Theres always time for an original for Christmas.

    Miracle baby heading homeAndrew Board

Baby Jack Frost is on track to go home this week, four months after he was born but just days before his original due date, December 21.Jacks mum, Vicki Frost, went into labour at just 23 weeks and she was told by doctors at Nelson Hospital that they wouldnt try to save her baby, he was just too young. But four harrowing months on Jack is healthy, happy and ready to go home for the first time. The incredible journey that Jack, along with Vicki and her husband Marty, have been on has not only touched their friends and family, but the 3000 Face-book followers that Vickis page has attracted. She says writing the daily updates of Jacks battle has

Mums drive drunk with kidsDrunk mums driving with children, or to pick up children, have shocked Nelson po-lice over the past week.Ten drivers were caught over the drink driving limit over the weekend during a police operation, but worryingly, three of the highest levels of intoxication came from mums, says Inspector Jenni Richard-son. Our highest reading came from a preg-

nant woman with passengers in her car and the third highest reading was a woman with a young baby in the back seat. You have to wonder how long it is until an in-nocent life is lost.A third woman recorded a breath alcohol reading of 440mcg of alcohol per litre of breath, while on her way to pick up a child. The limit is 250 and the pregnant woman registered 880 when tested by police.

Jenni says police were expecting to see an increase in the number of drivers testing in the 250-400 range after a recent law change dropped the legal limit from 400 to 250. But what were seeing is breath alcohol readings in the 800s and 900s, which is outrageous, she says.Just three weeks ago police publicly said in Nelson Weekly that they would come down hard on drunk drivers this holiday period,

but the message seems to have gone unno-ticed, says Jenni. Its shocking, given the amount of publicity we have given to drink driving in recent weeks, combined with the fact weve made no secret that we will be out checking drivers. She says there would be an increased po-lice presence on the roads in the lead up to Christmas and through the holiday period, with more checkpoints planned this week.

kept me sane. The story starts around three years ago when Vicki a local school teacher in her mid-30s was told she was going through menopause and the chances of her getting pregnant were around 2 to 5 per cent. A week after she found out she was pregnant, in March this year, Vicki started bleeding heavily. She went in for a scan and her uterus was full of blood. Doctors told her that she probably wouldnt be able to carry the baby. She says those weeks were hor-rible she was constantly sick but

the bleeding slowed and by week 13 the doctors said she was back on track. But I felt that it wasnt, she says. I felt things werent go-ing well at all.At 21 weeks, while at a school sports tournament, Vickis waters broke, so she was rushed to hos-pital. The very next day she got the flu and was in isolation for ten days at Nelson Hospital. There she was repeatedly told that the baby wouldnt survive if she gave birth before it had reached 24 weeks. So it was pretty awful, I was so sick and trying to deal with this. We didnt think wed have a live baby then because it was another two or three weeks

before we got to the 24 week mark.At exactly 23 weeks Vicki went into labour and they prepared to say goodbye to their baby. Then a call was made to Welling-ton Hospital specialists and they were prepared to take the Frosts if they wanted to go. So it was

completely surreal how everything changed. We really, really didnt want a baby that had to fight for the first few months or years of his life, because its not fair on the baby. As

much as we desperately wanted a baby, we didnt want it at the ex-pense of a baby having a miser-able life. They decided to give it a go and Vicki was given drugs to suppress the labour. Two days later, on Au-gust 26, she gave birth to Jack, all 712 grams of him.Jack was rushed away with the doctors and his father, who was on hand to make a decision of whether to stop trying to save him if he was struggling too much. Vicki says even then she felt there was very little chance of Jack surviving. But he kept fighting and fighting. Even after five weeks of eve-rything going well, Vicki says nurses were still telling her not to get her hopes up. I cried a lot, I spent a lot of time in tears. It was my only chance to have a baby and I really wanted to do what I could, but not at the expense of a

miserable life.Jack has had plenty of obstacles to overcome, including compli-cations with his stomach, eyes, veins and lungs. But hes come through them all and the prog-nosis for a normal, healthy life is excellent. Vicki says through the whole or-deal, her blog on her Facebook page has been a surprising source of strength. The funny thing is Im not big on Facebook and defi-nitely not a public person, but we were getting so many text mes-sages I decided to make a page with updates to keep people in-formed without having to con-stantly send text messages. It was really just to let friends and family know and it just took off. It was really bizarre.Vicki is hoping this week to write her favourite post yet. A picture of her young family in their own home for the first time.

    Weve been let downAndrew Board

A Nelson woman who has led the charge to have woodburn-ers reinstated in some parts of Nelson, says the Nelson City Council has let us down, and is leading a protest outside the civic house on Thursday to let councillors know.Melissa Short has spent months collecting infor-mation about the rules around woodburners in Nelson and other parts of the country. She says the recommendation that will be put in front of councillors this week has let ratepayers down by not consulting with them during the review. And at least one councillor agrees. Councillor Tim Skinner was on the working party and says hes disappointed that the issue hasnt been dealt with and that ratepayers couldnt have their say. Tim says hes disappointed the public werent included, because it was clear from the start that they should have been. The initial agenda notes, for the first meeting of work-

ing party, on July 24, stated its role clearly as an interface between community and sec-tor groups so that interested members of the public can provide feedback.Tim says that didnt happen. The public were not consulted and that was what the working party was there to do. I was

frustrated at that but it was pointed out that the com-munity wasnt a stakeholder.Tim says air qual-ity in airshed C, which covers Atawhai and parts of Nelson city, is

well within national standards and could allow woodburners back. He says theres also room in airsheds B1 and B2, in Stoke and Tahunanui, before they hit the national standards. The Nelson Air Quality Plan was passed in 2004 and aimed to clear up Nelsons poor air quality. It has done that, but ten years on some say its gone too far and there is plenty of room to allow clean air woodburners back into some parts of Nelson and the air quality still be with-

in the national standard. It was a big issue at last years election and a working party was set up to investigate op-tions earlier this year. This month, the working party sent a recommendation for full council to consider. The rec-ommendation is to bring for-ward a review of the air quality

plan to 2016. Because installing a new woodburner is now pro-hibited, a change in the Nelson Air Quality Plan is needed before new woodburners can be al-lowed back.Melissa says thats too far away.

Im very, very disappointed. This is a much needed, long-awaited report into the air plan and the community is begging for change. Weve had this op-portunity, $100,000 has been given to it and the community has been ignored.Chair of the working party, councillor Luke Acland, was unavailable for comment. Councillors will discuss the recommendation on Thursday morning. The protest will start at 8.30am.

Hundreds of motorcyclists took to the roads of Rich-mond, Stoke and Nelson last Saturday for the annual Ul-ysses Nelson Toy Run. Motorcyclists from the Top of the South and the West Coast decorated themselves with Santa hats and tinsel and loaded their bikes and scoot-ers with various gifts for dis-tribution by the regions Salva-tion Army to children in need over Christmas. Celebrating its 26th year, the ride, which started in Cam-bridge St, Richmond, saw modern and classic bikes pa-rading through the streets and finishing at the Trafalgar Cen-tre car park.

Nelson shoppers are feeling the Christ-mas spirit, with the city again recording the highest increase in spending, this time for the first two weeks of Decem-ber.Hospitality is leading the charge nation-ally, with growth of nine per cent, ac-cording to figures released yesterday by eftpos company Paymark. This may reflect the annual Christmas celebrations being particularly buoy-

ant, but weve seen consistent growth in this sector throughout 2014. It may also be due to an increase in domestic and international tourism in places such as Nelson and Otago where growth is strong, says Paymarks Paul Whiston.Overall Nelson recorded growth of 7.7 per cent, well above the national average of just 4.3 per cent. In total, $46.5 million was spent through the Paymark network in the first two

weeks of December.Uniquely Nelson manager, Cathy Madi-gan, says the figures are great news for the city. Its just building on the strong start through November. Certainly, re-tail spend has kicked in and people are getting out there. Obviously hospitality and accommodation is helping to prop that up too. I think next week is going to be a bumper week so retailers are all happy.

Some friendly neighbours in The Wood have taken out a national Good Neighbours competition, along with eight others across the country.Bridget Cassidy and Mike Stevens were nominated by Lynette Miller, after their exceptional care of another neighbour who has been hospitalised. Our neighbour had been in hospital for a month after a fall, says Lynette. Bridgets partner found him, and they called his family and encouraged him to go to hospital. She then drew up a roster for nearby neighbours to help feed and walk the dog. The community has pulled together to help their neighbour while hes been hospitalised.

Mike visits him regularly and brings him books, and also helps in the garden, says Lynette. Its no ordinary garden either, its a flower growing business so its important its looked after.

The pair will share a prizepack from the Warehouse as part of winning the competition, which is run by Neighbours Day Aotearoa. The Neighbours Day team, made up of Lifewise, Inspiring C o m m u n i t i e s , Public Libraries of NZ, The Mental Health Foundation and Ne i g h b o u r h o o d Support NZ, are

encouraging Kiwis to get to know their neighbours and to find ways to support each other at the local neighbourhood level.

A launch that was built in Wel-lington in 1929 and has been in the same family for four, going on five, generations, has just been re-launched in Nelson af-ter its latest refit.Judith Glues grandfather, Roy Harvey, and his brother-in-law, Sam Weine, started building the 35 foot kauri launch on a steep section behind Sams house in Kilbirnie in 1927. Veca was launched in 1929 and remained in Roys family for 58 of the next 85 years with Judith and her husband Pete, of Rich-mond, completing the latest re-fit in Nelson earlier this month.Pete says Veca, which was named after Roy and Sams wives, Vera and Caroline, has a fascinating history with her framing being constructed out of an old man rata tree Roy and Sam cut down in Akata-rawa Forest, near Wellington. They also had to build a ramp over the top of Sams house to get Veca out of the section and down a steep road to Evans Bay where she was launched. They had to use two old Wel-lington coal trucks to get her down the road, Pete says. It was so steep they put an-chors into the road to stop

the trucks and boat taking off down the hill.Sadly, Roy had to sell Veca in 1941 because fuel prices had skyrocketed during World War II.

However, Judiths father, Bruce Harvey, brought her back in 1968 when he saw her tied to a mooring a forlorn state in Ev-ans Bay and she has stayed in the family ever since. Roy spent most of his retire-ment restoring Veca for Bruce and then we acquired her as an inheritance. We pulled her out of the water again in 1985 and transported her to Bill Gibbons old shingle plant in Lower Queen St for her second refit. We took out every screw in the hull and refastened and re-caulked her, and fibreglassed the topside, and then we re-launched her on Christmas Eve in 1987. I remember that because the Ministry of Trans-port wouldnt give us a per-mit to take an oversized load through town, but we went anyway. It was a bit of a nightmare because the transporter got a flat tyre in the middle of Stoke. There was traffic everywhere and I said to the guys, bugger the tyre, keep driving. The latest refit involved recon-structing the wheelhouse and Pete says he was a little con-cerned about the boat being out of the water for about five weeks.

Summer is here so take a few minutes to do this pool check list. Even when you are not using your pool you still need to ensure it is safe and secure to minimise the chance of drowning

My pool fence/barrier is at least 1.2 metres all the way around the pool. My pool gates/doors self close and latch from 150 millimetres and the

latch is at least 1.5 metres high or can only be accessed by reaching over the gate.

I have no openings in the pool barrier greater than 100 millimetres. I have a backflow preventer on the tap I use for maintaining my pools

water level so I dont risk contaminating my household water supply.

I dont have anything climbable closer than 1.2 metres from the top of the fence/barrier. (Check over the boundary fence. My neighbour hasnt inadvertently created a ladder by stacking things against the fence).

I only have pool related activities in the pool area. Its not a good place to dig my garden.

Search swimming pools at www.nelson.govt.nz and see what else I can do to keep my pool safe.

    CHECK YOUR POOL

Although Veca took on some water when she was re-launched, the wooden hull soon closed up and became watertight.Pete says shes now ready for the next generation to take care of her.

Pete says Veca gets plenty of use with their children and grandchildren always joining them for their annual Christ-mas boating holiday to the Marlborough Sounds. It gets a bit crowded with eve-ryone aboard and the cabins

a bit low, especially when you have sons who are six foot five and six foot four, he joked. But shes a lovely boat to sail and shes very economical to run - we spend more money on our rum than we do on our diesel.

NEW CEO FOR AIRPORT: Nelson Airport has a new chief executive. Last month, long-time CEO Kaye McNabb an-nounced she was retiring and the Board of Nelson Airport Limited yesterday announced Robert Evans as her replace-ment. Robert previously worked at Wellington Air-port and North Queensland Airports. He says hes excited about the new role. I am excit-ed by this opportunity and am very cognisant of how impor-tant aviation access is to iso-lated and regional economies. I

am very conscious of the acco-lades, and exceptional qualities that Nelson Airport provides for its patrons and stakehold-ers, and will look to build on that positive reputation.

WATER RESTRICTIONS: Due to the lack of significant rainfall and dropping water levels at the Maitai Dam, Nel-son City Council has introduc-ing stage one water restrictions in all urban areas.Stage one restrictions allow odd numbered houses to use sprinklers on odd days only

and vice versa for even num-bered houses. The restrictions apply to the use of sprinklers on gardens, lawns and or-chards, but do not at this stage apply to areas used extensively by the public, such as bowl-ing greens, golf course greens, cricket pitches and public gar-dens.

DIRECTOR OF NURSING: Pamela Kiesanowski has been appointed as the Nelson Marl-borough District Health Board Director of Nursing and Mid-wifery.

    Andrew Board

Facing a vote of no-confidence in his presidency of Nelson Grey Power, Neville Male says the nasty character assassination has shocked him. This Sunday, December 21, members of Nelson Grey Power will vote on whether to keep the former Sport Tasman boss on, or turf him out.Neville says he wants to fight for his job because he believes he is still the best man to lead the organization into a more modern future.

I have deliberately refrained from making any public comment to date, but an unauthorised letter this week from the vice president [Kevin Gardiner] sacking the associations elected secretary is the last straw, he says. In regard to the claims about me, I see them frankly as part of a character assassination campaign, designed to stop the progress of the restructure programme and to overturn a unanimous decision to terminate a position which the Association

Management Committee unanimously agreed was now no longer appropriate.

That role is that of the current manager, Pat Carrick, who has been a strong member of a group keen to see the back of Neville. Neville says over the past few months hes been accused of putting Grey Power funds into his own bank account, and has had a committee member call an applicant for a new job to tell her

not to take it.I have been asked by members and others

why do I want to continue in the role while all of these nasty things are going on. My response has been that I believe Nelson Grey Power can do great things in the future for its members and the wider community, but it must change its image and modernize before that can happen.Earlier this month the executive committee passed a vote of no-confidence in Neville, prompting the full member vote this Sunday. The vote of no-confidence in Neville is at the Suburban Club on Sunday, December 21, at 2pm.

Grey Power president wants to continue

    Neville Male.

Nayland College art students Milena Baden, Holly Maitland and Maddy Hanson will be leaving the school with a colourful parting gift as they head off to university next year.A mural at the front of the school that Milena had always admired was the inspiration behind creating their own piece, to showcase the talents of the Nayland College art department, and give back to their school after five memorable years. The mural is also a celebration of all three girls being accepted into the Ilam School of Arts in Canterbury, an achievement they are extremely excited about. The girls were required to take at least two art subjects this year and send away a portfolio of all their work. The mural is expected to be finished in a few weeks time and unveiled early next year.

Tahuna Modellers Pond:The Tahunanui boating pond has been a favourite place for the

young, and not so young, of Nelson for many decades, [when it has been cleaned], to try out their Christmas or birthday pre-sents or various marine models they have

built. I remember in the 1950s, as a mem-ber of the Tahunanui Scout Group, going down and cleaning the algae out, and as a school kid enjoyed many hours at this pond. The council will be doing the people of Nelson no favour if they do anything but concrete the pool's bottom.

The minority of Nelson's popula-tion, who coerce the council into spending many tens of thousands of dollars on so-called artistic embellishments around the city, for example, a green human-faced asparagus, some rusty iron and a walkway along the river, [which no soldiers would have walked along on their way to the port as it was mud flat].No greater work of art can be than that of many happy chil-dren sailing their boats on a safe haven, the Tahunanui Modellers pond. David Potts.

Mike Corkill says thanks:Good luck Mike, I hope you get to see your amaz-

    ing Christmas 2014! xxx From a $1 Warrior! :) Nicky (via nelson-weekly.co.nz).

It's a privilege to be a part of your journey. The love

of NZ is with you all. Deb Clarke (via nelsonweekly.co.nz).

I cried reading this yesterday. Send-ing my aroha to him and his family.

I have no idea what they're going through, but I'm truly sorry to hear the updated in-formation. Jannelle Patterson.

What I find sucks about this situ-ation is that so many families and

people get given so much from the gov-ernment and they don't even need or de-serve it. This family, who really need help, have struggled the entire time to try and raise the funds themselves. My heart and prayers go out to Mike and his family. May the road rise to meet you, may the wind be always at your back, may the sun shine warm upon your face, the rain fall soft upon your fields, and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand xoxo. Sarah-Hope Bailey.

I too felt tears when I read this yes-terday. Much love to you and your

    family xoxo. Kelly Watson.

What sad news to hear. Sending love and prayers to you and your

    family. Verity Bartlett.

Really sorry to hear this. I've do-nated to Mike's cause and a few

other people fighting cancer, fundraising for life, extending treatment and in two others it's been too late, they've died soon after. I wish these stories became public

earlier so these poor people had more of a chance. Jasmin Price.

So sad to hear, thinking and pray-ing for you and family xo.

    Eniko Fekete.

Such an evocative photo of Mike & his wife, capturing the aching

totality of their situation - the enduring bravery, the love, and the shadow which has come between them. May their family feel peace and love during the last of their time together. You are a community paper in the truest sense, Nelson Weekly; Mike's gratitude for how you helped rally us all is such a wonderful testament to that. Melis-sa Short.

Butcher robbed:Poor chap really has been hit with the s*#t stick!! As for the robbers,

I do hope they get severe diarrhoea from their Christmas dinners!! And then con-tract the clap!! Janelle Thorpe.

Look at Trade Me that might flush them out. Nelson might be attract-

ing a lot of people who want to live there, but it is also attracting a criminal element. The crime rate has certainly increased over the last three or four years. Brenda Kenny.

Compassion and dedication have never been absent from New Zealand Red Cross volunteers Mary Keddie and Pat Borlase. The ladies were amongst several that received awards for their services to the Red Cross organisation at their annual gathering, last Thursday. Branches from across Nelson and Tasman region came together to celebrate the end of the year and recognise the contributions made by volunteers, ranging from five years of service all the way up to 70 years. No-body expects the recognition, but from the Red Crosss perspective, its nice for them to be recognised, they dont do it for that reason, they do it because they enjoy doing it and because they care, says Red Crosss service centre coordi-nator, Jackie TyeWhile 23 volunteers received long ser-vice awards, Mary Keddie and Pat Bor-lase were also acknowledged with Hon-orary Life Membership Awards, given to those who have played a particular role in the Red Cross over an extended period of time and made a valuable contribution to the organisation. Pat became part of Red Cross officially in 1989. Back in the sixties, she had been involved with sewing for Red

Cross through the Womens Division of Federated Farmers, and after her move to Richmond it seemed natural to join them. She began as a relief driver for Meals on Wheels and two months later found herself on the committee. Her dedication to making sure none of the recipients missed their meals when drivers were low has even led to her roping in her whole family to get the job done.Mary is also primarily involved with

Meals on Wheels, and has been since 1960. As well as gaining honorary life membership to Red Cross, she was also the recipient of 2014s Outstanding Community Services Award. Over her 70 years with Red Cross she has greatly enjoyed meeting a lot of lovely people and encourages more young people to come into the organisation. Red Cross will also be celebrating its centenary year in 2015, with activities planned both locally and nationwide.

Isaac BaIgent and hIs oaksSome of Wakefields notable oak trees came from the famous Kew Gardens just outside London. They were planted by Isaac Baigent, whose family were assisted immigrants to Nelson in 1853. Sponsored by brother Edward

who was already here, they too settled in Wakefield. Isaac also built the Masonic Hall and later became a Mason. Early on he acted as undertaker and through partnerships the same business still operates today as P.Day and Sons, Funeral Directors.

Sergeant Edward John Baigent was born on 31 July, 1893, to Charlotte White Baigent and Jo-seph Baigent, Wakefield, Nelson, New Zealand. Baigent, a farmer from Wakefield, Nelson, joined the Canterbury Infantry Battalion as a Private dur-ing World War One. He embarked from Welling-ton on 16 October, 1914, and served in Egypt, Gal-lipoli, France and Bel-gium. Baigent survived the war and was discharged on 12 December, 1918. He died on 6 September, 1973, in Opotiki.EJ Baigent is one of the featured servicemen in the WW1 exhibition at Nelson Provincial Mu-seum.

The sound of trumpets and horns heralded the festive season when the Nelson City Brass Band spread their annual Christmas cheer around the streets of Nelson last week.Former president of the band, Pat Heaphy, emptied the shin-gle from his farm truck and drove around the streets, while 13 members of the band sat in the back and played Christmas carols.

The neighbourhood opened their doors and wandered out onto the streets to join in the festivities. Nelson City Brass have been playing Christmas carols in the streets of Nelson and Rich-mond for over 70 years. Estab-lished in 1857, it is one of the oldest brass bands in New Zea-land. They are collecting donations on their travels, with all pro-

ceeds going towards the Nel-son City Youth Brass Band operating costs and instrument replacement. The Nelson City Brass Band will be playing in Richmond, Stoke, Brightwater and The Wood from 6.15pm to 9pm each day, weather permitting, up until December 23. For further information, please re-fer to their website www.nelson brass.org.nz
