When Rebekah Malthus lost her 14 month old baby just three days be-fore Christmas 2012, she wasnt sure how to cope with the loss it turns out it was by helping others. In the wave of her son MacAuleys death to a freak accident, Rebekah and her partner Adam Hicks had a group of Nelson crafts people and parents come forward wanting to make a tribute to baby Mac. Rebekah decided to make it for eve-ryone who had lost a child in Nelson. Two and a half years on, the result is Project Butterfly. The project has built a path in Fair-field Park where parents who have lost a child can design a butterfly mo-saic memorial to their child and have it put in the path. Rebekah has also organised art therapy workshops to help families, sent people on respite weekends, organised food runs and started online chat groups so parents have a place to talk to each other. In a nut shell, Project Butterfly aims to support families through the death of a child. Families often stop going to counselling sessions as they cant afford it and there is no memo-rial in town to all the children who have been lost.Rebekah has been nominated in the community spirit section of the Pride of New Zealand awards for her work with Project Butterfly. She says she was humbled by the nomination.

Brook fence caused slip, says reportA report obtained by the Nelson Weekly shows that the slip that closed the his-toric Dun Mountain Walk-way earlier this year was caused by construction of a track for the Brook Waima-rama Sanctuarys predator fence and that options for repairing the damage could cost more than $110,000.The report by Nelson Con-sulting Engineers also shows that the Sanctuary Trust, Nelson City Council and contractors, ignored geotechnical advice by cut-ting the track too close to the Dun Mountain Walk-way, increasing the risk of a slip. They may also have breached the conditions of the resource consent by changing the alignment of the track specified in plans to inside the preferred 50m minimum separation to the walkway. However, the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary Trust and Nelson City Council would not com-
ment on the report which was sent to them on April 28. The trusts general manager Hudson Dodd says he cant comment on the report un-til they have completed the insurance process for the damage to the track and walkway. The councils only response was we are still working through the issues with the Brook Waimarama Sanctu-ary Trust, to effect a perma-nent fix. The report also provides six options for repairing the damage caused by the 35m long slip, that wiped out a 20m section of the historic, 150-year-old Dun Moun-tain Walkway and carried debris downhill onto the fence track. The walkway was closed following the slip and was only reopened after a temporary repair

I do this for my son, I dont do it for myself and every hour that Ive put in is because I dont get to spend it with him. Its what any parent would do, really. She says while the path is a powerful and beautiful memorial, the best thing to come out of the project is connecting with other parents who have lost a child. I think it stops you feeling like such a freak. Theres noth-ing out there that introduces you to
other parents or is there to catch you. This pathway cant solve your grief but it can give you things to focus on and things to help you remember your child. She says there has been interest from other towns around the country to have a similar project started and she hopes that will happen in time.

It seems to be a bit of a para-dox, theyre wanting it to be a nature reserve, and then they want to put in something like a gondola, it doesnt really gel.
Gary Beaumont, Monaco.
Yeah, its going up over the na-tive bush so youve got a great outlook, good for tourism, as long as you can hook bikes on and ride down the track.
Kevin Nansett, Atawhai.
No, its a Brook reserve for animals and birds so it should be kept as that, theres plenty of other places, why not put it up the Centre of New Zealand.
Nicki Calder, Stoke.
Maybe, if theres something to see and do and its worthwhile.

was completed on April 24.The options include stabilis-ing the walkway and slip using retaining walls and posts, and replanting the slip, with the most expensive option costing $110,000 or more. Another option, to develop an alterna-tive alignment for the fence track and fill in the slipped section of the walkway, would be very expensive, while a simple clean-up of the debris and replacing limited fill on the walkway would only be a high-risk temporary solution.Well-known mountain biking advocate, Bryce Buckland, and Nelson Residents Association president, Mike Rodwell, say the report has confirmed their fears about the alignment of
the fence track. Mike says the risks associated with the fence were obvious to any practical person and its disappointing the geotechnical advice was ignored.Bryce says he is also concerned that the fence track will cause slips on other parts of the Dun Mountain Walkway and asks who is going to pay for that? Although the report identified the 70mm of rain that fell on
March 6 as a contributing fac-tor, Bryce says that wasnt the main reason for the slip. The tracks been there for 150 years and all of a sudden it be-comes unhinged? What does that show?Bryce also says the report shows that a daily rainfall of 70mm or more was recorded five times in the last year, with 105mm falling on April 15, 2014.Mike, who is a former trustee of the Dun Mountain Trail, says both he and Bryce warned the council about the potential risks of conducting significant earthworks near the walkway. Bryce says the terrain near the slip is so steep the probability of slope failure was obvious and the fence should not have been allowed near it.

Crumbling footpaths along Rocks Rd are being repaired by contractors this week as part of regular maintenance on the sea wall. The cantilever footpath design, built in the 1960s, covers 120 bays of the Rocks Rd walkway from the Boatshed Caf to Richardson St. Metal mesh in some of the footpath sections has expanded, causing the con-crete to crumble underneath. NZTA spokesperson Antho-ny Frith says this year NZTA trialled shotcrete, a type of sprayed concrete, for the re-pairs to the cantilever wall, but it didnt deliver the results they were seeking. We are carrying out the repairs to the soffits us-ing poured concrete. This is the same method that we used last year to carry out repairs to an-
other area of this section of the seawall, he says. Contractors lay the metal mesh before boxing up the underside of the footpath and pouring concrete through a hole drilled in the top. One of the toughest factors for contractors is timing in with the tides on the exposed sea wall. Any reinforced concrete struc-
ture in a hostile marine envi-ronment is liable to corrosion unless precautionary design and construction is imple-mented, Anthony says. The NZ Transport Agency currently inspects the wall an-nually and are also repairing some of the vertical rim sup-ports. The work is scheduled to be completed in the next 2-3 weeks.
Speeding drivers bustedNelson motorists have been clocked travelling at up to 154kmh in a police speed sting. On Thursday night eight drivers were de-tected at speeds between 118 and 135kmh on Whakatu Drive. Two drivers received instant roadside suspensions the following night af-ter being clocked travelling at 124kmh and
154kmh, respectively. Senior Sergeant Grant Andrews says last week police had a focus on speed around schools in Nelson. In Collingwood St during school hour, police detected 80 vehicles speeding with many travelling at up to 70kmh in a 50kmh zone.

Nelson sailor Daryl Wislangs Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing Team has won the Volvo Ocean Race with a leg to go and the former Nelson Yacht Club junior says hes already setting his eyes on the next one.Daryl is the boat captain of Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing which crossed the fin-ished line into Lorient in France in third place, but secured it enough points to ensure they could not be overtaken in the race for the round the world title. He says it was a strange feeling on the boat when it crossed the finish line knowing theyd done enough to win. It was really close heading to the fin-ish line, a team was just 0.6 of a mile be-hind us and if they had overtaken us we wouldnt have been in the wining posi-tion, so it was pretty tense right up until the finish.Daryl has been involved in the Volvo Ocean Race for a decade and he says to win it is a huge achievement. It doesnt matter how little sleep youve had, youve got plenty of energy to have a good celebration when you cross the line. Its been ten years of my life to try and do it and its a great feeling. Theres the Americas Cup, the Olym-pics and the Volvo Ocean Race, and to
do well in any of those races is amazing. The nine month 38,739-nautical mile race started in Spain in October, before heading to South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, China, New Zealand, Brazil, the United States, Portugal, France and it will finish in Sweden.Daryl says hed love to take the next step and skipper his own boat. It would be quite nice to get something going out of New Zealand. Skippering a boat is a goal Ive had for a long, long time but whether or not that happens, who knows? He has tried in the past to pull together
enough sponsorship money to put a New Zealand-based team together and is hopeful it can be done for the next race.In the meantime, Daryl will head to the United States a week after the end of the ocean race to sail in a trans-Atlantic race before taking a break. After that it could be planning for the next round the world race, or perhaps a tilt at the Americas Cup. With all these people leaving Team New Zealand there might be an oppor-tunity to go and do the cup with them, you never know.

Supporters of Tahunanuis Modellers Pond had a significant win last week with the council agreeing to put money aside to concrete the bottom. The council have agreed to provide funding of up to $600,000, the rest will need to be paid for by the Nelson Society of Modellers. The council will also provide $15,000 a year towards maintenance costs. Modellers secretary Tracey Gibbs says the first step is for the council to draw up plans and get prices to seal the bottom of the pond with concrete. We can then take these plans and go out and get sponsorship from businesses and community groups. Tracy says she was over the moon with the support the society has had from the community. The petition presented to the council on Thursday received 1773 signatures. Seven Tahunaui School pupils, along with Tahunanui Business Association spokesperson John
Gilbertson, presented the petition to Mayor Rachel Reese during the council meeting. Lucy Summerfield, a pupil at Tahunanui School, spoke to the council about how the current state of the pond affects her and her brother enjoying his model boat. He cant actually drive it around because all the wood gets twisted in the propeller. Me and Tristan have to wade out in this yucky, mucky, murky water and its disgusting. If we fix it up, then that would help a lot of people.

Council opens door for gondola, will public shut it? A draft plan of the Brook Recreation Re-serve opens the door for the proposed gondola, as well as keeping the current camping ground.Nelson City Council agreed on the plan last week and it opened for consultation with residents yesterday. The draft plan outlines how the reserve that includes the Brook Camp could be used in the future, what needs protection
on the site and how the setting could best serve both Nelsonians and visitors to the region. The council has signalled its preference for a vision for the site that would allow for a recreation area, camping, education facili-ties and tourism ventures to be pursued in the future -- which could include the gon-dola project that a group of Nelsonians is working on.
Mayor Rachel Reese says it is a compre-hensive document that provides a sound basis for consultation with the community. This draft plan now seeks peoples input to a range of propositions. The council has signalled a preference that allows for tourism activities as part of this area, given that The Brook Waimarama Sanctuary is already a significant tourism asset for this city.
The draft plan and summary is available to view at the councils customer service cen-tre and libraries, along with submission forms. People can also see the draft plan via the council website nelson.govt.nzConsultation closes on Monday 17 August 2015 at 5pm. A hearing panel will hear public submissions, and make recommen-dations to amend the draft plan, before a final version is adopted by the council.

Q: My partners hours have been reduced and I have lost my part-time work. Now we cant keep up with the repayments of our loans. What should we do?
A: It is very important to keep up with the repayments that you have agreed to pay. If you cannot:
Talk with your loan company about extending the loan term or taking a loan holiday. Be aware that these options will cost you more in the long run.
Talk to your family. Someone may be able to take over the repayments until your situation improves.
Get budget advice. You may be able to get a consolidation loan (for
interest bearing debts). The repayments may be less than what you are currently paying. Check that it doesnt cost more overall.
If all else fails, consider a Summary Installment Order. This is a way to pay off unsecured debt over time with no interest.
We offer free, confidential advice for everyone. Send any questions to [email protected]

Eight of the 15 tree stumps at Tahunanui Back Beach have been removed, after a child came close to falling through one of them.Nelson City Council say they had an independent arborist look at the stumps and eight were removed as they were found to be rotting. The council says the stumps were considered to be a health and safety issue. If someones child was playing on/under these and got hurt, then we would have been negligent not to have done something, said the council via its Facebook page. They had to be dealt with immediately. We appreciate that these were part of the back beach landscape and therefore only removed those that posed a danger to the public.Adam Hicks, one of the commenters on the post, voiced his concerns over the removal of the stumps. This is a real shame. I really hope due process was followed on this because youve removed a beautiful part of the landscape in one fell swoop without any consultation with the public.Kelly Gill Brydon says she believes the people should be responsible
for their own health and safety while playing at the beach.I believe its called common sense. Obviously, it would be sad if someone got injured, but that is part of the beauty of being out in nature. You cant eradicate all the possible dangers in the world or there will be nothing to play with.Rebekah Joy says there is nothing climb worthy left at the back beach. We are quite saddened by it as was one of our favourite spots. Some people were concerned about any further erosion the stump removal may cause to the sand dunes.Im a bit more worried about the fact that there are only so many trees there. The tide line seems a lot higher up the beach than it was when we arrived seven years ago and a lot of trees have been removed, says Bee Sparkles.

The Boulder Banks iconic light-house is to have its weather vane reattached this week, after it was blown off and damaged in Marchs 65-knot winds. The weather vane has been refur-bished by Port Nelson staff, and Goleman Industrial Rigging have the difficult task of scaling the balcony and attaching the heavy weather vane to the top of the light-house. Bruce Robertson, one of the light-house caretakers who runs The Ferry to Haulashore Island, says the weather vane was due to be re-furbished but the wind had got to it before plans were put in place to take it down properly. I went out a couple of days af-ter the storms and the wind had blown it off. The drama was that we couldnt find it again." A member of the public later found the weather vane as he was walking along the boulder bank.
"When it blew off, it was broken and battered and bent. We took it back to the port and one of the machinists in there has rebuilt the whole thing, Bruce says. The weather vane also smashed a small gas unit that fits on the top of the lighthouse. The unit is designed to control the asthetaline that once fuelled the lamp inside by contracting and ex-panding in the sun's warmth. Apparently, when the sun came up it would heat up the unit and shut the gas off to shut off the lamp." Bruce says he wasnt sure how they would go about fixing it, but to his astonishment the workers at Port Nelson came across a brand new gas unit in its original packaging at a Port Nelson store room. "It was a spare. Its bloody brilliant, when they made things in those days they made them to last.
Check out www.nelsonive.co.nz later this week for a video of the weather vane being reattached.

One of the more impressive artists at this weekends Nelson Art Group winter exhibition is also one of the groups newest.Robbie Burns hobby for years has been wood-working, but when the months got colder he decided he needed a new past-time to keep his nights busy.My wife is a keen embroiderer, so shed be sitting there doing that at night time and Id be watching the TV, so I thought bugger this I need something else to do, so I went and bought some pencils and paper and went from there, he says. That was last December and Robbie, of Stoke, has already finished several incredible portrait drawings, including his two kids, wife and even his cat. Those wont be for sale, though, jokes Robbie. I need to keep those ones.He says he enjoyed art at school but hadnt done anything about it until a few months ago. He got inspired after watching some instructional videos on YouTube and he joined
Nelson Art Group a couple of months ago for further advice. This weekend will be the first exhibition that Robbie has been involved in. But it wont just be his artwork on display, he also makes his own frames, thanks to his other hobby. That is handy, I just get the boards done for me and I do the rest. I really enjoy the whole process and Im keen for feedback. Seeing my drawings there this weekend will be exciting.
The Art Group Nelson winter exhibition is at the Stoke Memorial Hall this Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm. All artwork is for sale and more information can be found at www.artgroupnelson.co.nz

New flag road show hits Nelson:All those opposing it would not have boycotted it. Kirsten Taylor.
Not a great turn out, hardly a representative sample.
Adrian Ferris.
I don't want a flag that is like Aussie. We know how the elec-
tion turned out. Plenty of left wing Key haters who dominate Facebook, but Na-tional won by heaps. Flag vote will be a close run thing if ambivalent left forget to vote again. S Hell Krow.
With reference to the RSA guy, NZ has always been part of
"combined forces"... and, the soldiers at Gallipoli are buried under a silver fern. Dez Tinee.
The ones who oppose it aren't going to go to a meeting to dis-
cuss the new flag. If we separate from the monarchy then look at a new flag, until then our flag is our heritage. Nathan Towns.
The majority of the nation don't want the flag changed or the
waste of money. Mike Roberts.
Disagree with the RSA stand. When I was on active service in
Timor I served under the light blue UN Flag not that of NZ. We wore a Kiwi on
our shoulder not the NZ Flag. Myself, I look forward to having a flag which rep-resents NZ and is something uniquely ours, something inspiring and repre-sentative of who we are. Dave Trigg.
Caught speeding to pick up Thai:Might have gone cold by time got his take away.
Rayella Buzz Milne.
Paramedic on crusade to stop thieves:Feel for the lady with a drug abusive flatmate, and good on
you for caring for your neighbourhood. Donna Jan
Well done on going that extra ef-fort, shame it was up to you to
do it though! Sally Cox.
Good on you Frank! Legend. Paul Byrne.
Hopgood's wins national award:Fantastic news.Brenda Kenny.
It's amazing!Tracy Thorpe.
That is great. It is well loved and rightly so. Gerda Smith.
Housing accord signed:Doesn't change the underlying problem. Requires the Govern-
ment and Councils to sign off on an-other set of rules to temporarily make things easier. There is no talk of perma-nently changing the rules or abolishing them altogether, which is why there is a problem in the first place. Christian Galbraith.
Modellers Pond:I watch with interest the "for and against" the modellers pond. I
think our council doesn't do a bad job, but I think on this occasion they are dragging the chain a little. A few years ago I visited Timaru and the play area they had put together for the kids was such a success. Now we have thousands of families come to holiday in Nelson, why cannot Nelson equal what Timaru has created? The city council has spent thousands to accommodate cyclists, don't you think our kids deserve as much? We have people on community service let's motivate these people to clean the area and get some concrete down. If the council is short of ideas contact Timaru council for picture/plans. Get stuck in now, council, our winter is only short so we can have some happy kids. George Barker.
Rocks Rd footpath strengthened:Hope they make it wider, it is such a hazard for foot traffic.
Sheralee Taylor.

Rustic, clean, healthy eating has never been more delicious, thanks to Blackbird Eatery and Coffee. Mother and daughter team, Adele and Georgia Trathen, have put their heads together to create the perfect mix of divine cuisine with a wholesome twist. Their passion for food was a driving force behind their decision to lease the cafe space on Quarantine Rd, and after establishing the business in March this year, they have already found a loyal following. While they may be a small business, including Georgias friend and fellow NMIT graduate chef, Zoe Lithgow, Georgia says this only makes the experience they provide even more personal and welcoming. The eatery offers a range of cabinet food that is dairy, gluten and refined sugar free, and features raw food items. The ladies also offer a breakfast menu, protein smoothies, Sublime coffee which can be ordered by texting in, and a catering service for business lunches and morning teas. From June 13, they will also be opening on Saturday mornings with a new breakfast menu. Come in and enjoy the wonderful world of Blackbird Eatery and Coffee.

The team at Tasman Bay Plumbing are breathing a sigh of relief after moving into their sleek, new premises on Lower Queen St. The company has been meeting customers needs since director Chris Inglis established the business in 2004, although up until recently, Tasman Bay Plumbing has been tucked, well out of site, down a back section on McPherson St in Richmond. Its now sitting loud and proud at the bottom of Queen St and everyone is pleased with their new head-quarters. Its really nice to work out of some-where tidy because thats how the guys like to work. So its good when youre coming from a tidy home base and car-rying that on in the cli-ents home or business, says office manager, An-dree Schultz. Tasman Bay Plumbing offer all the services youd expect from a qual-ity plumbing outfit, from full installation ser-vices to fixing a dripping tap or leaking toilet, and that applies to commercial buildings, new residential projects, renovations and homeown-ers in desperate need of some professional assis-tance. Whether you need a hot water system up-grade, maintenance on pipes or replacement of
tapware, the installation of waste disposal units, drainage services or solar hot water installation, Tasman Bay Plumbing is the team for the job. There is a huge amount of experience amongst the team of seven plumbers, close to 160 years to be more precise. While some of the guys have
been in the industry for close to 50 years, others are just entering into the profession and taking advantage of their col-leagues valuable knowl-edge. For Chris, appren-tices are an important element in building a strong team. With an apprenticeship taking three years to complete, Chris makes sure there is at least one apprentice in the team at any one time and that gives the business the opportunity to train tradesmen up to the level they expect. As well as paying the bills, Chris says the
perks of being a plumber are that there is always something different on the go. Andree seconds that and believes the satisfaction of seeing hap-py customers is another reason they love what they do. Well go to someone who needs main-tenance work because theyve had a problem thats causing them grief, and we can go in and sort it out for them. Also going into new builds;

you walk in and its just a piece of grass, theres nothing there, but three or four months later, youve been a part of building someone a gor-geous home. Their new location means they are central within their service area which stretches from Atawhai through to the other side of Motueka, and that can come in handy when someone calls with an emergency. All seven of Tasman Bay Plumbings tradesmen are mobile thanks to a fleet of eight vehicles, and because they are usually spread out around the region most days, customers who do call requiring urgent mainte-nance can often be relieved by someone in the area. While Chris is a plumber with more than 30 years experience, Tasman Bay Plumbing is also able to provide solar installations and is an au-thorised installer of NZ Solar products; having a
three man electrical team who are busy with de-sign and installation work both here in the Nel-son region and with their 12 franchises around New Zealand. Tasman Bay Plumbing has grown from simply using solar power to heat water; the demand for solar panels to generate energy that runs the home saw Chris establish NZ Solar in 2005, to cater to the electrical installations. Hav-ing a team of electricians right next door is also handy for clients when their maintenance issues could require the skills of either tradesman. If someone rings with no hot water, it could be a plumbing problem, but it could also be an elec-trical problem, so if we turn up and its not a plumbing issue, weve got someone to call with-out having to ring another company; the client can just deal with one entity, says Andree. Over the years, Tasman Bay Plumbing have es-tablished ongoing working relationships with
a number of long-standing and well known businesses in the area, prov-ing they have the level of skill and workmanship it takes to impress companies such as Gibbons Con-struction, Jennian Homes, Signature Homes, Colin Norton Builders, Total Design and Build and FreshChoice Richmond. Tasman Bay Plumbing stand by the workmanship they provide and what-ever the customer asks from them,
you can be sure theyll bend over backwards to make sure its delivered to them. They also pride themselves on being up front and honest in all their business transactions and a lo-cal business that their customers can rely on. For all your plumbing solutions in the home or office, whether maintenance or installation, give the team at Tas-man Bay Plumbing a call today on 544 8059.

The business grew from there with help from the local trucking industry, and in 1994 Mat de-cided there was a limited market simply selling containers in Nelson; queue the idea to start leas-ing them out. Thanks to a fleet of second-hand containers, this side of the business also began to flourish and in 1998 Mat had to make another
big decision; to start working for his business full time or hire someone to take over a growing work load - becoming an employer was followed by the opening of their first depot in January 1999; offering self-storage as well as the sale and lease of shipping containers. They only had 30 containers on site but it was the first self-storage facility in New Zealand that used containers. In the next three years, Boxman expanded from 30 units to 220. Today, Boxman is a multi-faceted, national com-pany, with a reputation for excellence in the stor-age container industry. Mat is proud to head a business that is innovative in the market place and always the first to shake things up; over the years this has meant replacing all his second-hand lease fleet with brand new containers, taking a proactive approach to finding custom-ers, and introducing containers with a number of special features, including high cubes which have one foot more vertical space, and various door options from full side-opening to doors at both ends. When it came to introducing Boxman to the rest of the country, Mat was approached by two in-
Its been 25 years since Mat Charles began his venture into the container storage industry. At the time entrepreneurship hit him, Mat was working full time in the shipping industry at Port Nel-
son and got it out through word of mouth that he could sell second-hand shipping containers. He was 19 when he sold his first container and had just turned 20 when Boxman was formally established.
