Leading Better Care was launched in 2008 and recognised the significant role Senior Charge Nurses, Senior Charge Midwives and Team Leaders have within the NHS. Refocusing these roles has supported the delivery of high quality safe, effective and person centred care, as highlighted in the Healthcare Quality Strategy for NHS Scotland.

We are seeking a Research Fellow to contribute to Leading Better Care in Lanarkshire a collaborative programme between University of the West of Scotland and NHS Lanarkshire. This exciting and innovative collaboration is fully engaged in and focused on the development of clinical leadership.

A PhD in a relevant subject is essential for the post. Applicants should have knowledge and experience of conducting research. Working on collaborative projects, including project management experience is also desirable. The successful candidate will be highly organised, able to work independently, and will show a high degree of initiative and enthusiasm.

Key Result Areas:

Conduct research activities using standard research techniques and methods in order to play a significant part in achieving the key aims and objectives of the Leading Better Care Programme.Liaise and maintain good relations with UWS and NHS Lanarkshire to achieve the aims of the programme.Conduct literature and database searches using appropriate search strategy/terms.Critically appraise relevant literature to develop a literature review.Data collection: supervise collection of data as per protocol Data entry and analysis.Prepare information/papers for the Programme Board, Research and Evaluation Subgroup and other relevant forums/meetings. Present research project progress reports and outcomes to internal and external stakeholders.In conjunction with colleagues within UWS and NHS Lanarkshire, prepare and submit articles for publications as required.

Planning and Organising:

Planning and Organising

Work closely with Line Manager, Programme Manager and key colleagues within UWS and NHS Lanarkshire. Plan and organise recruitment and protocol implementation effectively and efficiently. Work on own initiative prioritising workload to ensure achievement of research activities and project deadlines.Coordinate workload with Line Manager, Programme manager and colleagues within UWS as well as NHS Lanarkshire to avoid duplication of workload and conflict. Develop effective communication strategies with UWS and NHS Lanarkshire. Data collection, data analysis, writing up of findings and dissemination of findings.Use research resources/facilities as appropriate.

Decision making

Deal with protocol implementation problems which may affect the delivery of, or the achievement of research objectives and deadlines. Contribute to decisions affecting the outcomes of the programme. Authority to take decisions will be within the constraints of the research protocol and also University procedures appropriate to the grade.Contribute to decision-making alongside Line Manager, Programme manager and key colleagues within UWS and NHS Lanarkshire, the most appropriate way to overcome difficulties that may arise in order to achieve the programme outcomes.Analyse and interpret the results of research and contribute to the generation of original ideas based on outcomes.

Working Relationships:

Collaborate with clinicians and researchers inside and outside of the University.

Liaise with colleagues and support staff in NHS Lanarkshire and within the School of Health, Nursing and Midwifery, in UWS on research matters.

Provide guidance, support and assistance to administrative staff supporting the project.

Develop knowledge and understanding, and form relationships with internal/external stakeholders and contacts for future collaboration where appropriate.

Actively participate as a research team member.

As appropriate attend and contribute to the Leading Better Care Programme Board, Subgroups and other relevant meetings.

Demonstrate an awareness of ethical issues pertaining to the research process and consideration to others.
