Bikes and Scooters

Please remember to take home your child’s bike/scooter at the end of the half term. We do not accept responsibility for bikes/scooters left during the holiday.

We are delighted to be celebrating World Book

Day on Friday 8th March. This year we will

be getting cosy as we celebrate the simple

pleasure of bedtime stories. On this day, the

children will enjoy a range of exciting literacy

activities and challenges to celebrate our wonderful heritage of Children’s literature and to

foster a love of reading for pleasure.

Children are invited to come to school in costume.

They may choose between wearing a book character costume, or in the spirit of our ‘Bedtime

Stories’ theme, they can come to school in

pyjamas! This event is free of charge. Please look out for your child’s National Trust book token that

they will receive on the day. These can be

redeemed at participating bookshops, or at the St John’s Book Fair, which will take place in school

from 18th-22nd March.

Happy Valentines Day from the Glass Door Team!

Our St John's staff and students spent a happy valentines evening volunteering for Glass Door, the charity which provides shelter and support for London's homeless. For my information about the charity and how to support it, please see their website. https://www.glassdoor.org.uk

This week, during Mrs Celikcan’s collective worship, the children learned about an amazing initiative that has been taking place in our school. The children learned that Miss Wightwick and Mr Johnson had sent many unwanted gym kits left over from second hand sales as well as old discarded books from the library to a new school in Freetown, Sierra Leone. The newly founded school (Nursery - Year 6) was so grateful about the donations they received that they decided to send us photos and dance show to thank us. Our pupils were very surprised and pleased to see the children's dance show in Sierra Leone looking very smart in their gym kits. The children had meaningful discussions on being part of a world-wide community, sharing, and being grateful for what they have. Over the next weeks, the children will write letters to the children in Samjona school. Mr Johnson assures us that we will get many

enthusiastic replies.

Fire! Fire!

Year 2 have had an amazing time learning about the Great Fire of London in our topic lessons this term. We have been visited by the Fire Brigade, taken part in a workshop and re-created the fire by burning our Tudor houses. Today we finished off our topic by making fire engines. We had a fantastic time doing

it and our teachers were really impressed by how much effort and detail we put into them.

Science Week

Science week at St. John’s will start week beginning the 11th March. . This year’s theme is ‘It’s a Wild World’ and we will be focusing on British Wildlife.

Each class will be taking part in a trip or experience relating to a different area of British wildlife, and we are looking forward to hearing from lots of parent speakers and taking part in exciting science lessons throughout the week!

Our dress up day will be on Friday 15th March. The theme will be British Wildlife, so please plan an exciting outfit that relates to that theme. For example, your child could be an animal, insect, plant or famous naturalist, conservationist or biologist.

The dress-up parade will start straight after registration (approximately 9.05am) so please do wait in the playground if you would like to watch.
