The profiles in this year’s report highlight some of the many ways that Schenectady ARC assists people to live the lives they want. The theme for this year’s Annual Report, “Myself, My World, My Dreams” comes from the Council on Quality and Leadership (CQL) and their unique method of measuring quality and helping agencies like Schenectady ARC stay focused on their mission. This past year was a remarkable year for Schenectady ARC, a year with accomplishments that will provide the foundation for many more remarkable years in the future.

One of our most significant accomplishments was being accredited by CQL. Many families, self-advocates and community partners were involved in the week-long accreditation visit, which culminated in the development of a Plan for Person Centered Excellence and the announcement of our accreditation. This capped almost two years of training staff, educating our Board and our families, interviewing the people we support, and reviewing our policies to make sure that our operations and our programs are in line with our mission to help people achieve their dreams and aspirations.

Another notable accomplishment was the opening of Prater House, our twenty-second home. Opening Prater House allowed us to offer residential opportunities for six individuals who had previously lived at O.D. Heck Developmental Center. In an era of limited residential development, this was a tremendous achievement.

At the end of 2014, the agency applied for two Balancing Incentive Program (BIP) grants: one was a collaboration with five other local ARC’s, while the other was focused just on Schenectady. We were awarded both grants, a total of more than $1.1 million. The collaborative grant will help us develop and implement a framework for planning, a true person-centered approach to helping individuals identify their goals and develop plans for achieving them. The second grant will help us implement an “agency management platform”, an electronic, cloud based record system that will allow us to convert virtually all of our documents to an electronic format.

Both of these grants are important to prepare us for the future. But, while we celebrate these achievements, we also celebrate the everyday accomplishments that highlight our agency and the people we support—the person who moves into a new apartment or gets a new job. The recreation program that brings together friends every week. The self-advocates’ trip to Albany to speak to legislators. The award-winning arrangement from our horticulture program. The volunteers at the City Mission. The list is long!

All of our accomplishments are possible because of the tremendous people who make up Schenectady ARC. Our Board members, employees, families, and volunteers work together every day to help us achieve our mission. Please join us in celebrating these events, and think about joining us, as a volunteer, a staff person, or a donor, and becoming part of our story for the coming years. Thank you!
