Cover StoryA daring group

of top internationalurban artists recentlyheaded to the danger-ous hot zone in theGolan Heightsbetween Syria andIsrael. Their missionwas to bring mes-sages of hope to theSyrian people suffer-ing through a brutalcivil war and to offercomfort to Israeliswho have been affect-ed by proximity to theclashes between rebelSyrian forces andAssad's army."Graffiti has alwaysbeen the art of thepeople," says CraigDershowitz, founderof Artists 4 Israel(A4I), which assem-bled this artistic taskforce to bear witnessto the destructionalong the Syrian bor-der and to do whatthey could to addcolor and vibrancy tocombat bleakness.

remains undeclared and talks takeplace away from public view. Indeedsources suggest that Saudi Arabiahas even agreed to open its air spaceto the IAF

Some in Israel worry thatSaudi Arabia and its Gulf State allieswould not hesitate to turn on Israelshould circumstances in Iran change. They argue that the Israeli-GulfStates link could be a fleeting one ifthe nuclear threat from Iran fades.

We share the belief, however, that consultation between Israel andthe Sunni axis will continue to growand that both sides recognize thebenefits of long-term strategic andeven economic cooperation. Whilethe United States fiddles on Iran, while Obama’s “red lines” in Syriaare shown to be mere rhetoric, Israelhas proven to the Gulf States that itis no paper tiger. Sunni nations seeIsrael’s destruction of Syria’snuclear program in 2007, its waragainst Hezbollah in 2006 andagainst Hamas in 2009 and 2012,and its assaults on Iranian-Syrian-Hezbollah weapons stockpiling asevidence of a willingness to act whilethe current occupant of the WhiteHouse holds up the white flag.“There is a lot of cynicism”, saysMishaal al Gergawi, a United ArabEmirates analyst, “and it feeds intothe notion that Obama is naive...hewas naive with the MuslimBrotherhood, naive with Bashar al-Assad and he is now naive withIran”. The Saudis may not, as theIranian government official Englishlanguage press told readers sarcasti-cally, be advocating a merger of thetwo countries into Saudi Israeliawith the state religion of Zio-Wahabbism. But it just might not bethat far fetched to suggest that thesounds of Hatikva will, in the nottoo distant future, be heard inRiyadh’s halls of power.

It is often assumed that Israelis alone in its refusal to accept atface value Iranian president HassanRouhani’s all out PR offensive. It isBenjamin Netanyahu who tells theworld that the “P5 plus 1” hasnegotiated the “deal of the century”for Iran. It is Israel that scolds theUnited States for “folding” on Iran.

But the fact is that many ofIsrael’s neighbours also fear thatthe “P5 plus 1” has fallen for a“pretty face”. Sunni Gulf States -Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the UnitedArab Emirates, Qatar - shareIsrael’s concern that the UnitedStates and others will be making a“grave mistake” if they are gullibleenough to believe that Iran nowsubscribes to the same moral codeas do decent men and civilizednations. These countries have“joined” Israel in asking how civi-lized nations can sit, basicallywith arms folded, while Iran’snuclear ambitions go unchecked, threatening regional and worldstability and leading inevitably toa Shiite hegemony in the MiddleEast. Along with the region’sminorities - Kurds, Christians,Druse, Sufis and Baluchis -Sunni nations see Israel as theonly country prepared to makeIran pay for its folly. It is Israel,Sunni states have come to therealization, that has the militarypower to prevent the Middle Eastfrom becoming helots of theAyatollahs and their “bloodthirsty,baby-eating Shiite monsters”.

The shared interests of Israeland the Sunni Arab gulf states donot mean that formal diplomaticrelations are imminent. ThePalestinian issue will likely have tobe resolved before the gulf statescan be seen sitting at the same tablewith the Israelis. But consultationson security and intelligence issuescont inue , e v en i f t h e a l l i ance

If you click on theIsraeli army’s newHizbullah website, you willsee a red and black logothat reads, “Hizbullah,Army of Terror.” The site isa combination of graphics, text and videos, all focusingon the Lebanese-based,Iran-proxy terrorist organi-zation and its leader,Sheikh Hassan Na’srallah.

One link refers backto what Israelis call theSecond Lebanon War of2006, and in fact, the sitewas launched on the sev-enth anniversary of that 34-

day war between Hizbullahand Israel that was trig-gered by a cross-border raidby Hizbullah fighters thatleft eight Israeli soldiersdead and two captured. Itended with a United Nationsbrokered cease-fire.

The website warnsthat Hizbullah today isstronger than ever.

“Seven years later,Hizbullah has developedcapabilities to strike any-where in Israel,” it says. Aneon-green graphic that fol-lows the text shows the dif-ferent weapons Hizbullah

now has in its arsenal andhow far each one is able toreach. The missile with thelongest range, the Scud-D,can travel more than 430miles, potentially penetrat-ing deep into Egypt andSaudi Arabia as well asIsrael, as well as targetingAmerican military assets inthe region.

“Since the war,Hizbullah has tripled thesize of its missile arsenal,”the website says. “In 2009,an IDF intelligence reportrevealed that Hizbullah hadbuilt close to 1,000 military

facilities throughout south-ern Lebanon. The installa-tions included more than550 weapons bunkers and300 underground facilities.Since the report’s release,Hizbullah has continued tobuild facilities in the region, enhancing its ability tostrike at nearby Israelitowns and cities.”

The website saysthat Israel is in more dangerthan ever before.

“Hizbullah’s weaponsare capable of causing farmore substantial damage

We met for morethan an hour with Bashirthanks to Felice Friedson,co-founder and ExecutiveProducer for “The MediaLine “ (TML) and her hus-band, Michael Friedson, co-founder and ExecutiveEditor and Director ofMedia Services for TML.TML is a well-respectednon-profit news organiza-tion in the Middle East thatfeeds stories daily to AlJazeera, CNN, the BBC,Israeli, and American newsservices.

To a person, ourgroup was impressed notjust by the scope of this pro-ject (a modern wonder of theworld!?), but by Bashir’sstaff, organization, exper-tise, intelligence, optimism, and drive.

Though Mr. al-Masrihas met many hurdlesalong the way since firstconceiving this project in2007 (construction began in2011), nothing seems todiminish his vision andoptimism. Obstaclesinclude a promised $150million contribution by thePalestinian Authority to

build schools and a policestation that never material-ized, allegedly because thegovernment is broke despitethe nearly $4 billion the PAreceives from foreign gov-ernments and internationalNGOs each year, and twosignificant political obsta-cles presented by the stateof Israel.

Though Rawabi is inArea A, controlled by the PAper the Oslo Accords, thewest bank is under Israelimilitary authority. Bashirhas had co-operation fromIsraeli authorities, butIsrael approves construc-tion of roads that passthrough Area C, which isIsraeli controlled. There isan access road for construc-tion equipment; however aroad wide enough to accom-modate the 40,000 futureRawabi residents has not asyet been approved.

The second obstacleis water. Trucks are bring-ing water in for constructionpurposes, but there are noarrangements with Israel asyet to provide water to thecity.

Bashir believes thatPM Netanyahu is usingaccess roads and water asnegotiating chips with thePalestinian Authority in thepeace negotiations, thus thedelay of arrangements, hetold us with bitterness andfrustration.

Criticism of the pro-ject has come from twoquarters. West bank Jewishsettlers complain thatPalestinians are buildingnew homes by the thou-sands while the expansionof their settlements (nay –illegal “outposts”) is con-strained. Orint Flint, a set-tler of Ateret (an illegal “out-post” built in defiance ofIsraeli government policybut with Israel compliance)said: “It feels like unfairtreatment of Jewish resi-dents.” (The Guardian,August 8, 2013)

part of the BDS campaign(Boycott, Divestment andSanctions against Israel)who charge that Bashir al-Masri and otherPalestinian business peo-ple are helping to “white-wash [Israel’s] ongoingoccupation, colonizationand apartheid against thePalestinian people” bycooperating with Israeliindustry and consultingwith Israeli architects andengineers.

Al-Masri told us thatsupport is coming to himfrom every quarter, includ-ing internationally famous

Israeli architect MosheSafdie who volunteered tohelp in any way he couldbecause he was moved andimpressed by the scope andvision of the project and itsimportance to the futurestate of Palestine.

I see no down sidefor the Palestinians andIsrael because Rawabi willbe a stabilizing element fora state of Palestine. Bashirsaid that though he ishappy to contribute toPalestinian nation building,he is not motivated here byaltruism. He is a businessman and out to make aprofit.

With so much capi-tal pouring into the westbank from Qatar and else-where, the Palestinians willhave too much to lose tobreak cavalierly an agree-ment with Israel. The PAhas shown, in this regard, its ability to coordinatesecurity with Israel, andthis is what Bashir iscounting on in a two-stateagreement.

I pray Rawabi suc-ceeds as its success will benot only a success forPalestine, but for Israel aswell!

The home"is simple in its appoint-ments and commands amagnificent highlandpanorama," he wrote. "HerrHitler in principle deteststhe big cities, where 'thehouses are thick and thesewers annoy the air.' Winkler is blocking publica-tion of an investigativereport that would reveal"the hidden financial tiesbetween one of the wealthi-est men in China and thefamilies of top Chinese lead-ers."

In a recent confer-ence call with Bloombergreporters in Hong Kong,Winkler reportedly said, "Ifwe run the story, we'll bekicked out of China."Winkler said he had read alot about foreign journalistsworking under the ThirdReich and wanted to formu-late a strategy for staying inChina as long as possible.

Winkler's fears ofChinese government retalia-tion are not far-fetched. Inresponse to unflatteringarticles about China pub-lished by Bloomberg andthe New York Times inrecent years, the Chineseregime has refused residen-cy visas for new journalistsfrom both organizations andhas sometimes blockedChinese citizens' access totheir web sites. This sort ofbehavior is par for thecourse among dictator-ships.

Editors understand-ably want access. But thedesire for access can cor-rupt. Going easy on dicta-tors may ensure access tothe country in question, butit also sometimes results inreporters writing puff piecesthat bolster the regime.

A classic example isthe case of Adolf Hitler'svacation home.

In November 1938,the British magazine Homes& Gardens published afawning feature story aboutHitler's house in theBavarian Alps. "This bright, airy chalet…commands thefairest view of all Europe," itdeclared. In his speech, Rabbi Marvin Hier,Dean and Founder of the Jewish Human RightsNGO, raised the continuing threats from terroristsand rogue nations, like Iran. “There is no greatervirtue in Judaism than peace or Shalom. But peaceis attainable,…only if one is willing to makechanges.” There are some nations who can’t com-promise. That’s what Chamberlain forgot in 1938when he returned from Munich with his ‘Peace inour time’. Only Churchill understood who Hitlerreally was. If not for him, today’s audience withYour Holiness and a delegation from the SimonWiesenthal Center could never have taken place”.Turning to the resurgence of anti-Semitism, RabbiHier declared, “Seventy-five years after the infa-mous Kristallnacht pogrom (the night of brokenglass), a poll commissioned by the respected EbertFoundation estimates that 150 million Europeansstill harbor anti-Jewish sentiment”. In hisremarks, Pope Francis reaffirmed his condemna-tion “of all forms of anti-Semitism” adding, the“problem of intolerance must be confronted in allits forms…{including} the marginalization and thevery real persecutions which not a few Christiansare undergoing in various countries”.

We Extend Greetings for Chanukah toOur Jewish Friends in

HAMILTON AND BURLINGTONMay your celebration be a joyous occasion

and the year ahead a healthy and happy one.

Still, many remainedskeptical. There were con-sistent rumours thatMueller had fled north afterthe war. Adolf Eichman toldinterrogators after his cap-ture that Mueller,Eichman’s commandingofficer, was still alive. Alliedintelligence reports came tothe same conclusion.

But JohannesTuchel, a Berlin politicalscientist, has confirmedbeyond any doubt thatMueller was buried withsome 2400 other unidenti-fied corpses in the Jewishcemetery. Tuchel hasfound written evidence in areport about the discoveryand identification ofMueller’s body in a provi-sional grave in August of1945. Andreas Nachama, head of the Topography ofTerror archive and memori-

al located at the site of theformer Gestapo headquar-ters in Berlin, says thatMueller’s photo ID was stillin his uniform pocket.

Nachama, a rabbi andthe former head of the BerlinJewish community, suggest-ed moving the body out of theJewish cemetery but the ideawas rejected on halachicgrounds. If Mueller’s gravewere moved there was everylikelihood that historic Jewishgraves would be damaged. There appears to be nosolution to this obvious“tasteless monstrosity.”

Nonoo’s appointmentsignalled Bahrain’s willing-ness to cultivate ties with theWest. She appeared regular-ly at Jewish functions in theWashington area.

Bahrain’s Jewishcommunity today numbersbetween 36 and 50 people. The modern communitydates back from the begin-ning of the 20th centurywhen families immigratedfrom Baghdad in Iraq. At itsheight there were over 600Jews in Bahrain.

Bahrain is the onlyPersian Gulf state with asynagogue and while theGovernment has not enact-ed any laws specifically pro-tecting Jews, it has notinterfered with the right toreligious freedom. KingHamad ibn Al Khalifa hashelped ensure that Jewscan live productive lives in

Bahrain. The Palestinianissue has created someanti-Semitism in Bahrainbut it has not yet become aserious problem for theJewish community.

THE PARKING LOT OF THE RAMI LEVY SUPER-market at Sha’ar Benjamin has Israeli andPalestinian cars parked side by side. Both Israelisand Palestinians living in the West Bank roam thestore’s aisles in search of better prices. The PA dis-courages its citizens from buying goods from anIsraeli-owned company but that does not deterthem from both shopping - and working - at thethree Rami Levy markets. Recent attacks on Israelisettlers in the West Bank have led some to arguethat Palestinians travelling freely in the West Bankshould be subject to more intense scrutiny.

reparation of the victims ofterror in her diplomaticeffort with the Iranianregime in the most currentround of negotiations. Asthe negotiations with Iranled by Under SecretarySherman continue, we callon Congress to ensure thatthe U.S. government isworking to keep the inter-ests of the terror victims’families on the table.

As a result of law-suits taken by Americanvictims of terror in U.S.courts, the Iranian regimecurrently owes billions ofdollars from decades of ter-rorist activity resulting indozens of victims and sev-ered families. This debt hasyet to be recognized or paidby the Iranian governmentwith no sign of an intentionto do so.

Our letter called forjustice. We wrote that “Iranmust not be allowed underany circumstances to avoidmaking payment of repara-tions and due compensa-tions to the families of thosewhose lives they havedestroyed through terror-ism…and through the terrororganizations it supports:Hamas, Islamic Jihad andHezbollah”.

Our letter called forthe abandonment of crimi-

nal activity and remindedUnder Secretary Sherman, that “if Iran truly desires tobe reinstated as a memberof the international commu-nity, it must certainly aban-don its criminal behav-iors…”

Moreover, we calledon Sherman to learn fromthe lessons of U.S. foreignpolicy towards Libya, ratherthan North Korea. PresidentGeorge W. Bush movedtoward an improvement inrelations with the Libyangovernment with the repeal-ing of any sanctions condi-tional upon the payment ofreparations to the victims ofLibyan terror. This moveresulted in the payment of$1.5 billion dollars to thefamilies of victims.Conversely, we warnedwhat might happen if repa-rations are ignored as wasthe case with North Korea. When North Korea wasremoved from the list ofState Sponsors of Terrorismin 2008, the victims ofNorth Korean terrorismwere simply thrown beneaththe bus and a “deal” wasstruck, without compensa-tion being paid to theseAmerican families.

We fear this lack ofresponse not only portendsa potential Iranian exemp-

But it apparentlysees no need to take disci-plinary action againstsomeone who insists that“God will always be a part ofthe U.S.military”

Mikey Weinstein, who founded the MilitaryFreedom Foundation orMRFF, doesn’t buy the AirForce Academy’s argumentthat because Willoughbymight have been speakingin his personal capacity andnot as a representative ofthe Academy that no actionis required. “We want anapology to me, my familyand the foundation,” saidWeinstein. “And we wanthim disciplined.”
