corded an assist on 48.2 percent of its field goals made in the
2012-13 season. Xavier had two players among the assist leaders in
the Big EASt: junior Dee Davis (second at 4.7 apg.) and sophomore
Semaj Christon (sixth at 4.2 apg.). Junior center Matt Stainbrook
was third on the team in assists at 2.2 apg.
DEE-FENSE WaS a BIG KEy TO VICTORy: Xavier held Creighton to 69
points and 39.0 percent shooting from the field (29.4 percent from
3-point range) on March 1, well below their league-leading averages
at the time of 80.2 ppg. and 49.5 percent (42.1 percent from
3-point territory). Many of Xavier’s other big wins in the 2013-14
season were due in great part to strong de- fense, including the
65-53 win at St. John’s on Feb. 25, the 59-53 win on Feb. 8 over
Providence and the 64-50 win at Butler on Feb. 11. Those three
opponent point totals were among the five lowest by a Xavier
opponent the entire season. the 50 points scored by Butler were
second only to the lowest total of 47 points scored by Cincinna- ti
in Xu’s 64-47 win on Dec. 14. the lowest opponent point totals for
a half in the 2013- 14 season also came in Xavier victories: 20
points for a first half by tennessee in Xu’s 67-63 win on Nov. 12
and 21 second-half points by Providence in Xu’s 59-53 victory on
Feb. 8.
COMEBaCK KIDS: Xavier erased a 17-point second-half deficit with
under 15 minutes to play against georgetown on Jan. 15, winning
80-67 at Cintas Center. that is the largest deficit overcome by a
Xavier team since All- American Tu holloway led a remarkable Xu
comeback from 19 points down with under 11 minutes left in a 66-63
win over Purdue at Cintas Center (12-3-11). Xu’s largest mar- gin
overcome on the road in the 2013-14 season was a 12-point
second-half deficit at Alabama.
DEFENSE KEyED ThE RuNS: There were numerous runs this past season
that were fueled by defense, including the 22-2 run on Feb. 11 at
Butler over the last minute of the first half and the first eight
minutes of the second half (a run that started with a 13-0 spurt).
Xavier outscored georgetown 16-0 over the final six minutes of
action in its 80-67 win on Jan. 15. Xavier outscored Cincinnati
24-6 over an 11-minute stretch of the first half and never looked
back in a decisive 17-point win on Dec. 14. Xavier held Alabama
without a field goal for over nine minutes late in the game on Dec.
21 at uA, helping Xu erase a 12-point second half deficit and
record the win. Xavier outscored Wake Forest 20-3 over the final
9:29 of the first half and did not allow a Wake field goal during
that time in the Dec. 28 blowout win. that 20-3 stretch included a
16-0 Xu run. then on Dec. 31 in Xavier’s Big EASt opener, Xu put
together a 15-0 run against St. John’s to turn a 29-25 deficit into
a 40-29 lead (2-0 over final minute of first half and 13-0 over the
first five minutes of the second half). Xu held SJu to 25 percent
shooting from the field in the second half. Xu held St. John’s to
32.3 percent second-half shooting at MSg on Feb. 25, including
carving out a 10-1 run.
GO DEEP: Xavier had only seven players average 9.0 minutes or more
per game in the 2012-13 season. Xavier had nine players average
over 12 minutes per game in the 2013-14 season, including four
first-year players (junior Matt Stainbrook and fresh- men Myles
Davis, Brandon Randolph and Jalen Reynolds). No returning player
better exemplified that improved depth more than sophomore James
Farr. Farr played only 42 minutes the entire season as a freshman.
As a sophomore in the 2013-14 season he averaged 12.4 minutes a
game, averaging 3.9 rpg. and 4.6 ppg., while shooting 51.6 percent
from the field.
IF IT’S FREE IT’S FOR ME: Xavier’s free throw shooting greatly
improved vs. Big EASt Conference teams. Xavier shot 63.6 percent in
regular season non-conference play and raised its percentage to
68.8 percent overall for the entire season. One of the best
examples of that improvement was sophomore Semaj Christon, who took
235 free throw attempts, which was 99 more than the next closest
Musketeer (136 by senior Isaiah Philmore). Christon, who shot 66.8
percent for the season, raised his free throw percentage from 58.9

the new NCAA graduation Success rate (gSr) for student-athletes in
Division i athletics was released in October. Xavier has upheld its
strong academic tradition among its student-athletes by posting a
score of 97 percent, which places it tied for 12th in the nation
and in the top spot in the new Big EASt. the gSr was developed as a
more accurate way to track the academic success of
student-athletes. using a six-year time frame, the gSr measures
graduation rates of student-athletes. transfer students are
included in the calculation of the gSr. if a student-athlete
transfers from an institution in good academic standing, then the
trans- fers are merely passed on to the new insti- tution. Ten
current Xavier teams posted a GSR score of 100 percent, including
men’s basketball.
