t The Junior Galway Film Fleadh has come of age. For more than two decades we have endeavored
to provide young people with not only an understanding of cinema but a sense of how it can
communicate and challenge complex and important concepts. Above all else, however, we wanted to
capture something of the magic and wonder that cinema can inspire in all of us, children and adults
alike, through a programme that entertains, engages, educates and enchants.
21 years on and we’re a little bit older, wiser and more mature but, like most 21 year olds, that doesn’t
mean we’ve grown up. If anything we have more of a youthful energy. This is in large part due to our Youth
Council whose zest, passion and love of cinema keep us focused on what’s important: The Future.
Our audience and the filmmakers in our shorts programme represent the future of filmmaking
and, when they in turn come of age, we will be proud to have been there at the start. So join us as
we present a showcase of the best work for, from and about young people, alongside workshops,
screenings and events that celebrate the Future of Film.

Mariame (an incendiary, star-making performance from Karidja
Touré) is a shy 16-year-old who lives with her mostly absent
mother, a domineering older brother, and two younger sisters
whom she takes the burden of caring for. Left behind at high
school where she’s told her grades are too poor to continue,
Mariame is soon lured out of her shell by three vivacious
neighborhood teens. Enthralled by their bravado and brash
energy, Mariame quickly adopts their flashier look and adapts to
their bolder and often reckless behavior, making both foolish and
brave choices as she struggles towards independence.
Depicting a side of Paris rarely explored on screen, Girlhood
finds irresistible energy in these young characters for whom
attitude is everything. Featuring sumptuous cinematography
and a jubilant soundtrack, the film builds momentum with every
scene, and exudes life from every frame.

Landfill Harmonic follows the Recycled Orchestra of Cateura, a
Paraguayan musical youth group of kids that live next to one of
South America’s largest landfills. This unlikely orchestra plays
music on instruments made entirely out of recycled rubbish.
When their story goes viral, the orchestra is catapulted into the
global spotlight. With the guidance of their music director, they
must navigate this new world of arenas and sold out concerts.
However, when a natural disaster devastates their community,
the orchestra provides a source of hope for the town. The film is a
testament to the transformative power of music and the resilience
of the human spirit.

STwenty-four students, twenty-four nationalities, one classroom.
Hailing from Ireland, Senegal, Brazil, Morocco, Chinese and more
these students are between eleven and fifteen years old and
have just arrived in France. For a year they will be together in the
same ‘reception class’ of a Parisian secondary school, under the
supervision of their inspirational teacher. In this multicultural
arena, we see the innocence, the enthusiasm and inner turmoil of
these teenagers who must face the challenges of beginning a new
life, learning a new language and adapting to a different culture.
In doing so they challenge our preconceived notions and give us
hope for a better world and a better future.

The director of Downfall returns with this drama, based on true
events, about Carpenter Georg Elser who tried to assassinate
Der Fuhrer as he was addressing a Nazi Party meeting. The
film depicts some scenes of torture and violence as Elser is
interrogated as well as presenting his motivation. Its English title
– 13 Minutes – comes from the mistiming of an explosive device
that would have undoubtedly changed history if its detonation
had been accurate.
