Hear the past

See the present

Touch The Future

The logo is a graphic representation of the vision,

sound and action that can be experienced at

the Centre. Bold, modern and dynamic, this

symbol depicts clearly the numerous activities

that are in store and evokes feelings of fun and

enjoyment for the visitors. The hand, eye and

ear icons represent the hands-on experience and

lifelike simulations which visitors can feel, see

and hear at the Centre. The sparks represent

new discoveries and knowledge as senses come

into contact with the exhibits.

To inspire in Singaporeans a sense of confidence in the future of

Singapore and in the SAF by:

Enhancing awareness of our nation's milestones and achievements

and the part citizens play in ensuring national survival, security

and success so as to instil in them a sense of pride in Singapore's

achievements.

Giving Singaporeans an opportunity to think about the future and

what is needed for our next generation to continue with the peace

and prosperity enjoyed so as to prepare our citizens to meet the

challenges of the future.

Since the events of 11 September 2001 and the arrest of members of Jemaah Islamiah for

terrorism-related activities, Singaporeans have had to come to terms with a more uncertain

environment. The security, economic and social scenarios have changed dramatically. As a

nation, we are possibly living in the most challenging period in our history since independence.

In such an environment, National Education plays a vital role in bringing Singaporeans together.

A good understanding of how we have overcome major challenges in the past would give us the

confidence to deal with the challenges we encounter today. The Singapore Discovery Centre,

as a National Education hub for Singapore, is well-positioned to make a significant contribution

to this effort through our programmes and activities.

THE YERR IN PERSPECTIVE

During the period in review, the realities of the economic downturn and the aftermath of the

September 11 attacks have re-affirmed the need for SDC to embark on new initiatives and

programmes to add value and bring fresh appeal to the Centre. These included bringing SDC

out to the people - roadshows and special performances were held at several locations throughout

Singapore, arousing widespread interest in the Centre - while drawing more visitors to the

Centre through innovative activities. A novel night event, "Galaxy Of Lanterns" was held in

September 2001 to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Our Education Department continued to reach out to students across the nation, imparting

important National Education messages in interesting and engaging ways. A total of 83,097

students visited the Centre in FY 2001, and another 221,940 students - an increase of more

than 200% over the previous year - were able to experience the SDC's educational initiatives

right in their schools, through roadshows, external classroom programmes, and special events.

...the realities of the economic downturn and the aftermath

of the September 11 attacks have re-affirmed the need for

SDC to embark on new initiatives and programmes to add

value and bring fresh appeal to the Centre.

THE F U T U R E

Major plans are underway to redevelop the SDC into the next "edu-tainment" centre of the

future. This undertaking, which has been made possible with the support of the Singapore

Totalisator Board, will see new, state-of-the-art exhibits and attractions grace the halls and

galleries of the redeveloped Centre. For the immediate future, we will continue to add new

titles and exhibitions to the Centre as part of our ongoing efforts to keep improving and evolving,

so that our attractions remain fresh and appealing. We are entering a truly exciting time for the

Centre, and the future promises to be bold and bright.

T H R N K YOU

I wish to thank members of the SDC Board of Directors and Steering Committee for their

guidance and input in helping the Centre realise its mission. I would also like to express my

appreciation to our sponsors, Singapore Armed Forces, Singapore Police Force, Singapore Civil

Defence Force, schools and corporations for their kind support and co-operation, and to the

management and staff of SDC for their hard work and commitment in making the Centre the

place that it is today.

COMMEMORATIVE DAYS • International Friendship Day (April 2 0 0 1 )

Internat ional Fr iendship Day keeps local

students aware of our relationship with other

nations. A colourful and informative exhibition

was put together to introduce customs of other

countries. SDC collaborated with embassies of

Korea, Hungary, Cambodia, Israel, Mexico and

Turkey, to name a few. Apart from displays of

unique cultural artefacts and scenic posters,

lively cultural dances were performed. A high

number of s tuden ts , both local and

provided the opportunity for cross-cultural

exchange between them.

• Racial Harmony Day (July 2 0 0 1 )

A total of 6 ,146 visitors viewed the insightful exhibits telling the story of how our immigrant

society grew and developed to become the prosperous and harmonious multi-racial nation

that we know and live in today. Different cuisines, cultures and religions were presented and

students jazzed up the event with colourful cultural performances.

• National Day (August 2 0 0 1 )

ACS (Independent) paid SDC and SAFTI a special visit for this occasion. The boys were

given a talk and taken on a guided tour around SAFTI. This was followed by a series of

National Education activities at SDC.

• Total Defence Day (February 2 0 0 2 )

Through a range of experiential learning activities, games, quizzes and talks, students were

able to learn about the five aspects of Total Defence. Much excitement also surrounded the

special Total Defence edition of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire", which was an effective

way of engaging students on the subject matter.

SPECIAL E V E N T S

From specially arranged forums, skits and

carnivals, SDC's efforts with the different schools

and institutions continued to be well-received.

TEMASEK POLYTECHNIC NE FORUM

(JULY 2001)

Speakers for the day included Colonel Leslie Terh

and renowned local writer Mr Goh Sin Tub. Also

on the programme was a light-hearted NE skit

and an upbeat NE rap performance which

certainly got audiences' attention.

ITE CARNIVAL (AUGUST 2001)

in the west, SDC hosted a fun- f i l led and

Apart from single school outings, special arrangements were also made with cluster schools.

Each cluster consists of ten to fifteen schools, and these collaborations promoted ties between

them.

NE events, games and carnivals at various schools. In the coming year, schools can look forward

to even more involvement from SDC in their promotion of National Education.
