Deploying SAP HANA Many SAP customers committed to SAP are planning to move to SAP HANA. How do they transform SAP and move to SAP HANA while keeping the lights on?

Infrastructure Deployment Options There are different deployment options for the SAP HANA platform. Which option you choose depends on your starting point and your ultimate destination. EMC offers you the ability to choose any one or a combination of options to achieve your goals.

EMC offers choice in Datacenter-Ready SAP HANA infrastructure deployment including

• SAP HANA appliance: dedicated to SAP HANA, pre-sized, pre-built, and delivered to the customer with SAP HANA software pre-loaded.

• SAP HANA Tailored Data Center Integration (TDI): customer-deployed, leveraging existing infrastructure and suitable for mixed workloads.

• Converged Infrastructure: delivering the convenience of an appliance and the flexibility of TDI.

SAP HANA Consumption Models On premises or off premises with EMC Service Providers:

SAP HANA Appliance An SAP-certified factory-integrated SAP HANA appliance comprises a server, storage and network components, operating system, and SAP HANA database software in either a single-node or multi-node cluster. The appliance is delivered as a complete system, fully supported by the hardware vendors and SAP.

• Server, network, and storage are SAP-certified together with scalability chosen by the server vendor.

• The server vendor installs SAP HANA software.

• The appliance is installed and supported by server vendor and EMC.

• EMC monitors storage remotely.

The SAP HANA appliance is a dedicated environment that uses SAP HANA data center processes. With fast deployment and complete vendor support this approach reduces the overall time-to-value, risk, and customer support requirements.

The appliance combines the innovative Cisco UCS platform with EMC VNX Series unified storage and is available in both scale-up and scale-out versions.

Tailored Datacenter Integration (TDI) For most customers, the appliance option requiring dedicated infrastructure can be too rigid and costly for scaled adoption beyond a small use case. You can, however, deploy SAP HANA through the Tailored Datacenter Integration (TDI) approach that offers greater deployment flexibility and leverages installed storage infrastructure.

A TDI implementation starts with a certified SAP HANA server from your preferred vendor. You then use your installed EMC VMAX, EMC VNX, or XtremIO arrays.

By connecting SAP-certified servers to existing enterprise storage systems, SAP customers can

• Use existing multi-site data center designs.

• Leverage existing skills of data center personnel.

• Retain proven technologies and procedures.

• Reuse existing hardware components.

• Maintain existing automation and operational processes.

Virtualized SAP HANA on VMware vSphere SAP HANA deployments have evolved rapidly from stand-alone appliances to TDI set-ups and the evolution continues. Now SAP customers can also virtualize SAP HANA to take advantage of the economics and operational agility of the virtualized environment.

EMC IT has been the leader in the adoption of virtualized SAP HANA with the industry’s first production deployment. Running SAP Business Planning and Consolidation software, EMC IT has substantially enhanced productivity with a 400% improvement in Cost Center Retrieval execution and a reduction in data load times from 40 minutes to 60 seconds.

EMC’s clo se integration with VMware enables you to be on the leading edge of virtualized SAP HANA on VMware vCloud® Suite deployments. You can deploy applications in test/dev and production using virtualized SAP HANA to improve performance while lowering infrastructure and operational costs. And you can ensure the availability and protection of your data with EMC storage solutions

Data Protection and High Availability Regardless of the SAP HANA deployment model—appliance, TDI, converged, or virtualized—technical teams must deliver continuous availability while protecting data and meeting recovery-time and recovery-point objectives. To minimize the potential damage from outages and disasters, they need solutions that offer in-depth data protection with capabilities and deployment choices that can be tailored to their individual requirements and risks.

Building a Datacenter-Ready SAP HANA deployment requires protection at multiple layers with the following capabilities:

• Persistence: relies on EMC storage and the SAP Block API co-developed by SAP and EMC to maintain and—in case of failure—retrieve copies of the appliance software, database save points, log files, and snapshots with no data loss.

• High Availability (HA): accommodates server failure within the data center with redundant components, manageability, and node failover.

• Disaster Tolerance (DT): protects the SAP HANA environment from complete cluster failure within and between data centers.

“New Personality” for Legacy SAP Many SAP customers have high-cost, legacy RISC systems and outdated siloed infrastructures with too many IT resources dedicated to SAP workloads. These infrastructures are not fully automated and SAP Basis Admins and IT staff spend up to 70% of their time on manual monitoring and intervention. This results in a drag on resources and increased deployment and provisioning costs. There is increasing pressure to optimize existing landscapes and drive down TCO.

EMC can help lower TCO and improve performance and IT agility with storage consolidation and best-in-class data services. EMC can help SAP customers maximize IT investments with infrastructure strategies and solutions that remove IT as the bottleneck for SAP deployment and management.

Reduce Cost, Increase IT Agility IT organizations are in a seemingly perpetual battle to align business requirements with demands for reduced cost and increased efficiency. The challenge is to build storage infrastructures that minimize runaway costs and optimize resource utilization with consolidation and virtualization of mixed SAP workloads, all the while providing predictable performance and investment protection.

EMC realizes that organizations running SAP vary in their requirements and paths to simplify IT for SAP. Historically, many SAP customers have placed trust in EMC by running their mission-critical SAP applications on EMC VMAX® and EMC VNX® systems for high performance, protection, and availability. EMC continues to offer more choice for optimizing SAP landscapes with EMC hybrid arrays and EMC XtremIO® All Flash storage.

Game Changer: Run SAP on an All Flash Platform Thousands of SAP customers have already experienced the benefits of running their systems on EMC storage solutions. But there is increasing disruption as business balances investments to reinvigorate and optimize the infrastructure for legacy SAP landscapes while transforming SAP with a new personality of a modern cloud-enabled environment. This new SAP environment supports new use-cases, new workloads, and greater IT agility for development, testing, deployment, and performance.

With XtremIO, EMC’s all-flash storage array, these customers have a chance to keep improving their experience.

Architecture Matters

XtremIO’s unique architecture simplifies and consolidates production, real-time analytics, and rapid development and testing for SAP environments within an agile multi-workload All-Flash SAP infrastructure.

Key Characteristics of XtremIO

REVOLUTIONARY AGILE SNAPSHOTS

Snapshots are virtual and instantaneous copy images of volume data that capture the data exactly as it appears at a specific point in time. They leverage inline data reduction capabilities to only write unique changed storage blocks. As a result, all snapshots are created in memory in milliseconds with a tiny data footprint. The source and target SAP systems using this data experience no performance impact regardless of the number of snaps.

Accelerate and improve SAP development-test cycles while saving budget

SIMPLE SETUP

XtremIO eliminates the need for disk management, tier management, or certain manual administration tasks, and can be deployed in a day versus weeks for traditional storage.

Infrastructure is removed as bottleneck for SAP projects.

INLINE DATA REDUCTION

XtremIO writes only unique changed storage blocks. Duplicate data blocks never translate into physical data writes, and are replaced with in-memory metadata pointers that allow a single physical block on SSD to be referenced multiple times. After data

EMC XtremIO lowers capex and opex

with consistent, predictable

performance for all SAP workloads

with a reduced data footprint.

Key Benefits:

• Simplify managing SAP system landscapes

• Reduce TCO of non-production copies

• Streamline management of performance and growth

• Boost recoverability while minimizing costs

• Innovate at the speed of business

11

blocks are globally deduplicated, the remaining unique data blocks are compressed inline, delivering an optimal storage footprint.

Smaller storage footprint and lower TCO for larger SAP landscapes with many copies of systems and data.

LINEAR PERFORMANCE SCALABILITY

Both aggregate capacity and aggregate performance increase linearly with every additional X-Brick—XtremIO’s unit of storage— added to the cluster.

Ensure consistent predictable performance even as SAP workloads increase.

DATA PROTECTION & ENCRYPTION

XtremIO’s new data protection scheme, XDP, leverages the random access nature of flash and the unique XtremIO dual-stage metadata engine. The result is the world’s first flash-native data protection that delivers much lower capacity overhead, superior data protection, and much better flash endurance and performance compared to any RAID algorithm.

XtremIO arrays use a high-performance inline encryption technique to ensure that all data stored on the array is unusable if the SSD media is removed.

SAP System Copy and Refresh New applications, updated applications, new or updated processes, and even SAP software updates need to be tested thoroughly before going into production. In addition, SAP recommends—and corporate business executives and CIOs mandate—several full copies of SAP production databases to support integration, regression, stress, day-in-the-life, and production-support testing efforts.

It is no secret that standing up development, test, or training environments, running go-live rehearsals, and refreshing data for production support all come at a high cost in both money and time—measured in days, weeks, and sometimes months.

SAP responded to that need with SAP NetWeaver Landscape Virtualization Management (LVM) software. A management tool that automates SAP system operations including end-to-end SAP system copy/clone/refresh, LVM can automate and simplify SAP system management and operations.

EMC and SAP collaborated to develop a set of APIs to integrate LVM with EMC array-based replication software. This completes SAP's vision to automate and simplify the operation and management of SAP systems and landscapes running on traditional, virtual, or cloud infrastructures.

The benefits of this approach include

• Greater operational continuity through centralized management, visibility, and control of the entire SAP landscape using a single console.

• Reduced time, effort, and cost to manage and operate SAP systems through automation of time-consuming Basis administration tasks.

• Increased operational agility through acceleration of SAP application lifecycle management operations and fast response to workload fluctuations.

EMC support for SAP Landscape Virtualization Management is a natural fit to the EMC strategy and direction on virtualization, cloud infrastructures, and simplifying application lifecycle management.

Data Protection and High Availability Backup and Recovery

The EMC Backup and Recovery (BR) approach for SAP is application aware and application directed. It delivers the ability to execute BR inside the SAP application using EMC Data Domain® Boost working with SAP BR tools for classic databases.

EMC has also developed the software-based integration for EMC Data Domain Boost with SAP HANA. Now an SAP admin or DBA can perform fully automated backup and recovery of classic IBM, Microsoft, and Oracle databases as well as SAP HANA, all managed from inside the SAP system.

The IT backup administrator can also benefit from EMC BR capabilities. Many corporate IT practices demand that BR be managed centrally as part of a unified strategy and approach. With EMC NetWorker®, the backup administrator can include SAP landscapes as part of a unified approach to managing BR within an organization.

Whether using NetWorker or leveraging SAP with direct backup, SAP customers can also backup and restore their SAP systems from the EMC Data Domain backup platform—locally or remotely.

Both EMC Data Domain and EMC NetWorker support classic SAP landscapes and are SAP-certified for SAP HANA.

Continuous Availability and Disaster Recovery

IT leaders increasingly transfer mission-critical applications to virtual and cloud infrastructures to take advantage of considerable cost savings, simplified management and data center efficiencies. This transition brings new opportunities because traditional solutions are not able to meet the availability requirements of mission-critical applications in virtual and cloud environments.

VPLEX enables mission-critical applications to remain continuously available in the event of a single array failure or an entire data center being compromised and streamline the movement of application data for non-disruptive load balancing, performance optimization and technology refreshes.

The ability to simultaneously access one version of information across two data centers on two VSPEX Instances is a critical component of continuously available infrastructures. It protects against both technical and operational disasters, and opens up a host of opportunities in the areas of data mobility and availability.

Virtualizing the SAP application servers, deploying a database cluster with a VPLEX infrastructure eliminates technology single points of failure.

With EMC MetroPoint Topology using VPLEX with Recoverpoint you can extend protection for SAP with 3-site continuous availability, disaster recovery and operational recovery solution. MetroPoint gives you a single DR copy of data. Replication to the DR site continues even in the event of loss of a VPLEX metro site, providing protection from local and regional events.
