May and June meetings are open for nominations to positions on the executive board, and members need to really think about getting involved. The Guild doesn’t run on Automatic. So please consider ar least a year of time on your executive. And two more meetings still on our calendar and we’re done for the summer. Time goes fast…. Now, on with the newsletter….\Steve Hello A huge thank you to Gerry O for a great slide presentation…what a wonderful trip! Well we’re winding down aren’t we…only 2 meetings left and then SUMMER…which means 2 things; we have to elect an executive and we have our windup. So…. if you would like to run for President or any other seat then please throw your hat in the ring : ) As for our windup… Dana has kindly offered his yard for our do. At the next meeting we’ll have sign up sheets for attendance and pot luck dishes. AAANNNDDD…don’t forget about the July 1 st Art in the Park. • Sandi expressed the Guild’s Condolences to Russ Cahoon on the loss of his wife, Sandy. TOOLS & WOOD:

• Don Gienow told us of a lady with a bunch of tools for sale, and she wants them gone, but not at fire sale prices. Don’s looked at them, started the lathe, and it all seems to be in good order. For more information contact Don at: Ph; 250-573-5410 or email; [email protected]

OLD BUSINESS:

• Beattie School of The Arts – participation day was a great success. Tag reported that the other class, that witnessed the first class, want to have the same experience. Need to be scheduled. Thanks to everyone involved with this exercise.

• Art in the Park – July 1st – Application and $15.00 entry fee have been tendered to the Arts Council. We are now awaiting their approval after April 4th.

• Demo Meeting at Ted Moore’s place – Some discussion as to when to hold the meeting at Ted’s, his calendar.

That we have the demo night at Ted’s on a Wednesday, after May’s meeting (May 13th). One week after our regular membership meeting. 7:00pm. ELECTION OF EXECUTIVE:

• Nominations start in May.

• Please consider taking part in your executive, as this is the life of the Guild. NEW BUSINESS:

• Francis Shuter offered to have us all come to his place, when the fish arrive from the coast, for a day of smoked salmon, bannock, and fun… There will be a short notice as the fish will be arriving within a week of notice, and we will be letting everyone know and then we have to act. Late July or early August. Francis lives at Monk Park – Nicola Lake, BC. Map to be supplied later.

SHOW & TELL:

• Ron Hatch – Different ancient woods from around the world; Bethlehem olive wood, from Israel, (original piece of the cross – not!), Bog wood, carbon dated at 5,000 years old, from Quebec supplier, and Ancient Kauri wood from New Zealand, guaranteed over 30,000 years old.

• Mike Pease – Two walking stick swords that he made. One with a car spring steel blade, and the other, newer one, with as stainless steel blade.

• Dave Agar – Assortment of acrylic pens he’s made, and a “London Plain” wood bowl.

• Derry Appleton – Bracelets, (3) that he made from Tom B’s supply, a lot of trouble with one of them re the purple heart edge… Looks great now. And a purple heart square dish he turned.

• Dana Manhard – Trinkets from scraps of Tom B’s classes making bracelets. Wine stoppers with some of the same scraps, and a pendant-earring set from small pieces, and a bowl, with a green dyed rim, from apple wood.

• Terry Shupe – A Celtic cross he made for his wife. Four sides, and no sides as per instructions…

• Tag Lyons – Scout-style walking sticks that he made from scrap wood he got from Victor, he then presented the two sticks to Victor for the donation of the wood. He then told us of the Wheel-making jig he’s made and uses quite regularly.

DEMO: Gerry Olund

• Gerry and his wife had a trip to Bali and spent some time there and he gave a quick slide show on the wood work that he saw being done there. Fairly primitive, but nice work, and huge pieces of wood being harvested.

• Thanks Gerry, we see how other folks are doing it…
