By Gresham Madhan

15 Min> What are you studying and where?GM> Journalism and Media at INTEC College in Durban. I’ve already got my Certificate in Journalism and will start with my Diploma soon.

15 Min> Why did you choose to study this?GM> Writing has always been my most superior passion. A Journalist should possess characteristics of integrity, empathy, curiosity and courage. These qualities perfectly embody my persona and that is my reason for heading into this exciting yet challenging field.

15 Min> What is your plan once you are done?GM> Being qualified as a hardcore Journalist can open many doors. Television, Radio and Print Media

are just some of the potential possibilities that your passion could direct you in. I would personally like to get into a high profile magazine as the entertainment editor. Television also sounds great to me. My dream job so to say.

15 Min> What is important to you and what drives you?GM> The Truth. Our world is bursting at the seams with lies and corruption. As a Journalist I want to publish work of honesty and quality. Educate the public and give them the courage to believe in their dreams.

15 Min> What is your passion?GM> Music is my passion - My form of escapism when reality gets hectic. To me, it delivers a form of tranquillity and relaxation.

15 Min> List your top 5 celebs you’d like to interview?GM>Rihanna

Jennifer LopezJacob Zuma (He isn’t a celeb per se, but would enjoy interviewing him)Oprah WinfreyKate Winslet

15 Min> List your top 5 favourite things?GM>CologneFoodMusicWritingSocial Media

15 Min> What do you do for fun?GM> Going out to my favourite restaurant, I collect wine glasses (but don’t drink alcohol); interior decorating and cooking up a storm.

15 Min> What do you like to eat?GM> Chicken Pasta, Chicken Biryani, Cottage Pies and ANYTHING sweet – I’m a bit of a sweet tooth.

15 Min> Do you know and talk to all your FB buddies?GM> I try to keep my circle of friends to a minimal. Too many fake people around! I do not know them all personally and I only chat to a handful of them.

15 Min> Are relationships important to you? GM> All relationships are significant to the human species. Family, friends and partners they’re all there to play a vital role in our lives and development.

15 Min >What’s your favourite hangout place?GM> Suncoast Casino in Durban. I

love the positive energy, vibrancy and the rich cosmopolitan lifestyle that the venue attracts.

15 Min> What is your ultimate dream?GM> Well I always wanted to be a television presenter.

15 Min> Who is your role model and why?GM> My role model isn’t the quintessential suspects like President Obama or Desmond Tutu but rather the people around me who never managed to make something of their lives despite being abundantly talented. Their lack of interest, enthusiasm and drive inspires me to make the best of my life...

15 Min >Do we need role models?GM>They’re just as important as relationships are. So many kids out there will tell you they’d like to be a certain individual when they grow up. And that’s really good. Someone actually inspires, motivates and encourages them even though they’ve never met. To me that is powerful.

Powered by a four-cylinder 1.4 TSI twin-charged engine – yes, this little bad boy has a supercharger and a turbo – it pushes out a respective 118kW and 240Nm and comes, standard with a 6-speed manual gearbox and an option for a 7-speed DSG. Not a bad choice, with prices starting at around R240 000 for the entry-level 1.2 TSI / 77kW model, but I will let you use Google to acquire more info on that model. The 1.4 TSI, however, will set you back over R300 000. Now with some of the tech-talk out of the way, we can get down to business.

When launched late 2012, I was very keen to see

what Volkswagen would come up with. Would it be

another “girly” car aimed at young women and

housewives? Or would it be a gigantic leap towards

a larger target market. As it turns out, it is neither of

those and would rather appeal to a smaller, though

perhaps more diverse, market. The new model

finally has a sharper and more masculine appeal

than the “cutesy” facade of its older family member

– and one can only be thankful for the lack of that

little plastic flower pot on the dashboard of the

second generation Beetle. Even as a gay man I

found that the bubble shape and that pointless vase

a tad too “Paris Hilton-esque”.

However, as a typical boy racer/stylish young man

(or so I would like to think), this did impress me

more than I first suspected it would. With retro

styling inside and out and a flat-face interior

accented by modern oversized dials, it has received

that modern touch that is up to date with today’s

cars. While this 21st century Beetle is definitely a

step-up from the older model it is still lacking in

certain areas; for example, practicality. Interior

storage space is limited and unless you are a skinny

hobbit you will not want to be a passenger if you’re

going on a road trip. On the other hand it is much

more spacious than its rivals; the Fiat 500 and Mini

Cooper.

During my drive around town the new Beetle did

turn quite a few heads, though. Hipsters seemed to

love it and two elderly gentlemen (wearing sweat-

bands and running shorts and looking like they

belonged in an Austin Powers movie) gave me a

thumbs-up while power-walking past me on the

road. It does have a certain presence to it and

draws attention wherever you go. There is a certain

iconic feel it and I, for one, can’t help but smile when

I see one on the road.

Volkswagen always refer to their vehicles as

“people’s cars”, but, in my opinion, the Beetle is

something different. It isn’t something people want,

or something they need. But is something that

stands out. Would I like to own one? Yes. Would I

buy one? No.

Taking it all into account, there is a certain level of

iconicity about the Beetle and I, for one, can’t help

but smile every time I see one.

“Don’t judge lest ye be judged” sound familiar? Sadly we roam in a society where this is happening more often than it should. Growing up in areas where giving unsolicited judgement is the “norm” has already contaminated the minds of our future generations. Not that it should be confused with constructive feedback – note the omission of the word criticism. An extract from @WayneBoonzaaier’s blog inspired this piece when he wrote: “What happened at the confirmation

I was invited to, as soon as I stepped into the house of the girl being confirmed, I heard whispers: “I know she bought the dress at Edgars” and “she can’t even afford a proper pair of school shoes but look how ‘all out’ her parents went for today”. Right there I realized how appalling the mind-set of some of the kids in my generation is. Instead of taking pride in another young boy/girl joining your church, you criticize them on appearance and the costs of their clothing.

This has become a custom in our life, judging others on physical attributes and financial worth.” With social media and the freedom to converse with anyone in the world, opens up this gateway to express yourself in both a positive and judgemental manner, most young people who are surrounded by myopic environments and people reflect a way of thinking that life is a ritual of materialistic competitions. Who dresses better, has more FB and Twitter followers, and just who has more

to brag about. Please know that not all young people or just people are this way. It does however, make one pause and realise what the fundamental meaning of life really is. Considering this, there is hope that somewhere everyday some are facing themselves and are willing to change that person they see in the mirror instead of trying to change everyone else - one bold step at a time.

Candice Swanepoel, Maryln Monroe, Kim Kardashian West, Kendall Jenner, Beyoncé, and the list can go on, these are a few famous “skinny” and “curvy” female forms. Society has through the ages revered the female form and the media have created the image that all girls must aim to be scrawny, meatless figures. Thus the ‘skinny versus curvy’ debate is an old one and often misses the fundamental issue: your health. Not everyone is meant to be a specific size. The best size for you is the one that puts you at your health peak. What your doctor has advised you to be, also

considering your family medical history. What then is the point of aiming to be a size 6 when all you did was increase your smoking, drinking or you just decided to starve yourself – now there’s a huge health risk. All you are doing it succumbing to a dangerous myth that we all are petite creatures. On the other hand, when you are dangerously overweight and damaging the heart that sustains you, this is not curvy, this is in fact is a dangerous lie and you would need to take care of you. Then there are those of us, who just lie to ourselves about being curvy and thinking we are

obese, when in fact we are a 12 – don’t be ashamed.Don’t hope to be “skinny”, just decide and make the change for yourself, not for anyone else or what we think is society’s norm. Compromising who you are to fit into what society thinks you should look like is not the way to go. Think of your health, your life, how you want to feel, what you want to do in life and be the best you, you can be. Celebrate who you are, your body, your curves – know that our individual bone structure and height only allows a specific look. It’s what’s inside that also

count. And it’s time to turn our backs on the ridiculous ideas of skinny and curvy and aim to be somewhat kinder to each other, healthier, helpful and better our spirit and mind – we are worth it and we deserve nothing less. In the end, whether “skinny” or “curvy”, who cares - just be healthy and happy, that wins every time.

15Minutes> Did you study after leaving school?Judy< I wouldn't call it study, more like equip.

15Minutes:>If so, what are you study-ing and where? Judy< I went to Yuri Arcers photography boot camp in Cape Town and when I got back I did a short course in graphic design at The Hill College in Port Eliza-beth.

15Minutes> Why did you choose to study what you did?Judy< I’ve always wanted to go into fashion and beauty ... so it was never in my plan. I didn't choose it, it chose me. I was at an event and the photographer asked me to take a picture of him with the host and as soon as I touched the camera I was hooked. So for my sweet 16 I asked my dad to buy me a camera and he did, my very first small digital camera that I took with me everywhere so I named it “poochy-doll” . Since then I've worked very close with Vinette Ebrahim "aunty Charmaine" from 7de laan, Patrick Tururu" Lindoor and many more artists.Graphic design comes from my love for art. I love to sketch so its like my back up ... everyone needs a back up.

15Minutes> Where else has your journey taken you?Judy< I'm a sport fanatic . I play provin-cial volleyball and I've seen all of South Africa and met people from all walks of life. #traveller

15Minutes> What are your plans for the future? Judy< I'm planning on doing two more courses- cosmetology and teaching. I also want to start my own business and become a South African brand.

15Minutes> Having been so busy, what is your real passion? Judy< Dance is my true passion. I teach kids ballet and contemporary dancing as a community project in a very poor and neglected neighbourhood to keep the kids out of the street. #philanthropist 15Minutes:> What drives you?Judy< My passion and my stubborn will to never give up, is what drives me but most important my parents and my faith is the substance of what is me. #passion

15Minutes> List your top 5 favourite things? Judy< my laptopmy camera my blackberry my chain with my name on my bed

15Minutes> What do you do for fun?Judy< I play beach volleyball, take my friend’s pit bull "Angel" on walks. I paint, watch movies , hang out with friends and watch soccer with daddy. 15Minutes> What do you like to eat?Judy< This might sound weird but its my favourite ...I eat peanut butter on weet-bix and also peanut butter on bread melted. It might let your house smell a bit when you heat it up but it tastes lovely. #yummypeanutbutter

15Minutes> Do you know and talk to all your FB buddies?Judy< I know most of my friends on FB yes, and I try to talk to everyone but I don't. Her favourite clothing item is her demin shirt, accessorising it with chunky jewellery and not forgetting the bright red lips. One could throw in a bandana, she instructs - “I personally think it’s really cute.”

Judy’s favourite colour this winter season is YELLOW. And her makeup and accessories must haves are bold eyes and bright lips. The secret is just to get the right amount of flawlessness to pull any look off.

15Minutes> Who is your hottie of the week?Judy< My HOTTIE of the week has to be none other than the funny little grown man - Kevin Hart. There's nothing as hot as a guy who can make you laugh. #hottieoftheweek 15Minutes> What’s your favourite hangout place?Judy< Dolphin beach in Jeffrey’s Bay. #besthangout 15Minutes> What is your ultimate dream?Judy< To be a well-known actor, one day - pretty soon.

15Minutes> Do we need role models?Judy< Yes we need role models. They are the mirror to who we are and our guide to who we want to be. My motto

is to "Think Local and impact Global" Positive role models!

The Abercrombie List

This of course raises interesting questions and answers. To be an entrepreneur takes hard work and risk. So either you want to be one or you just dabbling with the idea that you want to be one. Are you actually ready to be one? If you feel it in your gut but yet aren’t certain if you are ready, here are a few tips to help you.

1. Do you have something you love to do and are you good at it? Entrepreneurship is about doing long hours. Sometimes it’s doing something you love without any pay in the beginning. If you enjoy something and you are passionate about it then it becomes and intense and rewarding experience. Don’t do something for the money – this is a great reward but it’s not the only single motivator.

2. Are you disciplined? This is a toughie. If you are lazy, you have to rethink this idea and be prepared to give it your all. Being an entrepreneur means you are completely responsible for your-self. You will have to do whatever it takes, wherever you are, to get to where you want to be. Remember your choices are what puts you where you are. If this makes you feel uncomfortable, you might not be in the right frame of mind, yet. When you get started, you take full responsibility for everything – there is not back up plan when something goes wrong. Clients do not want excuses, they’ll simply just move on.

3. Are you ready to get uncomfortable? There will be a lot of uncertainty. Entre-preneurship can and will take you com-pletely out of your comfort zone. Forcing you to face “new” things, challenges, decisions, choices. If you like to be in control and prefer a structured, scheduled life, you might not be able to handle the complexity that surrounds entrepre-neurism. But don’t dismay, this trait might actually work in your favour. Planning also becomes an important skill.

4. What about your health? There are no sick days when being an entrepreneur, especially when you get started. Chances are there won’t be time for a few years to take a few sick days. You going to have to be prepared to be at your most productive all the time, even when you don’t feel good, otherwise you risk missing business opportunities. You have to focus on getting or keeping your-self in good health by exercising, and maintain a healthy lifestyle – healthy mind, body and spirit.

5. Are you a team player? Entrepreneurship is not only a lonely activity. You will have to learn to build relationships into great ones for crucial long-term success. It’s not only business relationships where your referrals will come from but it also means you need the support of those closer to you. When you start out, you are going to have periods when you need the wisdom, strength and friend-ships of those who positively support you. Also look for other ways to build your network, by attending business workshops, find a mentor, join other business programmes, go to business events. Remember, it’s a two-way street you also need to invest and add value to your relationships. You must want to succeed like you need air to breath – while having fun. Stay passionate, focused and hungry by following your heart and be prepared to give it your everything, to make your dreams a reality.

Hiding from those who hurt you and living in fear of being bullied. Does this sound familiar? Noticeably, bullying has increased over the years. It occurs in all professions, amongst all ages and in all social groups and it can lead to psychological trauma, illness and even death.Bullies dominate, blame and use others. They have no respect for people who are weaker than them and they feel they have the right to make others feel bad. These intimidators are not able to understand or care about how the other person feels. And are intolerant of those who are different, be it their cultures, beliefs, race, religion, gender.

Many do not realise that their actions have consequences and will always attempt to blame others for their actions. They become more concerned about themselves and always crave attention. Now many of us were teased and bullied as children and as you grew older it all seems like a distant memory. Or does it?

Bullying doesn’t always begin and end inside the journey of your childhood. It can leave emotional scars for a lifetime and could resurface many years later creating new problems, allowing unpleasant memories of being bullied to come flooding back.

Bullying causes… Stress, anxiety, sleeplessness, fatigue, trauma, fear, anger, pain, irritability, poor concentration and memory, panic attacks, shame, guilt, embarrassment, isolation, shattered self- confidence, fear.

Bullying myths, common myths and misperceptions of bullying…

• There is no such thing as bullying• Bullying toughens you up• Separates the strong from the weak• Ignore it and it will go away• It is part of life and do you just have to accept it.

It’s a negative behaviour displayed in different ways by one or more persons toward another.

This intimidation comes in many forms• Physical • Verbal• Psychological• Social• Sexual • Cyber

Being a bystander who witnesses this behaviour and does nothing about it is just as much the bully because it encourages the negative behaviour. Being bullied can prevent you from becoming who you want to be. What you’ve dreamt of becoming and with that, can take away all your hopes, goals and dreams. It can stop you from expressing yourself with the freedom you so deserve.

Despite all of this, there is hope. And hope is all one needs.

- Join forums and organisations that are there to support your cause. - Find true friends, a support system

of people, family or friends who will stand up with you against this exclusion. - Don’t retaliate with violence or threats in return. - Speak up- Get familiar with what bullying is and what it’s not- Be more than a bystander

All human beings have the potential to bully, harass or discriminate against others to a greater or lesser extent. Are you one? Think about your own behaviour before you make any judgements. So the message to students and anyone else who is a victim to bullies

is loud and clear. Do not stand for bullying, help is always available. Whoever you are and whatever the circumstances, you are definitely not alone.

You have every right to be who you want to be, to express yourself freely and feel safe in your own skin. Speak up! Stand up! Stand together!

Positive thinking is a mental attitude that admits into the mind thoughts, words and images that are conductive to growth, expansion and success. It is a mental attitude that expects good and favourable results. A positive mind anticipates happiness, joy, health and a successful outcome of every situation and action. Whatever the mind expects, it finds.

Many have heard it said that another person cannot make you happy. Happiness comes from within. Being confident is a choice and it will produce positive emotions. There has been much research done on being in a positive state. It will produce a sense of well-being and has even proven to have multiple health benefits. Successful living today being positive will change your life.

The way that someone feels about themselves shows in the way they act. They always find things in everyday life that makes them and others happy. Their joy and cheerfulness rubs off on those around them, and it shows in their life. They are more relaxed and sleep better. They are both physically and mentally assured – this can be linked to their spiritual connection that gives them a confident mindset.

Their ability to take responsibility and not to blame others when something goes wrong shows that they have a handle on life. Negative emotions have no place with them on their way to success.

Confidence is so much better than looking back and

thinking of what could have been. Being tolerant of others is another advantage of being confident. It is best to surround yourself with assured people that are upbeat and always choose to think good thoughts. Try to avoid negative news and thinking of unpleasant things. This will put you at an advantage in building the power blocks of positive thinking in your life.

Something to remember:

1. Positive and negative thinking are both contagious.

All of us affect, in one way or another, the people we meet. This happens instinctively and on a subconscious level, through thoughts and feelings transference, and through body language. People sense our aura and are affected by our thoughts, and vice versa. Is it any wonder that we innately want to be around positive people and avoid negative ones? Negative thoughts, words and attitude bring up negative and unhappy moods and actions. When the mind is negative, poisons are released into the blood, which cause more unhappiness and negativity. This is the way to failure, frustration and disappointment.

2. Becoming a Positive Example to All

Being positive, doing the right things and thinking the right things will produce the kind of behaviour that is an example to all. Watching your words, actions & tendencies will help those around you. If you can change the course of someone’s life positively, you have done a great thing. Being careful of the things we say also will manifest how we act. Our conversation should be complimentary and uplifting. We will not always be treated in the manner that is right. We are not responsible for the negative way that people treat us, but we are responsible for how we react to it. A positive person will realize that sometimes people are a product of their environment. Maybe they didn’t have all of the advantages that you did. The right thing to do is to act in a positive way. Contributing in positive ways leads to an eternal happiness.
