Bajaj Auto is a major Indian automobile manufacturer started by a Rajasthani merchant. It is based in Pune, Maharashtra, with plants in Chakan (Pune), Waluj (near Aurangabad) and Pantnagar in Uttaranchal. The oldest plant at Akurdi (Pune) now houses the R&D centre Ahead. Bajaj Auto makes and exports motorscooters, motorcycles and the auto rickshaw.

The Forbes Global 2000 list for the year 2005 ranked Bajaj Auto at 1946.[2]

Over the last decade, the company has successfully changed its image from a scooter manufacturer to a two wheeler manufacturer. Its product range encompasses scooterettes,

Page 2: 150 Cc Bikes in Indiarahul

scooters and motorcycles. Its real growth in numbers has come in the last four years after successful introduction of a few models in the motorcycle segment.

The company is headed by Rahul Bajaj who is worth more than US$1.5 billion.[3]

Bajaj Auto came into existence on November 29, 1945 as M/s Bachraj Trading Corporation Private Limited. It started off by selling imported two- and three-wheelers in India. In 1959, it obtained license from the Government of India to manufacture two- and three-wheelers and it went public in 1960. In 1970, it rolled out its 100,000th vehicle. In 1977, it managed to produce and sell 100,000 vehicles in a single financial year. In 1985, it started producing at Waluj near Aurangabad. In 1986, it managed to produce and sell 500,000 vehicles in a single financial year. In 1995, it rolled out its ten millionth vehicle and produced and sold 1 million vehicles in a year.

According to the authors of Globality: Competing with Everyone from Everywhere for Everything, Bajaj has grown operations in 50 countries by creating a line of value-for-money bikes targeted to the different preferences of entry-level buyers.[4]

[edit] Spinoffs and acquisitions

The demerger of Bajaj Auto Ltd into three separate corporate entities—Bajaj Finserv Ltd (BFL), Bajaj Auto Ltd (BAL), and Bajaj Holdings and Investment Ltd (BHIL)—was completed with the shares listing on May 26, 2008.[6]

In November 2007, Bajaj Auto acquired 14.5% stake in KTM Power Sports AG (holding company of KTM Sportmotocycles AG). The two companies have signed a cooperation deal, by which KTM will provide the know-how for joint development of the water-cooled four-stroke 125 and 250 cc engines, and Bajaj will take over the distribution of KTM products in India and some other Southeast Asian nations.[7] Bajaj said it is open to taking a majority stake in KTM and is also looking at other takeover opportunities. On the 8th of January 2008, Managing Director Rajiv Bajaj confirmed the collaboration and announced his intention to gradually increase Bajaj's stake in KTM to 25%.[8] BAJAJ BYK -2002[clarification needed]

Bajaj has made a number of motorcycles, scooters and cars. Motorcycles in current production are the XCD, Platina, Discover, Pulsar and Avenger. Bajaj also produces many motorcycles for other manufacturers, such as the Kawasaki Ninja 250R,Cite error: Closing </ref> missing for <ref> tag; see the help page [9] Cars include the Bajaj ULC ultra-low-cost car.

[edit] Low cost cars

Bajaj Auto says its $2,500 car, which it is building with Renault and Nissan Motor, will aim at a fuel-efficiency of 30 kilometres per litre (85 mpg-imp; 71 mpg-US) (3.3 L/100 km), or twice an average small car, and carbon dioxide emissions of 100 g/km.[10] The car is scheduled to be launched in 2012.[11]

It is a Tata Nano competitor. The Bajaj venture will have an initial capacity of 400,000 units, while Tata expects eventual demand of 1 million Nanos.

Bajaj Pulsar is a motorcycle brand owned by Bajaj Auto in India. The two wheeler was developed by the product engineering division of Bajaj Auto in association with motorcycle designer Glynn Kerr Tokyo R&D.[1] Currently there are four variants available -with engine capacities of 135 cc, 150 cc, 180 cc and 220 cc. Previously it was also offered with a 200cc DTS-i oil cooled engine, which now has been discontinued. More than a million units of Pulsar were sold by November 2005. With monthly sales of more than 48,000 units in June 2009, Pulsar is the leader in the 150 cc segment in India with a market share of 43%.[2]

[edit] History

Before the introduction of the Pulsar, the Indian motorcycle market trend was towards fuel efficient, small capacity motorcycles (that formed the 80-125 cc class). Bigger motorcycles with higher capacity virtually did not exist (except for Enfield Bullet). The launch and success of Hero Honda CBZ in 1999 showed that there was demand for performance bikes. Bajaj took the cue from there on and launched the Pulsar twins in India on November 24, 2001.[3] Since the introduction and success of Bajaj Pulsar, Indian youth began expecting high power and other features from affordable motorcycles.

The project was faced with internal resistance, reservations by Mckinsey and doubts on its effects on Bajaj's relation with Kawasaki. The project required approximately 36 months for completion and cost Bajaj Rs 1 billion.[4]

[edit] Evolution

[edit] 2001

The original Pulsar came with a 150 cc air-cooled, single-cylinder, petrol, spark-ignited four-stroke engine which made 12 bhp of maximum power. They featured a single spark plug to ignite the air-fuel mixture fed from a carburetor, simple spring shock absorbers, round headlamp dome and 1,265&mm wheelbase. Disc brakes as standard equipment was a novelty in Indian motorcycles of the early 2000s. Other standard features were parking lights and an aircraft-type fuel tank lid.

Page 6: 150 Cc Bikes in Indiarahul

The 180 cc version made 15 bhp of maximum power and came with a twin-tone horn, which was optional equipment on the 150 cc version. Electric Start (ES) was also offered as an option on both the bikes.[8]

[edit] 2003

2003 Model bajaj pulsar 150cc

The second generation Pulsars featured Bajaj Auto's newly developed DTSi technology, which increased the power rating of both versions by 1 bhp (0.75 kW) each and also increased fuel economy.[9] This model also introduce a new headlamp assembly, 1,320 mm wheelbase,[10] and standard twin-tone horn and trip meter.

[edit] 2005

In 2005, Bajaj launched another upgrade of the Pulsar. The bike was offered with 17-inch (430 mm) alloy wheels as standard option, and the stance was also lowered by about 12 mm. It was the first time any bike maker in India had offered 17-inch (430 mm) profile wheels at the rear. The fuel tank now had a capacity of only 15 litres.[11] The power output was now further increased to 13.5 bhp (10.1 kW) @ 8500 rpm for the 150 while it increased to 16.5 bhp (12.3 kW) @ 8500 rpm for the 180.[12] The rear shock absorbers were now gas-filled Nitrox absorbers.

The LCD screen introduced with the UG-3 version of the Pulsar

[edit] 2006

Bajaj introduced another version of Pulsar. New features included: pilot lamps separated from the main headlamp, turn indicators with clear lenses and amber bulb, self-cancelling turn indicator switch, flush LCD screen with digital read-out of key vehicle data, non-contact speed sensor, non-contact backlit switches, twin-stripe LED tail-light assembly and side panels altered for a sharp, tapering-towards-the-rear look. The engine had increased torque availability, reduced vibration and improved gear shift feel. They also introduced the 1 down 4 up variant of the gear box for the first time on sub-150 cc variants.[13]

The new headlamp design introduced for the entire Pulsar series in 2006

[edit] 2007Main article: Bajaj Pulsar 220 DTS-Fi

In July 2007, Bajaj began selling the Bajaj Pulsar 220 DTS-Fi and Pulsar 200 DTS-i, the former featuring fuel injection and oil cooled engines, a digital dash, and modern styling. This bike has some features which are totally new to the Indian market, like the fuel injection itself, rear disc brake and clip-on handlebars (the first two only available in the 220 model).

[edit] 2009

Bajaj released the UG IV (fourth upgrade) versions of the Pulsar 150 and Pulsar 180 in April 2009. The upgrades for the Pulsar 150 included an all-black theme, tank scoops similar to those on the Pulsar 200, a 3D Pulsar logo, and a changed electrical system (full DC). Power also increased from 13.5 bhp to 14.09 bhp (at 8,500 rpm).

Electrical enhancements like auto head light switch-off after few seconds of turning the engine off to protect the battery, self cancelling turn signals ,icon illumination (horn icon, indicator icon,

Page 8: 150 Cc Bikes in Indiarahul

engine cut off icon, etc.), side stand warning light, duel digital trip meter, low fuel warning light (which also flashes when the engine is revved too hard), and low battery indicator are common features among all the variants.

The Pulsar 180 received upgrades like wider tyres, split seat, tank scoops, clip-on handlebars, 3D Pulsar logo, swing arm suspension borrowed from Pulsar 200, and thicker forks. The power was increased to 17 PS.[14]

Bajaj launched a carbureted version of Pulsar 220 on June 2009, tagging it as "the fastest bike in India".[15] It also discontinued the production of Pulsar 200 on July 2009.

Bajaj also introduced a new Light Sports version of Pulsar named as Pulsar 135LS. It is the first bike in India to contain 4-valve DTS-i technology. It consists 4 smaller valves rather than 2 standard bigger valves, styling also is changed and looks become more aggressive. The bike is ARAI certified for 68.5kmpl and weights only 122 kg.

[edit] 2010

Bajaj released the UG 4.5 (fifth upgrade) versions of the Pulsar 150. The upgrades for the Pulsar 150 included an clip-on handlebars like those in Pulsar 135LS. Power also increased from 14.09 bhp to 15.06 bhp (at 9,000 rpm).

A naked version of Pulsar 220 is also launched, named as Pulsar 220S(Street Fighter) which retains everything from Pulsar 220 except the front fairing. Front fairing is similar to Pulsar 180/150. Old Pulsar 220 is now named as Pulsar 220F.

[edit] Technology

[edit] DTSi

DTSi stands for Digital Twin Spark Ignition, a Bajaj Auto trademark. Bajaj Auto holds an Indian patent for the DTSi technology.[citation needed] The Alfa Romeo Twin-Spark engines, the BMW F650 Funduro which was sold in India from 1995 to 1997 also had a twin-spark plug technology, and the Rotax motorcycle engines, more recently Honda's iDSI Vehicle engines use a similar arrangement of two spark-plugs. However very few small capacity engines did eventually implement such a scheme in their production prototypes.

[edit] Patent infringement allegations

In September 2007, Bajaj Auto filed a claim accusing that the development of TVS Flame was in violation of their patent for DTS-I.[16] TVS Motors countered by threatening to sue Bajaj Auto for libel.[17][18] On February 2008, the Madras High Court in Chennai restrained TVS from launching it with the twin spark plug technology.[19] TVS appealed against this decision, claiming that crucial evidence was not taken into account[20] and in March 2008, launched the Flame with a modified engine containing one spark plug.[21] The DTSi idea is a simple one to understand - it involved usage of two spark plugs (instead of one) per engine cylinder. On September 16, 2009

Page 9: 150 Cc Bikes in Indiarahul

the Supreme Court of India permitted TVS motors to manufacture and sell the 125cc TVS Flame with Twin Spark Technology.[22]

[edit] ExhausTEC

ExhausTEC stands for Exhaust Torque Expansion Chamber, a technology patented by Bajaj.[23] The technology involves use of a small chamber connected to the exhaust pipe of the engine to modify the back-pressure and the swirl characteristics, with an aim to improve the low-end performance of the bikes. The ExhausTEC technology is claimed to be highly effective in improving the low- and mid-range torque.[24]

Yamaha R15 looks like polio infected tyres.Made specially for the people with broken spectacles.Who feels great after paying lacks and above as if they own r6. So,guys go for pulsar,go for power.

The bike acceleration is amazing with fuel efficiency of 50-55 Km. I have used almost 4-5 bike in last 10 Years. And the most recent one is Pulsar 150 DTS-I, i.e. from 4 months. I am having certain doubts Or may be problems of my bike: The bike is smooth with pillion but in single seat at low speed of 15-30. I am getting feeling on my feet something is cranking like both front and rear chain wheels are not able adjust properly as they are to be required. The gear shifting is very hard, compare to unicorn, splondor. Is it the same for all pulsar ? As all my pulsar friends said the gear shift is very hard even for all bajaj models. We people bring home the new bike paying 70k and after that there is no service at all. This is absolutely ridiculous. We all should get united and put a complaint in the consumer forum, we should teach them a lesson.

If you see others review are also reveling same problems as.

1. self start problem: you find very interesting in starting but after few months you find the self starter is damaged or magnet is damaged and you don't find any option other then

Page 27: 150 Cc Bikes in Indiarahul

putting your bike in showroom and keep on waiting for the new starter which will be dispatched (nobody knows when) and you get only irritation. Same is happening with me.

2. Now there pulsar 200cc at every nook and corner of Baroda but if there is any problem you don't find the spare parts.

3. I face one more problem regarding the tyres getting auto punctured, don't know how..

4. To comply with your quality policy, pls revert back on my mail id..

I am very proud to own it and i am very much satisfied with it. But my sincere advice to Mr. Bajaj is that, the shape that pulsar has gained now is excellent and so dont go on modifying it and make it cumbersome. Better improve it technically

Page 38: 150 Cc Bikes in Indiarahul

rather than its asthetics. And one more problem that most of its owners face is poor abilities of the people at ur service centres. On behalf of many costumers of Pulsar, i advise you to provide better services at service centres or else you may lose goodwill of the costumers.

NAME : Senthilkumar ([email protected]), Coimbatore, Tamilnadu (India)POSTED ON : Friday, February 09, 2007 at 10:14:47REVIEW : Bajaj concentrates only in asthetic of vehicle and still the engine perfomance is very poor and troublesome. Its clutch system is the worst system compared to all other bikes in India. I brought my bike dtsi in 2005 and from the day one I have problem with the clutch. There is no service available and the service people in bajaj showrooms know only to wash and clean the vehicle. This technical problem is very major and bajaj has to look into it.My suggestion is Bajaj pulsar is good for keeping in show case and not for riding.

It is fabulous.. superb mileage, great look and real royal. I am so impressed that i will be going to purchase another one and this time 180 dtsi. Its mind blowing man. Pulsar is a bike for those whose passion is driving and not for the one whose need is driving.

NAME : AMIT ([email protected]), New Delhi, New Delhi (India)POSTED ON : Tuesday, October 17, 2006 at 03:39:40REVIEW : I HAVE BEEN WATCHING BAJAJ BIKES RIGHT FROM THE BEGINNING. THE FIRST ONE THAT IMPRESSED ME WAS CALIBER.THEN COMES THE PULSAR. REALLY COOL ONE. THEY HAVE CHANGED THE LOOKS AS WELL AS TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS IN A POSITIVE WAY. I HAVE GOT 150DTSI.2-3 DAYS BACK. I'VE SEEN NEW 180DTSI AND NEW HERO HONDA CBZ. THE LOOKS OF 180DTSI IS FAR AHEAD OF CBZ.THE HEAD LIGHT OF CBZ IS SIMILAR TO UNICORN AND THE TAIL LIGHT WITH KARIZMA, NOTHING NEW. ON THE OTHER HAND, THE HEAD LIGHT OF 180, BLACK ENGINE COLOUR, TAIL LIGHT LEDs, DIGITAL METER, SHARP BODY EDGES- ALL ARE REALLY COOL. THEN FINALLY YESTERDAY I HAVE BOOKED IT IN RED COLOUR COZ I VE GOT 150DTSI IN BLACK. I M REALLY IMPRESSED WITH THIS BAJAJ BIKE. LAST BUT NOT THE LEAST IS 225 CC DTS-FI. THE TECHNICAL AS WELL AS LOOKS ARE REALLY SPORTY. SO GUYS WAIT FOR THIS FLYING MACHINE!!!!

NAME : SHARATHPOSTED ON : 19/9/2006REVIEW : THIS BIKE SUCKS.......GEAR HAS BEEN THE GREATEST PROBLEM IN THIS BIKE...IT IS UNSTABLE AT HIGHER SPEEDS

NAME : Manoj SoniPOSTED ON : 17/9/2006REVIEW : Bought Pulsar 150 DTSi just 2 weeks back after too much research on Unicorn/Apache & Pulsar finally bought Pulsar, I found its performance much better than other two competitors, Average 50+ really good for 150cc segment, Haven"t checked full speed due to run in period but its very smooth in handling, turning, cornering, great grip on road even in wet roads nowadays due to rain. Gear box is really improved in this new version, don"t have any complain about it, mirrors are not of good quality, they look cheap. Really confortable to ride, I bought 25 Kms in city traffic on a single drive and not unconfortable at all.

Page 42: 150 Cc Bikes in Indiarahul

My wife also enjoys riding as pillion, disc break does its work wonderfully, no skidding characteristics. All and all, powerful bike with decent mileage, bikeguru won"t ever suggest this bike because its common.

NAME : ChandrasekarPOSTED ON : 6/9/2006REVIEW : I bought my pulsar in 2004 and so far I have covered 22500 kms. For the first 1 year, the bike was in excellent condition, zooming in top speeds. I reached 110 in NH4 (Bangalore Chennai highway). But all my happiness of being a proud owner of Pulsar was shattered during the last 8 months of my experience with it. The Vehicle was Vibrating badly and none of the Service engineers in Bangalore and Chennai were able to fix the problem. The vehicle can go comfortably only at 50 KMPH beyond which it would start to shiver and I can feel it in my hands, legs every where.. I have spent close to 10K in the last 6 months and no body can fix the problem. One of my friend is also facing the same issue. The vehicle is not good beyond 20k KMS. I have decided to sell.. But I loved this bike...

NAME : A R AnsariPOSTED ON : 23/5/2006REVIEW : Where as I know about Bajaj Pulsar 150 DTSi it is a very nice bike and I like and love it very much it can be also modified and even it has a self starter which helps to save time.As it is a 4 stoke vehicle it does not cause any pollution in the air.Its a nice experience to buy and ride this nice bike and even it is very smooth it looks like a sporting bike if the tyres are changed and one more thing there is a disc bike in front and the tank capacity is 18.5 litres......

NAME : Madhav kumarPOSTED ON : 12/4/2006REVIEW : I bought Pulsar 150 5 months back. An excellent bike with vey good pickup and zero maintenance, a pure no problem bike. u really enjoy long drives without any fatigue. Enjoy Pulsar riding. Its definetely MALE.

NAME : Anurag Nath POSTED ON : 25/3/2006REVIEW : HI, I bought my PULSAR 150 on 26/10/03 from SOCIETY MOTORS KANPUR .They said that the bike will give me a mileage of 45 km/lit.before the first service but,u will be astonished to know that it is giving me an average of 51 km/lit.That too when i dont know much about driving bikes and how to get good mileage . The engine give a knocking sound when the speed is very low with respect to the gear.Hence that is your problem so, dont blame your PULSAR for that.IT HAS A GREAT LOOK TOO BESIDES OTHER

Page 43: 150 Cc Bikes in Indiarahul

QUALITIES.............

HENCE GO FOR IT.As compared to other bikes in its segment like CBZ,AMBITION,FIERO etc..,it has much bigger and wider look, which gives you a feeling of superiority

NAME : RajPOSTED ON : 13/2/2006REVIEW : Hi All!

I am honest bike lover and owner of the Pulsar 150 ES for more than an year now. It has delivered more than what I expected from it on more fronts than one, where as I must also agree that, with time, my expectations from this bike has increased and admittedly it has not been able to fulfill those. Looks, price, power, mileage, handling and that proud feeling of ownership is almost as good as any Pulsar owner would certify. But on retrospect there are certain points that we force ourselves to ignore just for our love for this vehicle.

1. Mr Bajaj, your dealers are either too high-headed or too inefficient to deal with us who have put in half a lakh indian bucks into your company for this bike.

2. Almost every Pulsar 150 owner looks forward to getting his bike modified, primarily the rear tyre, and very often the straighten handle bars too. Can"t we have it as a standard fittin. Come to think of it, this bike deserves it!

3. Why do we have to believe that Bajaj means compromise on quality. Can"t the company afford to have better quality checks on its assembly lines, specially with regard to the electrical fittings and speedo/milo meters?

4. That rear shock absorber MUST be made to absorb shocks even when the bike is ridden without a pillion.

5. This one is slightly offbeat, but I think that the oval mirrors should be fat on the outer side and not the inner side for a better view of the rear traffic, which is what they are meant to do other than looking in line with the shape of the bike.

Ignoring these finer details in the bike, which I honestly do for my plain love for this machine, this bike is everything what it promises, and everything that an indian biker on indian roads can think of.
