This was the third consecutive year the 554thEngineers won the overall Commander’s Cup tro-phy, earning 1,678 points in the 18 events that madeup the Commander’s Cup series in 2017. While the554th Engr. Bn. was the only unit to participate in all18 events, they also showed success on the playingfields, taking first place in the annual 5k run, swimmeet, 10k run and flag-football, volleyball, singlesracquetball, trap and golf tournaments.

The 14th MP Bde. took first place in the intramuralstandings with 634 out of a possible 700 points.

The 14th MP Bde. was one of only two units thatcompeted in all seven intramural-sports seasons, which include flag football, volleyball, bowling, basketball, soccer, golf and softball. The brigade

took first place in bowling, second in golf and third inbasketball.

For the 554th Engr. Bn., one of the keys to ensur-ing participation was designating personnel to actas sports representatives for the battalion and itscompanies, according to Lewis.

“We identify a lead on the staff within the bat-talion or one of the companies, and that’s what theirfocus is. So, we have multiple teams — some of themplay multiple events, and some play only one event. It’s just having the option of support so we can fielda team for every event,” Lewis said. “It goes alongwith the ‘team of teams’ (concept).”

The awards were presented by Coleman Swinton,Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation chief ofsports, who also stressed the importance of units des-ignating a sports representative. He also announced

the Sports Department’s intent to hold a quarterlySports Council meeting to encourage participation.

“Every three months, we should have a SportsCouncil meeting, and we should have a representa-tive from each and every battalion, company andbrigade at this meeting, so that we can go ahead andput out the information on our events, and make surewe have units’ (letters of intent),” Swinton said. “Wewant to make sure everyone is aware of each andevery event, when it’s going to happen, where it’s go-ing to happen, and also eliminate any chance of lateentries.”

Swinton said units that do not have a desig-nated sports rep should contact him by emailat [email protected] or emailRob Steinmacher, FMWR sports assistant, [email protected].

staid church’s annual Christ-mas pageant, features a largecast of children and adults, who have been in rehearsalssince mid-October.

“With this production, Ihave such a variety of ac-tors,” Matthews said. “Wehave about 50 percent of ourcast who are new, includingsome of the adults. Right now, they’re doing exactly whatneeds to be done. It’s a littlebumpy at times, but that’sexactly the way it’s supposedto play out.”

Based on the 1971 book byBarbara Robinson, the playtells the story of the six Herd-man children, a rough-and-tumble bunch from the wrongside of the tracks, who decideto attend church one Sundaywhen the minister offers freesnacks. When they hear aboutthe Christmas pageant, theHerdmans demand to playmajor roles in it, to the horrorof the other churchgoers.

The story is told by BethBradley, played by TaliaJohnson. The Bradley clan —including parents Bob (playedby Keith Stam) and Grace(Stephanie Godfrey), as wellas Beth’s brother, Charlie(Jason McCormick) — havebeen a part of the traditionalpageant for years.

“I like (playing Beth) be-cause she’s the narrator, andshe’s on stage a lot,” Johnsonsaid. “The whole play is verycreative. But my favoritepart is the Bradley household, especially when they’re sayinghow bad the Herdmans are.”

The Herdmans includeCaleb Lewis as Ralph, Calie

Zarcone as Imogene, LandynGraham as Leroy, Henry

Westphall as Claude, JoshuaLee as Ollie and Molly Zarconeas Gladys.

The cast also includes LexiHarry as Alice Wendleken,Margie Rogers as Mrs. Arm-strong, Katie Roberts as Mrs.Slocum, Shelly Merritt as Mrs.Clark, Judith Michaelovskis asMrs. Clausing, April York asMrs. McCarthy, Hailey Dennisas Maxine, Annya Pirtle asElmer Hopkins, Elisha Crispinas Hobie, Andrew Warren asDavid, Aurora Morgan as Bev-erley, Ryan Gore and GrantWarren as firemen, EmilyGore as Shirley, Irina Crispinas Juanita, Evelyn Gore as Do-ris, Wayne McCormick as Rev.Hopkins, Lillian Smith andShelby Cannon as sheep, Jace

Morgan as an angel and shep-herd, Hannah Craig, AddisonWest and Annaleigh Woodin asangels and Rebecca Woodin asa church lady.

To say Matthews is wellacquainted with “The BestChristmas Pageant Ever” is anunderstatement. After direct-ing the first PFAA productionin 2008, she organized annualcommunity-theater perfor-mances from 2013 to 2016at several local churches. However, having the produc-tion back at the Theater on theSquare offers several advan-tages, she said, including moreperformance dates.

“I really wanted to bring itback to the stage, because it’sa whole different production,”she said. “I appreciate thechurch settings — they’re au-thentic, because the play is setin a church. But we have muchmore to work with when we’reworking with a stage.”

JUST THE FACTS2018 SubaruOutbackIt doesn’t matter if it’s tack-ling muddy tracks in theback country or shuttlingpeople and cargo abouttown: The Outback is in itselement. A 175-hp 2.5-li-ter flat-four powers all fourwheels. A pluckier 256-hp 3.6-liter flat-six is optional. Both come witha CVT. An available active safety bundle includes pre-collision braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping-assist features. A roomy interiorand ample cargo capacity make the Outback a good alternative to larger, thirstier SUVs.

Here are the cars he’slooking at: a nice-looking,restored 1951 Willys JeepStationWagon with aMus-tang engine, transmissionand rear end; a 1972 FordF-100 pickup with a V-8; a1979 VW Bug convertible;a 1988 Toyota Land Cruis-er. My question is: Whichof these would be thesafest/least dangerous? Thanks very much. He isa great fan of “Car Talk,”and will respect your an-swer. -- Roi

They always promisethey’ll respect us after theanswer, Roi.

I’m going to lean to-ward the Land Cruiser.Your primary question isabout safety, and I thinkthe Land Cruiser, due toits size, weight and higherseating position, would bethe least dangerous of theoptions you list.

Forget the ‘51 Willys. While it’s true that steer-ing and brakes had beeninvented by the time theydesigned that vehicle, Wil-lys didn’t make a whole-hearted commitment tothe technology.

And forget the VW Bug.That car would be the un-derdog in a collision witha size-13 cowboy boot.

The ‘72 Ford pickup isfairly substantial, and Ido like it for its simplicity. It’d be relatively easy tofix, and the cost of repairswouldn’t wipe out yourretirement savings everytime you need brakes.

But the Land Cruiseris a beast. And since yourquestion was which one doI thinkwould be the safest,I think the Land Cruiserhas the edge. Even better,if he’d be willing to go asfar as the Clinton admin-istration era, he could gethimself a Land Cruiserwith an air bag (‘95 wasthe first year). Then hecould crash all he wants.

And while the LandCruiser is expensive torepair, that might hastenthe process of Bill gettingsick of this whole old-carthing, and get him to goback to his 2009 Camry, which is safer than any ofthese heaps.

Good luck to you andBill, Roi.

How you and your behavior af-fect your car insurance rates(BPT) - The average Ameri-can driver pays more than$1,300 per year for car in-surance, but some pay athird of that average whileothers pay nearly 30 timesthat amount, according toresearch by The Zebra, anauto insurance search en-gine. High prices, wide dis-parity in rates and a numberof misunderstandings couldbe why a survey by thesame company found nearly61 percent of Americansthink their auto insuranceis too expensive, and nearly29 percent think it’s an out-right scam.

“Many people don’t under-stand how insurance compa-nies arrive at the rates theycharge,” says Neil Richard-son, a licensed insuranceagent with The Zebra, whichhas created the first andonly Insurability Score(TM)to help drivers understandthe risk factors that affecttheir car insurance rates.“Just as credit rating com-panies consider a numberof factors in determiningyour credit score, car insur-ers look at multiple factorsin establishing insurancerates. Those risk factors areall aimed at assessing howlikely a person is to not costthe company money, that is,whether they’re more likelyto file a claim.”

Learning about auto insur-ance risk factors can helpdrivers understand the for-mula behind rates offeredby insurance companies, and allow them to makechanges to their behaviorto avoid higher premiums,Richardson advises.

Here are four controllablefactors that can influenceyour car insurance rates:

* How you drive - Just oneDUI on your record canraise your rates by morethan $1,000 per year, TheZebra found. Safe driverswho obey the rules of theroad and have no traffic vio-lations generally pay lessfor insurance than similardrivers who have violations.Practice safe driving hab-its. Hang up the phone, anddon’t speed, drive reckless-ly or drink and drive - allthose behaviors can lead toviolations that will signifi-cantly increase your annualpremium.

* Continuous coverage -Keeping consistent insur-ance coverage without alapse. One, three and fiveyears of being continuouslyinsured are major mile-stones to most insurancecompanies and you shouldpotentially see a rate de-crease after each of those. You don’t have to be insuredwith the same companycontinuously - just have thecoverage without any gaps.

* Your credit score - Carinsurance companies usecredit scoring informationto further assess a driv-er’s likelihood of a claim.Drivers with higher creditscores tend to have access

to the best auto insurancerates, while those whosescores are lower often payhigher rates. Taking stepsto increase your creditscore by just one tier couldsave you as much as 17 per-cent on your auto insurance.(However, if you live inCalifornia, Hawaii and Mas-sachusetts, credit score isnot considered in your rate.)

* Whether you rent or ownyour home - While improv-ing your auto insurancerates may not be top-of-mind when you’re thinkingof buying a home, auto in-surers generally chargelower rates to people whoown their homes versusthose who rent.

Additionally, these factorscan influence car insurancerates. Even though you maynot be able to control thesefactors, knowing them canhelp you understand howmuch you’re likely to payfor car insurance:

* Where you live - Insur-ance laws and costs varyfrom state to state. For ex-ample, The Zebra founddrivers in Ohio have thelowest average annual pre-miums ($764), while thosein Michigan have the high-est average ($2,087). Loca-tion even matters at the ZIPcode level because insur-ance companies considerthe crime rates, weathertrends, population densityand other factors of whereyou live to predict the riskof you filing a claim.

* How old you are - Statis-tically, age is an indicatorof how likely a driver is tohave an accident resultingin a claim. That’s why teendrivers pay the most (about$5,000 per year), drivers be-tween the ages of 50-59 paythe least (less than $1,000per year) and rates start torise again after you pass 60.

* Your marital status - Mar-ried people typically payless for car insurance thanthose who are single, di-vorced or widowed.

* How you use your car -Auto insurers look at wheth-er you use your car to drivefor business, to and fromwork, to and from school, oronly for pleasure.

TheZebra recently launchedInsurability Score(TM), thefirst-and-only-of-its-kindscore that can help driversunderstand the risk fac-tors that affect their indi-vidual car insurance rates, and what they can do aboutit. The company providesthe free score and helpfuladvice on how to improveit only to consumers as aninformational tool; insur-ance companies don’t usethe score to set rates. Visitwww.thezebra.com to getyour free Insurability Scoreand comparison shop autoinsurance policies throughtheir powerful, independentand unbiased comparisonengine.

Missouri Depart-ment of Transportationcrews are once againkicking into high gearin preparation for theupcoming snow and iceseason. They are busychecking and repairingequipment, stockpil-ing supplies and test-ing emergency pre-paredness operationsto ensure motoristsget where they’re go-ing safely when winterweather hits.

“Snow removal is oneof our top priorities, andour maintenance work-ers are well-trained inhandling winter weath-er emergencies,” Assis-tant Chief Engineer DonHillis said. “When snowor ice hit, we’ll mobilizeour people and equip-ment to get the snow offthe road, and we’ll stay

with it until all roadshave been plowed.”

Hillis said the depart-ment has worked hardto be more efficient inits snow removal activi-ties, and those effortshave paid off. The de-partment used 69,733tons less salt last winterdespite a statewide av-erage of sixmore inchesof winter precipitation.

“We had a recordsnow on Feb. 1 thatclosed Interstate 70 for

the first time in history, and still spent $11 mil-lion less on snow and iceremoval last year thanwe did the winter be-fore. That means moremoney for projects,” hesaid.

Hillis said MoDOT’sstatewide plan of attackremains the same as inprevious years. Crewswill focus on gettingroads drivable in badweather by treating thehighest-traveled major

roads and regionallysignificant roads firstuntil they are mostlyclear. All the remainingless-traveled roads willbe plowed to allow fortwo-way traffic, concen-trating on hills, curvesand intersections. Mo-DOT crews will againbe using plows that cancover more roads in asingle pass such as Tow-Plows, wing plows and14-foot plows.

The best plan of at-tack for drivers whenwinter weather hits isto consult MoDOT’sTraveler InformationMap at http://www.mo-dot.org/. When snowand ice are falling, themap lets travelers knowwhether a highway isclosed, covered, partlycovered, mostly clearor clear.

The Missouri Department of Transpor-tation annually spends about $42 millionto keep roads clear in the winter and helpensure motorists get to their destinationssafely and quickly. Here’s a look at someother statistics from last year’s snow fight:• Tons of salt used: 159,181• Gallons of beet juice (an anti-icing prod-

uct made from sugar beets) used: 424,152• Hours worked by maintenance crews to

keep roads clear: 574,105• Miles of pavement MoDOT is respon-

sible for plowing: 76,256• Number of workers available for snow

Plow to keep your driveway clear

InformationandillustrationfromMoDOT

Information from MoDOT

MoDOT adjusts its practices to deal differ-ently with each storm and tries to return roadsto near-normal driving conditions as soon aspossible after a storm’s end.

BecauseMoDOT doesn’t have enough work-ers or trucks to clear every highway immedi-ately after a snowstorm, the department hasset priorities for which roads to clear first.

• Roads with the highest traffic volumes areplowed, or treated, first. These roads includeinterstates and other large-volume roads, which receive ongoing operations throughouta storm.

• Lower-volume lettered and numberedroutes are plowed and treated next. Traffic onthese roads may continue to have more snowon them until the higher-volume roads aremostly clear.

As soon as possible after a storm ends, ourgoal is to return highest traveled routes tomostly clear conditions; and to plow and treatthe critical areas of hills, curves and intersec-tions on all other routes. Even after all thedriving lanes are mostly clear though, MO-DOT’s work is not done. Workers now mustclean up the accumulation of snow on shoul-ders, bridge edges and at interchanges duringnormal working hours.

Who’s first?MoDOT’s plowing priorities

MoDOT’s top priority in a snowstorm is plowing state highways, which may require severaltrips down the same route.Snow plowed from roads could end up blocking private driveways for some time. MoDOT rec-

ognizes the inconvenience this causes, but because of limited time and resources, plows can onlyclear private driveways at the request of local emergency officials. To reduce the amount of snow that might block your driveway, shovel an open area along the

shoulder at the entrance (see illustration below). Plow blades will then push snow into the areajust before your driveway, leaving a much smaller amount in front of it.

Holiday party planning includes a safe drinking strategyFor better or worse,

the consumption of alco-holic beverages is rou-tine at holiday celebra-tions across the country.Unfortunately, NationalHighway Transporta-tion Safety Adminis-tration data shows thatabout 1,200 lives arelost each year betweenThanksgiving and NewYear’s due to drinkingand driving.

If you are hostinga holiday celebration, there are steps you cantake to ensure yourguests don’t become aholiday statistic.

Plan AheadWhen planning your

party, it’s safe to assumethat there will be guestswho should not be driv-ing home. Many com-munities have “SoberRide” programs duringthe holidays. These pro-

grams provide free cabrides or make arrange-ments to have desig-nated drivers available. You can also requestthat guests who plan ondrinking make arrange-ments for a ride before-hand or that they surren-der their car keys uponarrival. Another optionis to have an air mat-tress, fold-out couch orother accommodationsavailable for guests tostay over if necessary.

Eat, Then Drink andbe Merry

Provide plenty of foodto keep your guests fromdrinking on an emptystomach. Keep in mindthat salty snacks tend tomake people thirsty andencourage them to drinkmore.

Be sure there are non-alcoholic options fornon-drinkers and des-

ignated drivers. Whenserving drinks to yourguests, here are somethings to keep in mind.

• If preparing an alco-holic punch, use a non-

carbonated base. Alco-hol is absorbed fastercarbonation.

• Never serve some-one under the legaldrinking age or allow

minors to serveguests.

• Don’t letguests mix theirown drinks.Designate areliable “bar-tender” to keeptrack of who isdrinking andhow much.

• Do not en-courage drink-ing. It’s not es-sential to a goodtime.

• Be a goodhost by stayingwithin your lim-its so you canbe sure yourguests staywithin theirs.

• Close the bar 90 min-utes before the partyends and serve a dessertwith coffee.

• Remember that onlytime can sober someone

who has been drinking.Friends Don’t Let

Friends ... Ever!If you think one or

more of your guests aredrinking too much, hereare some suggestions tohelp them out:

• Engage them in con-versation to slow downtheir drinking.

• Offer to make theirnext drink and use lessalcohol.

• Offer high proteinfood.

• Don’t be afraid toinsist they slow down, stop or switch to a non-alcoholic beverage.

No matter what, ifguests have been drink-ing too much, don’tlet them drive. And ifyou’re not sure, alwayserr on the side of cau-tion and arrange a rideor a safe place to sleepit off.

(ARA) - Looked at acalendar lately? Timesure is flying! It seemslike just yesterday youwere enjoying thoselong, sunny days out bythe lake.

Now you’re count-ing down the daystill Thanksgiving andChristmas; but theholidays aren’t all youshould be thinkingabout.

The most wonderfultime of the year is alsothe most dangeroustime of year to be on theroads.

According to theAAA, loss of visibility, slick roads and poorlymaintained brakes leadto thousands of acci-dents every year, andthe highest number ofweather-related inju-ries and fatalities oc-cur during the wet andsnowy months of win-ter. But there are pre-cautions you can take tohelp prevent accidents, and to be prepared, justin case.

Now -- be-fore the flakesstart flying-- is the timeto winterizeyour vehicle!Start by mak-ing sure it iswell main-tained and ingood workingorder.

Here’s achecklist ofthings to in-spect:

• Checkall fluids andreplenish ifnecessary.

• Haveyour vehicle’s batterychecked to make sureit is strong enough tomake it through thewinter.

• Check tire treaddepth and tire pressure;consider special tires ifsnow or ice are a prob-lem in your area.

• Check to see that alllights work and head-lights are properlyaimed.

• Be certain the heat-er and defroster areworking properly.

• Change your wind-shield wiper blades ifyour current ones areworn or UV damaged toensure good visibilityduring the season’s rainor snow storms.

It’s always good tobe a defensive driver,but it’s especially im-portant in inclement

weather. Good winterdriving depends on us-ing common sense andadjusting your drivingto weather conditions.

• Keep the gas tankfull to minimize con-densation, and providean extra margin of com-fort and safety in caseof delays.

• Don’t use yourcruise control or over-drive when it’s freezing

(or colder).• Trucks take lon-

ger to stop, so don’tcut in front of them.

• Don’t get over-confident with four-wheel drive. It helpsyou get going quick-er but won’t help youstop any faster.

• Add weight tothe rear of your caror truck for bettertraction. If you drivea car, add weightto the trunk by us-ing sandbags. If youdrive one of themore than 38 millionregistered trucks onthe roads, you should

add weight to the truckbed.

This can be donewith a Line-X Spray-OnTruck Bedliner. The lin-er adds about 50 poundsof weight to deter rearwheel skids.

It also provides life-time protection againstthe rust and corrosionthat can form quickly inwinter weather.

Finally, keep emer-

gency supplies in yourvehicle.

Here’s a list of someitems that will come inhandy if you’re strand-ed:

• Basic safety equip-ment such as emer-gency cash, scraperand brush, small shov-el, jumper cables, towchain, and bag of sandor cat litter for tiretraction.

• A breakdown kitthat includes roadflares, blanket, gloves, boots, warm clothing, flashlight, extra bat-teries, food, water, andfirst-aid kit.

• A CB radio or cel-lular phone can be alifesaver for you or an-other stranded motoristin the event of an emer-gency or collision.

These tips and a lit-tle common sense willkeep you and your fam-ily safe on the road thiswinter.
