/memopt = true" from the shadow instance profile, restart the shadow instance (for changes to take effect) and restart the Upg/EhP tool, repeating ACT_UPG with option "Repeat". This should bring the execution of ACT_UPG to the normal performance.
