14TH SUZUKI METHOD WORLD CONVENTION

April 12-17, 2006 Turin, Italy

Promoted by Suzuki Talent Center of Turin

With the patronage of the

Piedmont Region • Turin Province • City of Turin

It is a great pleasure for me to have the opportunity to address a message to all the members of the Suzuki familyat this beautiful occasion of the World Conference in Turin. As everybody knows Italy means “home” to the stringed instrument players, especially here in Turin, the city ofthe great violin maker, Giovanni Battista Guadagnini in the last years of his life.More than a half century ago I heard here for the first time, the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Turin under thebaton of Maestro Mario Rossi in Respighi’s “Pini di Roma” and that gave me an unforgettable impression. An attractive reason, enough for us, to be gathered to celebrate the Suzuki Method and to follow the develop-ment of the Suzuki children. They are truly treasures and valuable enough that we should take care of their development in the warmth of theirhearts, of the skills and delicacy of sense as human beings. Vivaldi, Bach, Mozart and other great masters are theirteachers. That is a phenomenon, rather a miracle. It is a providence of God which we didn’t know until now.Dr. Shinichi Suzuki discovered it.We all possess the possibility of being educated to a high degree of sense, just like we all are invited to be a sonor daughter of God.So we are all of one family, of one spirit and therefore part of truth, goodness and beauty and I dare to add “peace”which we need so expressly now.Let us thank Maestro Antonio Mosca and his friends for their devotion to set this big project in action and wishthem success with all our heart.

Our city is happy to host the participants of the 14th Suzuki Method World Convention, from April 12 - 17, 2006, thefirst meeting in the third millenium after the solemn commemoration of the founder of the method, ShinichiSuzuki, in his native country, Japan. It will be an excellent opportunity to discover and get to know Turin, and Italy, with its artistic treasures and natural beauty, and to visit the nation considered the "cradle" of music. With regardsto the musical patrimony of our country, the capital of Piedmont is an interesting place, and not only because ofits artists and composers. Turin has become the city of Vivaldi: the manuscripts of his masterpieces are preservedat the National Library where they can be admired. Moreover, Turin will be at the center of world-wide attentionin 2006, as the host city of the Winter Olympic Games. This is not a chance coincidence. We are convinced thatthere are significant and qualifying analogies between the Olympic spirit and music.Musicians and athletes, even though they don't speak the same language, are able to communicate thanks to acommon bond, a language able to overcome barriers which separate nations, with music on one side and sportson the other. The 14th Suzuki Method World Convention will be the most important International event after the WinterOlympic Games. The focus on children and music will provide a different perspective for Turin to be knownaround the world.

Dear Colleagues and Friends, Don’t ask me why I thought of organizing the 14th Suzuki Method Convention; in every artist there’s always a

bit of folly, if not, such a definition wouldn’t apply. At sixty, everything becomes clearer: the period of studying is past, as well as the orchestra years, the concerts,

the tours around the world, the delusions and the glory…everything has passed with lightning speed. Now, what I find wonderful is teaching the cello and music to many children, because I know how to give them

a great treasure for life. I am moved by their smiles, making music with them is like returning back in time.Let’s all meet in Turin to see more than three thousand children smile, and convince ourselves that education

and being a music teacher is an important mission; the same one that S. Suzuki indicated as a priority, enablinghumanity to become better and be happy.

COURSE OF INSTRUMENTAL RHYTHM FOR EDUCATORS“The human brain develops thanks to the stimuli it receives, and the younger the child , and the more continuousthe process of well-aimed and precise stimulus and response, the more he shall elaborate increasingly refinedcapacities”: it is based upon this observation that the Course of Basic Instrumental Rhythm of Turin’s “SuzukiTalent Center” was created, which unites children around three years of age and proposes in a playful mannerall those motor and perceptive processes that allow children to develop the potentialities useful in the approachto an instrument and music. Thus, founded upon didactic experiences, the Course of Instrumental Rhythm forEducators has been inserted into the Convention’s Program, reserved for teachers and educators.
