Next week, we will advertise for applications for Visual and Performing Arts scholarships for students entering Year 11 in 2013. We will also offer a Music Honours scholarship for talented musicians in any year group, who have achieved to AMEB Grade 6 or equivalent. In 2013, we will also offer an ‘All-Rounder’ scholarship for students who display a range of talents across both the academic and sporting dimensions. These awards will reward demonstrated excellence and be available to students in any year group. Criteria for these awards are explicit on the application form. Scholarship awards of up to 100% of tuition costs are on offer. Interested students should speak with the Heads of the relevant faculties (Visual Arts, Music or Drama) for more information. Application forms for each of these scholarships will be available on the College website on 1st June. Applications will close on 17 July. If you have an old mobile phone or two just lying around in your household, it would be great if you would send it in to school to be dropped in the ‘You Can’ collection box in the College’s main Reception area. The phones are being collected for the ‘You Can’ Youth Cancer research. Sony is offering some great prizes for schools that reach certain targets – 150, 400 or 700 phones. It sounds incredible, but in our disposable world, there seems to be plenty of disused phones in our homes. ‘You Can’ will sell the phones it collects to raise money for cancer research. You can read more about ‘You Can’ at www.youcanschools.org.au Please get behind this initiative. I must remind parents that the Disabled bays at the front of the school are for genuinely disabled drivers. Cars parking in those bays must display a Disabled registration tag. This is a matter of courtesy to those who genuinely need to park in those bays. I have had an expression of interest from a male Chilean student who is interested in spending November – March at Bishop Druitt College. This would be a homestay arrangement, for which a homestay family would receive payment. It is an unusual time of year, encompassing the Christmas holidays, but matches the Chilean summer holidays. If you are interested in knowing more about this opportunity, please contact me via e-mail [email protected] Thank you to all of those students who participated in the NCIS Cross Country at Fingal Beach on Monday. Special thanks to Mr Webber and Mrs Hilton for their hard work in their organization of the event and for looking after our competitors. Congratulations to Nathan Mark (11) and Michael Graham-Higgs (10) who competed in the national titles for Field Class target shooting at Grafton last weekend Michael won several medals over the weekend in both B Grade and Junior competition (unfortunately equipment failure on Saturday denied him more!) Nathan is now the C Grade National champion. His score was so good he would have been runner up champion in B Grade. Well done also to Annelies Bleechmore, (4M) who won First Prize at the Coffs Harbour Show “Painting Age 9 - 13” for her canvas of “The Kookaburra”. Congratulations also to Calum Ball (9) and Jeb Freeman (11) who have been selected in the NSW Country Junior Rugby Union Under 15 and Under 17 teams respectively for this season’s representative program. From the commencement of Term 2, the Chaplains have led the students through Chapel services that have celebrated Jesus’ resurrection. The Junior Primary students have been learning about just how much God loves us all through the stories revealed in Jesus according to John’s Gospel. We also talked about the images that Jesus shared with his disciples and in particular our Gospel reading that referred to John 15:5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing.” We talked about the strength and support of a good vine and the nutrients and pruning required to ensure that the branches bear good fruit as we continued to discuss the alternatives of what would be the purpose of a vine that didn’t ever produce anything that was good. It’s the same for each one of us. There is a message of hope and when the going gets tough and we find ourselves in the middle of the struggles of everyday life. Sometimes we feel like we’re being pruned, sometimes we may even feel like giving up, sometimes we feel it’s unfair, but I urge you to remember these words “I am the vine, you are the branches” and trust in the gardener who knows what is needed to nurture us. The promise revealed for us is to stay connected to God and God will stay connected to us, we may need a little reminder every now and then, but just like the grapevine we can rely on being shaped regularly to ensure abundant growth in our lives through Christ Jesus. THe Power oF LAngUAgeWe have had a push recently across the Secondary school to make students aware of inappropriate language and the context in which any type of language is used. It is imperative for our students to remember that it is never appropriate to use inappropriate language (such as homophobic connotations) or to swear in a public forum. This includes class time, in the school yard, public transport and through the use of social media. This issue is being normalised by the exposure to inappropriate language in the media and through social networks, yet this should not make it right. Please assist us in this endeavor to retain our high standards as an independent school in the Anglican tradition, by discussing this with your children.

In 1768-70 Captain James Cook undertook an expedition with two aims: to seek the “unknown southern land” and to observe the Transit of Venus across the Sun from Tahiti, in order to determine the size of the solar system and the A.U.

Transits of Venus are rare. The last one was in 2004; the next will be on 6 June this year between 8.30am - 2.30pm; then we have to wait another 105 years! So this is the last opportunity to see one in our lifetimes. Transits of Venus occur in a pattern that repeats every 243 years with pairs of transits eight years apart separated by gaps of 121½ years and 105½ years.

On behalf of the Institution of Surveyors NSW, the local representative, Michael Lamont, is generously donating a Solar Scope to BDC - an instrument used to observe the event safely. As we all know, it is NOT safe for our eyes to stare directly at the Sun to observe the transit of Venus across its face. Michael is also donating his time and expertise on 6 June to help selected senior students use the Solar Scope to witness this rare event.

For more information go to http://www.transitofvenus.com.au

icAS Science competition

We read in Galatians 5:22-23, Paul is speaking to the people from the Church at Galatia and says to have faith and then encourages them to let the spirit direct their lives, for what our human nature wants is opposed to what the spirit wants. He goes on and outlines the fruit/rewards of living their lives in the spirit and the outcomes that they can achieve by making these changes. “But the Spirit produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, humility and self-control. There is no law against such things as these.”

Throughout our journey may we grow and reap the good harvest as we too discover Jesus together.

Date claimer: CCCC’s are meeting at Beachstone Café at Sapphire, on June 2 at 2.30pm. You are invited to come along as we chat in community over a cup of coffee and cake. Last week it was reported in this newsletter that Year 6 were studying cultures that have been influential in creating Australian culture as we see it today.

Many cultures were listed but one vital one was omitted… Aboriginal culture. This was done on purpose. Often students forget that Aboriginal people were here before the white settlers and that their ancient culture is an important influence on modern Australian culture.

The students in Year 6 received a (pretend) letter from a BDC community member expressing their outrage at the omission of Aboriginal culture. They were warned that if they did not rectify the situation a protest march would take place. The students then needed to work together to find a way to include this culture in the museum. This complication proved a valuable lesson for the students, as they have discovered that there is more to modern Australian culture than they were originally aware, and that working as part of a team can help them solve problems.

Over the weekend the Music Department held the Brass, Woodwind and String Soirees which showcased students’ eisteddfod performance pieces. These events were well attended and the students and audiences had a really enjoyable time. Thank you for your continued support of Music at Bishop Druitt College. If there are any parents who took some decent photos of these performances, we would appreciate copies.

Thank you to everyone who helped in making these events a success!

The dates for the HSC Music Enrichment Camp at Southern Cross University, Lismore are: Sunday 3rd June 2012 to Monday 4th June 2012

Music students in Year 11 and 12 will have the opportunity to participate in workshops in performance, musicology, aural and composition. University lecturers, HSC examiners and music teachers run these workshops. Students will be able to present their works, gain feedback from the examiners as well as hear other HSC students’ works.

Please meet at the College, in the front car park at 5:15am on Sunday 3 June for a 5:30am departure. Students are expected to return to the College by approximately 5:30pm on Monday 4 June.

Tuesday 29 May is Open Day at the College. There will be Music on the Music Lawn for morning tea at 10:00am. Secondary Choir and Superstrings will be performing in the College Theatre starting at 10:30am. We would like invite students of Woodwind and/or Brass to also perform. If your child would like to participate please call the Music Office.

Congratulations to Emily Malouf, Emily Robertson, Eleanor Leal, Sarah Bamford, Lauren Fraser and Alanna Fraser who represented NCIS at the NSWCIS Basketball trials held in Castle Hill on the 11 May. The girls teamed up with players from Riverina and Sydney schools to compete against other independent school teams from around NSW.

Girls and boys BDC teams played against teams from Mont Dore in New Caledonia. These games were a warm up for the Mont Dore teams before they play representative games against Coffs Harbour. The girls had a victory in their game and the boys went down after a hard fought battle. Well done to both teams.

On Thursday 17 May, 48 students (29 Secondary and 19 Primary) journeyed to Fingal Head to compete in the NCIS Regional Cross Country Championships. It was a warm day, which made for pretty tough racing conditions. 28 students qualified for the CIS event in Sydney. Chelsea Williams, Akashya Leopold, Tom Sweeney and Luke Judd, were age champions from Primary and Danielle McMahon, Romany Seeman, Tenielle Stubbs, Emily Malouf, Kalina Bennett and Toby McCann were age champion for Secondary.
