It is mostimportant thnt a distinction should bedrawn betweenin, thuctionand drill.

During the former the languageused should be as simple aspossible, andthemeaningof all technicaltermswhich arenecessaryshould be carefully explained. A conversationaltone should beadopted, andunder no circumstanceswhatever shouldanything inthe natureof long quotations from drill books be allowed. Themen should be permitted to assumean easy attitude and theirinterestshould not beallowed to flag. Theyshouldbeencouragedin thefullest possibledegreeto askquestions.

At drill on the contrary the most rigid tlisciphne must bemaintained, ordersmust lie clear, decisiveand emphatic, and thedetachmentsmade to work steadily, smartly, and rapidly. At thesametime theutmostaccuracyis essential, andaiiy deviationfromthe methodslaid downmust beat oncestrictly checked.

Thefollowing instructionsare arrangedso thatall work carriedout by eachindividualmemberof adetacinnentis groupedtogether.Thoseparagraphsmarkedwith an asteriskshould not howeverbetaughtuntil thedrill hasbeenlearnt.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS.

This instruction should take the form of practical demonstra-tionsdealingwith the work of each man of the detachment, andall men underinstruction should, jn turn, carryout the work ofeachparticularnumber.

Oncethe work of eachnumberhasbeenthoroughlymastered,it shouldnot takelong for the recruit to learnthe actualdrill.

He mustbe carefulto ascertainthat oil is not leaking from thebuffer throughthe packing. A leakagemay be detectedby meansof two holesunderneaththeouter springcase, onein front andonein rear. A leakageof oil is liable to causea seriousaccidentto theequipmentduringfiring.

Instructions for filling the buffer are shownon a metal plateon tile cradle.

3. He only gives the words of command shown for him inSection GunDrill. His executiveordersshould beno louder thanis necessaryfor his sub-sectionto hear, but when assistingto passordersdown thebattery, they shouldbegiven out sufficiently loudto ensurethem getting through.

8.~When a ~an is in actionon a forward slopo or a high angleof elevation is likely to be requiredit is always advisableto dig inthetrail.

No. 1 mustseethis donewithout waiting for orders.7. In orderto find the highestelevationat which theguncanbe

fired withoutdigging in the trail thegun must be elevatedas faras possible, andthe angleof sight placed on the longitudinallevel(or if noangleof sight hasbeenorderedit mustbesetto zero). The

In doing so he should make allowance for any newdeflection ordcre~T. In order that the trail may be moved asquickly aspossible2 mustassistat the right gun wheeland 3 takehis weight off tine layer’sseat.

10. He shouldram homesmartly so that 4 may not haveto waitin order to insert the cartridge. He should be ready with thehead of the rammeras soon as tine head of the shell is iii thebreech, and push the shell off 4’s left hand which acts as a loadingtray. The ramming homemust be drnie with sufficient force toensuretine driving baudmeetingthe rifling.

11. When thespadehasengagedand a new deflection is orderedhe shouldimmediately placeit on the traversing scalewhile 3 issettingthe sight. If the trail has beenmovedcorrectly it shouldnot thenbe necessaryfor 3 to direct bins to traverse.

12. Whenfiring atatargetcrossingthe front thetrail gearshouldbeset for the first round so as to give the greatest traverse in thedirection which the target is moving, i.e., target moving from rightto left, movelever to the left, and vicevcracl.

13. On coming into action he must see that the wagon iscorrectly placed alongside his gun ininnediatcly tine latter ispointing iii therequireddirection.
